The sound that you don't like, is the sound of a PERFECT heat treatment on a carbon steel. If the steel makes that low pitch sound, and the steel trembles in your hands, that means it's a really good tool, that will never fail and will always perform great! Not many tools, are made as good as many years ago, so I always appriciate them when I find them. I guess some people don't understand, how important your videos are. I also like your humor a lot!! Keep it up!!

for whatever reason their shovel is super popular, i hear the older models werent nearly as tough
@@davidp6913 It's because it's a copy of the original Spetsnaz shovel. Spetsnaz are the special forces of Russia. It is considered the best military shovel, thus the best portable shovel. It's very versatile, it can be used to chop like a machete or even as a throwing knife, or I guess throwing shovel is the proper term! Great for camping, or survival kits for emergency and so on.
This design is copied a lot, there are Titanium versions of it, but I can't recall who makes those!

The thought of how insane it would have looked to a random person passing by to see a man in camo and a gas mask chopping a steel pipe with a small shovel over and over again makes me laugh.

I've had several of those shovels. They are tough and useful. Besides digging they throw well and sink deep.
and don't forget, it is a Zombie-Killer-Machine!!

I work way out in the Arizona desert, one night on nightshift I was working on some cables next to my work truck and felt something starring at me. Felt unsettled. Could not have a firearm on me due to the job, but I had this shovel. Held onto it for a few hours as all I had was that and Jesus. Coworker finally came over and drove around and found a mountain lion laid up in the rocks about 100 or so yards from me. Could see its eyes, head, and upper body with truck headlights. Still had a job to finish but I kept this shovel close. I know I would probably loose 1 on 1, but it made me feel better knowing I had a chance at killing it or breaking its jaw. I keep it in my vehicle everywhere I go since that night.

Surely if you’re out there on your own, working unsupervised, you could at least carry say a Glock 26 or something. No one would ever know or have to know unless you had to save your own life with it.
@@peacefuljeffrey He probably could have gotten away with concealing it but if you're at work, especially if you're with co-workers or in a work vehicle, it's a risk and hassle. I wouldn't want to have to take on a mountain lion with a melee weapon but the shovel would be better than most. A lucky wack in the animal's face and you might come out on top, if you could see or hear it coming of course.
That is my favorite survial tool !!! I own about 6 of them. The handles will break throwing them when you least expect though. Easy enough to make a new one in the field using the shovel head.

I've used mine to split logs at camp and they also can be thrown with some real accuracy and I paid 30 bucks... best tool I've ever bought, just don't go hitting rocks with it unless your trying to scare off some dogs

i bought this shovel a few days ago, noticed the ringing sound, and wanted some confirmation bias that i made the right purchase. seeing someone try to destroy something and failing, i think really goes to show how durable it is. there are so many people who don't do like a full on good torture test on their gear on youtube, so i think it's really good that you are offering that service, so i don't have to, and so that i'm saving money on any potential gear i would try to test to the breaking point, and sadly succeed at.
it is one of the best shovels i think, and Zombie proof!!!
I carved the end of the shovel handle into a ball. Scraped off the polyurethane and applied red wood stain and boiled linseed oil. The handle was press fit into the steel shovel head, so I sanded down the part of the wooden handle that met the shovel . Sharpening one side of shovel to be used as a knife and the other an axe grind. Love your destruction test of this tool and you Russians made a mark in this world with this design.Thank you I was going to buy a Russian surplus one but the Cold Steel is so much better.

I found one of these in poor cosmetic condition at a yard sale for $2. It cleaned up nicely, and resides in my pickup for emergencies. I don't anticipate using it on anything harder than ice or bone. BTW, hand-to-hand combat trainers will tell you it's kinda stupid to throw away your weapon.

you won't regret it, unbelieveable strong, i have also the longer version, the Spetznaz Trench Shovel, i like this one better, because of the longer handle, the rest is exactly the same!

Amazing how much abuse it can take, I would have thought edge would dent or roll a lot more and the wood handle was going to brake. Impressed by how much abuse a lot of the cheaper cold steel products can take.

I read some reviews of the old shovel and people said it was a semi soft steel but Im 99% sure cold steel hardened it after it got popular on Alone

The funny thing about the Cold Steel Special Troops Shovel is that every Marine has one! The second thing that’s funny is that a shovel is used as a super-universal tool and weapon, which by definition it cannot be! It can be a crappy weapon or an ax when everything else is lost or for some reason cannot be used. And it doesn’t dig as comfortably in everyday life as a full-size traditional American shovel with a sharp nose, three times the working part and a handle longer than a yard, which is comfortable to grab with two hands. This product is for digging a trench in a prone position and in a situation where the enemy is shooting at you.
The real name of the tool is a small infantry shovel. This product, even in the Soviet army, turned out to be much more successful than the bayonet for the Kalashnikov assault rifle and much else that was used there. Moreover, in different years and at different factories, these shovels, bayonet knives, machine guns, tanks and other things differed greatly in quality! Moreover, at other plants, the quality of products could differ from shift to shift or from inspections carried out.
Cold Steel chose a good version and produces a consistently good small infantry shovel. Which did not become a Jedi saber after that. No matter how much advertising tells us otherwise.

Could you revisit this? Try to break this using it as a prybar, open a metal gate, or to shovel rubble.

Liked the jenny wren one yesterday as it's very similar to the böker micro hawk designed by Dj Urbanovski, even the green handle scales are similar, ( handle ergonomic perhaps better for forward facing but crap for back spike on boker) both SK-5 , so that was good to see. This one is interesting, also.
Besides the Spyderco Szabo/ warrior hawk, it'd be interesting to see how long it'd take till the Gerber downrange fails, as it's a 420 stainless and I'm sure many reviews proclaiming it an ideal fireman's tool are bogus.. anyway, cheers...

the handle needs to be oval in cross section, like a hatchet. then the thing wont torque your wrist so badly at impact and your strikes will be more accurate.

Damn good shovel. I've used one for years. Know what would be the ultimate Cold Steel torture test? The Cold Steel Warhammer. Too bad the new owners decided not to make it anymore. I bought one of the last on Ebay.

@@joex One in Prauge for $100 plus shipping looks like. Yes, I had the earlier smooth hammer head and now I have the nasty waffle head. I used resistance tape, spun it into cord and spiral wrapped the handle. First time I tested one I shoved the spike into an abandoned 1970s Ford station wagon, pulled it back and it opened it up like a sardine can. Amazing weapon. Loving your vids.

You're just banging the shovel on the car, not hacking with it. Such strokes are good for a knife, but for a massive device like such shovel, axe or sword you need a better hacking technique.
