This was a Prime Day pick-up. In this video, I give an overview of The Cold Steel Chieftan Sax. Blade Length: 13.375 Inches. Made in Taiwan. 1055 Carbon Steel. High Polish. Arrives Sharp. Wood Handle. Leather Sheath. Weight 22-23 Ounces. Price $100 - 125. Various Cold Steel Viking items listed below (US Links). Enjoy! :D *COLD STEEL BELOW:* Chieftan Sax: s71.co/3WBYyHz Woodsman’s Sax: s71.co/3zVGIGT Long Sax: s71.co/4cU3Xzr Norse Hawk: s71.co/3oEz63N Viking Battle Axe: s71.co/3A1icUH Viking (Pole) Axe: s71.co/3yoJ8gx Viking Sword, Single Edge: s71.co/46ig1Ip Viking Sword, Double Edged: s71.co/3LCWRTU
I received cold steels woodsman sax as a gift from my wife. These large blade knives (swords, daggers, machetes.... Whatever we shall call them) are beautiful pieces and actually work great as the tools they are. I use mine as a hatchet replacement while playing in the woods. Such a cool factor IMO... Great videos as always, thanks for what you do!
Well during the age of the Vikings, it was a tool, but also the weapon of last resort. It was carried horizontally so that when sitting on a bench, at a table or on a ship. The knife would be out of the way. Plus, if the guy sitting behind you on a ship, needed a knife real quick, there was one in front of him. I have three large Cold Steel knives, this will be my 4th one. Nice video by the way.
I love that Cold Steel makes multiple Sax items...from the Karve folder (been EDC'ing this for a while and really like it), to the Woodsman Sax, Chieftain Sax, and Damascus Long Sax. The Chieftan feels quick to me, compare tothe other sax fixed blades they have. Keep up the good work!
That's an excellent deal on that knife and, it just happens to be one of my favorite large blades!!! Light, strong and maneuverable! It came pretty damn sharp too! Great deal, great knife, GREAT VIDEO!!!
Thank you! The Seax blade has been my favorite blade pattern for many a year. I wish more makers produced them. Bark River made what they called a Bush Seax but I missed the boat on that one. I may need to grab a Cold Steel Chieftain. Ever wonder where the word Saxon came from? This is your answer. Many Northmen settled in Northumbria, England. They brought with them the venerable Seax. It was small knife to sword sized, depending on application.
Excellent! My step father was from UK, but way back his family were Vikings that landed in Northern France and then crossed over William the Conqueror style :]
For sure. Judging by the steel, I believe that same factory which makes their tomahawks, and the drop forged series of knives, also makes this for them.
It is more like a machete steel, but they hardened it more so it's not bendy like the machetes. Came quite sharp. Spyderco Sharpmaker is a good sharpener, the rods can be used freehand. Also now they make leather strop belts that fit on a KO Work Sharp. It is not cheap, but it allows power stropping.
That did pretty well in the cutting. How do you think it would hold up let's say to light brushing and some not too thick branches and splitting? (not super heavy wood or anything like that)
Indeed in my opinion The Edge should always face the welt of a folded type sheath. The Aesthetics of these historical reproductions are fairly good. I have a custom-made Saks similar to The Woodsman saks that they make. I also like the look of their Arkansas toothpick.
That is nice. These are the type of blades that made me like CS a long time ago. I'm not happy with the folders they've been coming out with and quality on fixed blades has been hit or miss the past 2 or 3yrs. Hope they pull it together.
Overall a nice piece. I find the blade too shiny but that could be fixed. Same with the brass hardware. Definitely should have a place in every arsenal.
Hope you’re well, Sensei, beyond the vidjas! Ah, so that’s how you spell his name. Any insites or opinions about the complaints around the campfire as of late about how GSM has been shortcutting their heat treating?
I think GSM is introducing a bad China line, but since their stuff is made in like 6-7 countries all around the world, many of their products will be unaffected, they will be made by those same sub contractors we know and love :]
Actually a lot of the current heat treat complaints involve knives from their Taiwan made knives. Not sure if they changed subcontractors or lowered QC or both but the issue is unfortunately not just with their Chinese made ones.
Yah TH-cam definitely unsubscribes me from people I would never unsubscribe from I subscribe to like 700 people, but nice knife 13 inch blade im definitely getting another Amish jon from work tuff gear I recently got the svord von temskey bowie, and the svord hog beater
Did you see the video JoeX did about the machetes? He bought a bunch of machetes. Some were old stock 1055 the new GSM were 65mn. In my experience 65mn is very soft but it is tough. What do you think i know kershaw 65mn is very soft.
I had a CRKT Ruger bowie that was 65mn, and the tip bent while stabbing wood, and then it snapped off :] Tac had the Kershaw Camp 14 Inch, and it got a crack in it. But, my CRKT Ken Onion Machetes with that steel seem okay, they hardened them less than those others, so they can flex and not crack or break. I did see the Joe X vid in my feed, haven't had time to watch yet. I just assumed some of the new GSM probably were bad.
@@WeAllJuggleKnives I remember when tac had that happen. Wasn't long and kershaw pulled all the long camp series blades not only the camp 10 remains. Crkt has always been a hit or miss. My guess GSM cutting money got rid of south Africa. I believe Lynn used south Africa so he had a excuse to go hunting on business trips. He is a wise man. Lol. The new coldsteel seems to be moving away from its biggest market budget quality. In my opinion. Wonder how long it has before its a corporate disaster?
I love it, I just hate the price (almost double the retail price here, as always^^) I made myself a Seax from a machete. Historically they were not that thick, that's why. youtube comments? don't get me started, 9 out of 10 just disappear...
Well, comparing it to big Bowies around the same size, like my DK Bowie Knives, this would not be as tough, as those have integral construction, whereas this has a more narrow tang. But the fit and finish and edge on this was better. I would say this is more of a fighter than tool.
Hello sir I was curious if you were going to do a review of the CS Arkansas Toothpick. I recently aquired one and I wanted your opinion on it. Just curious love your videos they are so informative!
Still the greatest knife channel on youtube!
Thank you for your support!
Very much agree
Very Cool! now that's an EDC
Love your show sir
Thanks, bro!

