      My wife has issues with what I spend in MTB, which compared to other ppl is peanuts. Our 3 kids and myself just have entry level bikes, which she thinks are expensive but she has no problem paying $215/month Cdn. on gymnastics for our daughter. It’s kinda weird.

    This discussion happened to me not with my friends but with My Wife. A few years back I said I want to ride a bike and got myself a GT aggressor from Sportchek and was super contented with it. Then a year after I told My Wife I want to ride my more on the trails and would need a dedicated bike for that so I got me another hardtail Trek Stache 7. It was better than my GT and had better parts/components plus I bought it from a local bikeshop and not at Sportchek. Then, I started watching, Bobo, BKXC, Seth bikehacks, Singletrack Sampler, Steadyspin and list goes on. So I had to talk to My Wife again and explain to her the advantages of having a Full suspension. After a year I then bought My first full-squish. A year after owning it and hoping that would be it. It did not stop there. I upgraded my cockpit, fork and rear shock and now contemplating on upgrading a new set of i9 hydra wheelset 🤦‍♂️
    Screw you MTB! 😅

    I suppose it's expensive in the same way eating healthy is expensive - it's relative to the value you place on the sport of Mt Biking. It doesn't have to be expensive however because you can mountain bike with a rigid frame (its what I did AND it's much cheaper) or, you can buy a good quality used bike. Mountain biking is ripe with bike envy and I often find newer riders somehow feel left out of the "Mt Bike Fun Club" when they don't drop a load of cash at their local shop. I live In Vancouver, BC and ride with people who love mountain biking more than me, and you'd be surprised of the spectrum of bikes they ride. Since you can get a good used quality mountain bike, don't let what you spend be what determines your fun. Just buy a bike, learn where you can ride it and where you CANT and just get out there and enjoy!

    I have found that hot rodding my Mustang costs less. Seriously, I just converted it to a coil-over front suspension with adjustable ride height all around. That's 2 struts, 2 shocks, four springs, adjustment hardware, spring isolators and the wrenches required to set the height. All for $825. For a car. A freakin' 3000+ pound car. And it's good stuff, well engineered with flawless workmanship. The fork and shock on my bicycle retailed for almost $1600. That's ridiculous. That's one of the reasons why I cancelled my new bike and decided to continue upgrading the car instead. I'm getting a hell of a lot more for my money that way and I will get a lot more for the car when (if) I decide to sell it than I ever would for a used up old mountain bike. I haven't quit biking, but from now on I will simply maintain the bike I have. No more new ones.

      Smart to cancel the bike and not fall for the hype. I ride a 26” bike that was on the curb as trash. Spent less than $10 on new cables. Tuned it up. I am always the leader when my group of friends ride trails even though I have the “worst” bike. They constantly wipe out and tear their expensive bikes up, and their bodies. Where none of that ever happens to me. A rider’s skill is the #1 most important variable. A lot of these new guys compensate for lack of riding skill by buying $5,000+ bikes 😂

    I have found that all sports that you truly enjoy have a price tag. MTB is no different, the good thing is that after initial investment you can (if you have self control) stay reasonable. With regular maintenance, your $2500 bike can be a 10+ year investment which is great. Where people get caught is thinking they always need to upgrade and have the latest and greatest. Now don't get me wrong, if you can afford it go for it!
    Clothes can be expensive, shop the end of year sales and buy 2 for 1
    make your Christmas list!
    Also you did forget Bike Transport
    Where I have truly come to grips with the cost of MTB is when I finally realized the Mental and Physical health benefits... In the long run it is way cheaper than a therapist!
    Happy Riding BOBO and keep it up

    I used to dh race in the late 90s early 00s. Just got back into riding after a 20 year break. Bought a "cheap" $600 felt ht 29er with cheap coil spring Suntour fork and x4 derailer. It is better than the high end stuff I used to ride back in the day. The fork has no useful adjustments but its perfectly durable and feels pretty good for what it is. The frame is great and the cheap mechanical disc brakes are killer. Even the cheap wheels are actually pretty good quality. All of these components would have been considered top of the line last time I rode. I can take this bike just about anywhere with confidence. Its all perspective and contrast. Younger people who haven't been around mountain bikes very long will say this bike sucks but it actually doesn't, its actually pretty damn good. I don't even feel the need to upgrade.

    $500 is like the bare minimum if you want to go hard and not hurt yourself. I'd bump it up to maybe $700 if you are hardcore enough to do some real entry to mid-level doubles as a beginner. A $300 Trek is fine if you only plan on it being a commuter, and just want to hit some XC trails in the flatlands, but those $200 gaps are a night and day difference if it's the only thing you know. Anything above $2500 is for pros and dentists in my opinion. I see bored rich houswives on $5000+ Pivots wearing spandex, I blow past them on my $500 Trek Marlin5 almost everytime wearing my construction work pants. The key is passion.

    Omg this such a true thing, even though i have many friends and acquaintances that make 70-100+k a year they can't understand even spending $2500 on a entry level full suspension mountain bike or $5000 for a really good bike. It wasn't until I did research that I understood why...that being said, I do think they are slightly over priced. But ya I am not going down a black diamond trail on a typical Walmart bike...(exception maybe being the Axum dp)

    • @Metalshark100
      @Metalshark100 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't understand why people think 1k+ is affordable for a bike when it's clearly really expensive. You can get really good mountain bikes for 400. My gt was around 350 on sale and it was really good for the price. For that price you get entry level forks with around 100mm of travel, amazing hydro brakes and a decent frame with wide handlebars. Sure you miss out on extras such as expensive drive trains and mechs but for around 400 you can definitely rip it on a trail.
