We are planning on moving into a desert area in TX, and before I found out about StarLink I thought I’d be stuck with crappy satellite internet, but after I found TH-camrs like you, I was saved!
It has been wonderful. Sure it's not near as fast as fiber, but, it is blazing fast compared to many other services out there. Glad we could help get you that information!
We live in South Texas in the country. No land line internet available here. We got StarLink a couple months ago and it has been a life change. We can’t wait to bring it with us in our RV.
@@timthompsondp It does! We are actually camped in a Nevada State Park right now that has absolutely no cell signal. The great thing is that we can also use our cell phones via the Starlink WiFi network for all functions including phone calls, text, browsing the internet, etc... Verizon allows this and the setting is found in our iPhone settings under "Cellular" ---> "WiFi Calling". I would assume other cell providers would also allow for this.
Always do a reboot from within the Starlink App on the wifi and the router once a day. That will dramatically help with speeds... Also put the dish into stow mode and then hit un stow once a day and that will also force to dish to find a more preferred satellite which helps the speeds big time. I am in a waitlist area with the RV version and my speeds are always up near 70-100Mb download. Get 2-3 mesh units as well.... Huge difference !! AWESOME!!!
Thank you for great short video!!! Amazing with out blah blah blah, I wish I can buy you a beer for your explanation! Keep us posted, I am still undecided whether to get it or not, live in Florida
Thanks for the feedback TZ! I always try to keep it to the point and not drone on in the videos. If I ever get to Florida, I may take you up on that beer! 🍻 Stay tuned for more updates soon...
Ed and Ann, it was great to meet with you in person at Pahrump. Thanks for your imput re our 21 Cougar from Kelowna BC, Canada on our way back from San Carlos, Sonora. Thx for the info on Starlinks. John & Lorna.
It was our pleasure, John! Glad to help with that info. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions either now or in the future. Cheers!
Great news! Home base for me is Lake Tahoe area. I was going to take my Starlink with me on my annual trip to Why, Az. but could not find any open areas so decided to leave it at home. Since I left, SL seems to have opened the 'Roaming' door wide open due to the Ukraine war going on. So now after 2.5 weeks of a 3 week trip, I'm sort of kicking my butt for not bringing it as I barely have a DSL connection going on where I am. Now, we need SL to come out with a terminal that can stay on the roof while traveling and give us true mobilization without having to put a dish up at each stop.
Hi Steven! I'm thinking Starlink kicked into Roaming for us after we moved the dish so many times. We know quite a few people who also have been waiting for it. I believe they will have an official announcement coming soon. We are now up near Las Vegas and it's still working well from the Borrego Springs service address. I would imagine Starlink is also working hard to ge that truly mobile version up and running. That will be a huge market for them. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@EddieAtLarge Glad to do it. BTW, I like your gulf beach posts. I had a beach house that was second row in Spanish Grant in Galveston. Sold it for the RV life but sure miss those beaches.
Great video! Thanks for sharing. We switched to Starlink a couple months ago and love it, so happy to ditch Concast at home. I hope to be able to bring it from our home in NH to my parents cabin in ME this summer. With luck, this will be an option for us soon.
Thanks Keith! I am hearing of more and more people now who are gaining access. If you can, try moving your dish away from your service address to test it. You may need to let it sit for a while before it switches over to roaming. Hope it works out for you!
@@keithviolette5870 if you have access to a terrestrial provider, you don't need starlink. This is why it's already at capacity, because idiots that don't need it are getting it. Anyway, satellite Internet needs to die out like dialup because there is much better technology out there a.k.a. fiber
@@AustinHollingerOfficial I'm not in a city, so my area is no where near capacity. Concast is the only provider in my area, because we are so rural. Thier service is complete crap, and I refuse to pay nearly twice as much for their lousy service as I pay for Starlink, which just works all the time - even when the power is out, which happens here quite frequently. I also take the dish with me when we travel to a remote part of Maine, which has no service of any kind. Good day sir.
@@keithviolette5870 being in the city doesn't matter. Satellites have terrible capacity anyway. Fiber can support hundreds of terabyts of capacity while satellites are usually Limited to nowhere near that. Another problem is crowding the sky with space trash
Can you plese show where the pipe attaches to the back of the dish? We'd love for it to lay flat, so we can leave the dish on the roof while traveling, then use the Pivot Mount to move the pipe up to 90º etc. Is it possible to attach it to a shorter, flatter pipe? If not, and the pipe is permanently attached to Dishy directional motor, does the Pivot mount fold flat? (can you show how much you can move the pipe please? 90º?) If folded "flat", how much does the highest point of dish stick up (ie, re: roof clearance lost)? Does the "handle" on the Pivot Mount just do hand tightening (ie, how hard to loosen and pivot 90º when deploying?) THANKS!
You may get it to lay down, however, it will be at a different angle each time you "stow" it for transport as it gets stowed facing whatever direction it was last facing. So, it may be flat sometimes and angled at a different direction other times. Several other issues that you will run into are that the knob that secures the pivot mount at different angles has a plastic piece that moves the metal gear wheel. This may end up breaking over time by loosening and tightening it over and over again. Also, there is a good chance that the dish will bounce up and down in that position while driving down bumpy forest roads and get damaged. The dish clips in and is easily removed from the mount with the push of a button. I would highly recommend taking it down each time and leaving the pivot mount in the vertical position as that is what we do. Hope that info helps.
