    I was hiking in the Sierra Nevada foothills near Cool California about six months ago when I saw two of these go over. First time I had ever seen any and I was very excited, being a military aircraft buff. They have a distinctive sound that is sort of between a helicopter and a prop aircraft. Very impressive. And yes there is a town in Northern California named "Cool."

      Little known fact: when Congress was looking at choping it, the state of California, under the signature of the then Governor, sent a letter fully supporting it. They stated they saw the expansion of VTOL technology into civilian aircraft as having a great future in noise reduction at major airports.

      Because the Osprey is an extremely versatile aircraft they are now serving with the armed forces of many nations. The U.S. uses it in diverse applications ranging from Special Forces to replacing the Carrier delivery Greyhound which is heavily depicted in videos here on You Tube. A few years ago the California coast where I live was completely covered with fires. That included Vandenberg AFB where they were burning right toward their giant satellite missle launching towers. Because that was the first year of aircraft shortages, when they had to park a bunch of obsolete planes, the Osprey came to the rescue. Though not part of their modular design, they fitted makeshift emergency water tanks to do fire drops. We have watched them here at the local airport where they sometimes do practice "touch & goes". They are a truly amazing aircraft!

    Actually there is a driveshaft that links the two engines. It can have a single engine out and power can be delivered either left to right or right to left. The engine is capable of delivering this kind of power. I'm sure the pucker factor would be high if it was loaded with fuel and cargo.

    • @chrissmith7669

      No the Osprey is just strictly ad a cargo plane, it’s only armed with machine guns as a defensive weapon, however the Us marines is looking for attack version of the Osprey, it will be slightly smaller than the MV-22 and it will only have two crew the pilot and the weapons operator in the tandem crew configuration, it believed to be armed with a 30 mm chain gun just like the one the Apache helicopter have and an internal weapon bay in the fuselage, that opens up to fire its hellfire missile.

    why don't we replace the fan with jet engine?

    • @robertbrockway6580
      @robertbrockway6580 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The fuel usage would be high and the exhaust blast on the ground would be sucked back into the intake and stall the engine.

      No I don’t think a jet engine would be wise choice for it engine, and besides there’s already a prototype aircraft with the same configuration like the Osprey with its two jet engine nacelles on the wingtips.
      Here’s a video link of that aircraft I was referring to.
