An outcry came up as the Madrigals searched for what remained of Mirabel, their greatest joy. But she was no where to be found. For a year, the Madrigals stayed in mourning. Although their gifts returned, no one used them. They had cost too much. They had cost Mirabel too much. Bruno took to his tower, thinking events over in his mind to find where it had all gone wrong. Antonio refused to speak at all, remembering how Mirabel always made time to chat. On the anniversary of Mirabels death, Abula picked up the candle and looked at the design, at her granddaughters laughing features immortalized in wax and made her choice. Abula: Casita! I ask for an exchange! The house lifted a few tiles in response. What are you asking for? it seemed to say. Abula: I want my granddaughter back. I don't care what it takes. We need her, Casita. We need her so much. More than we need me. The house shivered slightly, in refusal. Abula: Casita, you see what is happening? We are falling apart without her! This candle burns with her love for us. But we are being burned by our love for her. Please, Casita. Its the only way to save the rest. The house shivered again, more violently this time. Abula was about to protest further when the candle began to glow silver and the design began to change. She stepped back, fearful. Abula: Mirabel? What is wrong? No answer. The candle began to dissappear as it took a new shape. Wax flowed and swirled as Casita rattled on its foundations. Julieta: What's going on? Mama, are you alright? Abula: Something happening to the candle! Julieta gasped. Julieta: Not Mirabel! The entire family assembled in the courtyard, fearful of what was about to happen to Mirabels spirit as the candle slowly began to fade. Finally, the glow lessened enough to see what was happening. Antonio: Mirabel? Is that you? Mirabel laughed. Mirabel: That's right! Don't worry, Casitas still here. I just found a new way to hold our miracle. Bruno: But- you died. How are you back? Mirabel: You needed me. I've always come when called. Now what's all this silliness about not using your gifts? She laughed and talked with her family, healing each of their hearts and addressing their feelings and unspoken words. She then came to Abula. Mirabel: Hey, Abula! How are you doing? Abula: I'm sorry, granddaughter. I know what I did to you now. It was inexcusable- Mirabel: What you did? Abula, I love you no matter what. I made my own choices, and they did too.
