- Planting Leeks in a pot might not be a bad idea particularly if your short of space and you have some spare Leeks. There's only one way to find out. Let's do it. This video is only part of the story. If you want to see how the story ends click on this link • How to grow organic ve... to watch one of the follow up video's that I have posted.
This works!! Good to see someone not wasting their time with 'filling the hole with water to just cover the roots'. What a waste of time - but everyone seems to do it for some reason. This video is what productive growing is all about - maximum yield in the smallest space with the minimum effort. Highly recommended practice in this video!! Great work.
Watching the video I learned how to supply air to roots of the leeks pot. Amazing!
I must have missed that part. What did he do to supply air to the roots?
I now say that I "give my vegetables a drink" it sounds so much better than "watering my vegetables!"
I started with your leek reveal video so I came back to this one. I can't believe how small these starts were! I think I'm going to plant some leek seeds using my Winter Sowing technique, putting the seeds out in winter in the snow in mini greenhouses. Think it will work? I'll let you know if I get leek seedlings in spring!
Sheryl :)
Hello Sheryl
I have just sown some leek seeds indoors. I expect I will grow then on for about 2 months on a windowsill then move them outdoors to 'harden off'. The early potatoes (not yet planted) will be harvested from pots early summer and the compost returned to the pot. I will add a little fertiliser and then plant the leeks in that pot. Two crops from one pot in one growing season. At least that's the plan. The leeks will grow on and stand through winter and even if they get frozen in I have a cunning plan. Click the link to see how its done. th-cam.com/video/H1icW773z9Q/w-d-xo.html
PS I don't think your leeks will germinate in a cold greenhouse. Try some indoors and some outdoors to give yourself a better chance of success. Thanks for the comment.
Thanks for this - I don't have a garden so I grow all my veg in pots in the yard. I got some leek seedlings from my brother; can't wait to see how they turn out :)
I'm glad he mentioned the blackbirds, I hear them outside all the time but they hang around in bushy evergreens so never knew what type of bird was making that sound
Hello the cheveron. Blackbirds like to sit as high as they can then sing their hearts out. The one on this video sits on the house roof next door and tries to outsing any other Blackbirds in the neighbourhood. HGV
Great video! Thanks for posting. I'm excited to give these a shot.
Very nice!
what part of yorkshire do you hail from?loving the blackbirds!very informative thanks
+hercharms Hello Hercharms. Just read your comment. I hail from the Cumberland part of Yorkshire.
oh,i'm a bradford lass!hope your well.have a lovely christmas!
+hercharms Have a nice Christmas yourself.
So when and how often do you water the pot?
ty. I am waiting for deliv of some heritage leek seeds which I shall plant in deep tubs as soon as they arrive. Having to wing it on my first year with an allotment. But seems the weather is going to be generous this year (2016) so am hoping I hit fortunate:)
+Darling Stuff Hello. Only plant the leek seeds as deep as the packet recommends. If you are unfortunate with your seeds you can always buy some seedlings to pot up later.HGV
Thank you:) all exciting
How tall should the leeks be before planting to their forever home?
I've got some mammoth leeks seedlings that are ready to repot, but not sure how much space they need between them. Also, can these be grown in a grow bag, or do they need more depth? x
These were some big leeks I potted up a few years ago. The buckets are only 10" deep and from recollection the root base was about 2 inches below the surface: th-cam.com/video/nNp3ReC9f2Q/w-d-xo.html
Do you ever use Epson Salts on your veggies or plants? Mobile, Alabama USA
I haven't yet but I might need to give it a try. HGV
Nice
Thanks from Russia for your experience! 💐 I haven't any patio, so I'd like to grow leeks on my windowsill. Is it possible, what do you think? 🤔
I think they grow too big for that. HGV
@@HomeGrownVeg Thanks for the answer. However, I'll give it a go.
Thankyou - my leeks seedlings are looking drunk (lolling to the side) is that normal will the righten themselves
As long as you don't let them dry out they should 'pick up' as they grow bigger. Jim.
@@HomeGrownVeg Thankyou
The first thing I noticed in the video were the birds singing. :)
I’m not sure how these turned out but my preference is to not fill the holes back in but let the leeks grow to fill the space. Otherwise it can lead to a gritty shaft and trust me, nobody likes a gritty shaft!
how many seeds do i plant in each hole ?
+Rex Koenig Hello Rex. I start seeds in a seed tray or a smaller plant pot. Start more than you need. I then transplant the leeks into this larger pot to grow on. Another way of doing this is to just buy the small leek plants from your local garden center ( April-May-June is soon enough) and transplant them into a pot. Hope this helps.

Ahh don't worry I've seen the update. Me bad thanks mate.. Vinny
Fruits For Life
Hello Vinny: The leaks were a great success as you have now
seen on the follow up video. I will do the same again this year. When I empty a
pot off early potatoes in two or three
months time, I will re use the compost, re use the pot, chuck in a slack hand
full of Blood Fish and Bone, bang some leeks in and we're off. Take a look at
this vid. It's typical of what can be achieved with early potatoes in these pots. th-cam.com/video/SqooPDEMmOo/w-d-xo.html
Thanks will do. Take care
Where you buy the wooden tool ?
happy75bts you can get them in any garden centre they are called a dibber
Hello Fishy. Thats correct, you can buy a dibber at a garden centre but recycling what you already have is much more pleasing. To check out what I recycled to use when transplanting Parsnips click the link. HGV th-cam.com/video/PHBl_QZotBs/w-d-xo.html
How do you make the white part longer?
Hello Um. By excluding the light you will make more white. Plant the leek deep or pull up earth around it as it grows or as I do, use a collar that keeps the light out and the shank in the dark.
Check this out, hope it helps. HGV. th-cam.com/video/mkc5Su9Pq6A/w-d-xo.html
Home Grown Veg
Thank you. that's a good idea I may use toilet rolls as a collar.

0:55 that looked to be only 1 to 1-1/2 inches deep. How critical Is the depth?
Hello Lenny
I planted the leeks about 3" deep and about 2" below the top of the pot. Since then the leeks have grown and I have topped the pot off with compost so the roots of the leeks are about 5" down. That should give me 5"+ of shank(white),when I drop the pot, in a week or two's time(look out for the video). The leeks were like a blade of grass when I potted them, some are now about 1" thick. Whatever I get it will be a bonus as I had no room in my raised beds for them. Planting depth is not that critical but if you have a go at growing leeks in pots, as they get bigger they will blow over, so try to stand them in a sheltered location. Hope this helps.
Home Grown Veg the hole you made with that stick looked to be much less then 3 inches.
Lenny F
Hello again Lenny You may well be right about the depth of the hole but it's not critical.
Home Grown Veg I’ve been trying to grow leeks for a year and not had good success.
Lenny F Lenny Leeks aren't that difficult to grow. Perhaps you've just had a bit of bad luck. Have another go next year and good luck.
Why 10"? 10 leeks, 10 inch pot, why not? - love it . Well I got 4 leeks so...
