This is one of my favourite ABBA songs, it's just perfection and it deserved a good place in The Visitors. Sometimes I don't understand Benny's perception of their songs.
Neither do i.There were masterpieces that were 'left behind" such as 'One Man One woman" or even 'Move On" never been in any official ABBA GH collection neither in the MM films. Not to mention his objections on ''Just like That"....Hey Benny i won't forgive you but i'll love you forever.
@@alexioverdo5225 Since You've mentioned OMOW/MO.Let's not forget what happened to "If it wasn't for the nights".The single that never was.The track that never found some decent place in none of Abba's famous collections either.Could have easily been a double a sided single coupled with 'Chiquitita" at the time. Both excellent and diverse..
Great to see you back, Io, and I totally enjoyed your analysis of this moody and thoughtful ABBA song .. Admittedly, it's one I haven't given much attention to in the past, but your breakdown of the various individual components shed some new light and appreciation of it for me .. Particularly how technically and emotionally powerful Frida's vocal is .. Thank you !
Thank you I definitely missed doing this! Yeah, this is definitely shaping up to be one of my favorite Frida vocals. I think she was really feeling it when she recorded it. I wonder if she was disappointed it wasn’t on the album
@@popcornphilosopher Thanks, Io .. I'm going OK .. Could be a bit better in some areas, but overall I can't complain .. Definitely better for seeing your vids again.👍☺
Another great reaction from you - thanks! I've always loved this song and felt so sad that it wasn't on the album. But you're right that it might have been too close to When All Is Said and Done in terms of structure, sound etc. And ABBA always made very heterogenous albums, a little of this and a little of that. They never stuck to one sound og concept. So even though each album had a certain ambience, they were always inconsistent in terms of style, themes etc. So, in that regard, it was a very ABBA thing to do to put Two for the Price of One on the Visitors in stead of Should I Laugh or Cry, which in my opinion is a far better song. Hearing Frida's vocals on this song isolated is a really wild and wonderful thing.
Thank you! I was hoping y’all were going to like me reacting to the stems isolated! I’m real curious about the other albums. The visitors fit together so well but yeah, each song was its own universe. Voulez-Vous was underrated, but definitely sounded more like a collection of songs.
Wonderful, insightful and detailed (deep dive) reaction; more Abba please! Especially somewhat more obscure tracks like this. Kisses of Fire - what an underrated masterpiece, can you do that one? 🙏
There’s actually a new obscure one coming this week! Also, I did sort of kisses of Fire when I made a Voulez-Vous deep dive. I didn’t spend enough time on that song though th-cam.com/video/g4mVGwGIGmw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=u4baltOlC2xBgQBC
Great reaction and analysis. Frida had done story-telling before: Fernando; Money, money, money; One man, one woman; I wonder (departure) to take a few. In her solo career before and during the ABBA period she did loads of songs that were stories and with very good narrative in the Swedish language (sorry not in English but none the less more than great!). You have to take my word for it, said the Swede! 😉
lol. I believe you! Yes her, storytelling is my favorite part of her vocal delivery after the texture of her voice. I’m working on a video about her solo album right now too:)
Thx, The visitors album is one of the very first to be recorded, arranged and "transcribed" entirely digitally in their new studio. It is clean that benny and Michel tretow have experimented with the new capabilities of their equipment. Various effects are heard, vocoder without a dedicated device at the time via the mixer, we can hear it on "when all is said or done", a little more on, "Two for the price of one" and A lot present on, Under Attack. On some of the last tracks perhaps they also used an "autotune" effect, before its time.
@@popcornphilosopher, If I understood you correctly, you are talking about resonance "echoes", as if they were singing it in a room with a high ceiling, a hall, a cathedral. without sound insulation materials
By the way, I love the Large Marge clip. When I was a teenager way back in the mid-80s when Big Adventure came out, I worked in a movie theater which played it. I used to love going in and watching the audience reaction during that part. Everything about Big Adventure is sheer 80s brilliance.
