It's great that you got to Lexington a few days early. I'm from Dallas, and I absolutely just love the Bluegrass area of Kentucky. I've been there several times and have toured a lot of the major horse farms. I've never flown into the Lexington airport before. It is indeed smaller. I used to fly into Louisville or Cincinnati and then drive to Lexington just because the flights were direct and the airfare a lot less. The Cincinnati airport is actually across the river on the Kentucky side.
What you were seeing there was the largest Thoroughbred Yearling sale in the world. This sale will go on for at least two weeks, and I think you were there on Day 3.
I watched the videos of the horses that brought over a million dollars on Keeneland's YT channel and then read about them on The Bloodhorse website on Wednesday. Incidentally, you happened to catch on video one of the biggest buyers of horses during these first three days. The man who walked in at 12:08 and then sat down at 12.13 wearing a light-colored plaid shirt and jeans with the partially bald head is Douglas Scharbauer, owner of Valor Farm in Pilot Point, TX, which is about an hour north of Dallas. It is the nicest Thoroughbred farm in Texas, and I visited it many years ago.
The reason I knew that was him is because The Bloodhorse published a photograph of him on Wednesday and wrote an article about him. The two men sitting to his left were his current farm manager and the prior one that retired two years ago. They helped him select the horses that he bought. On that day he bought four horses total, including two fillies by leading sire Gun Runner, including the co-session-topper Hip695 for $1,050,000. He also bought two other Gun Runner fillies on Day 1, one of which sold for $1.5 million. During these first three days, he purchased a total of six horses, four of which are the fillies by Gun Runner, which is what caught the eye of the reporter from The Bloodhorse who interviewed him. His parents bought and raced 1987 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner Alysheba, which was the Eclipse Champion Three Year-Old Colt that year and Champion Older Horse and Horse of the Year in 1988. (I later saw this horse and his nemisis Bet Twice who beat him out of a Triple Crown in the Belmont when they were both standing at stud at Lane's End Farm in KY.) Mr. Scharbauer's maternal grandfather also had a Kentucky Derby winner in the 1950's, so he's a third generation horseman.
Sorry for the long post. I just thought that was interesting for the short while you were there you just happened to video one of the biggest buyers at that sale. Of all the articles in The Bloodhorse so far he was the only photograph they have shown of one of the buyers sitting in there, and of course the only one whose farm I've actually visited to see their stallions. I've never met him but did meet his farm manager and talked with him over the phone about breeding a mare there in the past. I was a small-time Thoroughbred owner and breeder for a while, but it's been over twenty years ago, and I have actually rescued OTTB's as well.
Be sure to visit the museum, the Parade of Breeds Show and the Hall of Champions Show while you're at the Kentucky Horse Park. They're not to be missed.
I look forward to seeing your other videos later in the week at the Mustang show. Have fun!

My horse was bought off the Caliente track with an injury. My riding instructor bought him. I walked him on a lead for almost a year while he healed, then graduated to lungeing, then finally I was able to ride him. When my trainer decided to sell him, no one told me. I came out to exercise him and he was gone. Apparently, everyone knew but me. I found out who he sold him to and went to them to see if they'd sell him to me. I had been saving all my lunch money, babysitting money, odd job money from the time I was in first grade, and that's what I bought him with. That crazy cryptorchid giant, who thought he was a lap dog, saved me.
I am not a fan of horse racing. I lived next to the Del Mar track for a while, and saw and heard too much. And unfortunately I've seen several horses, young horses, have to be euthanized on the track.

    • @Groundedsquirrel
      @Groundedsquirrel หลายเดือนก่อน +4

What a story! To come to walk him and he’s gone. Something similar happened to e as a kid but I wasn’t as lucky (sounds like you managed to buy him off the new owner?!!) as for living by the track and seeing the worst of it, so hard to bear. These experiences make caring horse people. The negative treatment of horses has led me to a passion for rescue and horse centered training - though I live vicariously through you tube videos. Curious if this will lead horses back into my life somehow. Best to you.

Girl, you are practically in my backyard! lol! (Not really, I live in Ohio---but I know where Keeneland is, as well as the airport, obviously) Thank you for the Covert Peek into high stakes Thoroughbred Auction action. It was interesting to see, as a one-off. Why not? And I agree, there are lots of "reclaimed" racehorses that get rescued and retrained for eventing and so forth. Kentucky has a huge span between areas with money, like the horsey set of people you are witnessing----and then the utterly desperate and barely scraping by folks.

