I’ve just done my first harvest of leek (used to live in the tropics and last year moved to a temperate climate where I can now grow these,) and hardly have any white shank! Lol, I'm watching this video with the volume off and the subtitles on but just watching you pour and mix the soil instead of reading the subtitles. With the camera angle, I can't help but focus on your dog and imagining what your dog is thinking: "Are we gonna dig? Can I dig now? I see you digging in the dirt. Do I get a chance to dig in the dirt too?" Then finally your dog looks down away from the wheelbarrow and with sad eyes seems to be thinking: "You get to dig in the dirt and I have to just stand here and watch you while I don't even get a piece of dirt to dig". Poor baby. As far as the content of what you are showing us in how to grow Leeks in a pot, you give exactly the information I have been looking for. THANK YOU! I had trouble finding a way to properly support my Leeks as they grew, so I thought of using a plastic bottle to hold up my Leek, but wanted to check and see what experienced growers are doing to support their Leeks as they grow. Perfect :)

To all those cooks who hate using leeks because of the sand which gets in the stem, between the leaves. Chop the leeks or slice them to the size you need, toss them into sieve and run water over them or if extra dirty, into a pail or basin of water and swish to your hearts' content. The leaves will all separate and the sand or dirt will sink to the bottom. Then pour the leaks into a strainer or sieve. Dump the mud out and repeat if necessary. Voila! clean and 'easy peezy'. No work to that at all! Enjoy all!
Rather than pouring the leaks into a strainer. Lift them out of the water with your hands or a slotted spoon or smaller strainer and place them into a strainer. You'll avoid disturbing the sand in the pail that way.
Great tips, thanks! Without these secrets a beginner might be disheartened by his failures. Leeks and carrots are among my favourite vegs and I would try to grow them first. Your method for carrots is very ingenious too. I will study carefully every one of your videos.

nice clay soil . we have that in zone 9 a US. those leeks are great, lots of veggie meat and short on the crazy hair looking leaves and I see exactly what I did wrong! loved the video and Miss Molly! She is lovely

Not exactly sure what leeks are, but I want to grow them now! lol My 'green thumbs' are getting itchy after watching all these gardening videos...hahaha Right now I've got red, yellow and green bell peppers, tomatoes, spinach, scallions, sweet onions, kale, peas, 2 types of basil, lemon thyme, raddish, carrots and parsley growing in pots. I doubt that I will get any carrots...never had any luck with them, but the tops are so pretty that I grow them anyways. I love being able to cut fresh, home grown herbs to use whilst cooking. I just love playing in the dirt, experimenting with different vegetables. It's like my version of going to church...I feel closer to Nature whilst gardening. Thanks for sharing. My Grandfather used copper tubing for plumbing over his his leeks and green onions. My father uses PVC tubing, it is cheaper than copper. Just an Old Timers Trick
Your Grandfather was smart! Trace amounts of copper which are chipped off into the soil when he hammered that tube into rocks n stones, gave the soil back small amounts of copper which are good for plants and humans!
ridge method plant on top of mounds in 3 inch wide holes 6 inches deep just drop leek in hole and water in this is the method i was learnt on an organic veg farm works great on wetter ground
we use a wooden broken spade handle the handle on top makes it easy to push into ground and do a 360 movement to strengthen hole walls this a a quick and tried and tested method to make your holes
I bet leeks grown this way are much cleaner too! I seldom buy leeks because it's such a pain to wash all the grit out of the leaves. I've never grown leeks before, I'll look them up in our county planting calendar - I think they're a winter crop here in California. Thanks for the vid!
aramintypotter I'm in fresno. I plant leek seed in unheated greenhouse in January. When they are big enough to handle, I transplant 6 inches deep in raised beds. ( usually in end of march to middle of April. They start harvesting in late July as baby leeks and harvest as needed until march of next year. In that second April they will go to seed. I let the 2 best shaped leaf structure with biggest shank cross pollinate and collect seed in august. You can harvest leeks anytime they are large enough to eat through to when they go to seed. I hope this helps

