Hope ya'll like the end. A quick correction! The prescription lenses are actually magnetic! So.. if you need a prescription change you just swap out the magnetic lens part. NOICE. Discord.gg/thrill
Glad you share what you know and how you feel. Never liked people trying to market out of their niche when that audience cant support it. I do think you could take at least 1 penny for playtesting lol ;)
@@HeckinDoga Don't think so. In my Quest 2 I have magnetic prescription inserts. If I wear the headset with my glasses my eyes are a good distance away from the lenses. If I wear it without the glasses and use the inserts instead I can reduce that distance. I can't use the headset without inserts or glasses, so I really have no comparison to using it all by itself. But I don't think leaving the inserts out does very much to the FOV.
i had a friend who was playing on my quest 1 in 2019 and he tried to reach up to grab something in superhot, and he knocked the headset off his head and broke it. i don’t see that happening with a headset like this one
@@eaaeeeea You're so right... I'm not a gamer. I'm here because I want to replace the 4 monitors I use for work... This headset starts to entice consumers like me who want something comfortable enough to wear for a long time (both in weight and for feel and vision), has high resolution, and a high fov so I can use my peripheral vision to quickly glance without moving my head.... Hopefully this headset unlocks a new market allowing them to invest further in the tech and produce it cheaper... Consumers like me would easily spend an extra $1-2k for a headset that we use everyday for long periods of time and is attached to our income.
I was waiting for this. I really can't befriend myself with the Quest 2 I've bought, it's so damn uncomfortable. Literally getting head pain after 30 minutes and so my whole VR experience becomes bad. I still had some fun though.
I NEED THIS IN MY LIFE SO BAD...I play Bigscreen like twice a week and the index definitely weights on you while watching movies. Really cool to see a company I love making a headset that has been needed for along time!
Imagine how much lighter this is going to be doing all of the weird and crazy stuff that you do in VRChat, and you won't need like a chin strap anymore LOL. Like even with the cable, it's gotta be less weird while being upside down or something.
@@DrElemayo that's what i'm thinking you can feel the weight of the index when you are swinging around and stuff too, something like this AND wireless would be a godsend
more than even things like eye strain the shear weight of most headsets is what keeps me from playing for extended periods of time. You can really feel like your heads gonna fall off after playing anything intense so I can only imagine what it’s like for you when recording lmao.
i would suggest if you are using it solely for watching movies to instead get a pair of Nreal air glasses. they are much lighter and only half the price,
Yup, I think this kind of service is the future for VR. Prescription lenses and form fit to your face? It just makes sense. "Early" VR headsets were often expected to be shown off to friends and family because it's so cool and novel, but this really seems like a device made just for you.
They're also able to be tried in vr arcades and such, which is a big factor for people who were initially worried about motion sickness, but now that exists it's not as important
Innovative in the sense that it has 0 resale value because it has fixed IPD. They literally just cut out all the parts they could.. so you end up with a cheap 3d printed housing with displays and lenses.
Good job, that's how they get all your most important biometrics without having to ask for them ! you pay mostly with data that is so important you don't even start to get how and why.
I feel like if the FOV was pushed a little bit further, maybe closer to 100°-115° FOV, as well as the ability to add custom inputs like eye tracking and face tracking (in the future, definitely not rn). This could be the start to an amazing way to make headsets. Edit: Told ya.. FOV was increased to around 105°
I'm hoping that that is part of their under promise marketing strategy. I'm personally more satisfied that they cosidered resale of the device. Being able to go through all of their services but not buy a actual headset is a win in my books. But the more expensive that is, the less valuable the actual headset becomes, so it HAS to be balanced to succeed.
@@jacklesmithda3rd502 Well.. considering this is a newer project, and a newer concept too, just hoping this will lead to some really cool innovations in the VR market doesn't sound like complaining to me.
Yeah as long as you can order facial interfaces and lenses separately, I think this is a really awesome addition to the market. Most VR people are going to be enthusiasts who want the perfect custom solution, and often will ALSO have a standard solution like Index or Quest to introduce others to VR, so it really mostly applies to reselling, but also if you want one of these custom headests for multiple regular users, then you could just swap in and out your custom pieces as necessary, plus the modular nature of it gives room for tinkerers to make their own custom gaskets or whatever. Best displays in the space and a custom fit I think are BIG selling points even without those other considerations. The only thing that I would want in addition would be eye tracking for foveated rendering but also focus-based depth of field. Oh and wireless would be good, maybe through the use of a battery pack headstrap / wireless combo unit, to balance the weight and maintain that modularity
The IPD is fixed per unit during manufacturing, so even though you can swap face molds and lenses, it would still be unusable if a person's IPD is too far off from that of the unit. Some people are really sensitive to IPD differences.
