Our symphony orchestra consists of around 80 members, equally divided between FU students, TU students and external students and alumni, some of whom have been with us for over 20 years. We think that's great: It's the mix that counts! To make sure that every instrumentalist has something to enjoy, the programme is very varied. If we rehearse a purely orchestral programme in one semester, the next semester we rehearse a joint programme with the choir.
Stylistically, we also work on a wide variety of works. In addition to the Christmas Oratorio, which has become a tradition, we also work on works from the Romantic and Modern eras in particular. The sections are regularly coached by professional musicians. We are always on the lookout for new challenges and not only dare to tackle the great hits of the orchestral literature, but also take part in competitions, such as the very successful German Orchestra Competition in Ulm in 2016. In 2021, the symphony orchestra will once again represent the state of Berlin at the German Orchestra Competition.
The togetherness of the orchestra is also very important to us. Regular beers after rehearsals or concerts in the Berlin Philharmonic are just as much a part of this as barbecues in the individual sections. Concert trips (preferably to the seaside in the summer) are also a must.

Under the roof of Collegium Musicum Berlin, some 450 students and staff of Freie Universität and Technische Universität are gathered to follow their shared passion for music. With most of the musicians having no professional education in music, our two orchestras, two choirs and one big band take great pride in their high level of achievement.