Hello John. Leeks and Onions can be started indoors as soon as January / February here in the UK. They will need some warmth to germinate and once through they will need light. I like to 'get Christmas done' (to much politics) then start to sow seeds. HGV
Rinse the grit out of the bottoms by quartering them from the base... but not all of the way up so you keep them together. Easy to use method that works excellent for grilled leeks, which I have all the time!
There in not much chance of grit getting into the leek. The leaf joints are several inches above the soil level and about twelve inches above soil level at time of harvest. I still give them a good wash before cooking them though, 'just in case'. HGV

Hi Home Grown Veg: have you any videos of restarting vegetables from cutting off the roots? Like spring onion, regular onions, celery, leeks, lettuce? I have started sticking the cut roots in a shallow bowl of water... and then planting in 5 gallon buckets. I am unsure what to expect. I have not seen you restart any cuttings. Do you have any videos of restarting from cuttings? I live in California so growing season is 12 mos out of the year.
Hello Robyn. All the restart videos I have ever seen are exactly that. A few leaves start to grow and that's it. Never have I seen a vegetable produced like the one that the cutting was taken from. SUPERB "How To" Video... A couple of questions Sir. Sorry, I have "Yankee Ears" here; in the beginning of the video, are you saying and sifting "Mole Hills" or "Morels"; can't quite hear it clearly. Also, do you think it would "hurt" the growth of the leeks if you trim off the overspill of the green tops as they grow? I was thinking that since the tops are not desirable; just trim them off which might allow more nutrition to the desired "white" area and just throw in the compost pile as fresh nitrogen greens. I will try doing this with one pot of your method as an experiment to see this coming spring [March 2019 here in the SW Desert of the States]. Thank You.
Hi there. It's your nosey neighbor. What is your plant hardiness zone? I looked at a map of the UK but I don't know how far up the map you are located. I'm in zone 8a. about a mile from the Atlantic Ocean. What's your plan for spring planting and germinating seeds? I will be using buckets and bags.

Instead of chopping first and then washing them and stripping away the nutrients, *simply remove the stalks and separate each leaf and wash them*

Hi Home Grown Veg: have you any videos of restarting vegetables from cutting off the roots? Like spring onion, regular onions, celery, leeks, lettuce? I have started sticking the cut roots in a shallow bowl of water... and then planting in 5 gallon buckets. I am unsure what to expect. I have not seen you restart any cuttings. Do you have any videos of restarting from cuttings? I live in California so growing season is 12 mos out of the year.
Hello Robyn. All the restart videos I have ever seen are exactly that. A few leaves start to grow and that's it. Never have I seen a vegetable produced like the one that the cutting was taken from. I have never found the need to soak Leek seeds. Just sow them and keep moist. HGV

One of the reasons I grow stuff in buckets is because my garden is not so big. If I had more room I would grow a few fruit bushes but I haven't. Thanks for the comment. HGV

I think growing in containers is a fabulous idea. we rent a property but we don't know how long will stay there..That's why I prefer growing in containers. ..

SUPERB "How To" Video... A couple of questions Sir. Sorry, I have "Yankee Ears" here; in the beginning of the video, are you saying and sifting "Mole Hills" or "Morels"; can't quite hear it clearly.
Also, do you think it would "hurt" the growth of the leeks if you trim off the overspill of the green tops as they grow? I was thinking that since the tops are not desirable; just trim them off which might allow more nutrition to the desired "white" area and just throw in the compost pile as fresh nitrogen greens.
I will try doing this with one pot of your method as an experiment to see this coming spring [March 2019 here in the SW Desert of the States]. Thank You.

Why not fill the bottles with compost as the leeks grow. That would also keep the light out
Leeks are delicious mild and zingy onion flavor. I lived in Florida and don't know if I can grow them here

Hi there. It's your nosey neighbor. What is your plant hardiness zone? I looked at a map of the UK but I don't know how far up the map you are located. I'm in zone 8a. about a mile from the Atlantic Ocean. What's your plan for spring planting and germinating seeds? I will be using buckets and bags.
