The first two players you met were definitely different people. You can tell which generation/completion level someone is on by the markings on their robes. :)
Fun Fact Dan, Based on the pattern on the other guys robes, Rex played through Journey 3 times previously. You weren't protecting him, H e was protecting you!!!
Imagine playing Journey on your first or second playthrough, you meet someone who hasn't beaten the game before, and you guide them through the game. Taking in everything all over again. It's beautiful, just like your first playthrough. You make it to the end. This person writes in the snow "Hi" and you, in response, "Hello". You both write the word "friend". The credits roll. You learn the names of those you had met. You just became friends with RTGame.
We all need to appreciate how RT is usually a completionist, and was going for completion, but then he made a friend and decided they were more important.
My fondest memory of this game was back in 2020; I've played Journey enough that I'm pretty sure I have full cape markings and am a certified White Wayfarer, but at the time I hadn't picked it up in a couple years. Feeling down one night I booted the game up for some comfort, it was nearly midnight my time and the hype around Journey had long since died down, so I wasn't really expecting anyone to be playing, but then the corner of my screen lit up, and another White Wayfarer ran over to me. I almost never run into White Wayfarers, I think the game tries to pair you with a Red if you're wearing White, so this was already a unique experience. We spent our whole playtime together, waiting for each other when one of us got ahead, chirping our little wordless conversations, admiring views and trying to fall over on purpose for fun. When we reached the end I got to the top first, wanting to show my appreciation I started tracing a heart in the snow...and they finished the other side. I legit teared up at that, such a simple thing but so meaningful for me. The credits rolled and their username popped up so I screenshot it right away, fully intending on sending them a message to tell them they made my night, but just like with the heart in the snow we shared the feeling, and they messaged me first, thanking me for the amazing journey we shared. We talked briefly, turns out they were just as surprised as me that anyone was playing at the time, they also decided to play on a whim, and then they dropped a bombshell on me; they had just got out of the hospital. I don't believe in fate, but that felt like the wheels turned and joined two complete strangers together at a time they both sorely needed it
The game is truly melodic. The sounds are the same timbre, but their pitch changes depending on where the background music has reached. It really is soothing.
The online component of Journey is a magical thing. There is no clout, no gamertags, no toxicity. Only a single beautiful melody to use for very limited communication.
Also the fact that you are able to complete your journey alone but it becomes so much easier with someone as you can literally lift each other up to get over obstacles. And the fact that this journey is ultimately yours, you can meet others, you can stick with them and they can stick with you, but you aren't forced to do that, because everyone expiriences it at their own pace and you can meet new people and you can loose them and find them again or find new ones, but in the end you will eventaully all meet again at the end.
I love games with limited or simple player communication. Things like looking back and forth at something that just happened or subtle nods is really fun.
There's something soul-movingly beautiful about them going through this whole journey together, not a word said, and right at the end they sketch out the only thing that will stay visible in the snow long enough to be understood: "Hi"
One of my favourite memories of this game is of a VERY patient white robe showing me all the cool out of bounds areas, leading me through step by step with just chirps and coming to rescue me when I messed up. Eventually we just sat down and looked out over the strange world you weren't meant to see. This will always be my favourite game. Glad for anyone to have the chance to enjoy it.
@@H.J.Fleischmannsky cotl has a similar progression with new players guided by veterans, and it’s very active. i’ve played for 5 years but honestly you could just ‘beat’ the base game once and have a unique experience
So thats what that was!! LMAOO About halfway through the video I was thinking "wonder if that person later finds out they were playing with RT, or maybe theyre even actually watching the stream"😂
Dan will be happy to know that the "getting naked to save heat when stranded in the cold" is a thing, but *Only* when your clothes are wet (like you fell in a river). I do want to stress that if you do this, you are intentionally putting yourself in a Bad situation in order to avoid a Worse one; you *need* to find shelter & a heat source quickly!
I was gonna say; it's also only if you have an alternative source of dry warmth, like blankets, shelter and fire, but wet clothes are gonna be better absolutely nothing. You can't just go out bare arsed into a blizzard 😂
@@rexana_rexana no wet clothes are way worse than nothing in this instance. if you have winter cloths that get water logged the water runs past all the materials and onto your skin sucking your heat away very quickly. i mean their is a reason we use water cooling on a lot of stuff its pretty good are leeching heat.
@@madmanwithaplan1826it actually depends what your clothes are made of. Wet cotton is bad, wet wool is better than nothing. Idk bout the synthetic threads.
Holy that was some whiplash. Just read through a bunch of wholesome comments about other people's experience with this game, only to get blindsided by "getting naked to save heat".
