Why I Stopped Taking Art Seriously (Yayoi Kusama Made Me Do It)

  • What happens when a perfectionist artist visits Yayoi Kusama’s Melbourne exhibit? They make a Valentine’s card of their dog. 🐶 In this video, I share how Kusama’s fearless creativity inspired me to stop overthinking and start making silly art. From her iconic polka dots to her 2,000-painting hustle, I’ll show you how I translated her mindset into a cutesy card and sticker set -and why it might just be my most fun work yet.
Whether you’re a freelance artist, art student, or just someone who needs a creative reset, this video is your reminder: Art doesn’t have to be serious to be meaningful.
    📌 In this video:
A tour of Yayoi Kusama’s Melbourne exhibit (and the moment I snapped).
My process for designing an adorable Valentine’s card.
Why creating for joy-not perfection-is the ultimate rebellion.
    🎨 Supplies I used:
Holbein Acrylic Gouache (Rebecca Green collab), Canson sketchbook, MD sketchbook, Tombow Mechanical Pencil, Derwent ColorSoft Pencils.

💌 Tag me in your silly art! I’d love to see what you create when you stop overthinking.

I'm happy this popped up, because after just watching your sketchbook tour video a few minutes ago I was thinking oh crap she's so young and she makes so many cool images, and I'm 76 and drawing simplistic minimalist cute images. I usec to paint stranger stuff, but my favorite lately is a one line teddy bear with a hot pink border. But now you've unknowingly reaffirmed my pleasure in painting cute and simple.😂

Thank you for your lovely comment! Honestly I think I'm struggling with this a lot because I love cute stuff but the vibes at art school are really like *grrrrr be serious 😡* and that just doesn't always work - it really creates a tension in my mind that I'm trying to be mindful of and undo a bit. A one line teddy bear with a hot pink border sounds wonderful, very fun! Have you always made art?