I really hope Starlink bring out a version of the dish that has a travel safe mode where it folds down flat on the roof, having to climb up and set it up every time you move is rather primitive and it is now supposedly a 'portable' device.
Starlink has been working on a truly mobile version that will be able to be permanently mounted on a vehicle and will also be able to be used while traveling down the road.
Does your connection wire separate from the dish? With our round Starlink dish we have to drag all 110 feet of cable with as the connection to dish appears permanent.
Hi Dave, yes, the rectangular dish wire does plug in right under the dish through the side of the pipe. We are able to disconnect it at both ends (router and dish) and coil it up for storage. I didn't know that you could not do that with the round dish. It is a nice improvement for sure.
Could this be used at a home? Say I didn’t want to wait for my starlink home internet, would the starlink rv work for same purpose? Please help, not seeing much on this subject.
This version is actually made for home use and modified for RV use. You can get your dish right now if you want to. However, if it is not available in your area, you would have to pay an additional $25 over the $110/month standard fee (Total $135) and use the Portability feature to have service in your location. Here is our video on how to get it now: th-cam.com/video/RFLk3alyXXk/w-d-xo.html and here is our video on Portability: th-cam.com/video/SvkEsPoc4Bo/w-d-xo.html Starlink will eventually come out with a truly mobile version that you can use while driving down the road...
Hi guys, what is the best way to mount the dish v2 on a RV roof? I was planning on using sikaflex to glue 4 round plates with threads in them, and bolt the default mount on them, with rubber bushings in between to reduce vibration damages on the dish. Would love to hear your thoughts on this!
Hi Martin, we purchased the Pivot Mount from Starlink and mounted it on our RV roof. shop.starlink.com/products/us-consumer-pivot-mount-gen2 Here’s our video for the Starlink RV Roof Mount Install + Review Of Other Starlink Mount Options th-cam.com/video/SgJeIrZo2Q4/w-d-xo.html I did not use the bolts that came with the kit and bought shorter lag bolts of the same diameter. Hope this helps! Feel free to let us know if you have any questions.
We received Roaming after we had moved the dish to another location, but, kept the Service Address where it was before we moved. We have now moved the dish to many other locations still keeping that same Service Address and have had excellent service in all locations.
How do you find the closest service addresses? How are you searching for that? Just got RV starlink and am still trying to figure out how to use it with travel (which we haven't started yet)
Hey there! Great news for you! With the Starlink RV version, you won’t need to hunt down the closest service address like we did in this video. At each new location, you’ll just set the dish in the stand and plug in the cable and router. After 2 to 5 minutes, the dish will rotate itself to find the satellites above and you’ll have service. Just make sure you don’t have a lot of trees blocking the dishes view or you’ll get drop outs. If you have already set up the dish at home and it’s working well, you’re good to go! 👍🏻
Been watching lots of your videos, thank you! I have my system to be used at a remote cabin in Wyoming with no mobile service to access during setup. Two questions: (1) can I try setting up the system at my house in an area with no available service locations? (2) if I can’t, is there any issue setting up the system at the cabin in a few weeks where there is no mobile service to connect to for setup?
Hey there @ toddsierer ! Glad you're enjoying our videos and thanks for watching! You will need internet service (either mobile, cable, dsl, etc...) to log into your Starlink account on Starlink.com and to set your service address location. I'm not 100% sure of your situation as I don't think I completely understand from your questions. If you've tried to set your service location as the same as your home address and Starlink responds that there is no availability there yet or that the cell capacity is full, then you will need to find another open service address in an open cell somewhere else and try to use that. When you set a service address at a location away from where your dish is located, Starlink may automatically push you into Roaming and give you service. If that's the case, you would just leave the service address where it is and when you go to your cabin and set up your dish, you will have service there as well in Roaming mode. Let me know if that makes sense.
Thanks for responding! I wasn’t super clear, sorry! I live in SLC and the cabin is in NW Wyoming. The service address is set for the Wyoming location but I won’t be up there for another two months (work, snow pack, I didn’t think I’d get the device so quick). I want to try booting it up here to get familiar with the setup process, but I’m 160 miles from the service location and there are no available slots here in SLC. Wondering if there will be any problems booting it up here as a test. Since it knows my location I don’t want to risk losing my primary service location up in Wyoming. Does that make sense?
That does make sense. I would recommend leaving the WY service address and booting it up. I believe you will have service there in SLC (using the WY service address) and the Roaming flag will be turned on. You can check for this under the settings and then the Debug Data. If it shows a bunch of spikes on the outages screen (like mine did in the video), just reboot again and they should clear up. If for some reason you don’t have service right away, let it set (plugged in) for a few hours or even overnight and that may push it into Roaming. Let me know how it turns out for you. BTW, we are currently camped near Hurricane and will be heading to SLC next week.
@@EddieAtLarge awesome! Just saw another video of a guy in Canada mounting his dishy to the roof of his car and driving at 80 mph with full signal strength…crazy! He showed an update to the Terms of Service that include language around “Portability.” Wonder if this is a temporary feature to support Ukraine or if it’s here to stay…
I think it is here to stay. They may downgrade service while Roaming in areas where the capacity is full. That should then go away as more satellites are put into orbit. There is a guy named Marcus Tuck who is driving around Mexico in his overland vehicle with dishy mounted on top in his spare tire. Same principle, just not 80MPH. 😂 He left his service address in the US and is still getting great service.
It uses about 60 to 70 Watts. We have 3 lithium batteries @ 100 AH each and charge them with 600 Watts of solar. We usually unplug Starlink overnight to save on power usage.
