- The Arctic region is the gateway to the North Atlantic. For NATO and its Allies, maintaining a strong presence here is vital to protect trade, transport and communication links between North America and Europe. As climate change causes the polar ice caps to melt and the sea levels to rise, new sea routes are beginning to emerge, which could present a threat to Euro-Atlantic security.
Greenland is considered by scientists to be ground zero for climate change. Along with the Faroe Islands, it forms part of the Kingdom of Denmark and is therefore under Danish military protection. That protection falls to the Joint Arctic Command, or JACO, a Danish-led operational command with a central headquarters in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital.

I WISH that Canada was as committed to the patrol of the North as these folks are. Well Done! Thank you. We Canadians have gifted politicians who artfully dodge the questions and slide past the issues - but the country that likes to refer to ourselves as 'We The North" has a LONG way to go to up our game (in terms of NATO related spending) and other commitments to programs like this. Thank you - for being a Leader!!
The good part is that Canada has many ice breakers, something the US is really lacking especially after destroying there own commercial shipping industry.
it will not happen unless Canada is hit itself, 80-90% of Canadians hate militarization.
Canada has a very small and very aged fleet of diesel icebreakers...unfortunately...and very few ice capable patrol vessels.
By rights, Canada should be a world leader in this category of Arctic capable vessels including SAR types as well as supply and maintenance specialist mother ships!

You guy's have Arctic Patrol Frigates ( at least 2 ) build after Danish Design, i have seen both of them i Nuuk harbour, and we actually helped both with docking and leaving the port, with the tug i'm chief on.
Well since greenland is under the danish kingdom the responsibilty lies at us, but of course we need all the help we can get from our allies, and im sure we already do

Absolutely. For those of us who care about what's going on in our neck of the woods (and seas), this sort of information is highly useful.
Seemed kinda superficial and lacking. There was a few interviews focused on global warming. But this was supposed to be about the patrols not the effect of melting ice
@@oeliamoya9796 The point was, and is, climate change is making this area more accessible, therefore more interesting, and ultimately more contested.
I think the presenter also works for UK Forces news or something, he seems familiar somehow. There are also Public Affairs branches in quite a few militaries with filmmaking experience and stuff.

The Arctic is an important place that the allies have neglected for a while. China has been making moves here. And the US is aware of the threat now more than ever.
The problem is that both Russia and China "near-Arctic" have a head start. This region is too important for us to continue ignoring. We especially cannot allow China to play resource games in the region as it would cause much environmental damage to say the least. It is also a huge national security risk for NATO countries.
@@rickjames18 Danish intelligence have exposed and hindered several attempts from both nations to trick the Greenlandic parliament to give them concessions for this and that but do not worry. We are on top of it constantly. It have our full attention. By the way, Russia ARE a arctic nation but China´s "near arctic" they can stuff. Either you are pregnant or you are not!

@@georgecatana9081 Own are the wrong wording. Greenland are part of the Danish Kingdom. Same as faroe Islands. Both have selfrule and own parliaments. Both have permanent seats in the Danish parliament but Denmark do not have any in theirs. Aspects of foreign policy and defence are controlled via the Danish parliament. As a Dane I can say I emotionally feel we all are part of the same family and if you hear any from the Kingdom argue you will see we are more alike than most.

