The Dam Neck guys saw those carbines and had their armorers build similar variants for them, and by that time, the M4A1 had gone into production (1994), so both JSOC Recce elements were using M4 uppers with scope riser bases and rings with different optics, along with KAC CF tubes, Aluminum FF tubes, and eventually the KAC FF RAS for Dam Neck and KAC MRE for The Unit.
CAG was using Japanese 1.5-4.5 Microdot LPVOs before S&B made the Short Dot for them.
Dam Neck was using ACOGs on earlier guns, and then the NF 2.5-10x24 on the FF RAS 15.1" barrel carbines.

Some of them had the armorers build them free-floated 723s originally, with FSP pocket cuts and aluminum tubes, then the KAC SR-25 tubes with AR-15 barrel nuts.
Optics were either Aimpoints or 1.5-4.5x Japanese Microdots on risers and rings with shaved uppers or carry handles with scope rails in the channel. They wanted a light sniper support carbine that they could also clear space with, flow through on-TGT and into position for exfil right along with the Assaulters.
Dam Neck Recce Troop guys (Snipers) saw those and had their armorers build some off their Colt 727s and then the M4A1s, since the M4A1 went into production in 1994, so there was no more need to shave uppers.
The KAC FF RAS and MRE were direct response products from KAC to those SMUs, with MREs mainly going to CAG and rifle-length FF RAS to Dam Neck for the SEAL Recce system.
CAG basically kicked-off this whole direction for the AR-15. They got the S&B Short Dot and also used some Leupold 2.5-8x36 and other optics, user-driven as long as it held up to the shoot schedule.

I’m glad you mentioned the fact that having a higher magnification scope is a good idea you are going to get a better sight picture running a 5-25 on 14x than running a 3-14 maxed out. I had not considered that until you mentioned it here

    • @danielsullivan5287
      @danielsullivan5287 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

One more thing to think about is how usable the reticle is at that magnification. I have a 4-24FFP that I run mostly at 12x but the mils are less useful at that magnification than I'd like. For this reason I have been looking at the 3-15s FFP to run at 12x still.

    • @googlechicken

@@danielsullivan5287 what makes them Les useful are they harder to see at 12x the whole reason for having an ffp is that the reticle is accurate throughout the magnification range I understand if it’s being used under 10 power that the graduations may be to small to use is that what you are referring to? I would have thought at 10x and above the reticle would be useable, if not why not just get the second focal plane version and save some cash

    • @J_Un1t
      @J_Un1t หลายเดือนก่อน

@@googlechickenwhat he’s saying is that because ffp reticles scale with magnification they have to be designed to be not insanely huge at high magnification. This leads to *sometimes* to setups in 5-25 or 6-36 scopes where they are very hard to see at lower mags compared to other reticles.
But this can be analyzed before purchase by researching the reticle size before purchasing. If it’s .09 mrad it’s always .09 mrad.
A good reverse example is the athlon helps 2-12. Works awesome at low mag, very easy to see but at 12 it’s obnoxiously large for what you want to do when you’re at 12
The tangent gen2xr is a good example of a fine reticle built to be used up at high mag that becomes useless at anything less than 15x

If you're going through the trouble, time, money and effort to build a 5.56 SPR, the following will drastically increase your odds of success:
    1: 223 Wylde chamber
2: 1:8 twist(it will stabilize any available practical precision projectiles that can be loaded to 2.260". Too much spin "highlights the flaws in the bullets".)
3: 5R rifling( not sure why, but it seems to slightly increase the odds of tiny groups, many theories exist)
4: Adjustable gas block(restricting gas to the min for bolt hold open keeps your gun slightly cleaner and gives you a small velocity bump of 25 to 100 FPS)
5: high quality bolt head spaced to the barrel
6: a thermal fit of the barrel to the upper( warm up the upper in the over at 200F to 30 min, then slip the barrel in)
7: tune the gun to run on the least gas possible(light recoil spring, light buffer, light BCG, see #4 for reasons)
8: rifle length or rifle length + gas system( smoother running means staying on target, spotting shots and more rapid follow up)
9: Top end magnification to 10 to 20 power, with a Christmas tree
    10: free floated hand guard
    11: a solid trigger
12: ALL ambi controls(so you don't have to break cheek weld to operate the rifle)
My recommended companies that have allowed me to build sub MOA repeatedly
    X-Caliber Barrels
Superlative Arms gas blocks and tubes
    JP precision bolts
Aero Precision M4E1 upper and lowers
    Springco springs
    PA, Swampfox, or Athlon optics
Monstrum PRO 7075 mount(6061 mounts have a real bad habit of bending, even the $600 ones)
    Midwest Industries hand guards
    MBT triggers
I've tested 24 types of factory ammo in 4 rifles(SPR build, $400 poverty pony, FN M16A4 clone, FN M4 clone)
If you have zero interest in screwing around, and just want a rock solid factory ammo choice, buy IMI Razor Core 77gr SMK OTM LR MOD-1 BROWN BOX by the pallet and send it. The green and tan IMI is NOT the same thing, not even close. BROWN BOX finished in the top 5 for all 4 rifles, for precision and velocity(other 4 were different for each rifle). You might be able to find factory ammo to beat IMI brown box, but you'll have to do quite a bit of testing.

