    Most collectors, who pay top dollar, want a machine FULLY restored to like new condition. They want the machine to look like it just stepped out of that time period, not with all the wear and tear on it. However there are special cases where people prefer the machine to show its true age! Everyone has their own taste:)

    I found an old metal Dr Pepper sign in my Grandfather's old roadside shop. It was just sitting there just nailed up on the wall, unnoticed by old tenants and then by squatters for years. Even my dad didn't notice it til I pulled it off the wall. It still has its beautiful red color and virtually no rust. I wouldn't do a thing to fix it's imperfections. It's vintage look is part of it's charm.

    Sanding without a mask? Especially the body filler/bondo! A neighbor friend died from that crap. PUT ON A RESPIRATOR WHEN YOU SAND!! It doesn’t matter if you’re outside or not. You do outstanding work-I hope you continue to do it (you and your son) as long as you want to.

      The biggest issue would be eyes and breathing so they would use a respirator mask and safety goggles. Everybody else stays out of the way so no one accidently gets blasted. When he bends down to get the lower portion you can see they are using full face protection. It's also done outside so no issue with ventilation. Looks like they are very careful to do this safely.

      @@hastyraccoon7458 with that logic you can make a 1 to 1 replica of design from scratch/new materials and call it restoration. But it wouldn't make it original. If it were then what would be the point of ever restoring anything if you just recreate it using the original blueprints ?
      Having a machine what was created and assembled 70y ago and stood the test of time is like having piece of history.
      Having something that recreates the original look is like staring at photograph of that piece of history.

    I was born in '60, and so most of the machines from the forties and fifties were still around, mostly at gas stations. I loved the open the door and the bottle on rollers machine. Also, the one with the bottle or can dropping and you opened the door to get it. When they started putting cans in machines (and you still had bottles in machines all the through the '70's), it was ok because it was still made with Sugar and the cans were strong, made of a steel strength aluminum or a combination and the cans had a WELD. You could not crush these cans. They got SO COLD. When they changed to flimsy aluminum, the taste was also affected.
    Plastic? I don't think so.
    But I remember bottles for 15 cents in a machine (10 oz.) and in a store you could get a king Size bottle of Coke for a quarter. When the machines started charging a quarter we thought the world was ending!! Then in the mid '80's it was 50 cents and blah blah. Great video!!

This is no criticism of the skills of the restorers but for me this was a destructive restoration that rebuked the piece because of what i see as needles sandblasting and repainting. I’d never touch the paint on items like this unless there was major rust or damage. It destroys the ”story” and character. I would rather repaint, then distress and wear it to a similar look.

    Im doing the exact same thing with a 5 cent pepsi cola cooler vending machine. It has a Top lid that opens like a freezer. Definitely from the days where they trusted you would only take one for 5 cents instead of hands full 🤣🤣

    There's basically nothing original about the machine once they're done.

    • @SpearM3064
      @SpearM3064 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Wrong. It's still the original metal (except for any holes they had to fix). There's no such thing as "original rust" (the machine wasn't built with the rust, therefore the rust is not original). The only thing that's not original is the paint (which is the original color but probably not the exact chemical composition of the original paint) and the decals, which are of course reproductions. And of course part of the internal mechanism will probably have to be replaced, especially if you are converting it from bottles to cans. And in any case, the point of a restoration is to have it _look_ original, not _be_ original.

      He explained why they gutted the inside. The customer probably didn't want the machine to look old and beat up.
