What I've learned from riding trails with my e-MTB friend is that e-MTB is really a separate sub-category of mountain biking. It is an entirely different experience, more akin to dirt biking. You can accelerate uphill and make short work of even the steepest climbs by tapping the enormous torque of the electric motors. The motor just changes the whole experience of a trail. It's not better or worse, just different. I personally am sticking with MTBs because I like the exercise and the lightness and simplicity of regular bikes.
I do exactly what you described. Ascended incredibly steep hills without dismounting, something a regular mtb would never even consider. You're definitely pouring a ton of energy, the motor is just an enabler to do something considered impossible for a regular mountain bike. You get the exercise if you push yourself to it. Hell, one downside, lugging the 50-60 pound bike around is plenty of exercise, helps your arms as well.
the thing is now they have the SL versions which are as light as a regular AL bike.. and you just... turn off the motor if you don't want to use it. It really is the future of biking.. it's like.. a derailer.. You don't have to switch gears, you can go up it in the hardest gear, but let's face it, you probably wont.. and you can get a good enough work out doing MORE laps an you'll get better at going downhill because you'll do it A LOT more.
@@Chrismzeller lmao, yeah I can see you now, telling all the pros that ride them to go to the moto trails... They are nothing like motox, so why do you want them off the MTB trails? Have you ever even ridden one?

