Well yeah I can see why they was mad. Especially at Johnny since he wasn’t an original member. That’s could come off as a Puffy move. But I see his logic.
I get the reason behind protecting the brand, but how in the beginning did it start being owned under Johnny and Ralph? Did they have a company together and it was bought under that? Was Ralph chillin in the living room with Johnny when he got that call from the lawyer? Why couldn’t they all get on the conference call and make it happen? I’m glad it all sorted out but it feels like it was forced to be sorted out because the other four were going to bring it to court.
How ever it came about that the trademark wasn't owned by the group, they should've had a sit down and discussed it before it was bought by johnny and ralph, I'm sure they knew they would profit off the use by anyone of the name. I would've been upset
I have been a fan of New Edition since Candy Girl dropped. I totally understand why Johnny followed thru with the trademark + him and Ralph are best friends. Johnny isn't only the oldest in NE; he has been in the Entertainment Industry longer and is more mature given his childhood of a 2-parent home and a strong spiritual foundation. New Edition was marketed as a Pop Group but dem fellas was from "da hood"; no shade just the truth. The trademark move was necessary and it's a reflection of how business affairs with the New Edition brand wasn't as tight as they should've been. They missed out on a lot of money not capitalizing off their 2017 BET Biopic with a tour. It would've been massive but too much ego got in the way & they couldn't see the bigger picture as a Brand. I would've been like when are we rehearsing for da tour cuz I'm trying to secure the bag. 🤷🏾♀️
I remember thinking the same thing (rewatched the biopic for the first time in A LONG TIME over the weekend) because you could argue that NE could've made back ALL of the money they were cheated out of by Maurice, Jump & Shoot, the Home Again Tour (they dropped the ball themselves there), etc. with a huge tour and new album. However, the movie clearly reopened wounds and whatnot. I know it's rough, but they should've fought through that pain and made that BANK!
Here's the thing. As business savvy as Michael Bivins is I'm surprised he didn't buy the New Edition trademark years ago. Any one could've bought their group name and then they really would've had issues.
I’m just glad y’all stuck together. The main thing you basically wanted the same thing. The rest was just being being human mistakes miscommunication and pride
Vlad disrespecting New Edition again. Ricky ALREADY told him RBRM had no intention of using NE name and that them not owning the name is not the reason they used RBRM.
I’m from Brazil and grew up listening to New Edition but I’m in total shock in learning after decades in the Business, no member ever thought about Trademark the group name ? I mean, they formed in 1978 and Brooke Payne gave them the name, why didn’t he Trademark it then ? And to think this came about right when their Biopic was about to be released and the plan was to drop a album and tour right after the biopic only for them to go to war with each other instead over this trademark 😲😳 man oh man, if anyone were to ask me to name an example of a fumbled bag, this right here would be it. They attracted new and old fans from that biopic and could’ve capitalized on it big time, they truly raised their stock with that biopic, I don’t think they could ever reach that high of hot topic like they generated after that biopic release. They truly fumbled the bag big time, they could’ve made millions, probably to the tune of making up for the money they didn’t receive when they were young. Man and to think all this could’ve been avoided if they would’ve handled this whole trademark decades ago or they came together as a group and handled business.
This was a great idea b/c each member could have essentially used the name and there would have been 6 splinter New Edition groups, which lessens and waters down the brand and makes them less attractive to promoters, which cuts into their earning potential.
Hey to me I don’t care when Johnny came in the group. It’s his group just as much as it is the original 5. Johnny been around since 88, and put his time in…..too took New Edition to another level, and him joining them took his career to another level.
Hopefully everyone is protected!!! I Believe The Jacksons were never acknowledged Bet Awards, Soul Train, Nor American Music Awards... Sad including all of past groups...
once he explained it that way, that's the realest thing to do. Gotta respect it. plus, i know why it was him and Ralph. And not another member of the group it makes perfect sense
@herbtapp3031 I understand trademark laws very well. He trademarked the name and wouldn't go on tour because he was mad that they didn't put his story in the mini series. That was his way of getting back at them.
@@stunnabreezy3what you mean? Wasn't he in the mini series when it was time for him to be? It's been a while since I've seen it but I definitely remember him being on there. Besides they should've made more films and continued the story anyway like they did with Bobby's story. NE always has internal issues but they always come back!
