maybe if they gave Autumn an opportunist personality where he actually wanted to do stuff his way and using the president as a means to an end would have made him a better character, Hell even the player could convince him that he can just run away and not be hunted down for using the Enclave for his own ends where he will take your word and hand over the purifier to you. Instead they just make him forget to realize he is holding the chain of command to a PC synthesizer and have him reminded by the player how stupid it seems and he should just walk away.
Between that and the awful faux-Southern accent, this video reminded me why I haven’t touched the main quest since like 2014. Last time I played Fallout 3 was yesterday
They missed a chance to give him a redemption arc, I would've made the fleeing scene canon and had him flee to the commonwealth. Then in fallout 4 have him running a small settlement, using his knowledge to keep the settlement safe. But Bethesda writing, he probably just sat in a cave scheming and developing a new Enclave.

The most evil thing I did in fallout 4 was barter the overseers guardian from vault 81 with all the chems you get from the diamond city blues quest. Got that whole vault addicted no doubt

After nearly a decade, I only just now realized that Autumn speaks with something of a southern accent. He sounds just like I'd imagine a officer in the Confederate Army to.
He sounds kind of British to me during some sentences, I think his accent is the rarely depicted Non Rhotic Southern American accent which is partially influenced by both the usual Southern accent (which is based on Celtic accents from Ireland, Southeast England and Scotland) along with British received pronunciation brought over by upper class influenced UK immigrants that moved to the south.
I agree, idk why we are always forced to love the brotherhood and hate the enclave. especially considering how probably naive and new the LW is to the outside world it make sense after hearing the eyebot broadcasts and seeing how fucked up the wasteland is that youd be inclined to join or side with them. and since you are a vault dweller and not some wastelander they would probably accept you too.
@@spectrumstudios4848 The point of the Enclave quest line in new vegas was to show that even under a group that was evil, the majority of the people in it were not evil themselves, but were instead influenced and convinced that they were of sound morals. The key to understanding the questline is the belief that the enclave was evil, which is what the people in this thread disagree with, and wish wasn't always the case. The constant use of the enclave as the generic bad guys undermines the core theme of the fallout games, said idea being that no conflict, cause, nor group is truly and totally righteous, so therefore no conflict, cause, nor group is truly and totally evil.

That whole conversation exemplifies what Fallout 4 is missing - perks and the SPECIAL stats having meaning in conversations and other activities / actions. That's not to say that Fallout 4 doesn't have it outright - but the instances to which it does are few and far in between.

B-b-b-but-t th-t-t-they're the goo-good g-guys!!!!!! Honestly, I was always dissatisfied with how the Enclave has been portrayed in Fallout as a whole. Fallout 2 gets a slight pass since if it was Obsidian behind Fallout 3, I imagine the Enclave would have gotten the Super Mutant treatment. I.E. they were the main antagonists in the last game, but here you see them operating on their own foundations and interests, many of whom don't have to be your enemies. Or hell, maybe they would have just been the main faction to follow and you would have seen that for all Fallout 2 shows them being ruthless and evil, they (like most people) are a bit more complex than that. But that idea is too complex for poor old Todd. No wonder the Institute is the "bad" faction

That’s all equally terribly written as convincing someone to give up on there goals because the government they knew was illegitimate, is in fact illegitimate. The illegitimate government he rebelled against for the purposes of rebuilding America and bringing prosperity to the wastes. All of which is contingent on activating and controlling the purifier. You convince him to completely abandon everything he’s worked towards and throw away his goals, because the robot he rebelled against technically wasn’t elected. One you completely make someone give up on everything they believe and worked for on a technicality that doesn’t factor into anything there doing. And the other you convince to retreat knowing they fully plan to return stronger and more prepared with advice you gave them. You don’t defeat the legate, you kick him down the road at the cost of making him a more dangerous threat later.

@@craydussy casidy the drunk gets drunk: a ending. The famine is never mentioned as neither is the blockade because new vegas doesn’t grow its own food. Obsidian cut the time down to only a month left so the epilogue that you see changes in map doesn’t happen. It was then a ending where they say stuff happened. The few few times it does matter is when characters appear such as the farmers go to Boulder City and so on if the farm is destroyed. It also does stuff like 76- you can pull tank with factions. In 76 if you are enclave you can pull general status to order stuff from robots and so on. The change in new vegas is similar to 76, although the map doesn’t change thanks to Obsidian. Check Chris Avalon on Obsidian they were struggling to pay employees while slamming phones down on requests and bragging about it. If this was mentioned ‘your obsidian founder privileges could be revoked’ and let’s not mention the obsidian lawyers threatening Chris for going to another company.

People in game say that the Enclave are evil and intended all these things, but the Enclave never actually mention any of this themselves; unless you can point me to anything specific that they say which explains what they want beyond "we will activate the purifier!" After all - all Autumn really says is this: "Once this facility is operational, the masses will flock to the Enclave for fresh water, protection, and a plan for the future." which is exactly what the BoS do once you beat Take It Back! Sooooo, why are they bad again?