I love the fact that you can tell how many times someone has been through the game by the amount of detail on the poncho. A bigger design means they've completed the journey a few times, so knowing that second Friend was experienced is fun
Another more hidden way to know if they're an experienced player is if they trip. No, really - there's a hidden mechanic for tripping (wiggling left-right repeatedly fast), which causes the Traveller to faceplant. It's sometimes used by players to check how much someone knows of the game without words, if they trip back and you're both just lying face first in the sand. 😂
I remember doing a run of this in probably 2017 or 2018, I had met a random person in the desert, and then me and them went to the mountain together, always staying together as much as possible, almost never leaving the other's side. We made it so far, and then when those big beasts showed up at the mountain top, he was unfortunately lost to the beasts while I managed to escape.. The game graced the ending with showing two lights in the sky. He made it with me, even if we weren't visually together. I loved it.
fun fact the violin at the end, to composer told the violinist to play in a way that would make angels cry. Apotheosis, the name of the track played during the climb up the mountain always moves me to tears because that song is so beautiful. God i love this game.
It's also a good example of I think incremental music design it's called where various parts of a single track are used for different situations in a kind of organic way. Apotheosis has faster and slower, almost serene parts and they all fit the parts of the level you're in very well even if you should decide to take it super slow.
@@Lenariet I really love this game, I bout it 3 times PS3, 4 & 5. I have the complete OST on my Spotify, and I follow the composer on youtube. This game and its soundtrack is everything and i will die on this hill.
You can tell he met a different guy than the bridge person who fell off because the second one hand more yellow markings on the lower half of their cloak, which you get from discovering the murals scattered about. Given how many they had, I’d reckon they’ve played this game at least once or twice.
@OddLeah Each time you finish the game new markings are made on the cloak until you have completed it three times when you get the final cloak which has the largest number of markings. The first person RT met had completed the game only once while the second I believe had completed it twice and hence had a more elaborate cloak than the first.
i remember playing this years ago, never knowing the name or face of the person who joined me along the way, but feeling very connected to them by the end
The short duration that writing would stay in the snow is, perhaps, what lead to the custom of drawing the simplest and most direct image to convey your appreciation and friendship for one another. A Heart
I'd honestly love to see you play more games along the silent journey type of games, they're usually so great to explore and visually stunning, they're one of my favorite smaller genre's every time I see a game like it
For those not aware: Beating the game increases the amount of yellow patterns on the bottom of your robe per game clear, and finding all the scarf length upgrades (in a single playthrough, I think?) gives you a white robe. It's a really neat way to encourage replayability and thus encourage people to be "teachers" for newer players, showing them the locations of collectibles and murals and such
I'm surprised he had never played it before. He's the first player I've seen recognize the other players to not be npcs, also the first I've seen leave them behind.
An interesting fact I haven't seen others point out here is that throughout your journey you will see shooting stars appear from the mountain. These only appear when someone completes the game so when you see one, you are witnessing another player summiting the mountain and passing back to the beginning. That detail is just really cool to me.
@@KissedByFire16 iirc they're technically called calls, but the devs and community refer to journey's call as chirps the spritual successor, sky, often has it's calls referred to as honks! :3
Journey is a very special game. The fact that people still play it to this day, and you can and do still come across companions even now, twelve years since its initial release, is a testament to that. Fun fact - The credits song, I Was Born For This, has lyrics comprised entirely of literary passages and a quote attributed to Joan of Arc: Stat Sua cuique dies - To each his day is given Maél is mé tó féran - 'Tis time I fare from you ὤλετο μέν μοι νόστος - Lost is my homecoming C’est pour cela que je suis née - I was born for this この道や 行く人なしに, この道や 秋のくれ - Along this road goes no one, along this road this autumn eve Ne me plaignez pas, C'est pour cela que he suis née - Do not pity me, I was born for this
For people also curious about the music, it's Austin Wintory! He's a stellar composer who worked on games like Abzû and also featured in Supergiant Games' Hades, where he helped out with On The Coast/In The Blood.
Austin Wintory also has his own TH-cam channel where he breaks down how he composed certain songs, posts music sheets if you want to learn how to play them, and even interviews/reacts to the works of other VGM/BGM musicians! Channel name is the same as his, I recommend checking it out
@@SergeantStark In relation to the Hades one, there was also a video on Supergiant's channel of him recording On The Coast and In The Blood that shows him conducting and talking about the creative process!
@@sparkcircuit7029 He's such a cool composer, chill to listen to and gives lots of insight and advice. Even if you aren't a musician yourself tuning into his commentary and such is just really nice to listen to
Journey came out a couple of weeks after my grandmother passed away. The ending hit me like a train and it holds a special place in my heart for helping me then. Thanks RT for playing.
A lot of the mechanics in this game were reused and expanded upon in ThatGameCompany's later game, Sky: Children of the Light, which is an online multiplayer game.
@youtubeuniversity3638 more, you discover lots of emotes, and its up to the player if they wish to unlock chat with that person/sit at a bench with them
There's a Polygon video called "why journeys last song was the hardest to compose" or something close enough to that to come up in a search. It had some neat insights from the composer, Austin Wintory, and I recommend checking it our for anyone curious about how they made such a perfect finale.
journey is such a melancholy game alone, but it completely changes when you stumble upon another player. ESPECIALLY during the snow segment, i genuinly felt fear for my friend.