@nathanscipio6148 no they had to keep pushing the series back because everytime the film crew went to DC he never showed up. So he got mad when they finally wrapped and put it out.
I disagree, JG isn’t a step brother. Technically he was with NE longer than Bobby. I met Ronnie last year and I had the chance to tell him how happy I am to see all 6 together and getting along.
Johnny, even if he was the last to join, is as much a legal member of New Edition as any other member. Therefore, he has the right to secure the copyright.
@pensiveczar2239 We'll just agree to disagree on that. New edition was a well known, established group before Johnny was asked to replace Bobby. If bobby hadn't left Johnny would have never been in the group at all so how he gone take ownership of the name?
@@robertb1275 lets keep it real here. if Johnny doesnt join NE at that junction, there may not have been an NE as we know it. Heartbreak and everything after may not even exist. Sure, if Bobby doesnt get kicked out then Johnny likely never joins, but blame Bobby for that. End of the day, Johnny was and is still a member of NE for well over 30 years. So he (and Ralph) did what the others likely werent even thinking about, to protect the group.
You’re right, Ralph and Bobby were real close. But they had a falling out some years ago and Ralph wasn’t speaking to him for years and this was all during the trademark situation. They’re cool now but I don’t know if they’ll ever go back to being that close again.
Bobby and Ralph were definitely the David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks of New Edition in both style and personality. The only difference is that Bobby actually survived his issues and David didn't
@@jaygotbandz1you know NE never let out their dirty laundry. So that will never be confirmed. But it explains why that your stopped in 2017 and I tend to believe Bobby’s nephew because it hasn’t been refuted by the group.
It's good that someone who was actually a member of the group obtained the ownership of the Trademark Group name... What if one day some of their talented kids want to start a New...New Edition group.... Like New Edition 2.0...made up of the kids...So and So's sons and Daughters..
I had a hunch that they'd bounce back from this. There's only one New Edition member who can say they've consistently had a successful music career outside of the group and it's not any of the original five lol. NE is their bread and butter. Yes they all have their decent side endeavors and sure, Biv has been Mr. Big Shot Multimillionaire Mogul for a few decades now but even HE knows he can't resist that sweet steady NE tour income, let's be real 😆. They were gonna work this out SOMEHOW and they knew it. There was too much money at stake not to. The drama of it all just stirred up interest for when they all hit the stage again like we knew they would lol. The Legacy tour was lit, wouldn't you say? I love this group lmao
Johnny is not even an original member so him buying the trademark is a NO for me. I understand Ralph who has been the lead man the entire duration. Johnny can have several seats. The only reason Johnny kept coming back to NE was because his solo career peaked quickly and he needed to pay the bills. Had he had Gerald Levert or Keith Sweat type success he would have left NE and LSG in the dust.
It doesn't matter if he's a original member or not. It's show BUSINESS. It's 95% business and 5% show. You are entitled to your own opinion but not your own facts. When it comes down to business it doesn't matter "what you feel". The business is what it is. Whatever is on paper or NOT on paper is how this plays out. Simple as that.
He became a Member of NE because Ralph was going solo so some people of NE thought they need a new lead singer so it's not about that he needed money. Try to find the real reason why johnny became a Member instead of saying that he needed money.
i can't remember who exactly but on R.B.R.M breakfast club intervew they spoke on it. Said johnny came to everyone & no one rush to hop on it except ralph. They thought it was still open since no one owned it. But they knew
Johnny and Ralph were wrong for that period. At the time I remember them both playing the victim. Wish they would have clued in their group members about them trade marking New Edition. Glad it’s all worked out though.
Johnny Gill was his own solo artist before New Edition! NE asked Johnny to join the group when Bobby left. They never treated Johnny right while in the group.
It's good that they secured the trademark of the name, but I don't buy the argument that a member of New Edition might go and start his own group with other singers and call it New Edition like the Temptations did. No member of New Edition would ever create a fake New Edition with a new line up of new singers that were not previously in the group. They don't have to do this because they all have solo success and can always tour as solo acts.