Was riding with my grandpa who is in his 60's and that guy has always been a monster riding. We were doing a climb and we watched as this 70 year old woman blew past him not even breaking a sweat and I watched as every shred of confidence left as this woman on an e bike rode past him
I rode a friend's ebike last year. Holy smokes I felt like superman no joke. I flew up hills like they were nothing. I love my non ebike but now I would ride/buy an ebike. They are amazing.
I’ve been mountain biking since the beginning, over 20k dirt miles when I stopped counting… I’m 56 now and I’ve earned a little help on the uphills. I love my ebike. I get people every once in a while saying, “that’s cheating,” I tell them, “it’s not a race.”
At nearly 50 I still have no interest in riding an ebike. But I must say the coolest guys I’ve met recently have been on ebikes; even when I give them crap for being younger then me. While enduro dudes for sure have the cool factor, and XC guys are the “roadies” on dirt (that’s me), the “spirit of the trail” is something we should all have in common. No matter what you ride get out and do trail work, be cool to hikers, equestrians, and each other.
My wife and I are mid 50s and love the tough workout you get on a real mtb! For sure Ebikes have their place and much preferable to motorcycles on the trails as long as you can hear them coming!
@@yumyumbaboon My wife and I are also in our 50's. You can burn 1000 calories on an ebike and 1000 on a manual bike. I own both, but have found having control over my terrain greatly enhances that "REAL" bike experience you speak of. When the terrain controls me I don't get to as many new places, try as many new challenges nor have nearly as much fun, and at the end of the day that's what keeps us all riding. PS: Just curious, are "real" mtb riders with $12k+ carbon fiber bikes that weight 15lbs less than my $2k non-ebike really "real" mtb-ers too??? They seem to be "enhancing" their real bike experiences, just in a different ($$$) way.
I feel like I can do that without an e-bike too - I just get into the easiest gear, and pedal slow. That way I can get up almost any fire road without panting like a dog. I can hold a normal conversation with people on the climbs if we climb at that kind of pace, but having a 13kg XC bike might be helping with that a lot
Honestly, my E-MTB is the best thing that has happened to me in years! I gained a bunch of weight in the past few years and my Bike enables me to be active for so much longer! Where a normal bike would trigger my asthma or bring me to exhaustion after not even 10km, I’ll easily go 20-30km. It allows me to get out more, be in nature and most importantly: lose weight! Besides, getting out of the house at this time really helps me keep sane! What’s the point of exerting myself once or twice without assistance and then growing bored, if a little motorized assistance can keep me motivated to get out and move whenever the sun is shining? Can’t remember a day with good weather when I haven’t been out in the woods! If anything though, having switched to an e-bike I now respect people with manual bikes so much more for their physical fitness and perseverance!
Im assuming that you have lost enough weight to be in a somewhat healthy shape. That technically means that with a manual bike, a lot of sweating and pedaling up the nasty hills you could have the impressive physics you talked about. This is just a reminder, no judgement… feel free to ride your ebike if you’d like to tho
@@the_letti0584 That's not how it works. It's a fallacy that many fit people fall into. Ramping up your fitness is a hard process. Not just mentally, but if you overdo it, your body actually takes harm. So, getting into it slowly (i.e. through an e-bike) is a very good and healthy way to get fitter. Your whole "harder excercise = better results" is medically nonsense.
@@the_letti0584 I have an E-Mtb. I usually rode my non electric mtb a few times a month due to the 2hr trip to where the trails starts and there is a 1800ft elevation change to get to the trails. I am putting down the same power to the crank, but get there in half the time. Total time spent on the E-bike are higher since i ride a lot more. Its more fun covering more distance. E-Bikes are great. You can sweat just as much on an ebike, you just get to see twice as much scenery and vistas along the way.
Bought my first Specialized Turbo Levo in 2016. Huge proponent of Ebikes. Whether your buddy is on board or not... they are here to stay. Brings a smile to my face on every ride!!!!
I laughed so hard watching this!! I just got an ebike today. I LOVE IT! AS soon as I left the shop I planned on going home but I could not help myself, went so far along the ocean. It was awesome! There is no way I would have done that long ride on my old slow bike. My knees would have been shot and I would have been exhausted and it would taken me all day. I would ride my regular old heavy trail bike to the gym and I would be slowly struggling up a hill and an 85 year old lady would fly by me on an ebike. I knew I had to get one. My ego could not take it anymore 😆
I rode with an e-biker two days in a row, then met him for a third, longer ride .At the end of that day--a day where he waited for me a LOT--he told me, "Well, now I know where you're at physically. I know what shape you're in." And I haven't heard from him since. What, I'm in "can't keep up with a powered vehicle" shape? Of COURSE I cant keep up with you man! (Sorry...../rant)
@@Dziki_z_Lasu People have been racing mopeds for a long time. E-bikes aren't just mopeds though obviously and can be ridden no different than a normal bike if you choose.
@@bigcrackrock Who choose riding a heavy moped like a bicycle? Rather it is a nessesity for a dead battery situation, nothing more. E-bikes are terrible both as bicycles and mopeds, the only thing that gives them popularity is that they are treated as bicycles, so no road legality issues, bike paths and nature reserve riding.
E-bikes gave hope to all of us who are over 50 and wanted to experience again how wonderful MTB is. I am not ashamed when I go up and re-experience that incredible feeling of success conquering a top of a trail. excellent video!!!
Which is all great, but personally I feel it would feel even better accomplishing things without the need of a motorized bike at that age of 50. If I could re-experience that incredible feeling again at 50, then I'd want to do it under my own power. And If I can't accomplish all the same things at age 50 as I used to when I was 40 or 30 or 20, then I accept and respect that age is a factor.
I'm 66 y/o. As long as you have the right gearing, I see no need for an e-bike. Plus, how do the e-bike riders know if they are improving? Last year, I could do my favorite climb, while under my lactic threshold in 17:30. This year, I'm able to do it in 16:50. The e-bikers are missing out.
Exactly and it doesn't f****** matter if you had to exercise a little bit or a lot, the fact is you are enjoying yourself and getting exercise at the same time, and without an e-bike you wouldn't be able to do that experience at all. That's what it's about. If it was purely about exercising then biking is cheating in general because stationary bikes make you work harder, my point is it's not all about the exercise it's about the experience and while sure I wouldn't say you should bring a throttled e-bike and ride it around like a dirt bike, but if you are unable to pedal very hard, just using the pedal lightly for control and having the motor do most of the work and pedaling what you can when you can do it, it brings the capability of any trail nearby within your reach.
Had me laughing! "Is that a beer?!" LOL! Hilarious. I don't ride an eMTB but I don't have a problem with those who do. The day will come when I will likely need or want to. What I can't stand is the jerks that need to turn something this trivial into a culture war. My dad rides an eBike and if it weren't for that he wouldn't be riding at all. I applaud him for keeping at it at his age and anyone else who's still moving at a very experienced age!
So much this... I like the near heart-attack at steep climbs, where I live I need to plan my tour carefully to get that feeling. But the mom who has to get her groceries home after work may not share the sentiment, and there's no need for her to do so.
I worked at an e-bike shop for a couple years part time. Don't own one myself but I can definitely understand why people would want one. They eally help folks get out there more, not everyone has the time to be an athlete. Idk why some people let what others do bother them so much.