Fun Fact: Before development for PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale's DLC was cut, they were developing a stage based on Gravity Rush which would have crossed over with Journey. The developers really loved the stage and were disappointed that fans didn't get the chance to play on it.
as someone whos played sky children of the light for years, its incredible to see just how many Moments were taken straight from journey, like the race down the city or the hidden dark passage
One of my favourite things about this game, is how it only tells you the name of the other players at the end of the playthrough. I remember once beating the game, with the same companion from beginning to end (which also gives you an achievement), and chatting with the player about the playthrough afterwards, through the PSN-messages. Very fun experience!
One of the coolest companions I journeyed with took me on an out of bounds exploration. To see all the secrets underneath the surface is truly a breathtaking experience, and after we completed our Journey the guy messaged me all the screenshots they took while out of bounds. Who knew that the guts of a game could be beautiful too?
I really like how well things are communicated in this game.. In such a simple and unobtrusive way. - The amount of markings on the traveller's cloak shows how many times someone has completed the game. - The different runes show a different speaking style, or more or less experience. (More experienced players have more complex song symbols) - The white cloak shows advanced knowledge of the game, as it's unlocked after you find every scarf fragment. But from a lore perspective it suggests maturing. I assume the society used to give children red cloaks until they matured to adulthood and were given a white one. Obviously though, they saw the error of their ways and realised even they made mistakes, so after society destroyed the world they decided to let it all stop after the fighting, and instead focus on helping their children to start a new society where they don't abuse the scarfs, but instead work with them in harmony. (Often literally through (for example) the use of song to refresh your scarf and also activate dormant scarfs in the environment) - The scarf length is a really intuitive way to see people's agility, and the fact that renewing it combines with the speech system (meaning you only really need two buttons for the game) lends it a beautiful simplicity you just can't get with games less artful, it's just focused solely on being an experience. And that's perfect. - This is all delivered, story and experience, with nothing but music and environmental sounds. Simply incredible for its time. Thank you devs. We need more games like Journey.. ❤
This game awoke me to video games as an art, a means to create poetry. I was like 10 when i played it, didn't play anything apart from FPS games like BF3 and CoD at the time. Let me tell you that was a big awakening lmao
The first time I played this game, I was met with a random what I thought was NPC but later learned was a player character, and they helped me the entire way with nonverbal communication and it was one of the most beautiful experiences I've ever had.
I remember booting this game up at 11pm not knowing anything about it. I ended up meeting a guy along the way right before I planned on quitting for the night. I didn't want to leave him alone so ended up playing to nearly 3am even though I had work in the morning. Thanks for the game Ken!
I realized half way through that I was mimicking the music and sounds, whistling calls to the responses of Friend and RT as well as the music. It felt natural to engage on that level and engross myself in the experience along side. Thank you for playing, I now also have a game I wish to play sooner.
Sometimes making a friend is far more important than complete success - that’s what makes you fully fulfilled and complete. I guess that sums up the journey of life. It’s never really about the destination- it’s about our journeys
This is one of the first "timeless masterpiece" games that I have actually experienced as a kid. My brother and I would watch my dad play it on the tv. I cleaned out his room while listening to this, very sentimental.
I have always wanted to play this game!!! I am glad I can watch it through you RT! I play Sky: The Children of Light everyday so I feel a connection to Journey after watching the talk about it in SkyFest!
Honestly, despite being from the same developers, I really didn't like Sky: Children of Light. Yes the game still had a new story which was intriguing and the grand finale was absolutely amazing, feeling like a fight for your life desperately trying to free the memories (or whayever they are) trapped by the corruption as you slowly succumb to it yourself, but i just found the journey along the way a little more annoying mainly in the social aspect. Along my personal journey, i saw many players with cool avatar items, but my own pool of them was very limited, thus i thought "Say, maybe i can get those once i complete the game!" I was right, but very wrong at the same time. As you needed to grind EVERY DAY in order to get certain items efficiently specifically in the constellations system, the only items slightly readily available was the event items, which included some grindy tasks in order to complete (not without a semi-decent story thoug, making it worthwhile) afterwards i just stopped playing out of boredom
@@sundermc I completely understand that! I did go times of not playing the game myself, only picked it back up for the end of the Season of Nesting then into SkyFest and Season of Duets. I'm keeping up with the dallies some sense it's had events that kept me wantin stuff. It's not for everyone though and thats perfectly fine, it's more importaint to play things that make you happy! ^-^
I played this game back in the PS3 era... And to me, I got one or two people for the first levels, but once I got into the depths, I was alone for the rest of the game. There are a lot of theories about what this game is, but some people believe it's a metaphor for life itself and the message to me was very clear if I go through these lenses: "You'll find others in your life, but in the end, you're on your own". I love that this playthrough that I watched was different, because RT had someone with him until the end and experienced all of it with another person. That made the message very different from the message I've got when I first played it. Edit: Now, play Persona 3 Reload, RT. So you can know who Aigis is and cry about the phrase for her in Astrobot.