@@EmblemParade ooh youre right, by the time I had formed my opinion, that part had flown over my head. That certainly makes reselling less convenient than I had first imagined, I mean I guess you could sell them WITH the IPD value listed, and trust that people would do so accurately and truthfully, and that buyers would know theirs and look for one that matches... I guess in my head the IPD was "adjustable maybe with a set screw but pre-set from factory to match your scan", which obviously there is no basis for. I still think this is a cool and good product, and I don't think resale potential should have too strong a bearing on that fact, but it certainly is A consideration that I had mis-considered, thanks for clarifying the point that I missed :)
@@WilliumBobCole Yeah, I was also disappointed to learn that. I think they went too far on this. Would it really make the HMD much bigger if they added IPD adjustment? It seems that quite a few smallish HMDs can do it. So, yeah, at the end of the day this is really a "made for one person" product.
I'm glad you're able to replace the lenses. I was thinking it's not only made just for you, it's made just for you today. I spent 20 years with my eyes changing prescription every year.
i agree i own a quest but letting someone try out on a 300 dollar headset vs 1000-2000 is simple id probably never let anyone other than me use it at 1000 bucks
@@SlegiarDryke I wouldn't care about audio, especially for pc vr. Actually, if it makes it any noticably lighter, cheaper, smaller, I'd rather it have none. With such small headset, can then pick whatever audio I want, speakers, earplugs or my favorite pc headset.
This is the move. I did not expect to see this much quality in such a tiny form headset arriving so soon, and it's the most cyberpunk looking headset we've had yet.
That's really damn cool that they're taking notes from an actual VR user and enthusiast with tons of hours, who knows their stuff and what the community wants
@@Nobody-Nowhere Good. Resellers are a cancer to the world. Not the ones that genuinely want to resell a product they no longer use, but the ones that buy the product for the purpose of reselling it at a way higher price while it's out of stock.
@@Nobody-Nowhere Dude, you just say "Scan your own replacement in the app for 50-100 (or whatever) bucks" and knock that off the price of resale. It's not *that* big a deal if I understand right. He certainly popped the foam off enough. I'm assuming the lenses aren't too hard either, but if they are then that would be the stick. But given they custom make each of them, I don't know that they would make it hard to pop lenses in.
As someone with a full index setup and 4 base stations this has me totally excited! The bulkyness and weight of the index hmd has always been my biggest complaint about it and to think I could get something like this is amazing!
My suggestion for the company: Make the device modular, so some components can be resold and make it so that that only the parts that needs your measurements are needed and can be swapped on the fly. Decrease the price for the headset as time goes on, to make it more widespread and attractive to regular consumers. Also make the service which requires custom facial measurements separate as well, because our facial shape will change over time and eye prescriptions also change over time.
I hope this product is successful, but I also hope it has good customer support and sustained long-term development, thing about the Index is that it actually has been a viable option for several years and has aged better than many of it's contemporaries.
This thing is gonna truly push the boundary for PCVR headsets, and I'm totally here for it. Personally it'll be out of my price range or feature preferences to matter to me in this current iteration, but I'd love to see this with a slightest extra bulk later on wherein it's then capable of working with inside-out tracking exclusively for PCVR. Overall I'm supremely looking forward to future headsets aiming for this kind of form factor. All of you with Indexes that have been hungry for an HMD replacement are probably all ready to hop in though, which is amazing. Good point on "why tf do they need to be so bulky if it's just for the PC?" lol
Honestly in the case of stuff like the index, for pushing the lenses back for space for glasses, makes sense why its so bulky. then again you can just add glasses spacers so its whatever. hope valve makes a index 2 soon, because we really need it.
I just assumed bulky headsets were just bulky for the sake of being relatively new tech when VR started. Today is different. Most companies that have ben developing VR know what their doing, so now comes the wave of smaller form factor HMDs
The custom lenses and facial interfaces is actually a really cool idea, most VR headsets end up crushing my nose unless I raise them so high that the focus is terrible, and I can imagine Bigscreen could get the manufacturing process down to the same price as a 3d party interface for current headsets. Really excited to see how this one goes!
that is my number one feature for any new headset. I care about FOV, colours/dynamic range/resolution in that order. You can easily adapt to lower resolution. You just forget after a while. Limited dynamics with some cheaper screens, yeah that does bother you pretty much all the time. OLED would remove that issue and then the FOV is just such a massive game changer. I just want to sit in a virtual cinema, watch netflix, disney, amazon video etc. and never have to turn my head left and right to see what's going on the screen which I have to do rn with the quest 2 and I hate it.
These are the types of breakthroughs I want to see in VR. Big niche items that pay for the research and move the needle further into the green zone of awesome for all!
I'm gonna be honest, it doesnt have any of the stuff i've been excited about (eye trakcing & wireless), but this is probably the first PCVR heads4et i've been very interested in for a looong time. I could see it being my daily driver and switch to my other headsets whenever i want eye tracking or wireless. I'll be looking forward to more info and news about it from you
I think this product is on the correct track. Just leave the computation and rendering load to the PC/console and let the VR glasses do its own job, which is to deliver good quality images. single cable to powering, light-weight design, I cannot say how much I love it.
The custom foam is a great idea, and I can't wait to see it developed further. Sadly, I'll have to wait until there is a wireless/inside out tracking solution. Living in a very small apartment makes VR difficult at times
