    I am happy they rolled things back, but it troubles me that they insist on keeping that "run time install" wording in there. Everyone else bases fees on sales, so the fact that Unity is keeping that does not bode well for the future.

      @zeldinus ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Exactly! This runtime fee is fishy.

      @AuroDev  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah, they definitely have some purpose in mind for that since they are not going for just a simple revenue fee. My initial thoughts were that they used "install" to cover all types of games like free ones with mtx also and the "run time" was hammered in because they already have the subscription fees for the editor and wanted some plausible argument against "why 2 different fees for making games?" - this way they can emphasize that the other is for making games (editor) and the other is for running the games on devices (runtime) when in the end the distinction doesn't really matter when devs are paying both.

      @@twocatsyelling723 Yeah, there is a good chance they were going for the "door-in-the-face technique. But it it was intentional, it definitely backfired on them as they lost a lot of customers due to this and potentially had to lower the numbers beyond what they were going to, just to lure some people back in.

    Personally I will not use Unity for my future projects. I will expand my knowledge to various engines.
    I will still make tutorials video with Unity but will slap a disclaimer that "You have been warned" similar along those lines 😅
    With my time using Unity this was 2nd time they seriously got on my nerves.

      Would be a breath of fresh air to have major positive news event with Unity :D

    Yeah, my views are similar. I'd like to try a Godot test project (maybe 2D to start), but I agree it would take many months to fully transfer. Not impossible though...

      Godot is the Linux Desktop of games engines. (That's not a good thing)

    Sounds good for you.
    What are the 3 storefronts you use? Steam and ??? It'd be great to see a vid describing what you like/dislike about each storefront and discuss the fee structures.

      Steam, GOG & Humble. Maybe at some point I'll make a video about them.

    Well balanced view - I am very happy that so many new dev are looking at Godot. It will help in the long run.

    They have also removed the "made with Unity" splash screen for Unity Personal

    • @AuroDev
      @AuroDev  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep! It's optional as long as you start using 2023 LTS version. Previous versions still have it forced though with Personal.

    Will you be upgrading to 2024 LTS?

    • @AuroDev
      @AuroDev  ปีที่แล้ว

      With current projects, probably not. With future projects... Maybe. Will have to see if there are any other carrots other than the splash screen.

    • @AndrisGameDev
      @AndrisGameDev ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AuroDevAnd what will you do with the splash screen tho? Will you pay for PRO or will just accept that your older games (if they need a new build) will show it? Normally I would like to stay on the version I am right now (upgrading is work, too!), but I was on Plus that will cease to exist... sooo... what now?

    • @AuroDev
      @AuroDev  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AndrisGameDev That's also something I haven't decided yet. Upgrading would be nice to get rid of the splash screen as I don't think I will need to pay anything. But... I dread the possibility of creating new bugs due to the upgrade and also having to spend time extra time testing for bugs. Now that I think about that, I think I'm leaning towards not upgrading!

    Happy that this situation is over now! Being a solo dev is hard enough to add all of this nonsense!
    I'm personally fine about paying Unity some money, by using their engine I can do what I do, I'd be like giving the 30% cut to Steam.

    I bet that they could not even track the downloads in the older version of Unity. If that were the case, then this whole debacle was in the works since the beginning. I bet the newer versions of Unity will implement that code/package, and I guarantee that will be in the newest 2024 version. How else would they figure out how many downloads of your product have occurred? They do not have a platform that tallies these, it sounds like spyware.
    I can see this whole bad press thing as a means of getting people to download the newer LTS, this was a market campaign to trick us into seeing them as reasonable and accommodating. What the reality is is that they wanted to release the 2024LTS with the spyware, and this show was making the predatory action more normalized.
    I'm going to keep using my old version of Unity to finish my game. But I think downloading this newest version is a trojan horse. I would advise against it.

    • @AuroDev
      @AuroDev  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think their plan was to just use an algorithm to approximate the amount of installs and use that for invoicing (which is bad too, but not spyware bad). But I mean, who knows.

    • @BuffaloMuff
      @BuffaloMuff ปีที่แล้ว

      Now it seems everything is self reported. I believe all of what they would use to count is already there. Think mobile games and ads share etc. They already have this and since acquiring iron source sure even more ways if they wanted. So mobile devs have already more or less subscribed to what everyone is so upset about.

    It's STILL a runtime fee. That alone is terrible. You need to find a new engine for your next game.

    • @AuroDev
      @AuroDev  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have a problem with what they are calling it, now that they have moved away from the ridiculous install count based fees. Trust is still an issue, but as I talk about in the video, there are mitigating factors.