"How could RT be a gremlin in Journey, of all games?" I wondered as I clicked the thumbnail. Journey is an incredible experience. One of the most memorable I've played. It was wild back in the original release period when it had loads of players, you had a companion every time and there was some confusion about how the social mechanic worked. I got my white robe again once I got the game on Steam just so I could guide other players.
I absolutely love the little chirps in this game. No words, no distinct meaning, and yet people can convey so much. Like how in the scene at 24:45, Friend's chirps straight up convey a "Don't worry, I'm Ok!". And at 42:20, that little tune they made together really gave off a "We did it, friend." "We did" vibe. ❤
I just want to say I played through this game on stream. I decided not to speak throughout the entire game instead using a notepad to communicate important notes when I felt it was necessary and instead engaging in trying to communicate with the people who showed up through non-verbal communication. I met some incredibly kind and friendly people and had some amazing moments but the most touching thing came at the end when at least 3 people spoke up thanking me for playing with them one even mentioned one of the other chatters by name showing that this was something they did regularly.. They'd never spoken in my chat before but if you're reading this thank you again so much for going out there and making the experience for us first timers incredible. They drew a big smily face for me in the sand at the end and I was in fact crying. Journey is in fact a timeless masterpiece.
Journey is such a masterpiece, and seeing RT play it feels like revisiting an old friend. I stumbled upon it on a random Saturday while browsing the PS4 store, not knowing the impact it would have. The way it allowed me to connect with complete strangers and make friends along the way, without a single word, was a beautiful and unexpected experience. The mysterious, awe-inspiring world and story left me feeling so moved. It’s truly a work of art, and I’m so glad to see others discovering or revisiting it.
Watching older games like this can go two ways: it's either a great solo adventure or you stumble across someone else playing it and it becomes a different experience. I'm always glad when it's the latter for this game.
Theres a diffrent game by the same people called sky: children of the light! Its on playstation, mobile devices and pc! Highly reccomend playing it if you really loved this one
@@MusicComet the revival questline is basically the "main story" (TGC gone and made the same game twice, lol). After that, you can (and, honestly, should) close the game and get off the bullshit live service grind FOMO drip feed treadmill.
yes but they do share a L O T of simularitys. Like the honk mechanic, the rebirth, the wing/cape collecting Just sky has a lot more content and expanded apon I just think itd be fun seeing him check it out if he liked journey /:-)
I recently replayed Journey, it is such a great cinematic gaming experience to share with friends. The music for the Finale is named Apotheosis, infer from that what you will for the ending meaning.
Trivia: there's an index of the symbols of other players you meet. It shows the symbols of every player you met at the end of each playthrough after the credits, iirc.
I didn't even know this game was multiplayer.... I beat the game solo and didn't see another soul. I thought the game was designed to feel lonely. Now i want to replay it to see how different the experience is!
There is actually a trophie for playing the game all the way through with the same person. I havent gotten that one yet as it seems every time i think its gonna happen, they either quit playing or loose connection. The most people i played with is one session is like 3 or 4. Defiantly fun to replay, if not for the journey alone.
This is a stunning game. I usually put on these videos as I work on other things but especially towards the end I was as captivated as the first time I played it. The music, the art, the silent friendship that builds is all incredible
To this day, this is the only game in my top 10 that I can’t fully explain. There’s lore, yeah, but in game it is interpretive. There’s story and struggle, but no words to describe it. There is friendship and teamwork, but I will never know anything about who they are, not even their names. The journey has an end, but always creates a new beginning. There is music and emotion and something just so atmospherically perfect… I’m so glad RT got to experience it, and that being live didn’t ruin the experience he had.
I found this beautiful comment on a 12 yr old Journey video: "What exactly do you do in Journey, like what's it about?" "Well, your character starts out in a desert and tries to get to a mountain, and then you find God." "So your character is just trying to find god?" "No. Your character is trying to get to the top of the mountain. You are the one who finds God." I may not have found God, but I found something that touched my soul more than I could ever have hoped for, or expected from, a video game.
Those last few moments on the mountain writing Hi in the snow melted my heart, thatgamecompany really knows how to make you truly feel connected with another person
I'm so glad he got to experience this game with a friend. There's a truly special connection you form with someone you can't communicate with other thank a little chirp and playfully floating around each other. No other game has captured that exact feeling of connection. It's truly one of a kind.
Flower was the very first game i played by That Game Company. I love the way they view games and I wish more games were like that. Sky is a great game, but it makes me wish i was playing Journey. That is hands down their best game.
The same company made a free to play cross console game called Sky: Children of Light. It hits a lot of the same vibes as Journey, but they encourage more player interaction by introducing emotes, friending, text chat (In limited areas or just with a person on your friends list), character customization, and upping the players per area from 2 to 8. It doesn't exactly have the same amount of gravitas to it because of all the additional player interactions, but it's very pretty and incredibly charming. And they're still doing updates so new areas get added frequently. My one main critique is that it uses FOMO with the customization options to get people to play more frequently. But if you don't care about character customization then that's not much of a problem.
