@@MelonMafia1 it is not imperial, it is of the old, pre emperor days. The day when humanity was divided into many factions that warred constantly against themselves. It is referring to one of the more powerful factions. The nation, of the United States of America.
This is why I love playing as the Guardsmen in Dawn of War. The theme for such an army is uplifting, motivating you to fight on, to hold the line at all costs, and when the Baneblade arrives, to crush the opposition with an iron hammer. You don't need a Commissar with a gun aimed at you, a group of Ogryn roaring behind you, a Vindicare assassin aimed down from afar. All you need is one good squad of Guardsmen, and the enemy is truly fucked. For if even one man is left standing to hold the line, they have already lost.
Imperial Guardsman: Thank the Emperor you're here! We thought Command forgot about us. Gabriel: How long have you been here? Imperial Guardsman: About a week. Gabriel: You held this position for a week, by yourselves? Imperial Guardsman: Yes, my lord. We've seen some freaky stuff top, come we'll show you. From Dawn of War.
I'm assuming that was allegory because there is always more then 1 squad Unless you misplelt 1 and meant 10000000 We are legion The emperor is with us and we can not fail
To actually quote White Dwarf when the second edition Imperial Guard codex was first released "The guardsman's lasgun isn't exactly formidable, but when about forty of them open up, some impressive holes start appearing in your opponent's lines"
@Anon emous Two, one to screw the lightbulb in, and the other to commandingly say: "It is an honor to serve for the Emperor." That does not however include the commissar watching over the both of them from a distance with a bolter set to auto aimed at them and the 300 other guardsmen keeping the fort in tip-top shape. Unless it is a debters world, in which case...well...just one in that case, the other one would be screwing in lightbulbs elsewhere paying off the debt he too is incurring for breathing.
What about vindicare assasins? They work and perform well alone. Some of vindicare assasin quotes from Soulstorm: *"I will do this alone!"* "Tell your men to stay out of my way"

Fun fact: the voice actor of the Dawn Of War Commissar also voiced M Bison in the 90s animated Street Fighter series. So that "YES. YES" M Bison meme is the voice of the Imperial Guard Commissar haha.
Its easy to be brave, when one is clomping around in about a half-ton of power armour, genetically enhanced to be super strong and tough, armed with a rapid fire rocket launcher and conditioned to litterally have no fear. But it takes being a weak, frail ordanary human, with only a flack jacket, a lasgun and the man beside you for protection, to be truly heroic. To quote John Wayne, "Courage doesn't mean you're not scared. Courage is being scared to death and saddling up anyway" and the guard does.
That's the appeal to me of the guard. The Space Marines are genetically modified, surgically enhanced, trained, indoctrinated, armed, and armored to a fare-thee-well. They're bred and built for future warfare. The Imperial Guard are armed with laser rifles, and armored with helmets, flak jackets, and guts. (Which become apparent all too often). I'm not a bioengineered superman... but I'd like to think I could be someone with more courage and dedication than brains....
It is not the mighty golden Warrior-Demigods of the Custodes that have ensured Humanity will survive. It is not the valor of myself and my brothers and cousins that has ensured that Humanity will continue to stand against the horrors of the Warp. How could it be? For all of our strength, we have been modified into perfect killing machines. We are not Human. We could not stand between the forces of Chaos and Humanity; we did not stand between the Arch-Traitor and the Emperor upon the Vengeful Spirit. That is our eternal shame, our greatest failure. And it is the greatest pride of the Guard, that between the traitorous son and the wounded Father, stood a Guardsman. The Human soldiers of the Astra Militarum are the ones that ensure that Humanity will stand strong, for they are Human, and they die standing.
The Imperial Guard may start off as more numbers than anything - Frail, scared, clumsy. BUT! Over time, they come to grow into an unstoppable force of hardened veterans and warriors, supported by the ever watching commisars, and with their mechanized might, these once puny humans grew and learned. You should have stopped them when you had the chance. Now they're here. And they're coming for you.
Eldar fear our wrath! Orks fear our strength! Necrons fear our determination! Tyranids fear our courage! Tau fear our honor! And Chaos fear our holy retribution!!!
The guard, while impressive, is not able to withstand the true horrific powers in the 40k universe in the long term unless another enlightened age were to occur. Though they would put up an excellent fight if no deities are materialized. Fully unified Orks, Awakened Necron or even the Tyranids would eventually corrode them away. Unfortunately. because the guard is my my fav :(
***** Well nobody can - the imperial guard is the bulk of the military and the marines are the elite - they fight together because just one of them isn't enough.

