I am a woman of color and I actually think about children in places like Ukraine and how it would be good for them to get Caucasian
dolls that look like them. However, how wonderful for children to have the opportunity to love a different race doll. Once again, we can pray and trust the Lord to get the right boxes to the right children.

Thank you so much for doing this! That first question really strikes a cord as I'm reminded of a conversation I had with a good friend of mine a few months ago. He is from the Caribbean and was telling me that the one pet peeve he has with foreign aid (not necessarily from any particular religious group) when they came to distribute was the 'superiority' attitude of the distributers. This sentiment was also shared by another coworker who had lived in several African countries in the past. I like Kayla's answer to that question.
Yup, I've been steering towards non-caucasian dolls as the boxes from Canada go to darker-toned countries.
Good to know about the soap!
This is the first year that I've been packing shoes. I've definitely been trying to go for the top end.
Ultimately yes, pray over your boxes as you pack!
    Thanks for doing this Robynn!

I just hope that God uses the boxes to spread Joy and love and if that means no foreigners I'm totally ok with that. :)

Thank you so much Robynn and Kayla. This was extremely enlightening, particularly how the ministry of issuing shoeboxes works on the other end. I found the info about melting soap so very interesting, answering a lot of questions in my head about all the recent hoopla going on regarding soap in the shoeboxes. Also, so glad to hear clarification on graph paper vs lined paper 👍. Regarding the coloring of dolls, I agree, but I don’t worry about it as much as I used to since watching a TH-camr, Rina, of One Child At A Time, who is not associated with OCC, but has her own outreach going on for impoverished children in México, Peru, Philippines and South America (she’s sort of a one woman show). She has made mention several times that the children of color she distributes toys and clothing to love getting caucasian baby dolls. I guess it’s sort of like kids who don’t speak English love getting T-shirts with English words on them. Just thought I’d throw that out there as even more food for thought and confusion, 😂. I was also very interested in Kayla‘s view on shoes. Although I love to pack shoes bc I know these kids could use them, I find it very arduous (to fit in the box and to feel comfortable it’s going to fit the child who receives) with the exception of the 2-4 age range. I feel so much better hearing Kayla articulate what I’ve been feeling about shoes! Thank you so much for doing this video ❤️

    • @mattmanandrobynn

Thanks for this amazing comment! I agree speaking with a missionary on the ground has helped me rethink how I pack. I still think baby dolls of any complexion are special and shoes can be very important. It’s really all about how the Lord leads us. 🥰 the more boxes I pack and the more I learn, the more I think there are as many “right” ways to pack as their are children to receive boxes. ❤️

Thanks for sharing this Robynn and Kayla! While I agree that sending a baby doll of color would be more ideal, I think any baby doll is precious and will be loved! Many of my boxes go to Africa as well as South American countries. I think sending shoes in the higher size range are great! Shoes in Africa can be a life saver! I can't always fit shoes in my boxes but if it is laid on anyone's heart, I think it's great! I definitely need to pack more 10-14 boys boxes! I think I will just line boxes up and pack multiples of them! lol. Thanks again for setting this up! Wonderful idea!

Hey Robyn after watching Sonia’s box packing I had a thought. Since you have created printable instructions for many items what do you think about a little note to put right on top of the box inside for the processing center volunteers about the rubber bands? Maybe something like please put all rubber bands in the box before taping? I have often wondered what happens to all those rubber bands and not everyone may stick them back in the box. Just a thought 😀

    • @Kit.Nicole
      @Kit.Nicole 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

From what I've heard, at the Canadian processing centre, the volunteers are instructed to put the rubber bands inside the box once they finish going through everything. They don't want those going to waste 👍

      @@georgewagner7787 interesting!
We purchased non-toxic, anti-dust crayola chalk 12 count boxes. No warning of carcinogens. However, it was surprising to me how much chalk dust was in mailing package.
I've worked with grinded up chalks, charcoal ect. in art classes that I tutor.
I certainly wouldn't want a child to be breathing in that amount of powdered chalk, which was a case of chalk.
These chalk boxes weren't shipped with care, so perhaps that was one reason for the amount of loose powder.
I'm glad it happened so I now know how to package our chalk better!

Amazing questions, really helpful to know this information!! It make sense because soaps are not on this list of OCC anymore!! I wasn’t going to send them this year just because I was thinking they had a reason to take them off the list!! Really helpful to know to send the biggest age group for each box and especially on sending sandals!! I live that if the shoes don’t fit that they encourage the kiddos to bless someone else 🥰!! Going to rethink deodorant. I bought it when I first started packing, but stopped because I thought it would be better to use the space for a longer lasting item.
I agree with all the comments regarding dolls. I pack all kinds and colors of dolls. My own granddaughters (one with dark skin, one with light skin) have never shown any preferences and neither of them chose dolls that looked like them when I took them to the AG store. @Barreto Family ... I like to believe so. I always go for quality, cuteness and accessories. I wind up with a variety of skin tones and hair/eye colors. It's things other than dolls where I get bogged down in making decisions. I'm still thinking about graph paper since these videos, for one. I noticed today that Walmart has composition books with graph paper and I'm trying to decide whether to switch to packing those instead of lined paper. The thing is many of my boxes go to African countries. I haven't heard what kind of paper kids there tend to need for school. Maybe I need to do a bit of research. 😊

So glad you did this interview and glad my questions got answered. I didn't know about the soap; so I may choose not to send any this year. I haven't bought any soap yet. One year I thought my box would go a Latin American country. Where I live my boxes go to Dallas so I reasoned that Latin America is closest and the most likely destination. I decided to get a bunch of Elena of Avalor Barbies so they would look like the girl receiving the box. That year God decided to send all my boxes to Gabon, Africa. I now think maybe it is a sign that the skin color really shouldn't matter. I hope the girls receiving the boxes will love their dolls regardless of skin color. I have also thought about maybe sending more than one doll in a box with both being a different skin color. Sort of making the statement that people of different races can be friends. I have been buying mostly darker skin tone dolls but I do have some blonds and red heads in the mix as well.

Love your thoughts on the dolls, and I think this has been a beautiful conversation here with many people... Maybe it really doesn't matter.