I played Journey for the first time after seeing RT posted a video about it. Truly a beautiful game. Only about an hour of time, but I cared so much about my new friend I played with :] I’m hoping to play again sometime soon to see what else there is to discover!
This video was genuinely such a treat, I love human connection. :) Two people who can’t talk to and don’t know one another enduring hardships together and learning together is so sweet.
i used to play this game over and over again when i was a kid with my ps3. i'd eventualy got a white cloak for finding all the glyphs and i was guiding ppl to them as well as other secrets. there was a funny meta layer to this mechanic of ppl learning more about the game and then passing the knowlege on newer players, bcs once i did know all the official secrets i started meeting players who would teach me how to find OOBs. I still remember one journey when we went thru the entirely last level entirely OOB it was so surreal and completely unique since i was never able to do the same oob myself this game manages to be magical even when broken it makes me so happy to see there are new ppl still playing this game enough that RT was able to meet some. journey online is competely different experience than solo
The very first time I played this game, I was about to cross the bridge when I saw the side of my screen light up. When I turned, I saw a white and gold cloaked figure. I was confused and surprised because I had thought the game was a single player game, so seeing another person was a bit of a shock. I didn't know what to do, but they ran a circle around me and started going back down the bridge. I followed, and they led me to some secrets I hadn't found yet. The runes that make your scarf longer, and some murals for lore. That one person made the trek with me, and led me through the whole game... Letting me take the lead and experience it at my pace and explore when I wanted, but getting my attention and showing me every bit I didn't find on my own. To this day it is one of the only games that has ever made me cry. ...Reaching the summit with my friend and mentor was something so beautiful, and has stuck with me so long that just hearing Apotheosis makes my eyes well with tears all over again. It isn't a game it's an experience, and I know that sounds corny but it is genuinely such a special experience. My friend had an elaborate cloak most likely as much detail as it could have, and though I will never reach that level of experience, I wear my white cloak with a fond pride. :)
My experience of this game consists of. -going to the towers thingy -spotting another guy who looked like me -I touched him and my scarf got maxed out -I just kept going up and then the game ended - me going “the fuck just happened?”
Here in 5:05, no one chooses to honk for the beef. It’s better to be safe and do the one blonk honk for the chicken rather than risk your entire life for just half a honker bar more.
This video inspired me to boot up Journey again, I was in the last chapter, not expecting anyone to be playing in the morning when another person appeared and the last achievement i needed, to travel with 10 unique players showed up. Completing the ascension in my white cloak, knowing id perfected the game was moving in the same way it had been the first time i played :)
I remember aimlessly exploring the first time I played Journey, looking for every little secret. I got so attached to the companions I met along the way - the experience of communicating without words, helping each other navigate the world, getting worried when I thought they’d disconnected or fallen behind - it was all so touching and surprisingly emotional. Huge thanks to RT for the wonderful showcase of a truly timeless game.
I'm so strangely emotional right now/ I've never seen any content of this game, or even heard of it before. But wow, what a journey to take, and with another person.. Not able to talk, but your form of communication sounding like music when you sing together. I hope whoever was the Friend we met here has an amazing day, or perhaps even comes across this video and feels all the love we have to give them
RT should play Abzû next. It was made by some of the people involved in Journey after they left thatgamecompany. It doesn't have the multiplayer component, but it's soundtrack is great and environmental story is engaging.
I had heard that there were other players you could meet in journey who could possibly help you. But I did not realize how amazing that concept was before seeing this and I'm sure it would be amazing to experience personally too. It felt good to have a friend with us (almost) the whole journey.
I watched Stampy play this game way, way back. It always left an impression on me, despite not knowing the name of the game. This has pushed me to purchase the game for myself!
31:00 you should take off clothes if they are wet, then attempt to dry the person off, but be careful about friction, like try to pat them dry instead of rubbing them with a towel. Same with warming them up, dont induce heat through friction as it can damage skin if the hypothermia has progressed enough. Also dont give them a hot beverage, instead just a warm one and have them sip, not drink, it
If you like Journey I highly recommend Abzu It is just as pretty and ethereal feeling as Journey but it's a deep sea world you get to explore wonderful sound design, amazing visuals and the gameplay is just as fun imo
I really loved playing this game, just such a good experience. Thanks to everyone who recommended me to play it through my Discord server!
I wonder if we'll ever find out who it was that played with you
The fact you open with, “hey, I know this guy from Astro bot” is one of the most jarring cuts from the serene landscape of the intro.
@arkane1732 it tells you at the end of the credits the username of everyone who you encountered throughout your journey
now i kinda wanna see you play sky
The first two players you met were definitely different people. You can tell which generation/completion level someone is on by the markings on their robes. :)
Fun Fact Dan,
Based on the pattern on the other guys robes, Rex played through Journey 3 times previously.
