তার সপ্তকে গাওয়া গানকে শুনে, অত্যন্ত তীক্ষ্ণ ও অনভিজাত বোধ ক’রে বিরক্তিভরা অবজ্ঞায় দূরে ঠেলে দিতে পারি।
কিন্তু সাউন্ড ইন্ডাস্ট্রির আদি-পর্বে সেই আদিমতম প্রযুক্তির সীমাবদ্ধগুলিকে অতিক্রম করতে পথিকৃৎরা এতটাই অদম্য ছিলেন যে আমরা তাঁদের ছাড়া আমরা এখনকার এই সংগীত আদর্শে পৌঁছতে পারতাম না কখনই।
আজ তুলে ধরব হিন্দুস্থানী সংগীতে বিস্মৃতপ্রায় চরিত্র কলকাতার কোকিল, তওয়ায়েফ (tawaif) ও গ্রামোফোন-কন্যা মিস গওহরজান, কলকত্তেওয়ালী-র জীবন-কথা, সাধনা ও তাঁর যন্ত্রনা-দগ্ধ অসহায় করুণ পরিণতির কথা।
With the dawn of the new millennium and the advent of the CDs, DVDs, the MP3 players, the iPods, the iPhones, state of the art modern recording studios, digital mixing and remastering and a host of technologies, the old, three minute clips sung in great speed and in a high pitch by someone like Gauhar Jaan might appear shrill and unsophisticated.
But in those early days of the sound industry, the original pioneres were so indomitable in overcoming the limitations of that primitive technology that without them we would never have been able to reach the modern music scene.
Today we will highlight the life story, pursuit and the tragic consequences of the painstaking helplessness of the almost forgotten characters in Hindustani music, the cuckoo from Calcutta, Tawaif and gramophone celebrity Miss Gauharjan, Kolkattewali.