You can mount base stations above eye level as I've garnered, some people have high wall mounted or even ceiling mounted setups. But I get what you mean. Living in a tiny space is just a pain some days.
@@drewpatterson8009 I would much rather sacrifice being able to share a VR headset for a perfectly fitted and comfortable headset that fits my prescription (no more wearing glasses or contacts in VR). I always have the Valve Index for sharing, on the very rare occasions that I would.
@@graphite7898 plus i'm sure there's nothing stopping them from selling a totally generic face foam which you could put on for other people, that or people will make them themselves
This is exactly what I’ve been waiting for. My biggest issue is I’m too lazy for VR. Normal VR headsets are too big and it feels slightly suffocating to put on. Once I put it on it’s worth it but it is simply un-motivating, it’s rare that I feel the need to go into VR... I want something light that makes the transition into VR easy. I want it it be like when you sit down in ur chair and turn on ur pc monitor. Putting on a normal VR headset feels like ur getting geared up. Putting on a super lightweight and small headset that fits ur face is perfect for me.
I used to think that too but the Quest 2 with air link is basically what you are wanting lol. I just put it on my head like some headphones and start playing right away. No wires, no setting up, no nothing.
This is genuinely sick, it solves so many issues with headsets, their size, displays, and overall comfort. I kinda wish it had onboard tracking cameras, but honestly, I can see this being a community-made addon, like with the Index wireless kit. This also gives me Ghost in the Shell vibes, and if I ever got one and was able to somehow add passthrough to it, I'd be wearing it around everywhere I go.
Didn't know about the Index wireless kit. Thanks! Now I know! :) Makes the Bigscreen Beyond VR-headset look even more promising now, because of the chance to get wireless for it.
So happy that a company is still pushing for PCVR! I still have a Rift S from years ago, but can't justify $1k for the Index as it's so old, but also don't feel like going for a more slight upgrade. This seems like enough of an upgrade to get me excited! Hope it turns out great. Also hope they make a bundle with trackers and controllers as well eventually.
This is super exciting. I have a pretty feature rich headset with the Vive Pro Eye complete with face tracking and wireless, so I don't really want to loose those features, but the idea of custom face interface and better optics is amazing. Mostly I'm just happy to see a new player enter the VR hardware space, and with such a well thought out product to. Fingers crossed it goes really well, and we see future products from them that add more of those missing features.
I've been saying people have undervalued contrast in headsets for a long time, it's good to see a company that understands this and sharing it with others ☺️
they do listen to feedback, in my experience. i asked for (and perhaps others did too) a dimmer switch in BigScreenVR and they eventually implemented it
It is so good to know that there's actually people focusing specifically on PCVR. When you get it, can you tell us if it can use the same base stations used for FBT? By that, I mean can FBT and the headset share base stations. And sleeping can finally be comfortable!
The basestations don't track anything. They're just consistent reference points that the trackers, controllers, and hmd can use to track themselves. There is a reason the system is called "lighthouse".
This is absolutely awesome. This is exactly the kind of thing I want. Extremely light weight. Extremely comfortable. Extremely compelling image. Let my PC do all the work like it was built for. This is the first VR headset that makes me think the dream of ditching all my monitors and working from home using a virtual desktop is legitimately possible and even desirable. My 3 monitor setup was easily about 1k. So spending 1k to replace 3 monitors with infinite monitors is pretty compelling.
I replaced 3 monitors with one 49" super-ultrawide and that is already a huge improvement having one seamless space, I would never want to go back to multiple monitors. A virtual desktop would be an amazing next step as well one day but I do worry about staring at something so near to my eyes so long/regularly.
I just got a 42’ monitor for the new PC that’s at least gonna do the job of 2. I’ll have one of my old 27" turned sideways for chat info stuff. I’d never thought of doing a VR setup to replace it. 🤔
Wow. This is huge! Great video. Your contributions to VR will go down in history! Thank you for making this headset even better and for sharing it! Great job on keeping the secret, that must have been so hard! I would love to get one...when I can afford one in a few years
For me, this is almost perfect. If they were ever able to add good wireless to something like this. It would be my dream headset. I think the closest thing would be the shiftall meganex.
I'm here for this. Incredible, this might be the first one I can really use comfortably. And insane content quality. If this were about 300-400 I would insta buy it
It will probably never be that, they have to custom make it to your eyes and your face, mass manufacturing costs less but with this you can't mass manufacture because it has to be custom made for, YOU. Not a wide range of people. They could make this kind of headset with adjustable ipd and a standard face plate, but that would remove what makes it special. In my opinion, there is almost no way to lower this to anywhere near $500 or lower.
No, i don't like what he is doing, this is worst then facebook that's how they get all your most important biometrics without having to ask for them ! you pay mostly with data that is so important you don't even start to get how and why.
That is sick! Wish someone offered someone like this that did native head tracking for us sim racers that don't need the hand controls or movement just really tilt and looking around.
You are such a VR enthusiast, it is adorable and really a delight to watch your videos. It´s just sad that VR is such an expensive hobby. It is funny that you never used Bigscreen with the Bigscreen Screen :D