There will always be a place for regular pedal bikes, especially after a Coronal Mass Ejection hits earth and the grid goes down in the post apocalypse, but until then my ebike is on order for delivery next month. These things are the new boss of the urban commute, as well as the trails.

My worst experience with an e-bike on the trail was the time I felt like I was busting ass up this trail, sweating my ass off, out of breath, etc, and here comes e-bike man behind me not even breaking a sweat🤣
I can feel you. Totally. I’m riding regular up for 2k elevation gain locally. When I am sweeting my ass off, I just hear high pitch zzzz sound closing by fast from my back. My first reaction is, seriously? Why bother to even ride this hill up when you are on ebike? Anyway, it’s people option to choose whatever bike suit them most. If they don’t or can’t physically competent to ride that hill, it’s fine for them to ride ebike. They also like to enjoy the magnificent view like all of us do. I’ll continue the old and hard way to bike till my body no longer support it. Then, I’ll get an ebike to enjoy the nature. Peace ✌️
My girl and I, both in our fifties, would struggle up hills cursing and heaving while putting shit on the ebike cheats stopping only to manage our runaway heart rates when we heard some whippersnappers on analogues say that by the time you’re forty you’ve earned an ebike. We completed the trail, whinged about how fucked we were and went and ordered ebikes. We haven’t stopped grinning since. Those hills seem so less daunting and the downhills just as much fun. Plus the added juice gets us up and over the tough spots easier. Love my ebike.

I've slowly learned that most people who hate / are against e-bikes, are either secretly jealous and in denial, or are just selfish in general. Like the kinds of kids who got mad if you were also playing with the thing they wanted to play with. The type of kids who couldn't even share a basketball while on the playground. A bike is literally an inanimate object. It takes a lot of skill to hate something that doesn't do anything. Hate the rider, not the bike. If the person riding the bike is disrespectful of the trail, or other riders/hikers, then hate that rider, not the bike he chooses to ride. Because those types of riders are those types of riders regardless of what bike they are on. Riding a specific type of bike doesn't instantaneously and automatically make you a POS, the way you represent yourself while on the bike is what does, or doesn't make you a POS. Also, anyone who calls them a motorcycle/dirtbike has most likely never ridden a motorcycle OR an Ebike. Sure, there are some ebikes that are borderline motorcycles, and some that actually technically are motorcycles, but we are talking about e mountain bikes here, not e motor cycles. E mountain bikes are absolutely nowhere near a motorcycle.
It's not about the work out. I recently got an e bike, very pleased with it. Over 20 years I've cycled, only forty and never have I built up muscle or hardly any strength In the legs.im in reasonably good shape, but notice a huge difference, with a pedal bike out of breath feel exhausted all the time, knees are crying out in pain. More than I think they should be. Totally different on the e bike, after a ride my legs don't feel tired, and getting on and off is far easier. Not sure if I've just always had weak knees and legs. At least now they can have some time to heal or not be in pain all the time.
I did the same and lasted 2 rides with her before I decided to sell a nice guitar as well as my 2019 Trance Advanced 29er to buy a Trance E+ X Pro 29er. Been out on it five times now and had a blast. Best decision I’ve made in a long time.
As a roadie it hurts to be passed on a climb by someone not even breaking a sweat on their E-MTB but it makes it all the sweeter when I pass someone on an E-bike now
I got a beach cruiser a while back to chill around town with my Wife. I was out on an open road and saw a road biker ahead of me. It took everything I had but I mashed the pedals and cranked it up behind him to draft then went for a pass. His look was priceless even if it took everything out of me.

I use ebike for commuting and its soo good to be able to travel 20km a day and not feel more hungry or exhausted compated to car. At the same time low emissions and direct sunlight. But for geting out of the city, the dual sport motorcycle is just declassing ebikes.
@@fafnir-_-5526 Riding up hills is still hard! Definitely nowhere near as hard as on a regular bike but you are still putting in effort. As someone who just bought an Ebike (Orbea Rise) they are incredible. Superlight Ebikes are the way to go. At 46 years old I actually get a better workout on the Ebike because I can ride so much further and longer. I don't know about other Ebikes, but the Orbea Rise only starts working hard when you do, so it feels natural. Or rather, it feels like I'm 18 years old and 40 lbs lighter.
I started riding more when past 40. Doing 2-4 hour rides or 1 hour max effort rides these days. I looked into those ebikes like what Orbea does, but most of the time my speed is limited, by what is safe speed to ride so I decided against it. It is hard work getting into good shape, but once things start to click it feels great. On the roads it is perversely fun passing ebikers though as their speeds are limited to 25km/h in EU.
@@innocentiuslacrim2290 these Ebikes are not limited to speed, that’s just when the assist stops helping to keep it in its class of Ebike and legal in certain trails. The point of a bike like this is to punch up large elevations to enjoy the downhill trails. At least that’s what it’s done for me.