The Ambitions of Russia and China over the Arctic Route
September 22 2018, The container ship Venta Mearsk arrived to Bremerhaven, Germany through the northern Sea Route which connects East Asia and Europe via arctic circle. The vessel is said to be first container vessel crossing the northern sea route altough it is known that there have been other cargo companies(mostly russian and chiniese ships) completed this journey previously. The Venta Mearsk was carrying frozen fish from Russian far-east city Vladivostok and Electronics from Seul, South Korea.The vessel sailed from Seul on 28 of August. The journey from Seul to Bremerhaven took 25 days via arctic route. Normally, the journey would take around 34 days via traditional Canal Suez. The Northern Sea Route(NRS) may represent the new transit route between Asia pasific region and Western Europe. Geographically, The NRS is shorter and faster than typical indian ocean-canal suez route. The NSR allows reduction of important amount of costs and time. Russia and China invest to extend the feasablity of the Northern Sea Route througtought the year and plan to get lion’s share .
The NSR consists predominantly russian territorial seawaters and the navigation carried out in compliance with Russia’s legislation. The actual length of NRS and the transit time depend on each particular voyage and the ice condition. Vessels sailing through the northern sea route are supported by ice pilotage and icebreaker ships. Ice breaking assistance carried out mainly Russia , as well as China and Norway. Russian State Nuclear energy Coorporation(ROSATOM) is possesing world’s only nuclear ice-breaking fleet. The main activity of the ships in that fleet is icebreaking in order to make the navigation possible through the NSR. Currently, the Northern Sea Route is feaseable only 4 months from july to october due to ice thickness. ROSATOM is developping new generation of nuclear ice-breakerships and it means that it will not be a suprise if NRS will be feaseable throughout the year in the near future and become a real competitor to traditional Canal Suez Route. This would mean to become a new artery between Asia and Europe transits.
Russia is the most ambitious to set Northern Sea Rout as a regular commercial shipping route but not the only one. China’s interests and activity over arctic region are growing too. Russia is using no queques no pirate narrative to promote NSR, by recalling the crowd of ships in canal suez and pirates in Gulf of Aden. On June 2018, Russia and China have signed a bilateral agreement which predicts the credit of $9,5 billion from China to Russia. The agreement was made to create a financal mechanism for joint projects in as part of Eurasia economic union as well as belt and road initiative . The agreement specifically emphasized to invest to arctic infrastructure and the Northern Sea route. It seems that China is investing to Northern Sea route in order to make it as Polar Silk route. China is not a new player in Arctic region. Yet, the country is observer in Arctic Council only since 2013. China released its first offical Arctic Policy on January 2018 with which expressed China’s policy goals and ambitions to become stakeholder in Arctic affairs.
Given the fact that the volume of transported Cargo via NRS increased %35 from 2015 to 2016, NRS is becoming more active every year. Taking into account that Russia is increasing the number of its military bases in Arctic and developping more offshore oil and hydrocarbon explotation projects and China’s growing interests, it can be said that not only the importance of NSR will increase in the upcoming years but also arctic region will be a new competition area international relations. that was said in 2018. and now we are in 2023. do you see how important arctic is =)
Fine comment. The Co-founding nations of NATO, The Kingdom of Denmark (Denmark, Faeroe Islands and Greenland) and Canada controls the strait and I think the free world should be grateful for that. I cannot imagine any being interested in a superpower stand of in the arctic.

I lived 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle in Igloolik Nunavut year around from 2004-2015.
My fundamental advice to southern newcomers related to the natural environment was that: "THIS IS NOT THE LAND OF SECOND CHANCES!"
In a community not fair away (less than a thousand miles) a person died in a springtime blizzard and whiteout trying to walk about a mile from the airstrip to town!

Very good video, I saw a report on a German NATO air patrol in the Baltic, It costs 74g Euros for one Air patrol, I wonder how much does it cost for the Danish Navy for one patrol??

Arctic sovereignty takes big money. Military presence, icebreakers, infrastructure, etc. In a time when some of the players carry huge debt. Russia (3rd most northerly country) is making the investment. Greenland, Canada & USA (#1, #2 & #5) to much lesser extent.
NATO is going to have to build a totally different Navy just for the Arctic if Russia and China are going to Challenge NATO in the Arctic. They will all need reinforced Hulls at least, and we need many more Armed Ice Breakers. When we have that sort of Different Navy for the Arctic will we only then dominate the Arctic. You can't be fighting with regular Naval Vessels in those waters, otherwise more will go down from hitting Ice than being hit by a Munition or something... Just a thought for NATO to think about!!!!!😉 Power to Ukraine!!!!

It is the flag of the Danish navy. The UK royal navy also has its own flag.
The navy flag has become the flag of the government in general in recent centuries.

They actually SOLD the Hebrides to Scotland... Those was Norwegian for hundreds upon hundreds of years.

Greenland are entirely free to declare themselve independent at any time they would wish to. They just choose not to.
It's not quite that simple diplomatically and militarily! It's a heck of a lot more complicated economically since Denmark has subsidized the semi-automonous government of Greenland to the tune of a great many BILLIONS of Danish Kroner or now Euros I suppose, annually.
Denmark also handles almost all of their international diplomacy as well as almost 100% of their military and coast guard services.
Our Canadian Arctic Territories (especially Nunavut) is in almost exactly the same position of dependency. 'Mutually enabling' some would opine!

Greenland still has the right to self determination. Denmark just don’t have the right to stop paying.
We have reached a point where the Greenland population just hate us. Denmark has to let Greenland go and then Canada or USA will take over.
We can not make them understand that Denmark is a small state under the influence of greater powers.