If I had a bunch more money, I would be excited, yes. This looks like they stuck to the basics, and MASTERED them. And like you were hinting, I think this will make a great platform upon which to build a more advanced set-up. Regarding face tracking modules, I think you'd be better off sourcing a custom face mask or face shield to anchor the modules to. There doesn't seem to be much on the headset to attach things too. The face mask thing could also serve to mount other things like alternate tracking solutions for those without light houses. I think an external, inward facing camera based tracker would be a good alternative. Just place lightweight optical targets on the mask for the camera(s) to track.
I think the weight reduction will be huge. A major challenge of mine is how all headsets sag just enough to distort my image. It always looks best when I hold it myself. The only workaround has been tighter straps, which is of course uncomfortable
Love what they've done with this headset, focusing on size, comfort, and overall usability. Sure, face/eye tracking would've been nice but most of the time I don't think that'd be useful. In a sense it feels like they've kept the essentials and just made them REALLY good. Looking forward to this thing actually launching! By the way: seems like the outro music link in your description is broken, it's such a bop but can't find the original :/
Holy crap this seems like the perfect headset. Though id also love to hear your opinions on the "high-end audio" strap if you've had your hands on one or at least when you get to do the full review. All I hope is for Valve to have the index controllers in stock when it comes out
This looks absolutely wild. I really hope this comes with an eye tracking module in the future, so that we can use this headset with foveated rendering. Once we reach this resolution, I feel like foveated rendering is almost a necessity.
I love this video. It's so nice to hear some good news about VR after the repeated disappointments lately. This is probably the most excited I've seen you get about a VR product. Super cool that you were able to give them input on the production as well! I can't wait till this form factor comes to non-Index migrants in a way that makes more financial sense.
Just keep his bonelabs hype in mind. This headset has several drawbacks i didn't notice him talk about. I would also look at sadly its Bradley's video on this headset.
@@ltcuddles685 I am too waiting for more information on the actual drawbacks once it releases, however I don't see how Bonelabs can be compared in anyway to this. Once it a piece of hardware and the other a video game, it isn't really comparable situations.
Definitely keeping an eye on this. I went from a Quest 2 to an Index and it felt like a massive upgrade in everything except the lens glare, black level, and resolution. This would be a nice step up from there.
What about the quest 2 did u notice was a genuine upgrade when going to the index? I own both a quest 2 and quest pro and I don't see how a index could be a upgrade from my quest pro
I was thinking the same thing. My dad and my grandpa both started with 20/20 vision that has slower degraded, my dad needs reading glasses now and my gramps has a genuine prescription. Maybe you can send it in and they will replace it with a small fee or smt
I love seeing all this new hardware coming out that just gets better and better, it’s just so incredible to me, especially when I consider how much further we can take things. Of course, there is also a twinge of sadness when I also realize how much I will never be able to afford most of this comfortably :,)
This will probably be what I’ll get as an upgrade to my Quest 2. Might as well go all out and get some custom IEMs to go with it too. The projected retail price of $1,000 is about what I expected …
@@drewpatterson8009 Most people that would get this already have that stuff from an index setup or vive. Honestly compared to an index ($500) or vive pro 2 ($800) it is worth it.
I like working on 3d sculpting on my quest over pcvr. This would be perfect for that. I could sculpt for so much longer without the strain that eventually comes with the quest. It was also cool seeing the shots of the pre production models and recognizing that they're resin printing the prototype parts. Unfortunately $1000 without controllers and base stations is well out of my price range and probably will be for the foreseeable future. Hopefully something else will come along in the future that champions these same types of features but a bit lower price bracket.
My only fear is that this headset won’t sell well as it seems more like an upgrade path for a small set of users. Pcvr is already a niche community of total vr users and those already own steamvr base stations and controllers are even smaller (vive and index users?). Still very impressive technology on display here, and hoping for their success in the future!
@@pali122 HTC will be selling them from now on. There's at least a few years left of base station manufacturing. You'll be able to get the base stations you need for the years you will use this headset, no doubt. Next gen versions some years from now.... Sure, then I believe things will start moving on even further, but there will likely still be some demand for base stations so I believe they'll be around for a while to come.
The realistic price tag being around $1500 for someone really wanting an upgrade from a Quest 2 (like myself) is really steep for the same FOV, but I am still very temped. I have been waiting for something new in the Valve Index class so I can justify an upgrade and this maybe it for me especially as someone with glasses. If I can afford the hefty price tag around when it come out, I will definitely be getting this.
When Thrill mentioned that this headset offloaded all the unnecessary bits and let the PC do the work...I thought maybe that would save on cost greatly. Apparently not rip.
It’s going to cost more than that. Base stations are $150 ish to $290 ish each. You’ll want at least 2. You’ll also want controllers (probably knuckles controllers) which will cost $375 ish.