I've seen the Keeneland sale on video, and in person to watch the Del Mar sale before. It shocked me, the first time, that a TB could sell for more than a house with acreage. When you think how easily they can be injured or how many horses die on the track for numerous reasons like not letting knees and lungs mature enough, or over use of Lasix, or one injury ending their racing career(and the possibility of earning back the inital cost), it's nuts. They are beautiful, but, I'd rather have a home and a less expensive horse, if, in some imaginary universe, I had the choice.
I was looking at the competitor list and program for the Mustang Classic today. I thought maybe you'd enter a class, but your not on the list. However, Project Equestrian is mentioned twice. Maybe it'll bring some business your way. Also, I was pleased to see prize money for each place, not just first.

Lexington is a world of it's own. I have been there a lot photographing dogs and some horses for commissioned oil portraits. Most of the clients were in a single zip code and although nice I always felt out of place and relieved to drive 3-4 hours home to muck my modest barn and be home with my horses. Most didn't own horses, just parts of syndications and had high end art everywhere and framed halters. My husband and I had an arranged tour of the Sheik of Dubai's farms for photo reference. Not a shaving allowed on the stallions paraded for foreign speaking stud fee buyers standing watch. The sculpture of almost life sized racing TB's at the Thoroughbred Park downtown is fun to walk thru and Crossgate Gallery is international quality with a focus on TB Sporting Art. I was lucky to have some work there. Every road is lined with that expensive 4 board fencing, but be watchful as the roads are narrow with deep ditches beside them! The Horse Park is an experience too! The novel "Lexington" is an enlightening, excellent read about the history and well written, by Geraldine, Brooks.

Just because I've had experience in both worlds and actually moved here. Because I was wanting to do the cold start. Competition with Wrote to the horse ended up working at kingland where I work Spring and fall. Just for the simple fact that I had to do my cancer treatments in that pulled me out of these competitions, but I still had to work quite is a different 2 worlds, but both have the same outcome. We're all trying to make. It horses better. We actually have a Mustang. We picked up for a pony Rider and this must thing will be at Keenland Hopefully next fall so both Worlds will be Colliding , as the hundred and twenty five dollar horse , we'll be Leading the million dollar horse To the The track.

But that doesn't mean that you don't belong. I saw several other people dressed the way you were. Maybe you were misreading the people working the auction, who are looking for buyers, so they're trying to look at you just to see if you're going to put in a bid. I had to do a double take of the horse at 20:00. He is spitting image of Seabiscuit! It blew my mind to realize that a horse I grew up idolizing raced almost 100 years ago!

Without racing there would be no Thoroughbreds. Horses get injuries in every discipline, on trails and in the wild. Horse Plus euthanizes mustangs they get trailer loads via their new buyout program that has activated flippers, the extra wild ones that jump the fences are most likely SA mustangs directly from BLM corrals, and none of the mustang rescues Horse Plus turnes to is offering any help, so they put them down. True sob story as this is mostly mustang channel.

Such a foreign world to me. It felt so sterile in there (how do they keep the horses from pooping while they are on “stage”?) The percentage of white older men to anyone else on film seemed about 85 / 15. Perhaps you were drawing attention because the other women there were either in the reserved bidding area or working there? Honestly it may be unusual for women to be there alone. I am not familiar with Kentucky or the racing world but I am curious if this could be part of it. Also your vibe is “someone who cares about horses”. I agree with you, not a fan of racing. Was it just me or did two of those horses rounding the corner of the small walking track seem stiff or lame in the hind? I am no expert but something looked off. For the most part the horses seemed calm. They sure are beautiful. I feel for them. Are you going to the “breeds barn” in the horse park? I saw that in a video once and would love to visit some day.

These horses are extremely well taken care of. They are trained for months by their consigners for sales prep. They get used to being hand walked and shown to potential buyers, turned and walked back and forth at the barn and then asked to stand still and stack where all four legs can be seen. Some may also go through a lot of vet checks by the vets hired to look them over. Mainly they are doing scopes to make sure they don't have any physical breathing problems. Their legs have already been x-rayed by their consigners in advance and all x-rays are online, and the vets go in there and look over the x-rays on line before the sale. So none of these horses have to stand for numerous x-rays by each vet as it was done many years ago because now everything is digital. So that takes a lot of stress off them.
The horses are also given a lot of time to rest and lay down in their stalls at the barn. Any discomfort that you may observe is just from the very few minutes they're in the sales ring because the auctioneer and others are just behind them. That's the first time they've been in there, and most of them handle it quite well. That one colt called out a lot, but most of them do not or maybe only once or twice. As soon as they walk out of the ring, they go back to their barn calmly and rest.
