Thank you for your video. This is exactly what I need right now. I need to start pruning my watermelons planted in sacks right away to avoid dead or wilt leaves. Your practical display has given me confidence. I used to be scared in pruning so that I don't jeopardize or damage the plants. Very quickly...can I start pruning from the vegetative stage especially when discovering yellowish or brown leaves from the base? Your response will be highly appreciated. Thanks once again!
Your welcome and yes pruning from the base is good .. if your leaves are yellow cut back on the water... make sure to keep up with fertilizer every 2 weeks... keep the plant healthy and you will get delicious watermelon 🍉.. 🌱
I’ll try this next year - I always let two shoots grow and main vine - once each gets a pollinated fruit I top the vine after the fruit - I get 3 big watermelons per plant
It doesn't really matter -Watermelon Grower in Trinidad 🇹🇹 where it is generally 30 deg C every day. The leaves do help to keep the soil cool and help the plant make enough energy to produce those huge fruits though so don't go crazy with the shears! 🤗
Thank you for the video. Do you suggest pruning fruit growing on the same vine? In other words, should I have multiple smaller melons or focus on fewer but larger fruit?
If you have time in your garden to grow, do not prune out any fruit, let them grow.. Just increase your fertilizer And keep reapplying every 2 to 3 weeks and once you water every one to 2 days you'll be fine..
Do you recommend this method for pruning melons smaller than 10 lbs? for mini melons and icebox melons, how many per plant Should we expect? I would like good productivity w/out compromising flavor.
Yes you can , most plants typically produce about four melons.. most of the time the plant will just grow more vines and leaves way too much.. The most important thing with watermelon soon as you see a sign of a mellon ,make sure you add fertilizer and keep repeating every one to two weeks. Stick with a water schedule. Watermelon needs a bit more water if you're going to water in the morning. Stick with the morning time..
Your welcome, If you have enough watermelon on the plant you can prune off further ones out .. because typically watermelon plants produce 2 to 4 watermelons...
@@Greentgarden right now I only have 1 baby watermelon that the flower just opened today. I didn't know they weren't being pollinated. But my plant is covering a 7x6 trellis. I didn't know if it would help to remove some.

Thank you so much for your video. I live in Georgia and attempted to grow watermelon. I have like 4 vines and it stretches out every where. I am now going to try to prune the vines, fingers crossed the black tips will go. Thank for your info. Any advice on when to harvest cantaloupe? Thank you
I am sorry to hear that , Definitely increase the fertilizer and calcium ... Keep reapplying every 3 weeks.. Pruning will definitely help a lot... . Your welcome ..and yes once the color turns golden , It falls off the vine , When it's golden color and you softly move it, it should come Right off the stem ... Good luck and you got this ....🙏🏾🌱

T do you have any video on pollinating watermelon and cantaloupes? They don’t have lots of pollen like squash? Do you just rub the male flower on the female or is there another way? Same with cucumbers?
It doesn't work the best on watermelons because the lack of pollen but here's a nifty life hack I came up with. Most grasses have tiny hairs on their stems that resemble the hairs on a bee's body and pick up pollen really well and can be used similar to a cotton swab but better, free, and grows near the plant already usually.
Thanks for your video. How do you add fertilizer to the waterlemon plant and also i had a problem with magots in the watermelons ,do you know why this happens?
You could sprinkle some fertilizer on top of the soil which is the root of the plant or remove some of the soil and add some fertilizer on the need covered back up with the soil and then water... Try to place a piece of plywood on the need of your watermelon. Keeping it off the ground. Try to keep your garden clean.. You could do a mix of Hydrop peroxide and water in a spray bottle... It helps get rid of maggots....