@@CrowMancerMan the price of index controllers must have changed or something cause I bought them straight from valve for $375 ish, I think. I might be thinking about my FBTs, though.
It may seem niche now, but I assure you this is a step towards the eventuality of VR. Let's call it modular-wearable VR. Put a small battery pack on the back of that head strap to power displays and discrete headtracking. Connect it to an XR2 box no bigger than a cellphone that sits in an armband on your arm of choice with its own discrete battery. How you design your box can influence wether you now have a setup that gives you Quest 2/ Pico 4 output for twice the battery life, or something much more powerful with a more similar discharge time. Get yourself a pair of quest pro controllers and you're gold for the future. You can update that box on your arm every year or two as the tech gets better, you can get the usual swag and battery extenders, synthetic heat decoupling armbands etc etc...but that's where it's at, modular-wearable VR.
I just really wanna know how the microphone sounds on this, as excited as I am, I pray they put out something that sounds at least on par with the Index, if a little worse since I can't imagine they'd be willing to setup a binaural microphone setup for something as small as this. The fact that you've been helping them out for a long time to basically perfect this for index users who wanna upgrade, I cannot wait. genuinely. Now I didn't see this mentioned anywhere but does this have a 3.5mm jack? or anything like that? edit: nm thank you for forcing them to use a good mic.
He just over hyps everything, he's going to use this instead of his index lmfao.. this thing has a smaller fov then the quest 2,, his nft game crashed and burned btw
@@pLayC what are you talking about? Did you watch the video end to end hommie? I don't quite agree with the over hype part, but what's so wrong with him using the headsets he wants lmao. Also, what NFT game?
I don't get why Meta, Steam or any of the other brands don't separate the video from the computing device. One could easily wear the smaller computer on your back or hip and send video with cable (fibre or gold plated). One could probably use a mini-pc and strap it to the body, and run a cable to the lenses for full portability. Batteries can run these things for hours. Just look at gaming laptops.
@@The_Bird_Bird_Harder Foviated rendering yields insane benefits. It would also allows a modestly specked pc push super wide FOV at high frames because ony 30° or less need to be rendered at max resolution. But it is highly irritating for capturing gameplay and the forced viewpoint was also a main complaint about the Avatar movies.
For me personally all it needs is eye tracking. Maybe they could make a pro unit with these extra features added. Other than that I might purchase this when the time comes over an index (would still get bay stations, and controllers)
It's partially thanks to you that I've now preordered it. My biggest thing keeping me from doing more vr is literally the comfort, the index is great, but its just heavy on my face
The production cost and overhead to actually admin all these to customising the glasses would probably be more than to mass manufacture it as adjustable. Just look at what HTC is doing with their headsets. I find this a really big step back on mass production. If you are into production business and not thinking of scaling up, you already failed 1/2 way.
I dont really see the point in making the headset smaller if you're still going to have a massive cable trailing around to get in the way. After one trip too many i've not used my index in half a year for this reason.
@@sarabihyena yeah i agree i would rather modernize my index with eye tracking face tracking and wireless for the same price... But if there comes a day when the big screen turns wireless i would seriously consider it.
Finally! A real reason to check out something other than the index. I don't mind lack of eye tracking - it wasn't a draw for me - the face tracker can be a bolt on - this tiks boxes I didn't even consider!
I own Index, PSVR 2 , Q2 and Rift S. I'm A huge VR junkie. The Rift S is my go to because of comfort and ease of use. Visually all of these headsets look about the same while in game and playing. Point being better specs doesn't always mean much and I don't want to use light houses anymore in 2023
@@moon_phaser_410 yes. The vive headsets can all be wireless for pcvr. it requires you to buy a 300$ accessory though. way better than the quest for wireless pcvr because it transmits data over 60hz infared signal which is MUCH faster than wifi like the quest uses/
@Socucius Ergalla I'm never supporting Meta, at least not in the foreseeable future, without them significantly changing their approach to the VR market.
I don't think this concept is terribly complicated so hopefully a lot of companies will hop on this and compete to make the best version of this for an affordable price
I hate cables in VR, but could definitely see a counterbalance antenna and a battery pack (I'd be OK with it being on a belt with a cable up to the headset) being awesome.
the main thing i loved about the CV1 was the weight it was so much lighter- this really has me thinking but 1000$ is quite the price tag - 700$ is closer to a possibility
This, my friends, is much worse then facebook that's how they get all your most important biometrics without having to ask for them ! you pay mostly with data that is so important you don't even start to get how and why, the headset should be free and every new generations of it too for such an ask.
My biggest concern with a personalized device like this is the footprint it's going to leave when people grow out of these Like physically grow out I don't have glasses myself so I don't know how often the lenses will be swapped out due to them being based on your prescription but I know it will happen The fact that you can't really sell them when you're done or repurpose the parts makes it seem like when you're done with it then it's just going to be quite a bit of junk in the end
Of course I'm recognizing that it is a custom item and a lot of custom items end up having a similar situation Maybe I'm just being picky because I love VR but something feels weird with this whole process