That’s hilarious! I probably would’ve done that too! Kind of like how I like to watch people’s reaction to hereditary today. I might be a little sick lol. But I love. PW!BA!
It was only the picture disc edition One of Us where Should I laugh or cry that had the count in if I remember correctly. A great song, and well above You owe me one as a B side. And, the lyrics is typically ABBA grown up moodiness. Thanks
Well that's a rarity. This error exists only in a few copies pressed as far as i'm aware. Btw i also think that (at least lyricwise) SILOC's sequence was the Benny/Bjorn written song 'SLOWLY" that Frida recorded in 1984 but with Kristy Mc Coll instead of Agnetha since ABBA was over.Kristy did an excellent job in the backing vocals and her husband producer Steve Lillywhite did a fantastic production to the song made it sound like a respectful ABBA project. And ihmo far better than Gemini's version which i don't really connect despite being produced by B+B..Could have easily had a place in TV album if it was 3 years earlier.
@@6549Marci Hi Marci! So nice to hear from you! Well tastes can't always coincide,we all have our personal preferences, rightfully. It's human.😊Same goes for you....Gemini's i find it kinda 'cold" and "sharp-angled".Frida's feels warmer and more velvet to me. btw taking it a bit far from reality both 'Slowly" and 'Comfort Me" are tracks i fantasized being part/left out of 'TV" album. In my playlist to it i have excluded UOME and have stuck these 2some.(Just my twisted imagination, lol.)
Love your ABBA videos. You're so creative and on point. I prefer this song on The Visitors album rather than Two For The Price Of One. It's not a bad song, but it's an unwanted distraction. Aside from Super Trouper, none of the 80s songs featuring Frida as lead vocalist were released as singles. Not even When All Is Said And Done. Just a little note: fix the names in the description before some fans call you ignorant. Unfortunately, there are plenty of those among us.
Thank you so much! I try, haha. Yeah, it really does seem half-and-half who prefer this song or not! Thanks for the name btw. I filled it out without my glasses on lol
I'm in camp 'shoulda been on the album'. I've always felt that. I don't get Benny's assessment that it didn't have the same production values as the other Visitors songs. And yes, I think it could have easily replaced Two for the Price of One. Granted, that song kind of is a counter-balance to the darker tones of the Visitors, but it's also always been my least favorite of this collection. I think it's a brilliant song. It was eventually included as a 'bonus' track on a later remastered version of The Visitors which I think was a good idea. I also love You Owe Me One and I think that could have been included also.
I think it’s a case of they had an embarrassment of riches. They were just so good at this later date. although it took a long time for people to realize.it it seems. You owe me one is one of my favorites too! It’s surprised me that so many people don’t like it
I absolutely adore the verses of this song.... but the 'chorus'/middle 8/whatever always feels quite misplaced (musically even more than lyrically) It takes a very abrupt turn from intriguingly melodic to somewhat cheesy, predictable and cliched. But that's just to my ears. Personally I feel 'Cassandra' is a much stronger B-Side track from that time frame.... although recorded after 'The Visitors' had been released possibly. And I'm really glad that Frida's vocals having been getting the recognition for so long now... after them being relegated to second to Agnetha's in many listeners during the 70's 80's and 1990s by mant people
@@popcornphilosopher Erk... i suppose I do. But then I always felt Benny seemed more 'sonically involved' than Bjorn in creating the ABBA Sound. And while I adore Agnetha's voice, I always seem to appreciate the counter melodies that Frida provides in the A led tracks. The Difference in their voices is what makes ABBA.... (And to my ears some of the F led tracks still sound vocally 'fresh' and not defined to a particular decade performance technique/sound... god that makes me sound obsessive and pretentious!!!) I so respect that Frida was so lacking in ego that she never had a problem of Agnetha being favoured for the more 'Single Worthy' tracks... and actually preferred the freedom some more non conventional compositions gave in in finding new expressive ways to perform. Plus she never envied the OTT attention Agnetha got... and tried to be supportive when A felt low and depressed by how invasive it was At least from what I remember of Swedish Language interviews I read as a kid in the 80's when she was doing her solo stuff...