Hi Jim! People have disabled the motors and strapped it to the top of their vehicles, however, this breaches Starlink’s terms of service and is grounds for them terminating your service. They are reportedly working on a version that will be able to be used on moving vehicles. It will probably be a few years for that IMO.
Handy video... we ourselves looking at buying it very soon to live stream from some of the remote parts of Australia - we currently have around 60% country coverage so fingers crossed.
Roaming is more important than speed, to me. I don't want to exercise use that harm's existing service, so I wonder why roaming can't be offered as a conditional function. Step by step, Starlink is turning into a dream come true.
Hey Stanley, there have been reports from a few people who have been using Roaming that have seen a notice pop up in their Starlink app stating "Outside Service Address. Service may be degraded or unavailable during peak times of network usage". We have not seen this message yet though and have been on Roaming for a month now. This may only come into play if you are located in a Starlink cell that is completely saturated with users. Even so, that will probably disappear as they send more satellites up.
@@EddieAtLarge Well that's conditional and fair. Specifically the laser Starlink that transmit data satellite to satellite. The ones that help Tonga and Ukraine.
I meant that when I get this star link dish i am hoping i will be able to turn on roaming with generation And I am 15 years old I wont be able to go any where cause I cant drive a car yet I will be able to purchase this star link dish within 2 months of saving up cash
We are planning on starting our journey early next year. Our plan is to work remotely and this is a great option. How far in advance would you recommend purchasing starlink? We plan to roam cross country so would truly need roaming. Thanks for your video, it was very helpful.
Glad we were able to help you out with our video and congrats on your travel plans! Right now there is typically a very long wait for Starlink, so, you may want to place your order now. You can enter your address on Starlink.com on the order page (don't worry, it won't order it until you pay for it) and it will tell you the expected availability date for your location.
@@EddieAtLarge $99 that not bad, so if roaming is increased to 10 more dollars it worst it. I'm in NC, USA. And the internet isn't available in a lot of places in my area?
Yep. That new price is for everyone. Hopefully they don’t add any cost for Roaming. I’m ok with paying $110 for good reliable service that I can take with me whenever we go.
We have used Starlink now in multiple locations both with and without LTE in the area. Now that we have the Roaming feature enabled, we no longer have to change our Service Address, so, we just plug in the router which in turn powers the dish and we are up and running. We've had great service in all of these locations. Hope that helps answer your question!
Hi Jen! Just go to your Starlink app, then to Settings, then scroll to the bottom to Advanced, then click on Debug Data. Scroll down from there to Dish and look under Alerts for Roaming. If it says True on the right side, you have Roaming! You would need to have your dish set up somewhere away from your current Service Address for it to be activated and showing Roaming as True. If your dish is at your current Service Address, it will always say False. Hope that makes sense. If not let me know and I can try to help you further.
Hi Jacey, do you already have a Starlink Residential dish? If so, you can just turn the Portability feature on and off on a monthly basis and you will only be charged an extra $25 for that month. This is easy to do and can be done right in the app. You will need to do at least that to be able to take the dish with you on your trip. Another option would be to try changing your service address from your home address to where you will be camping, if that address is available. If you do that though, you may not be able to change your service address back to your home address if the cell is full. I would however recommend just turning on the Portability feature to avoid that issue. Let me know if that makes sense. 👍🏻
Joe, Great videos - keep it up. Quick question - Can I use the Service address where we are building a house and use the actual system while full timing in a RV park that is 10 miles from the Service address / will we need “roam” capabilities - see below: Background: - Service address in Fredeicksburg, TX (home site) - Will allow me to order my StarLink system. - If I use the address of the RV Park where are staying (10 miles away) while the house is being built - I get a message from StarLink stating the area is full and it will be 2023 before I can order my system. - What is the probability that I puke order my system; set it up at the property site and then bring it back (10 miles) to the RV park and use it for the next 6-8 months there? Would I need “roaming” privileges? Thank you for your thoughts.
Hey Lee, glad you're enjoying the videos! You will definitely be able to order and use the system as you have stated. Worst case scenario: You order Starlink, set it up at home and move it to the RV Park without being granted Roaming. - You will still have service at that 10 mile distance, however, it will be degraded and you will have buffering and lower speeds. We've been through this plenty of times prior to Roaming (see our prior videos). Service will be usable, just not ideal. Best case scenario: You will have service with Roaming and it will work perfectly. There is a good chance that you will not get Roaming privileges being that close to your home or "Service Address". We did not receive Roaming access until we were about 40 miles away from our Service Address. Sorry, I wish I could give you more of a concrete answer. It will be a roll of the dice.
@@EddieAtLarge Thank you for your prompt and detailed response. I placed my StarLink order last night, expected delivery in 2 weeks. I went into GOOGLE Maps and it’s 8.9 miles from my build / home / service address to our RV park. I’ll let you know how it works.
Did not know that! Makes sense for standard satellite dishes, but, Dishy McFlatface is flat. No birds taking a bath on that. 😉 Thanks for watching and commenting!
We no longer have to change our address now that we have Roaming. Before we had Roaming, we had to continually search for available addresses in open cells which was very hard to do. Our previous videos go into further detail on how we did this.
