Most dogs abandon the runt. Daisy is a very special mama.
Not really the only time dogs will abandon the runt is if it’s showing signs of not having a strong survival chance. In this case most moms pick a favorite in their litter this time it just happened to be the runt was her favorite all my dogs had a at least 1 or 2 favorites in their litters those puppies usually ended up being brats because the mom would shelter them too much.

I wonder if there's correlation between frequency of abandoning the runt and the mom not getting all the care she needs to thrive. Like if you're not getting the nutrients and healthcare you need to thrive you're not going to waste energy on an offspring that might not make it anyways and jeopardize the health of the rest of the litter.

Not everyone actually gives away the puppies, I’ve known several families that keep them so the pack can stay together.

Yep, that is a very confident doggy-mom who knows exactly how to care for her puppies and which ones might need what extra care. I bet she also knows which pups she will need to discipline more, which need their attention grabbing before she teaches them lessons, and which need their confidence boosting to face the world alone.
This is why you should always meet your new pet's mom before you buy. You want to see their teacher :)

That is so awesome! Most mothers tend to reject the runt of the litter. She is one special Mama!
She must be able to afford that additional love; as oppose to a more hostile environment.
Maybe my Border Collie Tess couldn't save her little runt. She might've known the 9th puppy-a girl-was worse off than I knew. Unfortunately, the wee one died during the night, not too long after it was born. 5 sisters and 3 brothers survived.

I have a dutch shep who always makes sure everyone of her litter is fine and healthy, last year she gave birth to 11 puppies in one go, and managed to take care for them all until they picked up their strength and started running.
This mama dog has more maternal instincts than some humans I know.

She's literally the best dog mom I've ever seen. Not even my dog did such a good job when she had her pups.
No it does not need extra care, that is not the way of nature. Many animal mothers will eat the runt. Even if it survives the first 3 weeks of life, it will probably be killed by the others. And even if it survives THAT, it more than likely won't live 6 months even with the best human care.

Hey it's been three days. Fun fact, if she was doing this is means her home environment is so comfotable and safe that she can expend the extra energy on the runt which means her life and the puppies is super great. Hope you have another uplifting moment. Yours made me smile. Thank you.
My Ollie boy was the runt of his litter, he lived inside my shirt for 2 weeks until he was strong enough to walk. He grew up to be the best dog I ever had, big, tough and very protective. Any man or dog that came near me, he would look up at me as if to say, do you want me to bash em boss. He never did, one growl was enough. He died 15 years ago, I miss him every day.

Those are the best dogs. I have a runt Rotweiller/English Buldog Mastiff. No one wanted him but he turned out to be the Best of the Pack. Sooo caring and full of love.

It's probably some 11 year old kid who parents are neglecting.
My runt was the most precious gift I had ever had in life, and the saddest loss I have ever experienced.
We never stop missing them. I lost him on 10/10/2010 (jeez I can't believe it has been 9 years already!), and just two weeks ago I had a super lucid dream about him, where he was with me again but he died all over again on me. Woke up completely heartbroken.
I only got to be with him for 4 years and 10 months because he was born with an inoperable liver shunt. He also couldn't pant for some reason. He was a runt for a reason, yaknow? But good Lord was he the CUTEST dog you'd ever seen!!! I will never forget him and wish I could have spent more time on earth with him, as he truly was my bestest friend ever. I was with him 24/7 and it still just wasn't long enough time with him!
He meant so much to me that even though I am very low income due to being didabled, I charged money I just don't have to my credit card to extend his life by a couple of weeks (he needed a blood transfusion and some other emergency life saving measures), just so I could spend the tiniest bit of more time with him, and give him a proper goodbye so he didn't get put down in a cold sterile hospital on a metal table.
When the blood transfusion had "worn off," and he was going to need another one since his liver no longer was working at all, I had an old high school boyfriend who became a vet come to my house and put him to sleep in my arms, in my bed, so that he felt very loved until his very last moments on earth.
Peanut (his name) was such a beloved little baby. God I miss him.