He's also a leading member of a faction that sets up military sites all over the wasteland with members who kill any wastelanders nearby, and experiments with using trained Deathclaws for similar purposes. Plus, kidnappings. Also also, they only expressed interest in the purifier once there was an actual possible way to get it working. Where were they for 18 years when the purifier project was abandoned? How long would it take them to establish a foothold at the abandoned purifier and solve the problems? It took two scientists (James, the protag's father; and Jonas, as an assistant) *18 years* to crack it, plus however long James's travels after leaving the vault take. How long would it take a full science team with advanced resources to make those same advances? A few years? Basically, the Enclave as a whole are isolationist upstarts who swoop in once everyone else has done the hard work, they kill people indiscriminately, and their hubris is an inherent negative to the vast majority of people.
its not! hes still alive, its addressed via ED-E (New Vegas), which takes place shortly after fallout 3. Autumn ordered ED-E to be sent off for parts. He is still out there somewhere, its not cannon that he got killed by the player as there is an option where you can spare him. which most likely happened because "we're the good guy" - there is an option where sparing him is for great reason, sorry for rambling hfghfhghf

In my playthrough, James trapped autumn in the purifier with him when they attacked and killed himself and autumn by overloading it. Is that something that changes based on karma?
Karma has no effect on that portion of the game. When it happens though you can see Autumn inject himself with something as the radiation kicks into high gear, can't remember if it's confirmed or not but the general concensus is that it was an experimental form of RadX capable of handling that kind of concentrated dosage.
Sparing him was never an option for me. He cancelled the research for Duraframe Eyebots, and caused Whitley to send ED-E all the way to the west coast.
Too bad Autumn was such a cartoonish character. I don't want to go into all the details here, but let's just say the main quest and Enclave could have been written much, MUCH better.

Honestly that doesn't seem to be the case in this scenario. It's more someone being completely baffled by the idea that someone who sold a child into slavery for being mildly annoying, sparing the Guy who killed their dad, imprisoned them, and then proceeded to show a almost as baffling amount of overconfidence despite the Giant Robot outside. Honestly I'd be pretty confused too.

It kinda sucks that you can't side with the enclave. It'd be cool for the to be a small faction in New Vegas like the brotherhood, or to even have them in the commonwealth, where you and your faction are facing off against the institute, and right before you shut them down the enclave shows up and you gotta work with the institute to stop them, or betray everyone and work with the enclave. But if you go the former then everyone would see how good the institute is
The only difference between this, and a good Karma playthrough, is Sarahs dialogue. With negative Karma, it's implied he'll die no matter what. With good karma, it's implied he'll actually be allowed to live if you spare him.
So the choice to spare him is meaningless? They could have put in some secret escape hatch or something for this exact scene but if you choose to spare him it's just a meaningless way of avoiding a fight?

The worst fallout villain is Ulysses from Lonesome road. He's basically a self insert for the writer to rant about things he doesn't like about the ncr, the legion and the post post apocalyptic world.
This game allows you to destroy the brotherhood in its dlc, but not join the enclave in any way. Always found that to be nonsense, surely there's enough nuance to justify the choice to join.
The Enclave is one of the few factions that would likely *never* take in outsiders. Certainly not the more xenophobic branches. Their whole viewpoint, as expressed in Fallout 3, is that they are the inheritors of the country and everything currently in it is inherently corrupted and must be wiped out at all costs. It only makes sense as a player faction if you were actually born into it.

I kinda hope that Autumn survived canonically, I don't think he was completely evil, and if he or his ideas were to live on, it would make for an interesting version of the enclave, should they ever resurface again. Instead of just blindly killing everyone, they do start to become a little more reasonable and tolerant, although very much still anti-mutant and aiming to revive the US government. I don't want flat out black or white factions, the enclave have a lot of potential as more than just 'the baddies'. Plus the enclave objectively have the most badass armours and that's reason enough for me lmao.

That whole conversation exemplifies what Fallout 4 is missing - perks and the SPECIAL stats having meaning in conversations and other activities / actions. That's not to say that Fallout 4 doesn't have it outright - but the instances to which it does are few and far in between.
Wouldn’t that make it easier? Unless you’re not playing the game, some stat is going to be higher. That end was anticlimactic anyway.