    • @joearledge
      @joearledge 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@mhhh7721 So... I'm assuming you've never built a gas gun and aren't familiar with the physics behind it.
In order to cycle, you have to overcome: mass(brass, BCG and it's guts, hammer, buffer & spring), spring force(hammer & buffer spring), and friction(all of the above).
In a given rifle, it takes "X" amount of force to overcome all of that. Not all rifles are the same, because the mass, friction, and springs are not the same in all rifles.
So, you need just enough gas to create "X" amount of force to cycle(bolt lock back on an empty mag for this application). Much more than that, and it's a waste of energy in the system(energy provided by the gas).
You can manipulate the "X" amount of force required to cycle, by messing with the mass, friction, and springs. If you reduce / lighten all of these, "X" decreases, and the opposite is also true.
By using an adjustable gas block that restricts the flow through the gas tube, you are able to get just enough gas to achieve "X". Normally, most people open it 1 more click after bolt lock back to ensure reliability. This is still far less gas going down the gas tube than in a "normal" rifle.
This allows us to use the energy of the gas to push the pill a little faster, because it's not being dumped into the gas tube unnecessarily. It also means a slightly cleaner receiver.
The default for the average off the shelf rifle with a normal barrel, gas block, trigger group, BCG & guts, buffer and buffer spring is "gas cranked up to 11". Manufacturers do this because they want it to run with EVERYTHING. This includes the El Cheapo steel case 55gr imported ghetto blaster special doing 2500 FPS from a 16". If it didn't run with the nastiest cheapest sketchiest factory loads, the manufacturers would get a mountain of angry phone calls and horrible reviews, because the average person's understanding is not much beyond "bullets go bang". You were smart enough to ask the question, so you are more advanced than average.
For non-adjustable gas blocks, I usually use a normal weight BCG & guts, might upgrade the trigger group, then play with buffer and buffer spring weights so that the force needed to cycle matches the gas. This results in smoother shooting and slightly cleaner receiver.
You can tune any of the above variables to any ammo(premium hand loads or 55gr ghetto blaster), depending on what your are trying to do. The whisper pickle bois mess with this stuff on a pretty regular basis, because a can changes the equation.
Anyway, sorry for the novel, hope it helps, let me know if you have questions.

It was easier to do with the M16A1 and M4A1, harder to do with the M16A2 and M4 due to that stupid BURST mechanism. The secondary clutch disconnector for the BURST feature is still engaged while in SEMI auto, so we would typically see 2 rounds touching, with one flier on BURST mechanism A2s or M4s.

@@CivilianOperators I'm 100% correct on all counts, and here are the irrefutable merits: Rifles historically have 24"-30" barrels, and this was true with US service rifles like the M1903, M1917, and M1 Garand until the M-14, which has a 22" barrel, but with a long flash suppressor that makes it even longer.
M-1 Carbine has just under an 18" barrel.
AR-15 prototypes started out with a 22" barrel, which was then shortened to 20" with Colt 601 production. 20" is technically carbine length if you look at any of the carbines from the late 1800s-1950s, but the US called it a "service rifle".
18" is carbine territory, but attaching a can makes it rifle-length, however the attachment isn't permanent.
The first carbine of the Colt family of weapons was the Model 605 with a 15" barrel, named the Infantry Leader Carbine. The shorter 10" and 11.5" XM177 series were called Commandos, even shorter than a carbine.
Colt 653 with 14.5" barrel was a Carbine, as were the 723 & 727 M16A2 Carbines, which birthed the M4 Carbine, all with 14.5" barrels.

