    When I read it I think of it as when we read that we are born into iniquity is because of the sins of our fathers. We are not held accountable to this sin but we often fall victim to the same fate of these sins because we are not choosing to actively heal from them. Or allow God to cleanse us of them. I believe it’s where the thought of generational curses. If the enemy knows this is what your forefathers dealt with then he can make the assumption that these same problems will befall you and stumble you to pull you away from the favor and blessing and calling God has for your life.

    What I noticed with the Sodom and Gamorrah incident is that God STILL gave them as much time as possible. Noticed how God was walking with His angels? He didn’t just warp over to Sodom and proclaim judgment but He gave them the length of time it took to walk, meet up with Abraham, have a meal, talk to both Sarah and Abraham, and entertained Abraham’s attempts at intercession. It was like, He’s stalling. He knew what was going on there and yet took His time, as if to give them still a chance to repent.

    I do not have nearly the same level of study or understanding of the Bible as Tim or Job, but I view the 10th plague as a reflection of Pharaoh's decision to do the same to the Israelites. And I trust that whatever provision God gave to the baby boys who were thrown in the river, he provided the same for the firstborn of Egypt. Thank you again for all of the amazing content you all have provided to us. I look forward to following this and many other series.

    I believe generations suffer consequences from the sin of their fathers but God doesn't hold them accountable in the sense they will stand b4 God on their own account. Each one of us has a chance of redemption but we also live in a sinful world and sometimes suffer consequences of just that.

      If I can offer a thought; it may be that the idea of a first born isn't as important as trust in God. In my mind, things go sideways when we attempt to lift something (or someone) to a higher status based on external factors. It is often said that Jesus could see into a man's heart and that's an ability we do not have and, as such, should withhold anything that resembles a "title of nobility."

    • @Silvermoon1k
      @Silvermoon1k ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tczubernat I agree that the idea of trusting in God is much more important. I think it's safe to say all things boil down to that. I would say trusting in God is like addition/multiplication/etc in math. It's the basics and is always needed no matter how complicated things may seem. Learning about possible firstborn duties is just extra like algebra/calculus/etc. You graduate from one step to the next. I just want to make sure I have the right knowledge so I can pass down the correct level of importance of said knowledge. My parents left and still leave me in the dark about a lot. I am not that kind of person, so I will learn what I must to pass it down correctly. Besides, maybe something applies to me and how I should treat or understand my eldest sibling

    Tim and Jon, thank you for being truthful and upfront about your struggles with the tenth plague in this particular podcast. It’s not too often you find a ministry that is willing to be real and transparent with the struggles that are being wrestled with in the scriptures. I completely agree with Tim, I believe some things we question about the very nature and character about God, as revealed to us in His word, are a part of the journey. We may mentally struggle with it, we can pray about it, it may rock us to our core and our spirit. But somethings are not so black and white in their meaning and understanding as a modern reader. As a devout listener and follower of The Bible Project, I would love to hear an episode, series or dialogue about the Ezekiel 18 comparison of Yahweh. And the tenth plague comparison of Yahweh from your perspectives. That would be very interesting.
    Thanks for all you do, Bible Project team!

      I agree. I find if i just "hide it in my heart," as time goes on, i see Scripture clearer, and life is like living Scripture... i do not know how to explain that, except you can see the essence of stories and verses replaying in ourselves, others, and the world around us so that it brings to mind Scripture. The Holy Spirit seems to suddenly highlight it, and then we get a tiny understanding of meaning or forecast. A bit of an "a-ha" moment. We were just reading Romans 9. I was trying to explain to my son with Down Syndrome... not easy... but i get more than he does as i make this attempt. The stumbling stone... my son has trouble seeing and is stunned when he falls over something right in front of him. I think we do, too, and must pray for better eyes to see that the God who can actually block our vision for His purposes, will also hear our prayers for Light. He obviously loves a humble heart. I cannot remember Him resisiting an earnest seeker, can you? Some things are rather hidden until He wants them revealed, of course. Some things we cannot possibly understand because the fullness of that time is not yet, which is why John struggled with his visions. But, i think we can now see how some meaning is being revealed as a mirror showing us some surprising things, not at all as we expected, wrote about, made movies about. The "they" is us. How horrifying and humbling. The very family appointed by God turned their backs on their Savior, but so have we, the grafted family, by creating our own version of Christianity. It is not new, but a new and larger version world-wide, of an adulterous church. It stunned me to realize it is we who are now betraying our Christ with a false religion. How incredibly tragically sad. Only by truly seeking and studying Scripture in humility, as the Bible Project is showing us, can we get free of a man-made concept of Christianity. We must. I think The Bible Project is this generation's Billy Graham. I am made so joyful and hopeful by this incredibly devoted team! I have a new peace seeing how nany are searching earnestly. May God bless them to continue as they are.
      Well, i am older now and see things in a larger picture than i used to. I hope this makes some sense. 😄❤️🙌