The prescription lenses are apparently inserts that attach magnetically, not a change to the actual pancake lenses, so IPD seems like the only thing that can't be changed by ordering a replacement part.
@@Tigerhearty ??? Do you not think that they have that information already if they wanted it? Imma need you to take off your foil hat. It’s ok, it’s safe to come out now.

I'm happy to see another person that feels that contrast ratio makes ALL the difference. Those grey blacks just ruin the immersion. As a person that uses VR to watch my 3D movie collection and my own 180° videos this looks like a buy for me. Looking forward to your complete review. Happy to hear you are rejuvenated! 😛
That's awesome. I've been waiting so long for something like this to come to market. The bigger headsets I just can't wear due to a neck injury so something small and lightweight will be perfect for flight sims and space sims
I think I'll wait until we get something like this but with a wider FOV. I still have yet to feel truly immersed in VR, and I think the biggest reason is because my headset's FOV isn't that good.
I do Synth Riders videos on my channel and I can absolutely vouch for the importance of having a lighter VR brick on your face. When I went from the Quest 2 to the G2V2, even though I was tethered, it made a huge difference. I felt so free!! There's something about having that weight there and even just being passively aware of it that affects movement. It's like my brain house does this calculation and decreases movement range while I sherpa a chunk of electronics on my face through a beatmap. I hope they keep the shell see-through like in the video because circuitry is sexy AF. Great video, Thrill. LOVE your enthusiasm and energy always. (get paid nxt time tho haha, nah, respect that u ain't shillin)
imo its really dumb to do what they're doing. The price is pretty ridiculous for this device and it's mainly because of all these custom things they are doing. What they should be doing is selling the base headset much cheaper with an ipd slider and a more general face plate. Then they should be selling the more customized face plates separately as an addon for the people that really care about that or need it. I genuinely couldn't see myself spending almost $1500 CAD on a headset on its own, especially as someone with an index. I understand the standpoint of it being for people already in the steamvr space, but at the same time as someone with an index already in the steamvr space, justifying spending so much on a device thats only a better version of the already great thing i have is hard
This, my friends, is much worse then facebook that's how they get all your most important biometrics without having to ask for them ! you pay mostly with data that is so important you don't even start to get how and why, the headset should be free and every new generations of it too for such an ask.
@@CyionVR i would argue having a custom system where they have to check every single face 3d scan and custom make a headset specific to each persons IPD would be more costly than using the extra parts for a slider
@@Snikabarz I see what your saying but one of their key selling features is the custom face gasket that fits exactly to your face. I have heard they might make a universal face gasket and then in that case you would be wishing for an ipd slider.
@@CyionVR thats what im saying is dumb. They should ditch that selling point, because it being small and visually impressive is already more than enough. All these extra custom things dont need to exist and are just driving up the cost of an otherwise great product. I think the custom things are definitely cool, but again should exist as addons instead. I really hope the rumour is true and they will start selling ones (at hopefully a lower cost) with a universal gasket
Honestly I've been staying away from VR for a whole slew of reasons, but this might be the move in the market that gets me to finally make the purchase.
If the FOV was noticeably better than my Quest 2 then I would seriously consider this headset. As it stands being wired only and a low FOV, hard pass for me. My ideal headset would be PCVR only with wireless capability with the battery behind the head for balance and it would have high res screens and high FOV. Hopefully something like that will come out this year. The Somnium VR1 looks big and heavy which I don't like but it might end up being my next headset if its as good as it sounds.
@Cen Ciende I heard that and the Quest 2 has a low FOV. I hate that it looks like I'm looking through a tunnel. If I'm paying $1k I expect a much better FOV.
@Thezuule I heard that and the Quest 2 has a low FOV. I expect much better at that price point. I don't enjoy looking through a tunnel every time I put on my Q2.
Holy FUCK I didn't think I'd live long enough to see another VR renaissance -- but I think Beyond being a production level proof of concept available for consumers, the market might shift in a huge way. I'm 100% preordering one.
it would be great if they add an option to purchase the custom foam separately, to allow for multiple ppl to use it, but i have no idea about how to resolve the IPD and lenses. this looks like a great product!
About not seeing pixels. Yes you can. You can see them in the Aero, easily. Just try to use the VR Headset and read something in it. Even the Aero is not yet capable of doing usual monitor stuff with it. When playing games like Alyx you might not realize it, but the resolution still needs to go way up until we have a monitor HD or even 4k like picture
As someone who only really used VR for flight sims, this seems perfect. light and confortable is gonna be super valuable when in VR for 5+ hours at a time
I've been wondering for several years now why nobody was pushing the entire processing stack into the logical place it should be, your super powerful processor it's already plugged in to. This is exactly the product I've been waiting for. Lightweight, custom molded, perfect fit, specific use case. It obviously won't have the impact or market saturation of a more all-in-one design, but that's not who it's for anyways. Well done Bigscreen, this is seriously impressive.
THIS IS SO COOL finally, something, no matter how expensive it is. its pushing vr forward to a smaller form factor. this is probably one of the biggest hiccups other than price for a lot of people. I know so many people that ARE willing to pay a lot of money for good vr but just cant get over the comparatively bulky form factor of basically every other vr headset out there. this product will be a great success and for good reason. the biggest problem they are going to have in the future is marketing and actually getting the word out past the prosumer market / people that already have vr headsets.
I feel like this is one of those first innovative product that doesn't sell that much because of the high price and then disappears after a couple of years because other company copy its style and improve some element to sell it way cheaper for the average consumer.
This looks amazing! The sharability aspect is unfortunate though. My girlfriend and I both use VR, so it would be nice to be able to hot swap the custom parts. Ideally, the facial frame and lenses would be able to connect to each other so that you could readily pull both off in one motion. This would allow you to quickly switch between custom frames for the frequent users. Of course the lens and facial frame would be severable via screw or something
Hope ya'll like the end.
A quick correction! The prescription lenses are actually magnetic! So.. if you need a prescription change you just swap out the magnetic lens part.
NOICE.

