Something I didn’t hear you mention when it came to the importance of the term “Atlas” in Bioshock is that the entire game is pretty much one big reference to the book “Atlas Shrugged” by Ayn Rand. In the book, rebellious capitalists disgusted with how the government controls the business world and exploits their productivity plan to create a place where the world’s top business leaders can pursue their business and creative adventures freely, thus creating the perfect “individualist” paradise. The book ends with the planning of this place and Bioshock basically picks up where it left off, critiquing how the “perfect individualist paradise” would actually play out. There’s also no coincidence that “Atlas” was a politician before attempting to take over rapture, as it’s heavily implied in “Atlas Shrugged” that the perfect capitalist utopia could not exist because old world politics will seep its way in and cause history to repeat with attempts to control and limit power and creativity.

When talking about the reason for Rapture's existence during the prologue, I was also surprised he didn't mention the libertarian philosophy behind it.

@@s_t_e_v_e_n_ Rapture is literally a definitive Libertarian Society. They fled so they can practice there own beliefs of capitalism without any government interference. Idk how you could consider it a “Commune”.

Thank you for the concise summary of that book as I doubt I'd ever find the time to engage with such fantasy.
Furthering the critique with specific reference to Bioshock,
It's actually more disgusting that Frank is leading you around through the world of rapture while gaslighting you about who abused the discovery of Adam. His actions are directly responsible for the state of Rapture when you arrive.
Tenenbaum was a woman who saw the possibilities in such a miraculous discovery, while the other doctors had varying levels of unethical reactions, since this was a place where science wasn't fettered by morality, thus the little sisters.
Fontaine is literally the exploiter who set in motion the downfall of the "great man" society, saw the addictive nature of Plasmids as a good thing for business, and then created orphanages for the little girls he was totally ok with kidnapping from the residents of the working class families he was simultaneously agitating against Ryan, who was just a tycoon buying buildings and "fish futures," which were otherwise unregulated and wholly owned by the individuals of the city.
Is it any wonder the characters consider Fontaine on par with the Devil? Ryan only began to use the levers of society once it threatened his own prestige, like a hypocrite does, but he was correct in believing that the conman Frank Fountaine was a real threat. Just some sick sociopath stepping on everyone as he reaches for the top of the food chain.
Bioshock 2 is also very interesting as only when the kidnapping of the children affects the rich socialites like the Therapist villain, do the resources of society get spent in changing things "for the better."

I think 'Bioshock' is quite literally referring to the act of our "Biological system going into shock". The stuff people injecting into their bodies, causes shock to their Biology, a jump, or whatever you want to call it.
I love when a title references something in the story that may seem mundane but is actually a big part of the overall story.
The part where you initially inject that stuff into our main character? That scene where he falls off the balcony and he is in immense pain from the stuff he injected? That's a 'Bioshock". His internal DNA and bodily functions are changing, I imagine that's painful.. a shock.

2:26 To be fair, a third option would have been to try camping out at the lighthouse proper. Admittedly I'm unsure if search and rescue would ever show up. You could also possibly fashion a boat out of something present, might even been Jack's plan with the Bathysphere at first.
Though, how I interpret it from Jack's perspective is that he was simply poking around and didn't quite realize where the Bathysphere would take him. Once he pulled that lever though, he was stuck in Rapture and had to fight his way out.

The form of story telling in Bioshock that I like is the idea of "thrusting you into the world with little explaination", as in you need to figure things out for the most part on your own but the game treats you as if you have an idea or like a lot of things are treated as everyday things, if bioshock was written today, you would be bombarded with the "oh your a new comer? Let us show you whats going on".
I think that is why I sort of resonate with dead space in a way, its genuine and sincere, it presents itself as is, it also leaves our minds to run wild, rapture is one of those cities I would love as a sort of walking simulator with cases of the start, middle and after of certain events.
Sure it sounds mundane but I am weird, however, I am part of those people who played Splatoon who became more curious with the world rather than the battle.