    It is difficult to think that the very young and most innocent of humans can pay the price for the sins of the King of Egypt. However, the punishment was just, boys were killed by Pharaoh and his people so they were repaid for their wickedness by losing their own first born, but not by the hand of those they wronged but by the hand of God, the only just one. He did say "vengence is mine, I will repay".
    The death of any innocent is sad but death is the payment for sin.
    David experienced the same kind of judgement in this regard.
    Yes, and even for the Egyptians God made a way of escape which does reflect the goodness of God.

    With the Exodus story, an aspect is being neglected: Israel wasn’t meant to stay in Egypt; they were supposed to go back to the land of Canaan. By overstaying in Egypt they self inflicted their own oppression. This can be seen even after the Exodus when the Israelites wished they could be back in Egypt. You have to see the double edge of the Word of God: Egypt enslaved Israel because Israel had become slaves to Egypt. The plagues are punishment to Egypt. But how many Israelites died in the Exodus? You must see the judgement of God in all of its facets.

    Yes , i struggle with understanding the suffering later for those that came before and how God calls groups, cities, and countries are like they are persons who continue to exist in His mind...and who still await more judgment! Why do the many faithful suffer the consequences of evil societies? History is full of it and even now with the Ukraine. Another is some famous Christian leaders being so horrid, like Luther and Calvin. They were so beneficial yet so lacking in love and compassion. Galations 5 and 1Cor 13 gives such a stark comparison. Yet, God Himself, a just and merciful God, seems so unmerciful at times or seems to ignore horrors. All i can think is that i am not looking through God's window. I need to move and find the clearer window. I guess it keeps us searching and asking the Lord for answers. I know He says the rain falls on the just and unjust...and in the fulfiment of time and martyrs, the horror will end forever. God is not in a hurry like we are. Maybe He has not time...everything to him is now. This comment does not seem to make sense. I hope it does make sense to someone.

    I disagree that Jacob was a snake of a man. He was no more a snake than David, if you think about it. He worked hard and did not steal Rebecca. He was good to Leah and did not divorce her, poor girl. He loved Rebecca so much that he worked under the authority of a snake of a man for so many years with no hope of having a life of his own with her. He could have just run off with her, but he had incredible patience and came up with a great plan to use a man's greed to help him and his family break away from tyranny. God chose him, so could you scrub that phrase from your recording? People seem to relish calling him names. He blew it about his brother. His mother encouraged that deception probably alĺ his life. His brother was a pompous jerk at that time, too. Later, the Bible makes it clear that God chose Jacob for his own purposes. Did God participate in evil in that choice? Jacob was also humble, patient, respectful, and intelligent. He was not paid properly for all he did. I do not see that he actually harmed his father in law. His father in law was just using him, and after MANY years, it backfired. Jacob humbled himself to his brother and, yes, was rightfully scared, but probably gave back as much as he may have stolen in his deception...and God chose him, not his brother. Both had matured. All of our heroes with the One exception had flaws, but they were part of a bigger plan. All were loved and probably forgiven. Only God knows. Do we want to be labeled forever by our youthful indiscretions?

      That's an interesting take. We all are snakes at varying moments in our lives, we're imperfect. I think John and Tim know that. God uses imperfect people. However, asking creators to "scrub" their opinions just because you don't agree seems dictatorial, just like it would be dictatorial if they removed comments they didn't agree with. Respect the learning process by allowing exchange (especially when it's respectful). Plus, I don't think most Christians struggle with accepting that Jacob isn't a bad person, considering it's one of the most common male names today.