Glad you share what you know and how you feel. Never liked people trying to market out of their niche when that audience cant support it. I do think you could take at least 1 penny for playtesting lol ;)
Great to hear!
that really should have made it into the video, it's such a major point :O
does this mean a loss of fov for those who require prescriptions?
@@HeckinDoga Don't think so. In my Quest 2 I have magnetic prescription inserts. If I wear the headset with my glasses my eyes are a good distance away from the lenses. If I wear it without the glasses and use the inserts instead I can reduce that distance. I can't use the headset without inserts or glasses, so I really have no comparison to using it all by itself. But I don't think leaving the inserts out does very much to the FOV.

I didn't think about that. That must be perfect for your videos lol
i would suggest if you are using it solely for watching movies to instead get a pair of Nreal air glasses. they are much lighter and only half the price,
Yup, I think this kind of service is the future for VR.
Wow the form factor is quite innovative, expecting great things in the future as well!

I agree, a massive thank you to Thrill for making them put in a good mic!
Now the question is the audio. Good speakers matter too and replacing the off ear stuff with earbuds or a headset seems like still a negative.......

@@Nobody-Nowhere Good. Resellers are a cancer to the world. Not the ones that genuinely want to resell a product they no longer use, but the ones that buy the product for the purpose of reselling it at a way higher price while it's out of stock.
@@Nobody-Nowhere yeah, I would've considered it if it had a manual IPD adjustment.
Why four base stations? 😮 For a larger tracking area?
My suggestion for the company: Make the device modular, so some components can be resold and make it so that that only the parts that needs your measurements are needed and can be swapped on the fly. Decrease the price for the headset as time goes on, to make it more widespread and attractive to regular consumers. Also make the service which requires custom facial measurements separate as well, because our facial shape will change over time and eye prescriptions also change over time.
This is already the case.
Did you watch the video? He talked about that.

They NEED to make a pro version that has a very wide FOV. That would be the deciding factor for me.
Exactly, literally the perfect VR headset if it had better FOV, what downsides other than FOV does this thing have
that is my number one feature for any new headset.
Not just wide FOV, but also vertically more so you can have better body presence.

The custom foam is a great idea, and I can't wait to see it developed further. Sadly, I'll have to wait until there is a wireless/inside out tracking solution. Living in a very small apartment makes VR difficult at times

This is exactly what I’ve been waiting for. My biggest issue is I’m too lazy for VR. Normal VR headsets are too big and it feels slightly suffocating to put on.
Fingers crossed it goes really well, and we see future products from them that add more of those missing features.

I've been saying people have undervalued contrast in headsets for a long time, it's good to see a company that understands this and sharing it with others ☺️
they do listen to feedback, in my experience. i asked for (and perhaps others did too) a dimmer switch in BigScreenVR and they eventually implemented it
I agree. That's why we build local dimming and qled displays into our new units like the Crystal.
It is so good to know that there's actually people focusing specifically on PCVR. When you get it, can you tell us if it can use the same base stations used for FBT? By that, I mean can FBT and the headset share base stations.
And sleeping can finally be comfortable!
steamvr headsets and fbt have always been tracked by the same base stations. it's steamvr base stations either 1.0 or 2.0
The basestations don't track anything.

Wireless means you would need to add a battery. Kind of defies the idea of making it as comfortable as possible.

Master of Few, Jack of some trades.
I think the weight reduction will be huge. A major challenge of mine is how all headsets sag just enough to distort my image. It always looks best when I hold it myself. The only workaround has been tighter straps, which is of course uncomfortable
Have you tried the counterweights? I use 'em with my index
I haven't, no. That's probably a good idea though. Obviously less weight would be better, but balance is second best. Any suggestions that mount well?
Love what they've done with this headset, focusing on size, comfort, and overall usability. Sure, face/eye tracking would've been nice but most of the time I don't think that'd be useful. What about the quest 2 did u notice was a genuine upgrade when going to the index?
I own both a quest 2 and quest pro and I don't see how a index could be a upgrade from my quest pro
@@thedoomslayer5863Light leakage on Quest Pro is terrible. You would get a major upgrade on that no matter what headset you chose.
@@dtz1000 light leak is zero with magnetic rubber face gasket
@@RogerEssigArtist You just have to pay £50 extra for it. Anyway, I heard from reviewers there is still light leakage with that.
it's super thin rubber, so it conforms to everyone's facial contours when worn correctly.
I think my major problem with the lenses being specific for your prescription is the fact that prescriptions change.
The prescription lenses appear to be magnetic add-ons.
It isn't the optics themselves that are specific to your prescription, but removable lens inserts that magnetically attach. :D
this aged porly
I was thinking the same thing. My dad and my grandpa both started with 20/20 vision that has slower degraded, my dad needs reading glasses now and my gramps has a genuine prescription. Maybe you can send it in and they will replace it with a small fee or smt
@@mori_a.Wolfboi wouldn't hurt to read the other comments here... The prescription lenses just attach by magnets, they aren't part of the headset. ;)
I love seeing all this new hardware coming out that just gets better and better, it’s just so incredible to me, especially when I consider how much further we can take things.
Of course, there is also a twinge of sadness when I also realize how much I will never be able to afford most of this comfortably :,)
I really love your content man, keep up the good work! I love how fair you are when it comes to reviews, not over or underselling any one product
This will probably be what I’ll get as an upgrade to my Quest 2.
Might as well go all out and get some custom IEMs to go with it too.
The projected retail price of $1,000 is about what I expected …
Is it? I would assume it to be cheaper since the rest of what usually the headset does is being handled by the PC.
You would have to spend ALOT more than $1000. You would need Steam Trackers and new controllers too
@@drewpatterson8009 Most people that would get this already have that stuff from an index setup or vive. Honestly compared to an index ($500) or vive pro 2 ($800) it is worth it.
The rough and dirty look of it is cool to.... Great job to all involved, vr needs a big change up and this is the right direction
Yeah and we dont know how long valve will sell basestations
@@pali122 HTC will be selling them from now on.
There's at least a few years left of base station manufacturing.
You'll be able to get the base stations you need for the years you will use this headset, no doubt.
Next gen versions some years from now.... Sure, then I believe things will start moving on even further, but there will likely still be some demand for base stations so I believe they'll be around for a while to come.
You also need a $1000 iphone just for the facial interface, which is a tiny subset of the vr community
besides the face/eye tracking and horizontal fov, this looks seriously incredible. this is the future of pcvr
Horizontal has been improved to 102, and modern have added eye and face tracking.
Big Screen makes little screen VR. FOV's are supposed to be getting bigger, not smaller.
It's not all about FOV, form factor is a massive part of vr as well, I agree that a lowering in said FOV is kinda shit
@@TechMaestro01 index controllers are 280, base stations are 135 each so its 550
@@CrowMancerMan the price of index controllers must have changed or something cause I bought them straight from valve for $375 ish, I think. I might be thinking about my FBTs, though.
@@CrowMancerMan as for the base stations, yes, they are $135 each; however, you’re looking at $250-$290 ish if you want the latest ones.