I'm referencing Our Flag Means Death here, but it's a common misconception that lighthouses are supposed to be a beacon to guide you in. Technically lighthouses are a warning to stay away, the light illuminates the rocks, stops you from crashing.

I think the bad ending was supposed to be pure insanity since thats more or less what happens to adam addicts and jack is seemingly the most powerful one

In regards to the rewards of saving or harvesting, I actually think it makes more sense than it first appears. Ryan on an audio log can be heard telling someone who's complaining about Fontaine that if he doesn't like it offer a better product. Tanenbaume does just this. And she's a very pragmatic women who isn't the most moral obviously. She's not going to appeal to the player's morality. She's going to offer a better product. She's also capable of offering a better product as she pioneered plasmids, adam, etc.
    Just my two cents

Really I’m a bit obsessed with this IP. Even went so far as to get the chain tattoos on my wrists with “a man chooses, a slave obeys”, and on my back next to Gutz sacrifice of the brand mark “No Gods, No Kings, Only Man”, all done in the Bioshock font. Some feel only one was the bomb but I liked them all though one will always be my favorite. The intro shook me and I often show it to people not into games as a quick pretext on why games should be considered art.
Every time I see someone do one of these retrospective videos I get suckered in and watch them talk about the same insights and analyses of Andrew Ryan and Ayn Rands objectivism philosophy. I’ve even figured out how this series and my other favorite franchise Fallout could mesh together fairly cohesively in regards to story. It’s midnight where I’m at and I’m pretty baked off hash and edibles. I guess this is sorta like someone opening up with “I’m am alcoholic”. Still thanks for the content and feeding my addiction. If I ever get Isekai’ed, I hope it’s into a universe with these to IPs mixed.

Totally correct about the save them/harvest them execution. The choice for the player is non-existent since saving all the sisters is just as good as harvesting them. However I find this an interesting move by the dev, perhaps unintentionally. By making the rewards basically the same, they present a moral 'choice' which isn't much of a choice at all. Rescuing is basically the only choice, which plays to the free will themes of the game.

Also, it's weird that Jack doesn't wear heavy gloves after being transformed into a Big Daddy. I mean, they could have easily added some new hand model for this.

There's something I think it deserves to be pointed out. Did you notice there are at least 3 sites in the game of murdered families (the frozen one in Fort Frolic, the couple who commited suicide after their daughter was turned into a Little Sister and the family with the three daughters in one of the apartaments in Olympyan Highs) ? I might be far fetching, but I think there's a meaning behind those three families, which is connected to the endings. Regarding the bad ending, it's pretty obvious, you have to choose between power and the Little girls. And if you choose the Little girls, that leads to the question "Are you sure you're strong enough to protect them ? Sometimes, you gotta sacrifice some Little Sisters, to save the many girls you turned back to normal.".
This could give a whole new meaning to the brutality Jack shows towards the Little girls in the "Sad Tenembaum" ending. Maybe, he's not choosing the city over them in that ending. His addiction, mixed with the need to protect the girls from the world's horrors, gave him a twisted and possessive wish to give them only the best. To build a better world for them.
Just like Steinman, in this ending, Jack searches for an impossible perfection.

Great video , but i played all 3 games at first time just a year ago and my perseption was that the first game story was stellar, but the gameplay or soo the balance was not as good, but the 2 changed they master the gameplay part and made it much more balanced but the story also very good but the not the first 1.

Someone may have said this already. But at the end you say you don't know why he needs a nuke. Is it possibly a reference to a man chooses (save the lil sisters etc.) Or a slave obeys. And his final command was just "kill".
    Love your stuff man!

Always wanted to play bioshock 1 and 2. The first bioshock I played was Infinite. I think I got it for free back to when Xbox had monthly free games 2014(I think)
I liked it and wanted to play the others but never had the chance for some reason.
I finally played them and I can say that the lore is massive and is just perfect. I did play both on hard to struggle and put more time to the game and it was worth it.
    Although, the time-line is confusing.