I hear your point but look at the Temptations. David Ruffin, Eddie Kendrick, and Dennis Edwards all had successful solo careers but got other singers and toured as the Temptations until Otis Williams successfully won in court to prevent this from happening. Because of the egos involved I could see members of New Edition doing the same thing.
@@dsmiley1971 True. That's a good point but after all these years of me following New Edition (since Candy Girl) it's hard for me to picture any one of them doing that. Which member of New Edition do you think would be likely to start his own version of New Edition, hire new singers and tour?
Sheeeeit technically Bobby, Ronnie, Mike and Ricky (RBRM) did just that 😂 they may not have called it New Edition but they basically created a separate group (out of spite) excluding Johnny and Ralph.

Well yeah I can see why they was mad. Especially at Johnny since he wasn’t an original member. That’s could come off as a Puffy move. But I see his logic.
He basically said, "Ralph and I got the name because we don't trust any of y'all." Of course, hell broke loose!
Never trademark a group name in your own name, the others will be hurt, justifiably so.
100 percent correct. don't let the brand fall in the mud. and you get the money off your name.
Ralph was essentially the only one at the time willing to listen.
How does his explanation play out with the Logline of "Me and Tresvant bought the Trademark?" Click bait.
Here's the thing. As business savvy as Michael Bivins is I'm surprised he didn't buy the New Edition trademark years ago. Any one could've bought their group name and then they really would've had issues.
Johnny"s always been smart and humble.
Still Johnny did a smart business move...but they all not going to talk about why tour didn't happen and rightfully so
He still looks like the type to wear a jacket w no shirt
I love Johnny but I do feel like the New Edition Name should belong to all of them including Bobby
That's literally what he said. They are on tour NOW as New Edition so they have worked it out.
It does look it up
@AirunDevon not at 1st. Johnny and ralph tried to steal it
@@columbusohio72nope
Sometimes you guys don't listen. That's not what he said. @@columbusohio72
Johnny been around since 88, and put his time in…..too took New Edition to another level, and him joining them took his career to another level.
lol
Hopefully everyone is protected!!! I Believe The Jacksons were never acknowledged Bet Awards, Soul Train, Nor American Music Awards... Sad including all of past groups...
Bob got his individual respect
once he explained it that way, that's the realest thing to do. Gotta respect it. plus, i know why it was him and Ralph. And not another member of the group it makes perfect sense
Who cares if Johnny was a founding member or not?! Clearly he was smart enough to buy it!
It matters so many care
Never do that without everyone on board. Axle Rose did that and it was awful as well. Never works out.
After the mini series they had so much momentum, new fans and hype. You trademarking the name killed all that momentum.
I think you may not understand trademark laws.
It was way before the miniseries for me that hurt the momentum, tong between heartbreak and home again for a group album.
Well Done. Clean Hearted Minds will always Win. Big up Yuself GOATS
I disagree, JG isn’t a step brother. Technically he was with NE longer than Bobby. I met Ronnie last year and I had the chance to tell him how happy I am to see all 6 together and getting along.
They were New Edition before Johnny joined so how is he in charge of who owns the name?
Shittt the way Johnny explained it if mike being the original savvy one did that from the beginning before bobby left smh lmfao
Somebody had to do it! Lol 😂❤ might as well be you...BD💎
The Jackson’s don’t even own J5 that’s why there names The Jacksons now.
Is Johnny out yet? 🌈
I remember David Ruffin and the Temptations 😂😂
Now this the type of messy I like.
I'm confused on why he would buy the trademark name of the group he wasn't even a original member of
Its just good business if you ask me.
I thought I’d never hear the details of this story. Charlamagne asked RBRM but they didn’t speak too much on it.
Just sing Jonhny. 🤣🤣🤣
Well spoken
He’s saying RBRM, but Johnny is saying you don’t want to have Ronnie and five other guys calling themselves New Edition. Keep up! 😅
Thank you Vlad🎉
He even has sn eloquent speaking voice wow
Ralph and Johnny has been showing favoritism to each other for a while now It used To Be Bobby and Ralph But Now It’s Ralph and Johnny….
@@a-m3248they fell out because Bobby tried to holler at Ralph’s daughter in a sexual way. That’s what Ralph said started the fall out with them.