I’ve been mountain biking since the beginning, over 20k dirt miles when I stopped counting… I’m 56 now and I’ve earned a little help on the uphills.
I love my ebike.
I get people every once in a while saying, “that’s cheating,”
I tell them, “it’s not a race.”
Your missing out. DIY your present bike.
Haha, moped are fun but not for fitness
Amen! Great words!!!!!!
Never been easier to drink beers on the climb
🍻
Worth the price of an ebike just for that! 👊🏼
I feel like I can do that without an e-bike too - I just get into the easiest gear, and pedal slow. That way I can get up almost any fire road without panting like a dog. I can hold a normal conversation with people on the climbs if we climb at that kind of pace, but having a 13kg XC bike might be helping with that a lot
with that reason fat people will get even fatter on ebikes.
HAHAHAHA

That's not how it works.

Do you mean the funny 3 wheelers old people in UK drive? xD bro...
I rode with an e-biker two days in a row, then met him for a third, longer ride .At the end of that day--a day where he waited for me a LOT--he told me, "Well, now I know where you're at physically. @@bigcrackrock Who choose riding a heavy moped like a bicycle? Rather it is a nessesity for a dead battery situation, nothing more.
And If I can't accomplish all the same things at age 50 as I used to when I was 40 or 30 or 20, then I accept and respect that age is a factor.
hmm, I’m well over 50 and have no need of a motor…. 50 or 60 is not an excuse for being out of shape, barring of course injuries or illnesses…
But the mom who has to get her groceries home after work may not share the sentiment, and there's no need for her to do so.
ah I do, unless you're completely immobile and want to ride
I worked at an e-bike shop for a couple years part time. Don't own one myself but I can definitely understand why people would want one. They eally help folks get out there more, not everyone has the time to be an athlete. Idk why some people let what others do bother them so much.
And they really help destroying the environment faster. But hey at least now people can go mountainbiking with much less effort.

Love this sketch, you can see the hard work that has gone into this video ☺

It looks tempting, until i look at the price tags.
Looks tempting. You ride one you would justify selling a kidney.
Convert your own. It is easy.
@@colincampbell4261 that is exactly what I did. Am having the best rides of my life and without spending an arm and a leg. Ebikes rule!
Is this e-bike commercial? Because I'm hooked
Thanks man! You've done more on e-bike acceptance than the whole industry for an year!
I own both, and I still prefer my regular bike on the descents, but the e-bike is so much fun as well!
You gotta find a backpack that holds a bike so you can ride the ebike up the hill and then ride the MTB back down again
@@jamesordwayultralightpilot but where do I keep the e-bike on the downhill? don't know man... don't know...
"the best part? Being out of shape,.. and blowing past people who are in shape!" "gdamnit!" LMAO
I ebike due to a number of new and worsening disabilities, I love that it's a thing cos it's means i didn't have to give up riding yet and I can be more mobile around town without needing a gas guzzler!
oh man...keep these coming! 😂
this is the best!
thanks buddy!
Great video guys :D
When people pass me now I say," Does that thing have a motor?😂"
I'm surprised when people pass me and their not on an ebike.... I'm still an old school pedaler... - for now.
The biggest compliment you can get is when you fly past some old mountain biker on a climb and faintly hear the guy say "fucking e-bikes" without being on an e-bike.
@@diviscadilek1764 i would not call it a compliment, it just shows that you are the lazier one on the e-bike, yea its pretty cool, but it takes fun from the difficulty of that sport. People buy elektrobikes just because its easier, there is not other reason to buy e-bike. I hope that future of biking wont be just about elektrobikes.
@@nezmartykar6941 His comment said that he's not on an e-bike, but goes as fast as them
@@sampuhhupmas5666 oh yea i see, i thought he was reffering to that guy not being on e-bike, my mistake :)
Best video on TH-cam period
Exactly 🤘🏻
I have an 80 year old grandpa and I run highschool track. This video hits hard I have a hard time biking around town when trying to keep up with him