Great video. I'm still learning Starlink and have a question. I don't have the Roaming capability yet. But want to try Starlink at my parents home which is 50+ miles away from my home (service location). What steps did I have to do to get it working.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video. I would recommend just taking your dish to your parents home and setting it up as normal without moving the Service Address. It may or may not kick into Roaming mode. If it doesn't kick in right away, just let it sit powered up and it will be in search mode looking for Satellites. It took ours sitting like this overnight before we received Roaming. Others have said that it kicked in right away for them. Let us know how it works out for you. Good luck!
If you cant get roaming mode, contact Starlink support (go to their FAQ, view an article, and click THUMBS DOWN that it didnt answer your question - then ask staff if you can have roaming because you really need it!)
@@theSato Starlink has officially released "Portability" which is Roaming with a price tag. Here's our latest video on the update... th-cam.com/video/SvkEsPoc4Bo/w-d-xo.html
Hello! You should be able to try Roaming in Canada. Starlink still has not officially released any information about the Roaming feature. Users who have contacted them have been told that it is not something that they can grant them access to at this time. If you have a dish and you travel with it, you may just be granted access like we have been. We have heard from quite a few other people now who have been granted access. My best advice would be to take your dish away from your home, leaving the service address as your home address and power up your dish. It is my belief that you'll need to be further than 20 miles from your service address before Roaming will be activated. We know of one user who purchased a dish in the US, is now traveling throughout Mexico with his Starlink and still using the US service address with no issues and great service. I believe it should work the same for Canada.
Hi Maximus, you can see this in the Starlink App. In the app, go to "Settings" then "Advanced" then to "Debug Data". Under the Debug Data, look under "Dish" and "Alerts", it will show the Roaming flag there. If it says "True" next to it, then you have Roaming. If it says "False" next to it, you do not have Roaming. If your dish is located at your registered Service Address, it will always show False for Roaming. The only way you will know if you have Roaming is if you take your dish and set it up somewhere away from your registered Service Address.
Hi Jeff, yes, we do remove it before traveling. We installed a residential roof mount on the rig made by Starlink. th-cam.com/video/SgJeIrZo2Q4/w-d-xo.html it’s easy to pop on and off of the mount.
Hi Phillip. With Roaming, you just keep the same service address in your account settings and there’s no need to change it. When you move the dish to another location, you set it up as normal, let it boot up and it will then automatically find the satellites. You can’t apply for Roaming access. Starlink has not officially released it yet. I thought that we have gained access because we have moved the dish about 8 times now, however, someone else just commented that they just got their new dish and they are connected to a service address 50 miles away. I know other people though that travel with their dish and still do not have it enabled. My guess is that Starlink will start letting more and more people have it as they see them moving with it.
Good morning, I just ordered Starlink and noticed you travel the same causeway as I do to get into town. How is the service on the island? Thank you guys for sharing your adventure.
Hey Gary! Service on the island was REALLY good! Here's our 2 week update from when we were still in Port A. th-cam.com/video/nB5d8zqnvug/w-d-xo.html Thanks for joining us!
When moving to a new location, it takes about 5 to 10 minutes to boot, search for satellites and orient to the optimal position. Once we are in a new location and it's been set up, we usually unplug overnight to save on our RV batteries. When we turn power back on in the morning, it only takes a few minutes as it's already set and pointing in the right direction.
Hi Philip, We use it to stream TV (TH-cam TV), regular TH-cam and other streaming services like Amazon Prime, etc... We also can use it to make phone calls using our cell phone WiFi calling capability which we will be talking about in our next video. All other cell phone functions are also usable via Starlink WiFi connection. Hope that helps answer your question!
There is now an option to purchase Roaming which Starlink is now calling “Portability”. The cost is $25 per month and can be turned on and off in the account settings. We just turned it on a few days ago when our Roaming stopped working for us. Starlink will charge us on our next billing invoice at the beginning of June.
Hi Pete, the RV version is actually the same equipment as our residential version. The only difference is in the service plan. We now just have to enable "Portability" in our account which allows us to move and use our dish at any location just like the RV plan. We are charged $25 additional per month when Portability is enabled. Both the RV plan and our dish while in Portability mode will be deprioritized (slower speeds) if we are in a cell that is congested. With the residential version, we have a home "Service address" in Texas and when we are at that address, we disable Portability, save $25 per month and have priority for our service. Hope that all makes sense. Here is a link to a newer video that explains this a bit more: th-cam.com/video/SvkEsPoc4Bo/w-d-xo.html Thanks for watching!
Your updates are awesome! Really helping weigh in on my decision. Question: How much of a pain is it to clamp dishy on to the mount? My wife and I have a van, but I dont want to leave it on while driving. I was thinking I could install a mount, then slap dishy on the roof every time we find our next stay. By the way, nice precision accuracy on getting that bug! lol
Thanks, glad to share! It is very easy to put the dish into the mount. All you need to do is insert the communication cable, slide the dish post into the mount receiver and it just snaps right in place.
Hi Landon. Yes, we can use the app to reset the dish and/or router, however, I don't understand why you are asking about this. Can you please elaborate? Thanks.
The app says that Starlink is at capacity in my area, and that my order may not ship until 2023. I wonder if I change my service area to a location that is not at capacity, will my order ship sooner?
Hi Don, this is possible to do as we have outlined in one of our previous videos. Check it out here: th-cam.com/video/RFLk3alyXXk/w-d-xo.html There is a risk that you may not be able to get service though when you receive your dish because your cell is still at capacity.
