I spent the majority of yesterday looking for a tutorial this comprehensive - thank goodness for you! So detailed, truly ‘step-by-step’ and it’s wonderful that you don’t assume the viewer is an expert at the software (a major issue of other videos I watched). You’re fantastic, keep up the good work!

This helps me so much... Taking the silhouette of an image may also help for those that don't have a very artistic hand eye coordination. Thanks again.

Heather - thank you SO much for making this!! I have watched this several times already and need to watch it a few more to really get it. I was using IbisPaint but this app is way better for Cricut users I think - I just need to learn my way around it and how the paths work. This is the MOST helpful cricut tutorial I've watched yet. Thank you again for making it!!

Yay!! I'm SO glad you like it!! I am thinking of making a video where I compare the different vector programs. By the way, I wasn't sure if I went too fast in the video. I didn't want to make it too long. Do you think in the future it would be better to have a longer video, where I go more slowly through the steps, or keep the pace as-is? (Also, don't forget to download the PDF, I have the steps written out!)

@@HeatherCashArt I don't think you went too quickly! I would definitely be into a video that compares different vector programs and bonus if it also goes over the most useful functions. I have been using this Vector Q app you recommended to play around with vectorizing photos and images but then I get stuck with the "edges" layer - I'm not sure what/how to use that layer but I clearly need it. Your reference sheet is super helpful!

@@leahwyatt thank you!! In general I don't usually end up using the trace function even in Adobe Illustrator, because it just always ends up better if I trace it myself by hand (like using the pen or brush tool). There have even been times where I'm like "let me try THIS time because I don't feel like doing it by hand" but every time I end up getting annoyed and just doing it by hand ha ha! That said, that might be another good video idea, to go over the best way to image trace!

What a great tutorial :) I reckon you also may enjoy Procreate as this will help you bypass a lot of the ‘processing’ of the pathways into vectors (it will assume this for you) - it also has a great mirror feature so it can replicate your drawing pathways and save you time in duplicating :) also a one-time payment that I’ve been really enjoying the pay-off from! Haha! In saying this, I really love your style and how it’s all turned out!

Hi! I do use Procreate but for other things like children's book illustration. Procreate is not ideal for drawings for the Cricut because it doesn't draw in vector. If you use Procreate, then you'll have to save as a PNG and bring it into design space and have Cricut design space convert it to vector for you, which may not turn out exactly how you want it. A lot of times I find that the corners are not very sharp and the details don't come out great.

Hi Heather! Super helpful video! I’m seeing a lot of people on the cricut pages I follow on Facebook post their completed projects of layered dog mandala designs that they purchase on Etsy. They’re always generic ones of well-known breeds but my dog was a mutt and looked pretty unique. I’d love to learn how I can take a photo of him and turn it into a mandala image. I apologize if you already have a similar tutorial to this that I haven’t seen. Would love some help - thanks!

Ha ha, well I don't believe inkscape has an iPad app unfortunately. Vector Q is the best I've found for the iPad. (Illustrator for ipad is probably better but I have an older iPad and illustrator is suuuuper slow on it)
Are you using a computer or tablet?

Thank you so much for your tutorial.exactly what I looking for. You’re awesome .I have one question ,can I use procreate to do a same thing like this apps did?I got a procreate but still learning how to use it. I want to draw my own mandala design . Will you made a tutorial about how to use procreate to do some similar stuff? Or you will recommend I get this apps to use it over procreate ? Thank you so much for your time😊👍

    • @HeatherCashArt

Hi! SVGs are vector, which is best for Cricut, and Procreate doesn't draw in vector. Technically you could use procreate if you draw it at a high DPI and save as a transparent PNG... But if you are selling it online people usually look for SVGs. So I would say yes if it's for personal use, but 100% I would recommend drawing in vector if you intend on selling it. Also, technically you can use a converter that traces the PNG and creates an SVG out of it, but I have never ever found one that worked perfectly for me. I always just end up tracing by hand anyways.
That said, I could do a procreate tutorial for some of these things, just in case people want to go that route. Thank you for the idea!!!
