I have drove them all, from the B-61, R Model and the DM's.The DM's, DM 600 and DM 800 were the toughest coal hauling trucks ever to hit the road back here in these mountains! Mack R models were all over South Florida hauling gravel. Johnny Sessa had 80 of them in single axle pulling a Freuhauf gravel trailer. I used to see them all the time growing up on my way to school on the bus. All the gravel companies used them because they were so tough. Gory Tile had a bunch that had a long bed with a conveyor boom and giant tires. They never seemed to break down or fall apart like other trucks which is why they were so popular.

How about the RS700L??? I spent seven years staring at a Bulldogs backside from coast to coast, you need to include some of the real gems. How about the tyrannies like the Duplex and the Triplex, you got to show your talent shifting a Triplex.

Weyerhaeuser had several B model Macks with R cabs. They were purchased in 1965 all used for log trucks Snoqulamie had 5 or 6 of therm as did White River. and Pee-Ell. Looking back, they had to be at the exact time of the change over. They had the B model butterfly hood and the rounded fenders. I think they were labeled B 81s. I got to drive a R600 with a quadraplex annd a 14 yard gravel box on it. Probably the best truck I ever drove until I got my '69 KW 923. The R cab was probably the finest truck Mack ever made especially for someone who was over 5'9". The DM series was a real mistake. I drove a 72 DM 800 and went back to my old 66 R cab for the comfort and reliability.

I still have a '69 R-686 Twin Screw Tractor than runs down the road... Best thing about Mack is mostly all of the parts Interchange... You have a truck you run and 2 or 3 in the Bone Yard out behind the Barn, you're gonna keep on trucking no matter what...

Noisiest truck I ever drove. Tractors were B-68 and B-61ST's. I bought my First R model in 1978 R686st and another in 79. The last Mack I bought was a CH back in 1990. IIRC, in the 70s/early 80s, the 300+ was rated at 300 horse. It had the silver dog. Many called the 285 a "300" but had the gold dog. That's how you could tell the difference.

I Learned on a Triplex MACK back in the 80'S, and a Duplex Mack tractor, if you can driver them you drive anything !😁 Now the trucks can pretty muck drive themselves ! and now they have automatics & the 18 speed transmissions took over the grilled & duplex transmission which made it much easier to drive. What would the New school drivers have done if they had to drive them for a living Now !😶😶😶 They would be lost. I know , because I drove everything out there. Don't get me wrong, I Love the air ride instead of spring ride and the 18 speed, But I still Lover the R model Macks, Once in awhile !😁😁

  • @bertgrau9246

The U model was offset to make it a great city delivery/pick up type truck. With the cab offset it was easier watch the trailer as you were backing.
The RL meant it had an aluminum frame to save weight , the RS was a steel frame.
The high torque low RPM engines were advertised as coming out in 1967, I drove a 1966 R model that had the new engine, and talked to a few others that said they also drove a 66, that had the new engine as well. The one I drove had the 237 horsepower, and I could run circles around a 250 Cummins, and 238 Detroit.
Got to admit, nothing sounds like the old 2 stroke Detroit's .
