    is this gun modeled after a specific historical example? I haven't read much about matchlock pistols before, very neat!

    Wow what a beautiful project and what a beautiful gun. It's amazing. How much black powder is needed and is it a lead or steel balls it shoots? Also does it kick much? Beautiful gun by the way. It looks period correct too. The kind of gun I would be proud to put it on display.

    Sir, I am no gun expert, but you should probably put the lit fuse on last.

    This looks even simpler than matchlocks with a pan on the side. Why do you even need the pan on the side? This gun only needs a closing lid so it is safer.
    By the way, how much is the diameter of that primer hole, 2mm ?

    • @morecannonfab
      @morecannonfab  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think I made it 3/32"

    • @Scout887
      @Scout887 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@morecannonfab Thanks for responding, i estimated 2mm, so its almost the same.
      I know that it is not recommended to load a muzzleloader with modern gunpowder (NC-Powder) but would it work safely when you just load it with much less nc-powder? Or still dangerous? Lets say you load as much as a subsonic modern round has? Or does modern powder need bullet casing?

    • @Hetschoter
      @Hetschoter 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Scout887 the pan is for historical authenticity. If you are concerned more with safety than historical authenticity, maybe switch to percussion primer.
      To the question of propellant, from what I know the main difference would be peak pressure ie. what is the maximum pressure that the propellant creates over the time of its expansion (explosion). So equivalent amount of smokeless powder to the same amount of black powder by overall pressure generated, would stress the barrel more since black powder would generate the same amount of pressure more gradually. Unless you have modern muzzleloader, it potentially might be, since the previous use of the firearm might have already affected the structure of the barrel. If it was made in the last +-100 years, I have no idea. As a rule of thumb, black powder into gun designed for black powder. If you want to be more specific than that, I can't help you, unfortunately.
      About the casing. Modern guns are designed around the use of certain brass casings, so without it the gun would be (I think) potentially unsafe. The casing itself is not some magical part that the gun necessarily needs, if it is designed to withstand the pressure without it.

      I had to replace the buttplate screws on a Savage Arms .22 lr single shtr carbine and on a .22 WMR Henry Repeating Arms lever gun because they came from the factory with phillips head screws. I could only find slot heads in stainless steel at ACE Hardware, but they sure do look more period than phillips. I am sure these manufacturers could easily use slotted heads. They should be ashamed of themselves.

  • @marcellabutay1090

    Is it basically a matchlock except the black powder is placed somewhere different?

    • @morecannonfab
      @morecannonfab  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      A matchlock has a more complicated mechanism for moving the match cord to the ignition tray. A serpentine has a simple "S" shaped bar, hence the name. The locks for matchlock pistols & rifles were made by locksmiths which is why they are called locks.

    • @wildrangeringreen
      @wildrangeringreen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The trigger and serpentine are one piece, and it has a hole drilled in the middle somewhere for the pivot pin, not difficult to understand this one. The "jaw" for the match looks to be a threaded coupler, with a slot filed into it to hold the match, affixed to the serpentine with threads at the end of the rod.

      Then the former prime minister of Japan is murdered in broad daylight by a "black powder" DIY gun made from hardware store parts. No gun control can prevent a determined criminal. Although having proper awareness of guns and good security detail does.