There is a reason there is a capacity limit. This service will eventually become just as bad as Viasat and the other terrible satellite companies because of people trying to cheat their way in
The speeds look great, but I kept noticing the packet loss on all those tests. Streaming tv and things like that don't require a steady connection, but working from home does. Packet loss means parts of conversations are simply gone, so you would have to keep asking your customer what they said. When you say you were able to do everything on the internet, I bet that wouldn't be the case if you had to test it while being connected to a work VPN or remote desktop environment. Some work VPN's will not let you reconnect automatically if there is any interruption in service without completely restarting the application or computer. Even if you can reconnect, this means dropped calls. I have been working from home for over 10 years and in an area that, to this day, has never offered anything above dial up internet. The nearest Walmart is in the next state, and that Walmart is so small, it's not even open 24/7 to give you an idea of how rural it is. I tried satellite internet many times, and while I know Starlink is a LOT better than HughesNet and Viasat (same thing) and the others, it is still satellite internet if you're thinking of using it to work from home. If all you do is submit something here and there, you'd be fine if you don't really need a constant connection. The dropping and sometimes rearranging of packets (you might hear someone talking but you might hear the last 5 seconds in the middle of the sentence, or if you look carefully at TH-cam or Netflix, you'll notice the buffer bar seems to buffer random sections. You might load the last 5 minutes of a video before minutes 2 to 4 load, which means you'll end up with buffering even though you can see red on the buffer bar) is the reason satellite internet isn't actually considered "live" internet by most work from home companies and solutions. There is a reason you don't see many videos of people taking about working from home with Starlink. I still work from "home" even though I've been living and traveling in my converted school bus for several years now. AT&T hasn't let me down yet, I haven't had to get a Verizon or T-Mobile back up yet. The other thing about satellite is that it's still a satellite and a receiver box inside, whereas with my AT&T internet, I use the Netgear Nighthawk 5G Modem (also had the prior LTE model), so I can just pick it up and take it anywhere and enjoy working on the beach or on some remote trail I'm hiking on because that modem is barely bigger than a phone and has a very, VERY long lasting battery. I truly get to enjoy the absolute best of working remotely while living as a nomad because I' m not tethered to a satellite. I can't stress enough for all of you out there working from home or thinking about it, if you use a VPN and/or connect to a remote desktop environment, or if you have to be on video calls or audio only chat, satellite internet won't work if your packet loss is above 0%. However, if you're just needing something to use to watch videos, keep your gaming consoles up to date, check your emails, things like that, then yes, satellite will be a great option for you where LTE and 5G isn't available. If you have NO packet loss and ping under 150 ms, you only need about 25 mbps download speeds and 1.5 mbps upload speeds to work from home taking live calls behind a VPN and/or remote desktop environment (such as VMWare and Microsoft's Remote Desktop) without experiencing any garbled sounds, freezing remote desktop environments, dropped calls, etc. I know people that record speeds over 200 mbps with Starlink that still can't stay connected to a VPN or remote desktop without losing calls. Don't look at the speed itself and think your internet should work for the more demanding tasks of working from home. Most important numbers are packet loss, which should be 0, no exceptions to that (you can also see this by going into your internet settings on your device), then make sure your latency is under 150 ms (that's usually very easy to accomplish with nearly any provider), and then take speed into consideration making sure it's above 25 mbps down and 1.5 mbps up.
Hello and thank you for your detailed input and experience with work from home services. We personally do not use a VPN or a have need of a remote desktop environment and therefore can not speak to how well Starlink would work in those applications. I did want to point out that the majority of these speed tests were done in locations where we were not in an open Starlink cell and had to connect to a remote service address and that is why many of these speed tests were showing such bad packet loss. Now that we have the Roaming feature enabled, packet loss has decreased, but, has clearly not been eliminated. We have done 22 speed tests since with 7 of the 22 having packet loss. .4, 1.8, 3.9, .41, .77, .36, .93 The last 8 tests have had 0 packet loss. It will be interesting to watch moving forward to see if this improves or not. I'll monitor this and post an update in a future video.
I've had one viewer tell me that he took his out on his boat on Lake Powell and had service. I believe it would work with Roaming enabled. There have been a few people who have disabled the motor and mounted to point straight up on top of their vehicles. They then drive around with it and said they have service. I would think anywhere there are satellites above you, you'd be able to use it with the Roaming function. Check out this live satellite map if you have not seen it yet... satellitemap.space Using it in this manor, you most likely will have service, however, it will not be optimal as the dish is designed to be stationary and automatically adjusts to the best position for satellite reception.
Thanks. We have been hearing of more people who have been given access since we released this video. Hopefully it will stay that way as there still is no official word from Starlink. It’s still working great after moving locations several more times.
Wonder if the channel has mentioned how it got roving if they know…he seems to indicate it’s just a thing and it just happened/s but it’s not clear for sure if that’s the case.
We did just obtain Roaming without any indication from Starlink that it would be initiated. I believe it was enabled due to our movement away from our service address at multiple locations. This is all is a mute point now though now that Starlink has made Roaming official and has named it "Portability". They are charging us a $25 add on fee for this privilege. It is well worth it for our situation. Here is a link to our latest video about Portability: th-cam.com/video/SvkEsPoc4Bo/w-d-xo.html
Hey, Homie! Thanks for this video. We have Starlink now and are moving to a rural place where we'll really need it. When we took dishy out there to test it, though, it let us connect for about 15s and then dropped us like we were hot. We tried to change our service address and got the message, "sorry, out of capacity" with no way to contact service (at least, no way as far as we could find to explain the situation). Should we take it out to the new house and let it run overnight to see if Roaming will turn on? And...if anyone out there has the secret decoder ring for getting a hold of Starlink, that would be awesome.