You weren't protecting him, H e was protecting you!!!
That's what I thought 😆 but love that idea of evrytime you play you get another pattern. Though only 3 times.
@@edenmairay60 there 4 patterns total as far as I'm aware, rex had the 3rd, theres 1 their high which I guess this run got him apon completion.
too bad Rex kind off strong-armed RT into basically skipping half the levels every now and then.
You have decapitated Shia LaBeouf
I think you can see them write out “Hi RT,” not “hello.” There’s a chance they knew exactly who they were playing with.

There's always playthrough 2 or 3 or 4 to complete the collection and unlock the white robe
I've noticed that RT is a really good friend! I've seen his collabs with people and everyone loves him!
maybe the collectibles were the friends we made along the way
also rex clearly played the game a few times
the real completionist run was the friend we made along the way
My fondest memory of this game was back in 2020; I've played Journey enough that I'm pretty sure I have full cape markings and am a certified White Wayfarer, but at the time I hadn't picked it up in a couple years.
I don't believe in fate, but that felt like the wheels turned and joined two complete strangers together at a time they both sorely needed it
That’s awesome!
This is why simple games are the best.
The people are the halves of the heart
Do it
Thank you for sharing, that’s absolutely beautiful and I wholeheartedly believe that you should reach out to them again
This is the sign that you should reach out to them 😊
I love how friend is pretty talkative, trying to communicate a lot or chatty. And then RT is more quiet but likes to do BIG honks to communicate.
It's adorable how different people communicate with the chirps differently
The game is truly melodic. The sounds are the same timbre, but their pitch changes depending on where the background music has reached. It really is soothing.
The online component of Journey is a magical thing. There is no clout, no gamertags, no toxicity. Only a single beautiful melody to use for very limited communication.
I like how the few games I know of that have multiplayer with little to no communication, are so peaceful. Really makes you think!
It was a fantastic experience for me, until I finished it and saw that the person I'd bonded with the entire time had a gamertag of like Ballsdeep69
It's cool
There's something soul-movingly beautiful about them going through this whole journey together, not a word said, and right at the end they sketch out the only thing that will stay visible in the snow long enough to be understood: "Hi"
One of my favourite memories of this game is of a VERY patient white robe showing me all the cool out of bounds areas, leading me through step by step with just chirps and coming to rescue me when I messed up. Eventually we just sat down and looked out over the strange world you weren't meant to see. This will always be my favourite game. Glad for anyone to have the chance to enjoy it.
I wish I could have seen that myself. I will probably get this game one day, but I am not sure how many people will still be playing it.

41:30 love rt being oblivious to Friend writing “HI RT” lmao
So thats what that was!! LMAOO
About halfway through the video I was thinking "wonder if that person later finds out they were playing with RT, or maybe theyre even actually watching the stream"😂
something about the two of them finding a way to say hello at the very end got me very emotional
That part made me cry. Being able to kind of talk with the person you journied with was MAGICAL
I love that Rex wrote "Hi RT" and Dan didn't notice
Another thing I've seen is one person drawing half a heart and the other completing it.
You can't just go out bare arsed into a blizzard 😂
i feel like he got the skin to skin thing from childbirth??
I thought it was number of murals discovered
Another more hidden way to know if they're an experienced player is if they trip. No, really - there's a hidden mechanic for tripping (wiggling left-right repeatedly fast), which causes the Traveller to faceplant. It's sometimes used by players to check how much someone knows of the game without words, if they trip back and you're both just lying face first in the sand. 😂
@@sparkcircuit7029didn’t know that!! I’ll have to check it out :)
I loved it.
Wait, what? What's your steam name. I had the same experience around that same time, except _I_ got lost to the beast
Fated meeting?
Did fate pit them together again find out next time on Journey ball Z
Holy shit
Had a very similar experience, I love this game.
fun fact the violin at the end, to composer told the violinist to play in a way that would make angels cry. Apotheosis, the name of the track played during the climb up the mountain always moves me to tears because that song is so beautiful. God i love this game.
yeah I definitely cried at the end
It's also a good example of I think
incremental music design it's called where various parts of a single track are used for different situations in a kind of organic way.
This game and its soundtrack is everything and i will die on this hill.
that means you're an Angel!!
Cello! Just played super high :)
You can tell he met a different guy than the bridge person who fell off because the second one hand more yellow markings on the lower half of their cloak, which you get from discovering the murals scattered about. Given how many they had, I’d reckon they’ve played this game at least once or twice.
They have different runes when they use voice, that’s the easiest way to tell
@@petrwarthursty2011do the runes indicate anything, or are they just random?
@@OddLeah you are assigned a random rune every time you are reborn (new game)
@OddLeah Each time you finish the game new markings are made on the cloak until you have completed it three times when you get the final cloak which has the largest number of markings. The first person RT met had completed the game only once while the second I believe had completed it twice and hence had a more elaborate cloak than the first.