    Jacob is a snake of a man? Wow. Abraham must have been a very bad judge of character then because he gave his blessing to Jacob. In fact, the last thing he did before he slept the sleep of death was enumerate his blessings on Jacob. Abraham also reiterated to Rebecca that he chose Jacob instead of Esau. That's the reason why she and her younger son conspired to get Isaac's blessing. Not because he was a devious, snake of a man, but because it was his grandfather's wish. I guess I will have to go back and listen to the earlier podcast to understand why there is a thought that Adam was not in charge in creation immediately following Eve being created from Adam's rib. That's not how I understand the story though. It seems that the patriarchal structure was in place from the beginning and was not a function of the Fall.

    Hierarchical structures are inevitable. The moment God created anything, a hierarchy emerges: Creator > creature.
    Now, it is misguided to read Genesis 1 and say that humanity is the firstborn and leave it at that. In Genesis 2, Adam is clearly the firstborn. Adam is created first. Adam names the woman just as he named the animals.
    If you don’t like hierarchy, then you don’t like God’s creation. God establishes the hierarchy because His at the top.

      I think it’s fair to say that there is some hierarchy inherent in our reality, but I think we have to be careful with the sentiment on how that hierarchy functions. It’s dangerous to divorce the ideal of hierarchy from how god wants up to behave in it. The way God wants up to do is lift other above us in the system. Humans apart from that will clamor over each other in power grabs and backstabbing. Humans were never meant to claim the ladder for their own sake but help others climb it. We must never forget that.

      @@russellwilliams5065 The Divine Hierarchy is different from the world hierarchy. On that we agree.
      But there are aspects of life where hierarchy exist, cannot be revoked and must be upheld. One of those is the hierarchy of parents and children. Children must honor their parents. In a Christian marriage, the husband is the head. If a woman tries to become the head, she’d be going against God’s design. To assert the right order in relationships is good and loving. To oppose the right order in relationships is wrong and sinful.

      @@nelsoncamachotirado6967 yet there is still this missing component of selfless service that is a linchpin to the gospel. I am assuming you’re a man which conveniently puts you at the top of the hierarchy you just explained. That can create some blinders that make it hard for you to understand that the over focus on that hierarchy and how you fit into it could be causing harm. In order to be first you must be last. And to say if people are deviating from how you perceive things are sinners is dangerous language because our hum perspective is very narrow and instinctively molded by our culture. Selfless love takes priority over hierarchy in my humble opinion.

      Numbers 12:1-15 tells us that Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses. God was angry with them and spoke correction to them from a pillar of cloud. When the cloud had withdrawn from them, Miriam was leprous. Aaron begged Moses to not hold their sin against them. Moses cried out to the LORD for Miriam to be healed. She bore her shame for seven days then was recieved again.

Think about all the things that happened and how there was always a kind anger towards those doubtful of him and his power over all creation. We must think of GOD as our real loving father that always knows what will happen to us if we dont listen to his wise words.

    Alot of straw man arguements here, first the creation story has nothing with God elevating the least. Adam is the First of his kind not the last to come to a party or something. Created last doesnt demean them instead it shows Gods focus on humanity as hebrew said "to the son, he elevated above angels".

      They're not saying the creation story is only about God elevating the least, they're saying that God elevating the last (Adam is the first human, but humanity's the last thing created, that's what they're going for) is a theme that's been present since the beginning. They go in more detail how and why they came to these conclusions in an earlier episode. Their one-sentence claims that it was there is based on the assumption that you've been following the whole series and don't need a full recap.

    devious snake of a man??? you're out of your mind - he was one of the smartest men alive - Esau was a snake of a man - God loved Jacob butt (🤔) hated Esau ... Jacob was genius - he only offered his *hot soup* to his brother in exchange for an eternal blessing from God - free will- brilliant & then he obeyed his mother - a other good move - and then he was blessed like no other man has - it took awhile for Esau *the snake of a man* to calm down ... Jacob becomes Israel - brilliant I say

    • @samilede
      @samilede ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the point Tim and John are making was that Jacob didn't need to offer hot soup to Esau for the blessing - or do anything for the blessing for that matter - because God had already promised the blessing to Jacob and would have given it at the right time. However Jacob and his mother were impatient for Jacob to receive the blessing, so took advantage of Esau when he was in a vulnerable position (i.e. extremely hungry) to obtain the blessing. It wasn't a smart move on Jacob's behalf, it was a sneaky move.
