As a person with OCD (and still working through it even though my symptoms started appearing 5 years ago) chainmail is very annoying and is constantly a mental block to work though, I used to be so avoidant of chainmail because I didn't get diagnosed yet. I KNEW rationally nothing would happen, but the little voice in my brain would constantly urge me to follow along with the chainmail. Mentally tiring. Chainmail can be fun if people are cool with it, but overall it's just manipulation and rubs me the wrong way

One time I reblogged a chain post on tumblr that had a happy fat calico cat and it said that they would protect me from every other chain post and also get me the rewards without doing anything. It feels like some sort of psychological loophole, but it really did cure me. Now I just picture that big chubby kitty and don't even entertain the thought of the chain post coming true or not

When I was like 15 I got a chain letter via facebook message from someone in school that I didn’t even know very well and completely misunderstood what it was saying (autism meant I took things very literally).
So I told a teacher because I thought it was a legitimate threat to kill me and needless to say the school quickly educated students on the concept chain letters and fact checking.

Growing up, I was the kid who wrote chainmail just to spread it. 💀 It didn't benefit me at all because this was before social media became common, and I was like 10. I stopped because one time I sent a message to my friend that began with something like, "Only 1 and 10 people can solve this riddle!!!!! Share it with 5 of your closest friends if you get it," (A made-up statistic made it more believable to my underdeveloped child brain) and I thought my riddle was really clever, like some National Treasure type shit, and she just sent me a message back that was like, "Wow, what a dumb message. This riddle was so stupidly easy a monkey could solve it." Nah, she devastated me. 💀

i deleted tik tok and twitter off my phone and occasionally go on it every few months. truly the best decision i’ve ever made. i have never been so happy to be out of the loop. life is just so much simpler without it, like i feel a lot more present and in control of my life (i suffer from adhd and tik tok truly is a dopamine trap). at one point, it was making me ANGRIER to be on those apps, having people spewing their opinions and bashing others. ugh life is so much more peaceful, i will never go back.

I remember the chain letters from the mid-to-late 90s. They were so dumb. They were a thing at the time the internet came to be, but snail mail meant you had to have actual stuff (ie paper, ink, a way to put the ink on the paper, envelopes and stamps), so there was a barrier to entry. They kinda went insane when all you needed was a connection to the WWW. I can only imagine what it's like when there is a chance to monetize them via ad revenue

My first chain post came about when I was in 7th grade (2014) and It was on facebook. I don't remember the specifics but it was something about if you don't repost this someone's going to unalive you in your sleep. I got a bit scared and reposted it then the next day talked to a friend about it who explained to me what chain posts are and I felt so silly after that.

The other thing I hate is the more subtle forms of this. I see it in social justice spaces where it takes a more subtle form of using shame or misplaced guilt, but also fear, to get people to participate in a petition or sharing posts or talking/learning about something. Similar kind of thing happens in religious settings. I’ve legitimately burnt myself out to the point of struggling to eat and shower (not even cook and clean) from overdoing it with voluntary work before so I know all too well that people legitimately only have the capacity to meaningfully care about one or two causes, and spreading yourself thin can a) burn you out like me and b) lead to the spread of misinformation and even scams by well meaning people. People aren’t bad people for not putting their effort into a given cause! I’ve seen so many people complain about performative activism and then turn around and guilt trip people into participating in activism, as if that approach isn’t one of the main causes of performative activism. Same thing with religion, people complaining about others not being dedicated enough and then turning around and using manipulation to convert people. Like if you’re getting people to become involved out of guilt or fear, instead of their own initiative, is it any surprise that they’re not passionate about the thing in question?? Thank you so much for this video!

  • @silly-zai.

The positive one's don't bother me so much unless people think their month will be horrible if they don't use the sound, what bothers me is the ones that say like "use this sound or [bad thing] will happen." It just feels off because it feels like people are just encouraging obsessive compulsive behaviors for clout. That whole "Do x or y will happen" kind of thing is how some kinds of obsessive compulsive thoughts manifest. I don't know if these kinds of TikToks can cause someone to develop OCD or to relapse but it feels like something people should be more aware of, even if it can't. Encouraging these kinds of thoughts isn't good. If you're having these kinds of thoughts, that's completely valid, but obsessive compulsive behaviors shouldn't be encouraged, especially for clout. (Little side note: I may not be fully right in what I'm saying but this is just how I feel as someone who had/has OCD)

I see this tactic being used for “social activism” on tik tok. There are some genuinely educational videos on things like palestine and congo on the app. However, there are some goobers who create filters to get interaction and pretend like they’re gonna donate the money they get to “causes”. its manipulative to children, but it hits especially close to home for people with morality OCD.

@@dysonsphereishere some of them are posted by accounts that don’t even have the ability to get money from the TikTok creator fund, others are created by bigots who only made the filter to get money. no matter what it’s very difficult to know exactly where the money is going, because TikTok is not a donation platform. I don’t doubt that there are people who make filters with good intentions, but it’s very performative and only surface level helpful.

2:00 god this reminded me of when i was a wee lass, my child self got the infamous carmen winstead chain text and me being the gullible kid i was forwarded it to as many contacts as i could. i was freaking out, hoping that the few contacts i had would suffice (i think it was like one or two short of what it said lmao) but tried to move on about my day. i think like a couple hours later, my mom comes in my room, holding the phone and seeming like she was crying (very convincingly might i add). now ofc when you see your parent crying, you start panicking. she tells me the call's for me, and hands me the phone. i ask who it is, heart racing, and i hear a gravelly voice asking why i didn't send enough messages, telling me i only have a couple days left to live, etc etc. so at this point i'm fucking hysterical and crying my eyes out, at which point mom starts busting out laughing and tells my uncle he can cut the act. afterwards i hear him laughing too, apologizing and then mom walks off and keeps talking to him, joking about it. so then i just went back to my bed, sat there for a few minutes and let my lil noggin process what the fuck had just happened. i still get a kick thinking about it now, a good bit later as an adult 😂😭