Yes, I can’t afford any more doggies either after that. I am still paying it off from my credit card! It really sucks so much because I’m sure you understand that being disabled means that we are so much more isolated and need the companionship of such beautiful loving animals even more than able bodied people who can go out and socialize without issue. It is really messed up that we can’t afford such companionship. :(

This is so beautiful. It is surely not instinctual for a canine to do this. In fact just the opposite. Most of the time canine mom completely rejects the runt, particularly with a large litter. This is really precious and she is an awesome Mama!

We had a Mama dog that did the same thing when she had puppies and one was smaller than it's litter mates. Those are special Mama's dogs

Years ago we picked 2 puppies from a litter of 8. One was the runt of the litter and the other was the same as the rest. 2 years later the runt weighed a healthy 125 lbs. and the other was a normal 70 lbs. The runt was also nearly the height of a Great Dane while the other was a little smaller than a standard Labrador Retriever. It's amazing what a little personal attention will do.
The runts are the best ones of the litter. They have lots of extra love to give because they needed extra love from momma to get a good start on life. I would adopt the runt in a heartbeat.

How wonderful! I may be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure this is quite rare. The runt is often left to fend for itself, as to not take away food from the others that have a better chance at survival. So sweet to see this.
You are right in most cases, but Labs are a rare and special breed. My black Lab, Satin, never had pups, but for about 3 years straight she developed milk and was a wonderful, loving and protective mother to one very lucky Dino-roar stuffed animal.
We took 3 Fall vacations with her curled around her Baby in the back seat floor of our car.
We had her for 15 years and still miss her today.

I've had many dogs come into my life over the years.... one of my favorites was the runt of the litter.... had her from 8 weeks old till she passed 16 years later. .... that's been 3 years ago now.... I have another canine buddy now.... but he's not like she was.... and thats ok too ... love him as well.... but I still think of my little runt girl daily.... she turned out to be a great friend.... and companion.
Don't be afraid to choose the runt of a litter....... alot of times , they turn out to be the best of the litter.
Everyone is shaped by their early experiences. Just look at the people who were shaped by being 'the littlest person in the room' to see how that puppy might be the most empathetic of the litter. :)

It is tough to lose a soul dog. You never forget them. I only had my soul dog for 2-3 years before he was hit by a car. That was in highschool and I’m now out of college, and I still think of him all the time. I had my soul cat at the same time. She lived until she was 18. Eventually the sad memories become sweet ones. Luckily, I think we get multiple soul animals. I recently rescued a pair of orphaned kittens and one of them has really clicked with me. He sleeps at my feet while I work. He sleeps against my stomach at night. He rides in the car with me. Goes out on the rowboat with me. He hangs out in the bathroom when I take a shower, and we talk to each other all the time like crazy people.
There’s a special human-animal connection that is distinct from every other kind of love on earth. I can’t explain it, but I hope all people will experience this feeling at some point in their life. Took my dad about 55 years to have it. One day, a dog just chose him, and that was that. He is a big softy for animals now.

I had a runt too. He was 5 weeks old when I got him. I got him just before my oldest son passed. My fur-baby waa the one that got me thru the hardest time of my life. Someone stole him. I was devastated. They will treat him like a dog and he's never been treated that way. My fur-baby even had his own bedroom. I miss him.

As my therapist may say, if my mum was 1/16th as careing as Daisy, I wouldn't be anywhere an emotional wreck I am now ...
To put it into context, a aquantance just got 8 years, and some change, prison sentence for sexually abusing two, under 16 year old, girls, amongst other things. Fortunetly, they weren't his own kids, and his wife divorced him the second he got sent down.
My dad was given 9 years for similiarly abusing my younger, severely disabled, sister and I, from when I was 14, until 21, so my sister must have been ~12. It only stopped because, long story short, a close friend of mine noticed I was having a slow motion nervious breakdown. But even after he was sentenced, not only my mum did divorce him, I still remember her yelling at me "So who is going to pay for the mortgage now ..."
... and people wonder why I prefer cats over some humans ...