There is also a white cloak which you obtain by finding every power up
On the off-chance nobody's mentioned it, the flower is a reference to their previous game; Flower. Also an absolute experience.
You can also find another reference in the Tower level to Flow! Once the Tower is flooded enough, head down to one of the lower levels again. 💙

i remember playing this years ago, never knowing the name or face of the person who joined me along the way, but feeling very connected to them by the end
I was playing one time, years ago, with a friend and made ut to the caverns when one of my younger cousins unplugged the power cord, accidentally.
The short duration that writing would stay in the snow is, perhaps, what lead to the custom of drawing the simplest and most direct image to convey your appreciation and friendship for one another.
A Heart
Yeah its so cute when I see in playthroughs, people drawing hearts in the snow to show their appreciation after the journey
I wish Dan had seen where it said "Hi RT"
I'd honestly love to see you play more games along the silent journey type of games, they're usually so great to explore and visually stunning, they're one of my favorite smaller genre's every time I see a game like it
Do you know any similar games that you would recommend?
Abzul and Scanner somber are the first that come to my mind
@snownykatie66 I feel like "Sky: Children of the Light" would fall under this category. It's free, and was made by the same team that made Journey!
Rime is also great!
@windy_2002 ooo, I loved Rime! Such a cute game! Definitely recommend!
For those not aware: Beating the game increases the amount of yellow patterns on the bottom of your robe per game clear, and finding all the scarf length upgrades (in a single playthrough, I think?) gives you a white robe. It's a really neat way to encourage replayability and thus encourage people to be "teachers" for newer players, showing them the locations of collectibles and murals and such
Correct, other than getting all in one play through. Once a symbol is found it appears on the symbol map in chapter select (starting area). :)
I'm surprised he had never played it before.
He's the first player I've seen recognize the other players to not be npcs, also the first I've seen leave them behind.

The real Journey in this game is quite literally the friends we made along the way… and also for that £3 Tesco Sandwich Meal Deal

An interesting fact I haven't seen others point out here is that throughout your journey you will see shooting stars appear from the mountain. These only appear when someone completes the game so when you see one, you are witnessing another player summiting the mountain and passing back to the beginning. That detail is just really cool to me.
3:21 if i remember the "honk" is called chirp by the creators, fitting name either way
i only knew it as "honk", i assume it's a fanbase coined term
@@KissedByFire16 iirc they're technically called calls, but the devs and community refer to journey's call as chirps
the spritual successor, sky, often has it's calls referred to as honks! :3
Journey is a very special game. The fact that people still play it to this day, and you can and do still come across companions even now, twelve years since its initial release, is a testament to that.
Fun fact - The credits song, I Was Born For This, has lyrics comprised entirely of literary passages and a quote attributed to Joan of Arc:
Stat Sua cuique dies - To each his day is given
Maél is mé tó féran - 'Tis time I fare from you
ὤλετο μέν μοι νόστος - Lost is my homecoming
C’est pour cela que je suis née - I was born for this
この道や 行く人なしに, この道や 秋のくれ - Along this road goes no one, along this road this autumn eve
Ne me plaignez pas, C'est pour cela que he suis née - Do not pity me, I was born for this
For people also curious about the music, it's Austin Wintory! He's a stellar composer who worked on games like Abzû and also featured in Supergiant Games' Hades, where he helped out with On The Coast/In The Blood.
I love Abzû! I knew the music sounded similar
He also released an album called Traveller: A Journey Symphony for the 10 year anniversary of Journey. I highly recommend it
Austin Wintory also has his own TH-cam channel where he breaks down how he composed certain songs, posts music sheets if you want to learn how to play them, and even interviews/reacts to the works of other VGM/BGM musicians! Channel name is the same as his, I recommend checking it out
@@SergeantStark In relation to the Hades one, there was also a video on Supergiant's channel of him recording On The Coast and In The Blood that shows him conducting and talking about the creative process!

Maybe the only game RT has played where the term "Timeless Masterpiece" can be applied unironically. Phenomenal game through and through.
I think Outer Wilds has also earned that title.
Bioshock infinite does too
Journey came out a couple of weeks after my grandmother passed away. The ending hit me like a train and it holds a special place in my heart for helping me then. Thanks RT for playing.
A lot of the mechanics in this game were reused and expanded upon in ThatGameCompany's later game, Sky: Children of the Light, which is an online multiplayer game.
Does it have more or less communication capability?

Some were done better in sky, like the golden wasteland, and other were absolutely perfect in journey. It is truly gorgeous.
I've explored oob in a few games, but none come close to the beauty seen in Journey oobs. Truly stunning.
I never expected RT to play a game like this tbh, I use to play this soooo much and it's amazing to see our drift king experience this... Experience
I hope he checks out the company's other games like abzu and child of light.
@@Frogboyaidan That Game Company didn’t make Abzû, but one of the head developers of Journey did work on it.