How well does it compare to the Cold Steel 1917 Bowie?

The aesthetics of this Cold Steel are very impressive!
Love the channel!
Thanks, my friend!

Excellent, I am glad you are picking one up! Good point about the "reach around" knives, they had to trust each other!
Sweet Knife!
Glad ya like!
I like the blade style and it’s good to know they come decently sharp.

Thanks! I am eye-ing their Woodman's Sax, when the price goes down a little bit more, I will get one.
@@WeAllJuggleKnives One thing to note, there's a rather large portion of unsharpened blade towards the guard on that one. Like, a few inches worth.
That's an excellent deal on that knife and, it just happens to be one of my favorite large blades!!! Light, strong and maneuverable! It came pretty damn sharp too! Great deal, great knife, GREAT VIDEO!!!
Thanks, knew you would like this one!
Awesome knife, buddy! Have a great weekend!
Looks great 👍
The sound of the blade as it cuts the bottles is cool. Nice blade dude!
Epic blade, gotta love oversized fixed blades!

I’d love one of these! I wish it was $25 less than you paid and I would then purchase one. Though your price was quite fair, especially from Taiwan.
To hell with TH-cam. We got your back brother.
Thanks! WE will outlast and out live YT and be fine :D
My god why cant we have those here. Astig idol!
That an amazing seax. Wish it was made somewhere in Europe but hey I'm sure that would triple the price
For sure. Judging by the steel, I believe that same factory which makes their tomahawks, and the drop forged series of knives, also makes this for them.
Cool knife Sir, always love your videos. 🙏
Ohhh, mannn! I was actually looking, recently, for a seax.
I love it and your channel. Just dropping this for your algorithm.
Thank you, it definitely helps!
Always love your reviews. Just "resubscribing" since ive had to move and change phones. Still constantly amazed at your water bottle cutting.
Excellent, glad to have you back!
Thanks for all the vids.....keep it going.... the resistance may very well encounter resistance.
I'm fortunate to've swerved into this. I been wacky-busy, recent weeks.
Anyway, I'm pleased to be contributing to the shoving back against ... "them".
Excellent. I hear that, we had a few heat warning days and a plague of cicadas chirping, delayed my shizzit a while but I am back, too.
That’s clean looking I want one.
It's pretty sweet!
Great review. Like a mix of a Bowie knife and a gladius. Thanks for doing it!
Welcome, buddy!
Impressive blade and nice presentation!
thanx, bro!
Nice looking blade I like the sheath.
can we get a vid of it on your belt line drawing it and maybe how it would fair in camp chores ? ive always loved viking stuff.
Been wanting one for so long! Thanks for the video!
Welcome, my friend, hope it helped your decision!
Sweet looking blade!
What a cool and badass looking blade! Go Cold Steel!
Interesting blade, thanks for the video.
Who doesn't need one of these? 🍿🥤
Cool knife. Thanks.
It does look cool! What do you think of the steel? What is the minimum (i.e. simplest and cheapest) sharpening set up?
It is more like a machete steel, but they hardened it more so it's not bendy like the machetes. Came quite sharp. Spyderco Sharpmaker is a good sharpener, the rods can be used freehand. Also now they make leather strop belts that fit on a KO Work Sharp. It is not cheap, but it allows power stropping.
Nice
That is a beauty! You got a great deal!
That did pretty well in the cutting. How do you think it would hold up let's say to light brushing and some not too thick branches and splitting? (not super heavy wood or anything like that)
I think it would do well, a little better than a machete, because it is heavier and harder. It wold be like a Woodsmans Pal or other medium machete.
Truly Badass

Hmmm, that one is pretty darn cool. I am putting it on the list!
Glad to hear it!
Comment to help you. Thaanks for the review.

Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
How's the balance on it? Looks fairly blade heavy. Also, how well fitted is the hand guard?
The wood helps counterbalance, the handguard did not move at all on mine.
I want one of these but the steel choice makes me second guess the price point
My theory is that they had a lot of 1055 around for the Cold Steel Hawks they make over there.
Yah TH-cam definitely unsubscribes me from people I would never unsubscribe from I subscribe to like 700 people, but nice knife 13 inch blade im definitely getting another Amish jon from work tuff gear I recently got the svord von temskey bowie, and the svord hog beater

Thanks! Maybe in the future, it really depends on if I can find one on sale.
This thing looks like it could be worked into a pretty credible pigsticker without too much effort.
the only effort would be to find the pig. ;-)
Nice!
👍
Thanks, bro!
How is the building quality?
Solid, but the tang is more narrow than the blade, so I might not beat on it as far as splitting.
At least you can use for content. I am at a loss to explain my compulsion.
For sure. Life can often seem very arbitrary, but we do have to fill our time :]

I don't know where you live, Mr. Slicey Slash, but, The Osprey knows; and he sees aallll...

Get wrecked YT. Wealljuggleknives is one of the few originals still around.
Thanks bro, I am sure I will outlive YT. They are becoming the next Myspace, but I will continue!
Don't like that gap just in front of the guard.
It's okay, having a stump that's not straight is common
LOL I heard Clinton has one of those.
Niiiiiice
Do you have the Condor Burmese Hunter machete?
No, I will check it out.
