    Hello Shelby, I believe that the opening in the back will slip over a nail that is in the wall. I think that they would be well supported and hang flush with the wall. It is nice to see all the different versions and I am confidant that you will learn how to fix the cracking issue. We all can be hard on ourselves when things do not react the way we expect, but this is how we grow. Thanks for the hard work you do for these videos and for taking us along on the journey.

      As someone that has the 3 flying ducks on the wall this is exactly how you hang them. You hammer a nail or put a screw into the wall and then the little round hole slips over the end of the screw/nail so they are flush to the wall. I also think there is a special type of hook you can get to hang them from drywall.

    • @someonedifferent198
      @someonedifferent198 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Was thinking the same thing, a nail or a hook are often used to hang something like that "invisible". Sadly not a potter so no advise about the cracking. The birds are very cute though!!

    Shelby I used to pour these you need to pour much lighter drain sooner the head to wing crack is possibly an air gap in the head but mostly due to head being full. Then get the mold open to set up and then add wing when it is formed wings also need to drain and poke a hole into the body where they join.

  • @LoveMeCeramics
    @LoveMeCeramics ปีที่แล้ว +92

    I have some roosters that hang the same way…all you need is to tap a nail angled upwards and they will sit flush on the wall. I’m restarting my grandmother’s ceramic business and absolutely love watching your mistakes and experiences with your work! You give me confidence that everything will be okay and I will make my grandmother proud. Thank you Shelby! ❤

  • @JulieRansom
    @JulieRansom ปีที่แล้ว +17

    I think the cracking problem could be fixed by taking the birds out of the molds sooner. If too much shrinking occurs while the clay is in the mold and part of the mold interferes with the clay's ability to shrink without being stressed it could result in cracking (especially in that curve where the wing attaches to the body). I also slip cast and have found that that usually solves the problem. Good luck!

      I’d use it as a nail hole as well. If the angle isn’t quite right, you can use nano tape-that double sided silicone tape. That way you can secure it at whatever angle you want.

    I know you weren't too happy with these, but I think they're fantastic! I love the vintage flying birds. I'm not a slipcaster but I do work with clay... I think you're right that there's some sort of tension causing the cracking. I wonder if just taking some extra time to compress the spot would help. That or maybe adding a bit of extra clay in the spot to support it. As for the hanging, maybe a couple of holes on the back that you could string a wire through? Just suggestions! Love the video, as usual, especially your commentary at the end when trying to hang the birds. You're an expert at the "Australian No".😆

      I agree with the notion of reinforcing the hanging method. Adding a hanger with more options for angles and direction will give you lots of choices and the confidence that all of your hard (hard!) work won’t come crashing to the floor! Like other commenters I had to google up some photos and the pics show the pink as very vibrant. You’ll get the glaze right. Test tiles may be the ticket since the birds are so so delicate?

    I love the way the birds turned out! The pink and gray is a wonderful color combination🥰 I wonder if you put a little bit of slip on the area that tends to crack before glazing if that would help with the cracking issue in that spot😳 what do you think? Do you want to try one?😃🩷💐🌷🌻🍒🍦

  • @micah06v8
    @micah06v8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think what may help with the cracking is when you're letting them get to leather hard, have them dry more slowly. That spot is really thin compared to the rest of the piece. I think it may be drying too quickly, but not enough to where it's cracking before you fire it; but it's introducing enough stress so that it cracks when you do fire it.

Now I'm guessing there were originally three of them? The galahs are divine, now I want a set for my dad to go with his kookaburra that he hung on his front door (I believe the hole in the back sits over any hook or nail, from memory). The Galahs are sooo cute!! I think if you play with the mold some more and you figure out how to keep the cracks from happening, then you are going to have a very popular item for your store. Most Aussie I have met simply love Galahs. I have heard they are really sweet and beautiful birds and are good for keeping creepy crawlies from your gardens. The cutest birds we have in Arizona are Cactus Wrens and even they are kinda plain compared to Galahs. Hope you are able to fiddle with them to make them work.

I tried search 3 flying birds cockatoo mould) that probably has that mould themselves ? I have never seen a Galah, I love your enthusiasm for Australian nature. The brighter ones remind me of flamingo tourist pottery from the 1960’s. Not necessarily nature accurate, but a beautiful decor addition. The trio of primary colors are my favorite and could see them in nursery design with primary colors. I would not allow the crack to dim your enthusiasm for these, painting them to match their real counterparts can be a work in progress. Beautiful galahs! If I were you I would compress the clay around that cracking area after removing the mould. Whilst moving them before bisque they should be kept very supported. The neck will act like a hinge as the head pulls down away from the body. Any cracks you did get could be reinforced with a tiny bit of clear UV resin and a UV torch. They are just so lovely. We get flocks of galahs here in Canberra... I love watching them chatter together.

    Oh, I love them! ❤ The blue one is so pretty. My mom used to use Sticky Tack (idk if that's the same as Blue Tack?) in addition to picture hooks on some of the porcelain decorations she hung in our stairway and they hung for like decades lol.

    I love the yellow as it looks like an antique. The cracking is minimal and only you noticed it. The hole is for a nail. You could also use dry wall hooks, they are also called monkey hooks that should work w the holes.😊

    Hi Shelby, another hanging option you could try is using two part epoxy to attach a wire loop or metal picture hook of sorts on the back of the finished piece. I have made slate engraved plaques at an engraving shop, and we would use that method and works well. Good luck! ❤ I absolutely adore you and your work!

    These are super cute. For hanging - Not sure if they are available in Australia but here we have command adhesive. The Velcro kind are all I use to hang stuff on my walls now. They hold up heavy picture frames, are easy to adjust, and come off cleanly when you are done.

    Silicone is a very strong adhesive that is excellent to attach non porous material to each other. I have used it to glue glass to glass and pottery to bowling balls for garden globes. It’s the stuff you use with aquariums. It’s waterproof and stays flexible.
    I think you can attach something to the back of the birds with it.

    I absolutely love these! We had a Galah when I lived in Australia in the 80’s. I would absolutely buy a set of these so I could have a little bit of home!

    Awww..I love your galahs so much..even the funky plain coloured ones..
    I remember my Nanna had ceramics on her walls..she had these decorative brass wide hooks.. they were strong..some others were black coloured. I'll see if I can find some...❤❤❤

    I have a daughter who would go INSANE to have these, she LOVES birds, especially Australian birds. They are gorgeous! If you can't work out hooks you could just stick command strips on the back, the ones with the hook and loop, I have heaps of things stuck to my walls via that method

    What a perfect mould for you! As a workaround I'd use command strips or try hanging them by putting the hole directly over a nail in the wall. I love galahs!

    I agree. I think the hole is to allow it to hang on a nail. It looks like it should be mounted on a wall.