Hi Patricia! Sorry to hear it didn't work right out of the box for you. I have a decoder ring for you! You can contact Starlink by going into the Support section on their website, go to any topic and hit the thumbs down where it asks "Did this answer your question?". This will then redirect you to a dialog box where you can send them a message about your issue. It usually takes them several days to respond. They should be able to give you access if you had been able to order Starlink with your current address where you had them bill and ship it to. If for some reason they refuse to help, there is a work around. You'll have to find a location to plug in for your Service Address that is in an open cell. I would recommend using Google Maps to click and copy random Google Plus codes in the surrounding area to see if you can get into an open cell. If you are unsure what Google Plus codes are, just Google it! 😉 Try in increments of 10 to 12 miles (cells are about 12 miles in diameter). It's usually best to try rural areas. Maybe start with an address in the area where you will be moving to. Once you find an address that works, then plug in or reboot your dish to see if you have Roaming enabled. If you do, you should then have service. Let us know how things work out for you and also if you have any further questions. Best of luck!
@@EddieAtLarge Aaaaah OK. So if we e-mail them and say, "PLEASE let us use Starlink at our new house because we are not a new customer; we love you now and want to stay with you and we'll send cookies" they may help. If not, we'll try the workaround for sure. Thank you so much! It would be a total drag if we couldn't take SL with us.
We got lucky. We are mobile and were spending 3 months at an RV Park near Corpus Christi, TX, so, we decided to change our service address to the RV Park. A few weeks later, we got a notice that the dish was ready to ship to that new address. Prior to that, we were also on the waiting list.
What is puzzling me is isn't Starlink satellite based, and why is an "open cell" necessary? I was under the impression that you should have coverage anywhere you had an unobstructed view of the sky in the proper direction.
Since this video was released, Starlink now has a system set up called Portability that allows us to travel anywhere with Starlink and obtain service just as you have stated. No more need to worry about having an open cell. Here’s our latest video that talks about the Portability feature. th-cam.com/video/SvkEsPoc4Bo/w-d-xo.html
A quick happy note from my wife and me. Our divorce becomes final this afternoon!!! I received a voice message yesterday morning confirming that the port of our home phone number will be completed today. NO MORE CENTURYLINK. We will still have our same home phone number but with many new options with the new VOIP phone service using Starlink wifi. And I will not even have to pay alimony to centurylink. No more ransom payments either. We finally found a viable option to cut the cord that had us bound to the ridiculously slow, expensive, unreliable internet and phone service that we have been held captive by for years. As I said previously our “high speed DSL internet service" maxed out at about 0.4Mbps, on a good day. With my Starlink dish temporarily located on a pole until I have it permanently installed on the gable end of our home over 30 feet above the ground (and I have a plan to get it there), I have had speeds up to 197Mbps. Perhaps this will increase when my installation is finally completed.
Yesterday I called centurylink to make sure my account has been cancelled. The customer service rep asked for all the usual….name, address, account number, phone number. Finally he asked for the account password. When I said “POOR SERVICE” he actually laughed. (May not be good for him since we WERE on a recorded call.) I said “I see you caught that!” He continued to laugh when I told him the password would soon be changed to “NO SERVICE.” Boy do I love it.
I agree that they are a little low. Hopefully once they get more of the version 2 satellites with laser communication up there, upload speeds will improve. Even so, I uploaded this video in a few hours and it would’ve taken me a day to do so with our old Visible cell service.
@@EddieAtLarge Well I wonder what the bottleneck is, I don't think the lasers will improve upload speeds, they just improve latency or fill in for where there aren't ground stations.
@@EddieAtLarge Possibly. I think they are on separate bands/channels. It's hard to know what the bottleneck is, but I hope they improve upload speeds, 30-40 mbps consistently would be great.
@@QuantumBraced they only care about keeping their federal funding. To do that, they must keep download and upload within 100/20. The American people are paying for this grifter😂
Waaaazzzzzzuuuup Driver! 🤣 It did update on its own. I think because we kept moving around and it recognized that. Have you tried moving it away from your service address?
@@EddieAtLarge lol.. I'm parked semi (no pun intended) long term on a friends property. Saving to get my own land. I might stow it and take it to a friends house over near the Oregon coast one of these days and try it.
Cool! Lemme know if you get it into Roaming over there. If it doesn’t kick in right away, let it sit and search for a while (hours or even overnight) and it may move it into Roaming.
@@EddieAtLarge I can do that Homie.. But it's been online for well over a month. Not worried about it now.. but It might auto update if I do take it to the coast.
Are you still being charged $100 a month for your service, or are you paying $500 a month the new service plan? Your speed test look like your still on original plan?
We are currently at $100. The $500 service plan is for the “Premium” dish that is larger and has a stronger receiver/transmitter. Ours is the smaller rectangular dish. Starlink did just announce that our plan will increase to $110 per month on April 24th due to the rising costs of inflation.
I'm wondering if you can find a "RaDome" that will cover the antenna (similar as what a ship would use). This way you could test service while driving. I know this is suppose to be the next new thing for ships and shipping. Keep up the great work!
Thanks Don! Check out this video by Mike On Space where he mounts his dish on the roof of his car and drives around with it. th-cam.com/video/8PDVURcvWeg/w-d-xo.html
We still have Roaming after almost 2 months now, 575 miles from our service address. Still working great with avg of 200 Mbps download speeds. Getting a lot of reports from others who have Roaming enabled now as well.