It sounds wonderful. Full, rich sound.
This channel is an absolute treasure, and It's amazing to be getting such insightful, useful, and almost relatable content all the time. :)
A big shame there's no eye tracking! Hopefully it'll be a feature in the future, transforms it from a good headset to a great one
Definitely. Social aspects must be a thing in VR
And the insane performance benefit that comes with it (up to ~4x faster render times)
@@animation_station Seriously now? That's mad.
Games don't have eye tracking on PC , except iracing and flight simulator
@@x32i77 thanks. I'm the guy who didn't ask.
Wireless connectivity and a battery in the back of a headstrap is an absolute must for me. Either way though, super excited to see where this goes!
@@sarabihyena next gen Wigig and better FOV with audio strap and this thing is literally the perfect VR headset
Finally! A real reason to check out something other than the index. I've been eyeing the pico 4 - but seeing how excited you are as i feel you share a lot of passions about your headset and vr content that I do - makes me wanna save up for that next step in vr.
Point being better specs doesn't always mean much and I don't want to use light houses anymore in 2023
this would be perfect for me if only it had wireless 😩 I'm too used to wireless with the vive pro now. Still exciting tho.
Wireless as on standalone PCVR gameplay? I've been looking for a headset other than the Quest 2 that can do that.

Yeah, I hope when they get more volume the price starts coming down by lots
Exactly what I've been waiting for, but Iphone required to do the scan? Well, that's a serious PITA, so for me: NOPE. Still waiting...

This, my friends, is much worse then facebook that's how they get all your most important biometrics without having to ask for them ! you pay mostly with data that is so important you don't even start to get how and why, the headset should be free and every new generations of it too for such an ask.
The form factor and weight are amazing.
My biggest concern with a personalized device like this is the footprint it's going to leave when people grow out of these
Like physically grow out
I don't have glasses myself so I don't know how often the lenses will be swapped out due to them being based on your prescription but I know it will happen
The fact that you can't really sell them when you're done or repurpose the parts makes it seem like when you're done with it then it's just going to be quite a bit of junk in the end
Of course I'm recognizing that it is a custom item and a lot of custom items end up having a similar situation
Maybe I'm just being picky because I love VR but something feels weird with this whole process
This, my friends, is much worse then facebook that's how they get all your most important biometrics without having to ask for them ! you pay mostly with data that is so important you don't even start to get how and why, the headset should be free and every new generations of it too for such an ask.
Now if there was a way to make it so that the face shaped part could be restructured for repurposing then it would be a golden product!
Like maybe a kit to swap the foam out
I'm happy to see another person that feels that contrast ratio makes ALL the difference. Those grey blacks just ruin the immersion. As a person that uses VR to watch my 3D movie collection and my own 180° videos this looks like a buy for me. Looking forward to your complete review. Happy to hear you are rejuvenated! 😛
Where do you get 3D movies, I want to go into that for my Quest 2
The black levels on the Quest 2 are brighter than the WHITE levels of theatrical projection from 35mm film.
purchased the quest 2 last week to test VR and I am hooked. seeing this blows my mind!! 100% will be considering the beyond for my future upgrade
This looks superb and finally represents a form factor normal people might find palatable. Nice video as usual, happy monday.
This with a pocket battery for wireless PCVR would be awesome.
Ahh requires base stations, DENIED. Looks cool tho.
That's awesome. I've been waiting so long for something like this to come to market. The bigger headsets I just can't wear due to a neck injury so something small and lightweight will be perfect for flight sims and space sims
I wonder how insane the vr headsets will be in 10/20 years. Because this headset is already incredible
Slight chance that the technology is abandoned for neural interfacing.
I think I'll wait until we get something like this but with a wider FOV.
I still have yet to feel truly immersed in VR, and I think the biggest reason is because my headset's FOV isn't that good.
They upgraded it to 103 degrees. The index is 108, the Quest 2 is 97.
Adding an ipd slider would make it more expensive because of the cost of the extra mechanical parts. But it is a nice option to have.

As he explained if you paid any attention at all, the FOV is not low and is higher than the Quest 2.
The Somnium is from a crypto company which has never sold a hardware product. I'm not putting high odds on it ever actually getting made.

About not seeing pixels. Yes you can. You can see them in the Aero, easily. Just try to use the VR Headset and read something in it.