Oh yea tomato cage is way too small, butternut squash grows over 10ft and grows lots of side shoots..try to find the root area where the plant begins, to prune off some , if you can't then the best way just let it run on the ground, this way you could still get some harvest .. thank you 🙏🏾🌱

@Greentgarden I just heard something about the first melon being a dummy melon, that you should prune off. Is this something you do? This is my first year trying to grow watermelon, so I'm a little unsure.
Lol please don't listen to that .. some watermelon plants will only produce 2 to 4 watermelons so you do not want to remove any.. I don't remove any watermelon 🍉.
So the same watermelon plant will produce male and female flowers. You take pollen from the male flower and apply to female flowers Quick video th-cam.com/users/shortsI1cOIC9daIA?feature=share
Love you informative videos. I used to live in Staten Island NY, so when you say you have a short season, you are spot on! I now live in SC. So my season is longer. I don’t have any ground to make a garden. I am gardening in large pots. I also have a raise garden box that I took of the legs to make it lower to the ground, so it is a long pot. I am growing tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, sugar baby watermelon for the first time. I am using tomato cages to help grow it vertically. I have to water 2 x a day for them to grow. Do you have any advice for me doing it this way, my plant are going crazy and growing amazingly. I also have many green figs in pots. If you would want one let me know. You would just have to pay for shipping. Do you grow figs? They are very good for you n the fruit is crazy. Let me know any info about these . Thanks
Thank you so much. I have never grown figs before.. maybe one year. I will try them.. From your tomatoes cucumbers and peppers growing in a tomato cage definitely highly recommend you must prune if you do not prune out some of the lower leaves or the suckers which is the side shoots it will get overcrowded.. If you're watering two times a day, it must be really hot...🥵 I believe once you do a light pruning you control the water and just keep up with your fertilizer every two weeks and you should definitely have a good growing production... Large pots are very good to grow into but you're right if it's super hot You're definitely right. There will be more water .. You could also prune your sugar baby watermelon ... Pruning helps a lot. You get a better air flow, less chance of disease and a better growth production overall.. I hope the weather gets better for you and your garden. Hang in there and keep up with a great job
Do you need a big pot for the watermelon I was going to use a tote but looks like your using small pots! So it’s just the runner leaves that are big. What do you suggest me putting under them cardboard or a fabric or just lay on ground. My first time planting
Hey bro the Vine that my watermelon is attached to is getting thin closer to where the root is. And it's the main stem, i cut off all the side shoots already. What is causing this and how to get the stem thick again.
That could be caused by many reasons. Make sure your watermelon is getting enough water every 2 to 3 days. Make sure it's getting enough fertilizer extra calcium.. Make sure the plant is getting about 8 to 10 hours of sunlight.. Prune off some leaves around the roof area to get better air flow... Add fertilizer every 2 weeks..
Yes .. Watermelon will grow perfectly in a container. You will need more water and more fertilizer in a pot, but you will still have a good growing production..
Do you allow more than one watermelon per vine. I've seen videos that say to prune off the vine just after the first watermelon because two melons on the same vine will cause both melons to suffer. What is your take on this practice. Also, how many vines to you allow per plant? It looks to me like you allow only one main vine. Thanks in advance for your response.
So I normally remove two to four , I normally leave a couple of vines as the plants grows longer.. If one vine grows two watermelon, I do not remove them because the plant sometimes only produces 2 to 4 watermelon.. If I have about 3-4 watermelon growing off the main stem then I prune out all the vines.. To me that just energy wasting and it will take a longer time to ripen up the watermelon.. .
Oh talking about that I have 3 plants growing small.. The rest of the okra plant some bugs are birds. Eat it out ... It was fast too.. .. I will do a shorts video
I’ve watched a few videos on this and no one actually showed the trimming and provided an explanation. When pruning the tomatoes I call it the arm pit aka sucker
Last year I grew my first cantaloupes. Every single one died or rotted. I followed all of the pruning and other caretaking videos I could find tending to that small crop of four plants. This year. I put the same soil mixture into a raised bed, stuck some Amazon seeds in the dirt and added some fertilizer and of course watered them. I've cut off some dead leaves here and there but other than that, nothing. For the past few weeks I've been eating cantaloupes that are near candy. I've been eating cantaloupes for 70 years and never had any this good. I'll bet there is a mile of unpruned vines in that raised bed, AND it looks like I'm going to get a second crop since they've bloomed again and I've got new baby cantaloupes on those old unpruned vines. You won't catch me pruning them ever again.
Oh nice... Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. I do appreciate it.. You're right, cantaloupe is one of the best. My favorite is the Minnesota midget. Really really delicious.. Enjoy your growing and harvesting.. thanks again... Happy gardening 🌱