It would open some minds to see the same test with a lightweight 16" AR10 in 308.
Significantly less wind drift, similar bullet drop, way larger bullet selection and much easier to spot your impacts and trace. All this, while delivering roughly 3 times the terminal performance on target.
You don't need as much ammo, because with a 308, you can incapacitate a warm blooded target with far less shots.

Great, honest video, and thank you for spending the $$$ to produce it for the world. You showed the good, bad, and everything in between. I must say I most appreciated your verbal summary at the end of the video where you encouraged everyone to "start with the basics" before trying to stretch things out to distance, like 600-800M. As a long time student of shooting and a long range shooting competitor, guns & gear geek, ammunition crafter, and general "deep dive" guy on guns and gear, a lot of what you said resonates with me. I personally start with a solid purpose of use (POU), do a TON of research on what to buy and why, including all components of the weapons system, and then start to dial it in. For 600-800M consistency, you HAVE to have a gun that is definitely sub-MOA from the bench, and you will need "heavy for caliber" bullets with higher than average BC's to get consistent hits in real-world scenarios. Once the ammo and gun and optics and ballistics systems and shooter are working consistently well from the bench at no less than 100 yards, then you can add range without it being a waste of time and ammo. One thing that I either didn't hear in the video or that I missed is what is your standard for terminal energy you are trying to achieve? I ask because I tend to believe a 14.5-16" 5.56 precision AR that is a .5-.75MOA gun at 100 yards with the right ammo (77gr Razorcore or similar) that has the right optic, tools for stability, etc. that replicate the kit on the featured SPR's can be plenty lethal at such ranges. In other words, spend more time on the best lethal and accurate ammo for a shorter barreled weapon, and you can cut some inches and weight off the rig and still be plenty "killy" as the Warrior Poet guys say. You could also pick a better AR-15 caliber, like a 6MM MAX, still have great magazine capacity, and do in 14.5 inches of barrel what 20" couldn't do in 5.56. I just think you first need to define how much energy is "enough" or needed at a given range, then perhaps also set an accuracy standard, like 1 or 2 MOA at any given distance, then pick the optimal ammo / barrel length combination that will minimally get you there, then build from there with optics, and everything else. Just my .$.02...

The rifles are easy. None of them are even that expensive all things considered. The optics are the real killers when it comes to long(ish) range guns.
Spending $2k one time on a truly good rifle isn't that bad. Realizing the optic you need in order to be able to take full advantage of that rifle's capabilities cost $3-4k, that's the hard part.

    • @seniortac4175

@clay7279.......I must have missed all those complaining about cost and being realistic out of the 213 comments I read through, I really didn't see any.
I have to assume, and I hate to do that, is you have a pretty good job that pays quite well and allows you to spend a considerable amount of money on a "personal defense budget" as you stated! If that is the case then congratulations, and keep up the good work! Even better if you're married and have children, a mortgage, multiple car payments and such. Kudos!
I believe it would be a very unfair and untrue statement to assume that many viewers don't already budget and focus on increasing their income, in order to better their way of living....let alone have a "personal defense budget" to spend each month.
Here's a better and far more realistic view of this and many other videos created.
T Rex arms is a very profitable company, and allows them the luxury to purchase all the super cool tactical gear we see each week in the videos.
Lucas himself makes pretty good money, as he should just from the brand.
The company makes real good money as it should, do to their hard work also.
Let's not forget the money they make from these videos....it is pretty substantial btw.
Also, don't forget all the ammo and gear that is given to them for the videos.
if you add that all up, we're looking at about $16 Million dollars in 2023, and close to $24 Million dollars in 2024, so far!!!
Please don't assume that I'm jealous by any means.
Lucas / T Rex arms has worked VERY hard to get where they are, and quite frankly I'm very proud of their accomplishments.
I do enjoy the majority of their videos, and I even have a few of their holsters.
But realistically and rationally thinking if Lucas and T Rex Arms wasn't as successful as they are, you wouldn't see all the weapons and high end gear, night vision, thermal imaging, suppressors that is being used in the videos, because he'd be in the same category as the vast majority of Americans, living on a budget and potentially struggling to save up for gear like most are!
To T Rex Arms and Lucas, God bless and keep up the great work, you are inspirational, and a true American success story!
And to you clay7292, I wish you many blessings, be safe and vigilant