Honestly, I was always dissatisfied with how the Enclave has been portrayed in Fallout as a whole. Fallout 2 gets a slight pass since if it was Obsidian behind Fallout 3, I imagine the Enclave would have gotten the Super Mutant treatment.
I.E. they were the main antagonists in the last game, but here you see them operating on their own foundations and interests, many of whom don't have to be your enemies. Or hell, maybe they would have just been the main faction to follow and you would have seen that for all Fallout 2 shows them being ruthless and evil, they (like most people) are a bit more complex than that.
But that idea is too complex for poor old Todd. No wonder the Institute is the "bad" faction

That’s all equally terribly written as convincing someone to give up on there goals because the government they knew was illegitimate, is in fact illegitimate. The illegitimate government he rebelled against for the purposes of rebuilding America and bringing prosperity to the wastes. All of which is contingent on activating and controlling the purifier. You convince him to completely abandon everything he’s worked towards and throw away his goals, because the robot he rebelled against technically wasn’t elected.
One you completely make someone give up on everything they believe and worked for on a technicality that doesn’t factor into anything there doing. And the other you convince to retreat knowing they fully plan to return stronger and more prepared with advice you gave them. You don’t defeat the legate, you kick him down the road at the cost of making him a more dangerous threat later.

The famine is never mentioned as neither is the blockade because new vegas doesn’t grow its own food.
Obsidian cut the time down to only a month left so the epilogue that you see changes in map doesn’t happen.
It was then a ending where they say stuff happened.
The few few times it does matter is when characters appear such as the farmers go to Boulder City and so on if the farm is destroyed.
It also does stuff like 76- you can pull tank with factions. In 76 if you are enclave you can pull general status to order stuff from robots and so on.
The change in new vegas is similar to 76, although the map doesn’t change thanks to Obsidian.
Check Chris Avalon on Obsidian they were struggling to pay employees while slamming phones down on requests and bragging about it. If this was mentioned ‘your obsidian founder privileges could be revoked’ and let’s not mention the obsidian lawyers threatening Chris for going to another company.

After all - all Autumn really says is this: "Once this facility is operational, the masses will flock to the Enclave for fresh water, protection, and a plan for the future." which is exactly what the BoS do once you beat Take It Back! Sooooo, why are they bad again?

He's also a leading member of a faction that sets up military sites all over the wasteland with members who kill any wastelanders nearby, and experiments with using trained Deathclaws for similar purposes. Plus, kidnappings.
Also also, they only expressed interest in the purifier once there was an actual possible way to get it working. Where were they for 18 years when the purifier project was abandoned? How long would it take them to establish a foothold at the abandoned purifier and solve the problems? It took two scientists (James, the protag's father; and Jonas, as an assistant) *18 years* to crack it, plus however long James's travels after leaving the vault take. How long would it take a full science team with advanced resources to make those same advances? A few years?
Basically, the Enclave as a whole are isolationist upstarts who swoop in once everyone else has done the hard work, they kill people indiscriminately, and their hubris is an inherent negative to the vast majority of people.

In my playthrough, James trapped autumn in the purifier with him when they attacked and killed himself and autumn by overloading it. Is that something that changes based on karma?

Karma has no effect on that portion of the game. When it happens though you can see Autumn inject himself with something as the radiation kicks into high gear, can't remember if it's confirmed or not but the general concensus is that it was an experimental form of RadX capable of handling that kind of concentrated dosage.
Maybe the protagonist is tired of killing people since Butch once called him a goody two shoes.
Sparing him was never an option for me. He cancelled the research for Duraframe Eyebots, and caused Whitley to send ED-E all the way to the west coast.

It'd be cool for the to be a small faction in New Vegas like the brotherhood, or to even have them in the commonwealth, where you and your faction are facing off against the institute, and right before you shut them down the enclave shows up and you gotta work with the institute to stop them, or betray everyone and work with the enclave. But if you go the former then everyone would see how good the institute is

The only difference between this, and a good Karma playthrough, is Sarahs dialogue.
With negative Karma, it's implied he'll die no matter what.
With good karma, it's implied he'll actually be allowed to live if you spare him.
So the choice to spare him is meaningless? They could have put in some secret escape hatch or something for this exact scene but if you choose to spare him it's just a meaningless way of avoiding a fight?

The worst fallout villain is Ulysses from Lonesome road. He's basically a self insert for the writer to rant about things he doesn't like about the ncr, the legion and the post post apocalyptic world.
This game allows you to destroy the brotherhood in its dlc, but not join the enclave in any way. Always found that to be nonsense, surely there's enough nuance to justify the choice to join.
The Enclave is one of the few factions that would likely *never* take in outsiders. Certainly not the more xenophobic branches. Their whole viewpoint, as expressed in Fallout 3, is that they are the inheritors of the country and everything currently in it is inherently corrupted and must be wiped out at all costs. It only makes sense as a player faction if you were actually born into it.

I kinda hope that Autumn survived canonically, I don't think he was completely evil, and if he or his ideas were to live on, it would make for an interesting version of the enclave, should they ever resurface again.
Instead of just blindly killing everyone, they do start to become a little more reasonable and tolerant, although very much still anti-mutant and aiming to revive the US government.
I don't want flat out black or white factions, the enclave have a lot of potential as more than just 'the baddies'.
Plus the enclave objectively have the most badass armours and that's reason enough for me lmao.