@@barryscott3458 Did Ralph confirm? that I heard Bobby’s Nephew say it that’s it tho
@@jaygotbandz1you know NE never let out their dirty laundry. So that will never be confirmed. But it explains why that your stopped in 2017 and I tend to believe Bobby’s nephew because it hasn’t been refuted by the group.
Man that's not Johnny Gill that's Ray Charles 😂
Whatever happened to the Bell Biv DeVoe biopic?
Johnny is not even an original member so him buying the trademark is a NO for me. I understand Ralph who has been the lead man the entire duration. Johnny can have several seats. The only reason Johnny kept coming back to NE was because his solo career peaked quickly and he needed to pay the bills. Had he had Gerald Levert or Keith Sweat type success he would have left NE and LSG in the dust.
I agree
It doesn't matter if he's a original member or not. It's show BUSINESS. It's 95% business and 5% show. You are entitled to your own opinion but not your own facts. When it comes down to business it doesn't matter "what you feel". The business is what it is. Whatever is on paper or NOT on paper is how this plays out. Simple as that.
He became a Member of NE because Ralph was going solo so some people of NE thought they need a new lead singer so it's not about that he needed money. Try to find the real reason why johnny became a Member instead of saying that he needed money.
Noticed he never really explained why they had to put it in his and Ralph’s name?
i can't remember who exactly but on R.B.R.M breakfast club intervew they spoke on it. Said johnny came to everyone & no one rush to hop on it except ralph. They thought it was still open since no one owned it. But they knew
But he explains this in the interview why it was in his and Ralph's name at first.
Vlad stop asking questions & answering them BE QUIET
Damn Vlad... that opening question was a bit long.
I cant imagine New Edition featuring some other dudes.
I wonder if Vlad will speak on the Eddie Murphy rumors 👀
They are close, like Duane and Will.👀
Johnny and Ralph were wrong for that period. At the time I remember them both playing the victim. Wish they would have clued in their group members about them trade marking New Edition. Glad it’s all worked out though.
Johnny giving Luther vibes. 🤷♀️
Did johnny gill sign to no limit 😂😂
He a no limit soulja he thought he told ya. lol
Mannnnn 🤣🤣🤣
Vlad talks too dayum much ...he is not a good interviewer
I don't understand why he would buy something he wasn't originally apart of
Johnny Gill was his own solo artist before New Edition! NE asked Johnny to join the group when Bobby left. They never treated Johnny right while in the group.
@@JustMe-dn9fh I know who Johnny Gill is.I didn't know they mistreated him
It's good that they secured the trademark of the name, but I don't buy the argument that a member of New Edition might go and start his own group with other singers and call it New Edition like the Temptations did. No member of New Edition would ever create a fake New Edition with a new line up of new singers that were not previously in the group. They don't have to do this because they all have solo success and can always tour as solo acts.
Man, it’s pretty much every 90’s male group out here doing that and it’s sad.
HOW DO YOU KNOW.MANY OTHER GROUPS HAVE DONE IT OVER THE YEARS.NOT JUST THE TEMPTATIONS
Y'all waited to long though
I wonder if Vlad already asked Johnny Gill talking spicy that he could whoop Oscar DeLa Hoya & Charlie Murphy checked him?
New edition was already established before. Johnny Gill Johnny Gill try to be a shot caller but Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky and Mike was already solid before Johnny got into the group and also Johnny is the newest member of New edition still he he never came up with the New edition day. He just won in a heritance to become a member of New edition. It's like a rookie or the professional basketball team. You got to carry the luggage and pay you dudes
This dude is flaming 🔥🔥🔥
"Zesty" as Italian dressing on a salad!
He sounds Zesty when he talks
Pharcyde had that issue, one person owns the right to the name fucked over other members
What about new edition years before Johnny. The replacement singer stole the group trademark..... does new edition own Johnny Gill hits before and after the group? But Johnny owns the group that sings Mr telephone man?
they all own equal pieces of the name and trademark now. including Brooke Payne.
Johnny has always will be fine af 🥰
I know I luv jonny gill mane he is one of my favorite on NE ! Is Johnny gill, Ronnie devoe and bobby brown that is my favorite in New edition but I like johnny more tho!
Switch hitter vibes...