The title doesn't mention the game being a flawless masterpiece because this speaks for itself
You misunderstand.
Journey is a Timeless Masterpiece
Minecraft Story Mode is a Flawless Masterpiece With No Flaws Whatsoever
I really like how well things are communicated in this game.. In such a simple and unobtrusive way.
- The amount of markings on the traveller's cloak shows how many times someone has completed the game.
- The different runes show a different speaking style, or more or less experience. (More experienced players have more complex song symbols)
- The white cloak shows advanced knowledge of the game, as it's unlocked after you find every scarf fragment. (Often literally through (for example) the use of song to refresh your scarf and also activate dormant scarfs in the environment)
- The scarf length is a really intuitive way to see people's agility, and the fact that renewing it combines with the speech system (meaning you only really need two buttons for the game) lends it a beautiful simplicity you just can't get with games less artful, it's just focused solely on being an experience.
He started with John Mountain II, he ended with John Friend
Sometimes making a friend is far more important than complete success - that’s what makes you fully fulfilled and complete. I guess that sums up the journey of life. It’s never really about the destination- it’s about our journeys
Journey is one of my favorite games of all time. The soundtrack CONSISTANTLY makes me cry, and I'm super excited to see you playing it :3

What a strangely comforting experience... it was somber, but quite personal. The multiplayer mechanics really use their simplicity well!
It's not for everyone though and thats perfectly fine, it's more importaint to play things that make you happy! ^-^
Chances are we've probably met! That's the joy of Sky. You don't know anyone!
Hello fellow sky kid! 👋
hi fellow skykid!!!
Such a crazy twist that this was all a dream induced by nightmare gas coming from stolen gold
it was all because of the *ONE MILLION DOLLARS*
I will be experiencing this game for the first time with this video, and i cannot wait to go on this Journey with you all
I absolutely love the little chirps in this game.
Journey and RTGame is such a comfort food
I can’t believe Journey is over ten years old. It’s aged incredibly well.

A completely dialogueless game ending with a sub alert of YOU THREW MY SANDWICH AWAY is exactly how this playthrough should have gone
i’m so so glad you played this. i downloaded it one day because it was free and i fell in love.
I found this beautiful comment on a 12 yr old Journey video:
"What exactly do you do in Journey, like what's it about?"
"Well, your character starts out in a desert and tries to get to a mountain, and then you find God."
"So your character is just trying to find god?"
"No. Your character is trying to get to the top of the mountain. You are the one who finds God."
I may not have found God, but I found something that touched my soul more than I could ever have hoped for, or expected from, a video game.
Journey is a criminally underrated game
Finally a video game video without any flaws in the title!

Along with flOw and Flower. Beautiful games
Only about an hour of time, but I cared so much about my new friend I played with :]
I’m hoping to play again sometime soon to see what else there is to discover!

I still remember one journey when we went thru the entirely last level entirely OOB it was so surreal and completely unique since i was never able to do the same oob myself
this game manages to be magical even when broken
it makes me so happy to see there are new ppl still playing this game enough that RT was able to meet some. journey online is competely different experience than solo
-going to the towers thingy
-spotting another guy who looked like me
-I touched him and my scarf got maxed out
-I just kept going up and then the game ended
- me going “the fuck just happened?”
Here in 5:05, no one chooses to honk for the beef. It’s better to be safe and do the one blonk honk for the chicken rather than risk your entire life for just half a honker bar more.
Props to your editor for pumping these out so quickly. You’re easily one of my favorite content creators so I enjoy watching these videos
Sky children of the light is a similar experience. And absolutely worth playing as well. Yeah Dan, please play Sky. You'd love it
This game will always have a special place in my heart, and it was lovely to see you play through it!
God no matter who I watch play this I always just cry in the end. The music is too powerful for me to listen to every time.
God I love this game short beautifully and the fact that others can join you on your journey together is just amazing
How many times I've played and cried at this game, it's been so long, I've loved it so much
This video inspired me to boot up Journey again, I was in the last chapter, not expecting anyone to be playing in the morning when another person appeared and the last achievement i needed, to travel with 10 unique players showed up.
This is genuinely one of my favorite games EVER. I'm so excited dad hets to experience this!
I'm so strangely emotional right now/ I've never seen any content of this game, or even heard of it before. But wow, what a journey to take, and with another person.. Not able to talk, but your form of communication sounding like music when you sing together. I hope whoever was the Friend we met here has an amazing day, or perhaps even comes across this video and feels all the love we have to give them
5:39, in all my years of playing this game I never realized this.
A silent Co-Op game is such a simple concept, but when executed correctly it's an amazing one
Also dont give them a hot beverage, instead just a warm one and have them sip, not drink, it
If you like Journey I highly recommend Abzu
It is just as pretty and ethereal feeling as Journey but it's a deep sea world you get to explore
wonderful sound design, amazing visuals and the gameplay is just as fun imo
yes, a good recommendation!