What I have is a high level of self imposed discipline. I live below my means and I work each day to improve my ability to grow as a man and as an earner of money. In America we have the greatest opportunity in all of history where a person born into any circumstance has the ability to change their stripes. I currently have gone through a horrendous life change which was not of my creation and am rebuilding from scratch.
But for example if I made 3k per month I would budget $500 per month for personal defense giving me 6k per year to spend as I see fit. And I would sacrifice for the ability to set aside $500 per month by having roommates and not eating out because I value personal defense. We are guaranteed through the constitution and bill of rights. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Just because someone may make 2k per month or 100k per month I believe their right to life is their responsibility to protect. Hence a personal defense budget.
Now I personally have grown successful and I have been flat broke but what is in my bank account doesn’t matter to me. What matters is my abilities as a man, an American, a father. See I don’t think it’s easy to live a great life. I think it’s the hardest thing any man can choose to do. But I do believe it’s the best way to live life. Like I said above I am starting from scratch in life currently. But I have faith and confidence that I can build a new life much better than my old.
As for Lucas, he has created a great company, but his views on life seem to have stayed consistent. And he has always said if you can’t afford something don’t buy it! Live within your means! But that doesn’t mean don’t improve and grow and stretch and take risks. No man should be satisfied with where he is at today. He can always improve in all areas of life. I’m not supporting or not supporting Lucas. I’m in agreement with his hunger to grow and become better in all areas of life. When I see success or exceptionalism in any area I value it and it helps me know I can do better and achieve more as well.
Lastly I’ll say it again. People don’t know how to budget in this country. They don’t live within their means. Then wonder why money is always a problem. Anyone can choose to earn more and spend less in areas creating a surplus. I know that if every man in America would choose to be prepared and capable it would change the country’s trajectory in a single generation.

Which is why I hate that Walmart stop selling common ammo. I’d buy a few boxes with each grocery run. Now I have thousands of rounds that is slowly being depleted. But I still make at least one $100 ammo purchase a month. Regardless of how often I shoot. Eases the pain.

So that way when you're in that scenario again, you already know how to fix your setup on the fly and/or what adjustments to make. Because you've not only been there before and seen that problem before-- but you've also seen the solution.

Imagine how much faster you could be with the SPR type builds at range with a higher magnification BDC reticle scope like the ACSS HUD DMR reticle in some of Primary Arms scopes. Leupold had something similar in their Mark 8 line of scopes. You wouldn't have to dial the scopes and most of those reticles give you a rough means of range estimation and windage and bullet drop estimation. I love my 4-14x44 on my 20" AR.

I was using EXPS3 and did well with that optic. EXPS2-2 was game changer for me . First dot is 50Y and second dot is 460Y . My in between first and second dot is 360Y.
At the last 2Gun Match it took me 6 rounds in total to get 2 hits on reduced C zone at 475Y with 15mph wind..

Feel like a 11.5-12.5 GPR with LPVO+Red Dot and a nice bolt gun setup on the side is a better combo than an SPR. Feel like the SPR is the one that’s out of place where the CQB abilities suffer and the distance shooting is good but not great. But I guess from a “build 1 gun and that’s all you get” standpoint, I could see an SPR being fine.

There’s no place for a 308 bolt gun in modern fighting. That’s why the military has gone to magnums and all 308s are gas guns. The gas guns are just faster. Harder to shoot but in the context it’s not wise to shoot a 308 bolt gun against a 308 gas gun at 4-500 600 yards. If you don’t care and it’s just for hunting and hobby precision sure. I might do that myself. But if we want to fight with that 308. It needs to be a gas gun. Trust me. I’d love for it to be 30, 40, 50 years ago and the bolt gun is what it was cause the m14 kinda sucked. But. Just my opinion.

11.5”-12.5” Commando suppressed is the way to go, especially in a more capable cartridge like Grendel. Punches the steel really hard so there’s no doubt when you hit it like there is with anemic 5.56 once you get to 400yds. 10.5” Grendel makes the 18” 5.56 seem wimpy, because it is. I do love the gas system and BCG smoothness of 18” RLGS 5.56, but Grendel is also a pussycat to shoot. I tune them with Bootleg Adjustable carriers and extra power action springs. Too easy.

That Nosler RDF will take you to 900yds supersonic at sea level/59˚F from the 11.5” barrel. Works a lot better out to 550yds though for wind drift. I run LPVOs on 8.5”, 10.5”, and 12” Grendels. Very appropriate, especially the new wave of really compact LPVOs in 1-8x24 and 1-10x24.
