Johnny Gill revealed New Edition's internal struggles over him and Ralph Tresvant obtaining the rights to their band name. After his lawyer's advice to secure their band name, Gill wanted to make sure that an agreement was put in place among all members; the band name could not be used without collective permission. Gill emphasized preserving the unity, integrity, and value of the band, allowing mutual understanding to stand amid differences in individual decision-making styles. Despite hitting rough patches, Gill remarks that their shared drive to achieve a common goal kept them united. He fondly recalled his relationship with Michael Bivins, known as the main one setting the tone within the group. I’m still confused about Johnny Gill the name trademark name of New Edition my opinion that Johnny wasn’t there day one when Group signed the first contract with Marus starr here how can he get the LLC before the guys? Ronnie Ricky Mike Bobby didn’t have a say so in the LLC trademark so Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant are the only two that say so new addition namebrand
New Edition had a chance to own their name are trademark L.L.C. back in 1983 but let AMI/Jump and Shoot do it when they signed with the production company while thinking they were signed to MCA records when they sued Maurice Starr for embezzlement in court and won when they were on his record label Streetwise records.

Johnny put in his time and energy and blood into New Edition, but I never believed he should have been the one to buy the trademark. They all put in a piece of them into the group and Ralph was essentially the lead singer and the heart of New Edition, BUT Bobby was the reason why the group even existed in the first place. However, Johnny made perfect since when he said the name needs to be protected. And he does seem like he's the most rational out of all of them.
I hate that they haven't gotten their props like they should have. They were The Jackson Five of their time. BET gave them their Biopic (which was done very well. Lifetime network needs to take lesson from BET bc what in the all hell were those Aaliyah and Whitney biopics??) and their Anniversary Special. But these guys deserve more.

The problem is.. if you aren't the founding member but you have business knowledge that is helpful to the group that you are a part of - you don't go around them to utilize it, you go to them and teach them how to do it. Brotherhood isn't a 1 or 2 person business..it's an "all hands on deck" growing process 💪🏾

I love New Edition for life. Every relationship has internal issues and they battled for sure, but as brothers, they never aired out their dirty laundry before the world to hurt each other. They found a resolution and worked to resolve conflict, and I love the protection for each other.

Mike has the business sense of the group, but every once in awhile it’s good to get an alley-oop. Johnny provided that, and if wasn’t him it would be some one else. In fact Ralph co-signed and no one’s complaining. Also regardless of when Johnny joined NE, he’s a key component of NE.

It wasn’t until Johnny Gill joined the group that gave the group it’s mature sound as Young Men. I truly believe they’ve would of eventually faded out if Johnny hadn’t help with the mature sound of the group. So he just as much an original in my eyes than anyone else. He was an important part of the group as one of the Lead Singers.

Johnny, even if he was the last to join, is as much a legal member of New Edition as any other member. Therefore, he has the right to secure the copyright.
@pensiveczar2239 We'll just agree to disagree on that. New edition was a well known, established group before Johnny was asked to replace Bobby. If bobby hadn't left Johnny would have never been in the group at all so how he gone take ownership of the name?
@@robertb1275 lets keep it real here. if Johnny doesnt join NE at that junction, there may not have been an NE as we know it. Heartbreak and everything after may not even exist. Sure, if Bobby doesnt get kicked out then Johnny likely never joins, but blame Bobby for that. End of the day, Johnny was and is still a member of NE for well over 30 years. So he (and Ralph) did what the others likely werent even thinking about, to protect the group.

@nathanscipio6148 no they had to keep pushing the series back because everytime the film crew went to DC he never showed up. So he got mad when they finally wrapped and put it out.
It was way before the miniseries for me that hurt the momentum, tong between heartbreak and home again for a group album.
Interesting. A few years back when this issue was happening, Johnny said that the trademark wasn’t the real issue as to why there was beef. The trademark definitely was an issue but clearly it was something more personal that happened that stopped them from touring after the series.

I have been a fan of New Edition since Candy Girl dropped. I totally understand why Johnny followed thru with the trademark + him and Ralph are best friends. Johnny isn't only the oldest in NE; he has been in the Entertainment Industry longer and is more mature given his childhood of a 2-parent home and a strong spiritual foundation.
New Edition was marketed as a Pop Group but dem fellas was from "da hood"; no shade just the truth. The trademark move was necessary and it's a reflection of how business affairs with the New Edition brand wasn't as tight as they should've been.
They missed out on a lot of money not capitalizing off their 2017 BET Biopic with a tour. It would've been massive but too much ego got in the way & they couldn't see the bigger picture as a Brand. I would've been like when are we rehearsing for da tour cuz I'm trying to secure the bag. 🤷🏾♀️
I remember thinking the same thing (rewatched the biopic for the first time in A LONG TIME over the weekend) because you could argue that NE could've made back ALL of the money they were cheated out of by Maurice, Jump & Shoot, the Home Again Tour (they dropped the ball themselves there), etc. with a huge tour and new album. However, the movie clearly reopened wounds and whatnot. I know it's rough, but they should've fought through that pain and made that BANK!

There are so, so many examples of music groups from all genres who are or have been in this situation-a former member starts a new version of the group -Temptations, Klymaxx, The Beach Boys, Funkadelic to name a few, so this is more common than people think.

This was a great idea b/c each member could have essentially used the name and there would have been 6 splinter New Edition groups, which lessens and waters down the brand and makes them less attractive to promoters, which cuts into their earning potential.

You’re right, Ralph and Bobby were real close. But they had a falling out some years ago and Ralph wasn’t speaking to him for years and this was all during the trademark situation. They’re cool now but I don’t know if they’ll ever go back to being that close again.

There's only one New Edition member who can say they've consistently had a successful music career outside of the group and it's not any of the original five lol. NE is their bread and butter. I’m from Brazil and grew up listening to New Edition but I’m in total shock in learning after decades in the Business, no member ever thought about Trademark the group name ? I mean, they formed in 1978 and Brooke Payne gave them the name, why didn’t he Trademark it then ?
And to think this came about right when their Biopic was about to be released and the plan was to drop a album and tour right after the biopic only for them to go to war with each other instead over this trademark 😲😳 man oh man, if anyone were to ask me to name an example of a fumbled bag, this right here would be it.
They attracted new and old fans from that biopic and could’ve capitalized on it big time, they truly raised their stock with that biopic, I don’t think they could ever reach that high of hot topic like they generated after that biopic release.

I’m glad it all sorted out but it feels like it was forced to be sorted out because the other four were going to bring it to court.

It's good that they secured the trademark of the name, but I don't buy the argument that a member of New Edition might go and start his own group with other singers and call it New Edition like the Temptations did. No member of New Edition would ever create a fake New Edition with a new line up of new singers that were not previously in the group. They don't have to do this because they all have solo success and can always tour as solo acts.
Man, it’s pretty much every 90’s male group out here doing that and it’s sad.

I hear your point but look at the Temptations. David Ruffin, Eddie Kendrick, and Dennis Edwards all had successful solo careers but got other singers and toured as the Temptations until Otis Williams successfully won in court to prevent this from happening. Because of the egos involved I could see members of New Edition doing the same thing.

Sheeeeit technically Bobby, Ronnie, Mike and Ricky (RBRM) did just that 😂 they may not have called it New Edition but they basically created a separate group (out of spite) excluding Johnny and Ralph.
They haven’t got their just due because y’all keep getting in your own way. Y’all fumbled a huge bag by not doing an album or tour right after the movie.
But they made up for it with their recent tour so its all good
