In 1806, Asantehene Osei Bonsu accused some of his subjects of grave robbing, and when they fled from Kumasi to Assin, the Fante Confederacy provided them refuge. Osei Bonsu, angered by this, sent envoys to the Fante state of Abura to address the issue, but they were murdered. In response, Osei Bonsu declared war, leading to the Ashanti sacking of Abura in May 1806.