Too bad getting Starlink in my area of Western NY is at capacity and unavailable until "2023 or Later" That's a hard pass from me. As a 60 year old RVer, I doubt I'll ever have Starlink even though I would love to have it.
RH63 Check out our other video on how to possibly get it now: th-cam.com/video/RFLk3alyXXk/w-d-xo.html You may then be able to use it on the road with the Roaming feature. Ours is still working great on Roaming.
Hey Doug! Yes, Roaming is the best thing that’s happened to Starlink for travelers. We’re on our 3rd stop now and it’s still going strong. Updates to follow.
Rats, I live in the Palm Springs area and got this with my address: “Starlink is currently at capacity in your area, so your order may not be fulfilled until 2023”
Hello Hart. Check out our video on how you may possibly get your dishy sooner. th-cam.com/video/RFLk3alyXXk/w-d-xo.html BTW, we stopped in to Palm Springs just a month ago to eat at Sherman's Deli. It was awesome!

Please be careful in the Mojave when you get into what looks like a dry run (7:21). They have enormous flash floods that come out of nowhere and will sweep everything away.
Thank you for your concern! We did look at that when we first arrived and decided that it was safe there. There wad a hill behind us that can not be readily seen which would protect from water runoff. There is however a very large wash adjacent to that campsite, but, we felt we would be protected by the landscape if there would have been a flash flood.

I agree. We have yet to see how this will change the world!
On almost the level of Nicola Tesla 🥰
We are planning on moving into a desert area in TX, and before I found out about StarLink I thought I’d be stuck with crappy satellite internet, but after I found TH-camrs like you, I was saved!
It has been wonderful. Sure it's not near as fast as fiber, but, it is blazing fast compared to many other services out there. Glad we could help get you that information!
We live in South Texas in the country. No land line internet available here. We got StarLink a couple months ago and it has been a life change. We can’t wait to bring it with us in our RV.
@@EddieAtLarge Does it work in areas that dont have cell service?
AWESOME!!!
good to know they have roaming now, we live in our vintage RV, based in the smoky mountains, but we do travel sometimes

My dish arrived today. Registered address is 50 miles away from me. Works fine. Roaming is enabled .
Awesome! They must be opening it up more. We have some friends with Starlink who travel and still do not have it.
This is great. Those ping times are more than acceptable.
We love it! New video coming out tomorrow with updates...
@@EddieAtLarge Thanks for the advice. Should be testing it out sometime next month.
@@keithviolette5870 if you have access to a terrestrial provider, you don't need starlink. This is why it's already at capacity, because idiots that don't need it are getting it. Anyway, satellite Internet needs to die out like dialup because there is much better technology out there a.k.a. fiber
@@AustinHollingerOfficial
I'm not in a city, so my area is no where near capacity.
Always informative, Ed and Ann...I hope all is going well. Have been in Phoenix this week for my annual work training. Heading back to Ouray today.
Thanks Alan! We are doing well camping up closer to Vegas now. We got out of CA to get away from those high fuel prices. Hope you're enjoying Pheonix!
Wow that is pretty wild being in Joshua tree with 150mbs internet
I really hope Starlink bring out a version of the dish that has a travel safe mode where it folds down flat on the roof, having to climb up and set it up every time you move is rather primitive and it is now supposedly a 'portable' device.
Starlink has been working on a truly mobile version that will be able to be permanently mounted on a vehicle and will also be able to be used while traveling down the road.
Enjoyed the video, thank you
Nice!! I just checked mine but don't have roaming enabled yet but that's ok we arent traveling just yet. Glad for you guys!!
Thank you! I’m guessing that once you start moving around with it, it will get enabled for you. Enjoy your travels!

Great vid! This information was super useful for me as I am planning to connect somewhere off the starlink grid soon.
Thank you Emanuel! Glad it was helpful.
Do you have to do something specific to get the roaming function?
What do you have to do to get roaming?
We received Roaming after we had moved the dish to another location, but, kept the Service Address where it was before we moved. We have now moved the dish to many other locations still keeping that same Service Address and have had excellent service in all locations.
good info. How are y'all finding the power consumption on the road?
Thanks Shane! Power consumption isn’t bad. Starlink is using around 65W on average. We turn it off overnight to conserve power.
You did very well
Been watching lots of your videos, thank you!
This is awesome.
What is the power consumption for Starlink? Are you running it with solar?
It uses about 60 to 70 Watts. We have 3 lithium batteries @ 100 AH each and charge them with 600 Watts of solar. We usually unplug Starlink overnight to save on power usage.
Could you use the system even if your vehicle is moving? Thanks for a great video.
Hi Jim! People have disabled the motors and strapped it to the top of their vehicles, however, this breaches Starlink’s terms of service and is grounds for them terminating your service. They are reportedly working on a version that will be able to be used on moving vehicles. It will probably be a few years for that IMO.
@@EddieAtLarge The RV version can be used while moving

Have you tried the hold dish (the round one)? I have this one but i'm waiting the roaming feature to use it. I think the speeds are lower.
We have not used the round dish. Our square dish typically gets over 200mbps. This includes moving to multiple locations while Roaming.

Does roaming enable cost more? Then a fix home base? Average monthly cost now.
It doesn’t cost anything additional. We are currently at $99, but, just got notified that it’s going up to $110.
Just curious did you end up at a location with no LTE but got starlink working?
