There are literally people talking about islamifying non-muslim countries and imposing Sharia law. Why should non-muslims have to put up with such disrespect? Imagine if non-muslims did that in Muslim countries. Thus, Dhimmis are a protected class which pay Jizya. Read the plethora of books written on the case of Jizya, many instances arose in history, even within the life of the Holy Prophet, where Jizya was altogether forgiven as a tax, or reduced significantly. Add to that, the fact that many times, as noted in The Cambridge companion books to Islam, that Jizya was often lower than ZAKAT tax, the Muslim tax. Add to that, when a non-Muslim entity paid Jizya, they freed themselves of the obligations of protecting the country through military service, whereas Muslims paid more tax and STILL had to serve in the military. Don't take my word for it, take the word of the Christian city of Homs which was estatic when Muslims imposed Jizya (since the Romans kept ransacking them) and cried when the Muslims had to strategically abandon it. Take the example of Egypt in the time of Caliph Uthman, who requested the Muslims to once again invade and defeat the Romans because the Romans ransacked the entire country!