Pretty easy... Consider that like a private joke in the Guard. Most of battle our brave Guardsmen and Guardswomen fight are far worse than Stalingrad and Verdun together. (Take example on the battle of Vrak) So, for joking, Imperial Guards player, and other, say that kind of joke for fun ^^
As resident of Stalingrad I find this deeply insulting. Not only because real warzone is compared with fictional. But mostly because historical episodes like Stalingrad battle or Kursk's arc are inspiration for WH40k.
***** The rub is that, while the Imperial Guard can count on functionally limitless manpower, the trick is actually getting that manpower where it is needed. The Imperial Administratum can take litterally decades to act on calls for help from worlds under attack, sometimes centuries in fact and even if they were to act immediately with a degree of efficiency that is almost unheard of for them, the Warp is not exactly the most reliable means of faster than light travel... it just happens to be the only means of FTL travel available to the Imperium, so even when dispatched, Guard forces can take years to arrive, a few days, they could arrive before they were even sent out if the Warp really feels like trolling, or they may never arrive at all. Its really down to sheer, bloody minded law of averages, that Imperial Guard forces arrive where they are needed at all really.
A battle is written in this song. Here's what's going through my head: 0:00 - Planetfall. The ships have docked and are beginning to unload troops, supplies, and support teams. 0:18 - Platoon and squad leaders are being briefed by the commissars on the mission at hand: they must take that mountain being held by a Chaos warband. 0:36 - Deployment begins. The combat battalions are scrambled backed by the support teams. 0:46 - First blood. Combat begins and the first guardsmen and cultists fall to tank, lasgun, and artillery fire. 1:14 - The fighting intensifies, guardsmen and cultist are going down by the hundreds as the tanks on both sides blast each other to bits. Neither side is giving way. 1:34 - A breach has formed in the Chaos lines! But it's being held down by a couple of Chaos marines! But seeing no other way forward, the commissars call for a charge! 1:46 - Fighting begins in the breech. Hundreds more fall to the might of the Chaos warriors. But under the command of the commissars, the inspirations of the combat priests, and the sense of duty to the Emperor, the guardsmen press forward. 2:12 - It's working! The breech is getting ever deeper and deeper as the guardsmen pour forward and rapidly scale the mountain, slaughtering untold numbers of heretics. Even the Chaos marines show signs of uncertainty. 2:34 - By the Emperor they've done it! The peak of the mountain has been cleared, the heretics have been almost completely eradicated and the Chaos marines have retreated. 2:43 - The commissars order that the regiment banner flag be mounted onto the peak of the mountain. 2:50 - The flag is mounted as the guardsmen stand proudly around it, thanking the Emperor for this victory. 2:56 - Zoom out with the flag in the center of the screen. 3:03 - Cut to black.
Ah, I remember. The Final Battle of Accardcia. My Chapter had been scrambled for combat from six systems over. When we arrived, all we could do was hunt down survivors; the Guard had already broken the enemy.
the emperor and his remaing loyalist primarchs themselves would stamp you a badass seal of approval (gold/platnium purity seal) if he were able too! 😎🤘

Despite preferring the Adeptus Mechanicus/Knight Households combo on the tabletop (and technically Necrons), the Imperial Guard are my *Favourite Faction* in 40k. Because you have superhuman demigods of war, thousand-year-old fresh-faced recruits who have mastered the art of warfare to an extent impossible by normal human standards, people in armour and battlesuits which make their armour look like cardboard and their guns look like laser pointers, Football Hooligans/Fungusmen as strong as the demigods, Space Locusts capable of devouring a planet's biosystem in a day, and the literal twisted contortions of thousands if not millions of years of human and alien minds made manifest - and then you have the guard. Regular humans, barring some enhancements for some of the commanders. A force whose only redeeming merit in the eyes of their commanders is that they are expendable (for most of them anyway). A force for whom the *tanks are considered to be worth infinitely more than the soldiers*. Despite all of this, they step up and fight. They join the fray against all of the above, with their inferior weapons and training. They fight on despite knowing how little they matter to their commanders. Planets break before they do. THEY HOLD THE FUCKING LINE.

When I play imperial guard in any of the strategy games, I like treating the common guardsmen as more than just expendable fodder. Vary their loadouts to counter likely threats, give them proper vehicle support, pull them back when they're in trouble and reinforce them. It feels weird but I'm quite fond of setting a good example to my little digital soldiers.
that is heresy their sole duty is to serve as the front line of the Imperium and die so that the worlds of man do not fall and that duty includes being sent to the death by the billions they will hold no matter the cost or face the wrath of the emperor

Alone, a guardsman can do nothing.
But a guardsman is never alone.
To actually quote White Dwarf when the second edition Imperial Guard codex was first released "The guardsman's lasgun isn't exactly formidable, but when about forty of them open up, some impressive holes start appearing in your opponent's lines"
@Anon emous Two, one to screw the lightbulb in, and the other to commandingly say: "It is an honor to serve for the Emperor."
That does not however include the commissar watching over the both of them from a distance with a bolter set to auto aimed at them and the 300 other guardsmen keeping the fort in tip-top shape.
Unless it is a debters world, in which case...well...just one in that case, the other one would be screwing in lightbulbs elsewhere paying off the debt he too is incurring for breathing.

But you can't put a concept of bravery on the astartes as they don't even know what fear is.

When the Baneblade rolls out, you know its G fucking G.

The rub is that, while the Imperial Guard can count on functionally limitless manpower, the trick is actually getting that manpower where it is needed.

Here's what's going through my head:
0:00 - Planetfall.
Love it!

Miss me with that hashtag shit: I mperial G uard ftw.