We have used Starlink now in multiple locations both with and without LTE in the area. Now that we have the Roaming feature enabled, we no longer have to change our Service Address, so, we just plug in the router which in turn powers the dish and we are up and running. We've had great service in all of these locations. Hope that helps answer your question!
Thats good im on the same beach you were at in Texas i was wondering about getting it
Cool! It's great. Highly recommend it. 👍🏻
I’ve have starlink for over a year. Would love to take it in our RV. Where do I look to see if I have roaming enabled?
Did you contact starlink to get your roaming activated. Curious as I am in northern Alberta canada
We did not. It just automatically kicked in after we had moved locations multiple times.
If I camp once a year still in the states do I need any special service just for a couple weeks? Thanks all
Hi Jacey, do you already have a Starlink Residential dish? If so, you can just turn the Portability feature on and off on a monthly basis and you will only be charged an extra $25 for that month. This is easy to do and can be done right in the app. You will need to do at least that to be able to take the dish with you on your trip. Another option would be to try changing your service address from your home address to where you will be camping, if that address is available. If you do that though, you may not be able to change your service address back to your home address if the cell is full. I would however recommend just turning on the Portability feature to avoid that issue. Let me know if that makes sense. 👍🏻
@@EddieAtLarge that does make sense thank you! Do I need to turn on portability prior to leaving my home with the dish?

Thank you for your prompt and detailed response. I placed my StarLink order last night, expected delivery in 2 weeks. I went into GOOGLE Maps and it’s 8.9 miles from my build / home / service address to our RV park. I’ll let you know how it works.
Dead fish mode is called Bird Bath position in SATCOM lingo.
Did not know that! Makes sense for standard satellite dishes, but, Dishy McFlatface is flat. No birds taking a bath on that. 😉 Thanks for watching and commenting!
sounds 🆒😎
How do you know what addresses to put when you’re in a new spot?
Does star link support Wi-Fi calling on a cell phone?
It does. Works well. We’ve used it many times while camping in areas where we have absolutely zero cell signal.
Do you know if it is possible to try Starlink rooming in Quebec Canada, and how to contact Starlink to offer
Wow!
How can someone check to see if they've been included in the beta for roaming?
Hi Maximus, you can see this in the Starlink App. In the app, go to "Settings" then "Advanced" then to "Debug Data". Under the Debug Data, look under "Dish" and "Alerts", it will show the Roaming flag there. If it says "True" next to it, then you have Roaming. If it says "False" next to it, you do not have Roaming. If your dish is located at your registered Service Address, it will always show False for Roaming. The only way you will know if you have Roaming is if you take your dish and set it up somewhere away from your registered Service Address.
@@EddieAtLarge Great info. Thank you very much.
Do You have to climb up on the roof every time you stop ?
Hi Jeff, yes, we do remove it before traveling. We installed a residential roof mount on the rig made by Starlink.
th-cam.com/video/SgJeIrZo2Q4/w-d-xo.html it’s easy to pop on and off of the mount.
How do you take it anywhere? I thought you could only add 3 locations for the time owning your starlink?
An roaming feature. How do you apply?!
0:47 woah how did you do that jumpcut i'm scratching my head here
Are you referring to the scene switch to the beach or something else?
That is really cool. How long does it take the router to (re)boot up?
When moving to a new location, it takes about 5 to 10 minutes to boot, search for satellites and orient to the optimal position. Once we are in a new location and it's been set up, we usually unplug overnight to save on our RV batteries. When we turn power back on in the morning, it only takes a few minutes as it's already set and pointing in the right direction.
Interested in Starlink. However, other than internet what can you access … EX TV, Cellphone, CNN, HBO, etc.
Does starlink roaming work for everyone now?
There is now an option to purchase Roaming which Starlink is now calling “Portability”. The cost is $25 per month and can be turned on and off in the account settings. We just turned it on a few days ago when our Roaming stopped working for us. Starlink will charge us on our next billing invoice at the beginning of June.
I now have the RV version it's better I think for reception and allows use on the move.
@@EddieAtLarge Perfect. Thank you!!
can you not use the app to reset it each time?
I'll monitor this and post an update in a future video.
do you know if star link Internet works offshore? Im a sailor.
Nice to see you have roaming . When he gave Ukraine satellite dishes he enabled rowing everywhere You're not one of the special few everybody has it
Thanks. We have been hearing of more people who have been given access since we released this video. Hopefully it will stay that way as there still is no official word from Starlink. It’s still working great after moving locations several more times.
But what is the power draw ?
About 65 Watts
Is roaming now not an issue?
Yep, no longer an issue! 👍🏻
@@EddieAtLarge thanks!
Is this the portable feature they just mentioned for $25 extra a month
Hey Brenton, it is the same, just now has an official name.
Still Roaming, still working great 575 miles from our service address.
The big question is how did you get Starlink it's on a waiting list for everyone!???
LOL!!! Congrats Dean! That’s gotta be a huge relief. And welcome to the Starlink club. Enjoy!
Yesterday I called centurylink to make sure my account has been cancelled. The customer service rep asked for all the usual….name, address, account number, phone number. Finally he asked for the account password. When I said “POOR SERVICE” he actually laughed. (May not be good for him since we WERE on a recorded call.) I said “I see you caught that!” He continued to laugh when I told him the password would soon be changed to
“NO SERVICE.”
Boy do I love it.

The upload speeds are quite underwhelming. I hope they boost them in the future.
That’s a good point. Maybe they are throttling upload to help increase download as many people probably wouldn’t care about upload speeds as much.