Looks really nice BUT you'd make it so much easier on yourself by growing upwards. A conduit trellis is relatively cheap and easy to make (a 2 ft rebar in the ground (or whatever rods you have lying around), 1/2 in trellis over that joined at the top with a PVC T and back down another PVC T joint and conduit ending with rebar). Then do what you're doing up a string and support the melons with pantyhose or mesh like the bag you get oranges in. Two years ago I bought a pack of 10 Walmart knee high stockings, cut them in half and use them as hammocks, washing them at the end of the season. No chance of anyone stepping on your plant. Charles Dowding has a couple videos growing cantaloupe up a string. As soon as a melon has been pollinated he cuts off all but an inch or two of that sideshoot ending up with a stem loaded with nearly a dozen melons on it--just like they do with cucumbers but much more cool to look at. I grow my melons and watermelons vertically too but I haven't done such heavy pruning before. Can't wait til next year! Happy gardening!

Hey we are still watching bro, thanks for the info.
Awesome...I appreciate it .. your welcome And thank you.. happy gardening 🌱
@@Greentgarden Thank you! I really didn't want to do that! I'm quite relieved!
You're welcome.. 🙏🏾🌱
Question: do i have to pollinate the female plant with the male plant?
So the same watermelon plant will produce male and female flowers. You take pollen from the male flower and apply to female flowers

Do you mend just the soil where you make holes in your weed guard or do you mend the whole bed?
Just where I made holes
@@Greentgarden what would you say is a good amount to mend? 1 foot around the planting hole? sorry for the noob questions.
No that should be good .. 🙏🏾🌱
@@Greentgarden awesome thanks for the tips and great videos!
Welcome and thank you 🙏🏾🌱
Love you informative videos.
If you're watering two times a day, it must be really hot...🥵
I believe once you do a light pruning you control the water and just keep up with your fertilizer every two weeks and you should definitely have a good growing production...
So 5 Gallon containers or bigger , You could always use a piece of plywood , or a piece of fabric weed barrier... To protect the watermelon...
thank you, great video
Glad you liked it! 🙏🏾🌱
Good info sir
Thank you 🙏🏾
Im growing sugar Baby watermelon. I just cut off the regular leaves. Hopefully they will grow faster
Nice.. light pruning is healthy for the plant..
@@Greentgarden ok thankyou bro!!
oh and one more thing...i have the watermelon plant in a regular size pot. Not on the ground. Is that ok?
Your welcome
To me that just energy wasting and it will take a longer time to ripen up the watermelon..
.
Is honeydew melon pruning done the same way?
Yes absolutely...
Great video!!! 💚🫶🏾🍉
Thank you so much 🙏🏾🌱
What zone are you in?
Zone 7a .. Long Island NY
Can those shoots be rooted
I do not believe so..
please do a video on okra
Oh talking about that I have 3 plants growing small.. The rest of the okra plant some bugs are birds. Eat it out ... It was fast too.. .. I will do a shorts video
Thank you
Welcome my friend 🙏🏾🌱
I’ve watched a few videos on this and no one actually showed the trimming and provided an explanation. When pruning the tomatoes I call it the arm pit aka sucker
Nice... Thanks for sharing. Happy gardening! ,🌱

I am new and I see the mistake that I made this year. To many vines and couldn't water or fertilize the plant itself. Thank you.

Thanks so much

I cut the one with the fruit by accident…
I am sorry to hear , you will get more 🙏🏾🌱
You don't need to prune watermelon
Awesome...thank you for sharing with us.. happy Sunday gardening 🌱
Yes that sounds good ! Thank you so much for sharing this with us. I do appreciate and very helpful in your definitely right on that...
Every year I try to change up the garden. So hopefully next year I can try to do something like that ..
Happy gardening 🌱
@@Greentgarden If you have a reuse warehouse nearby you might check them out. I got most of my conduit, which sells for $5 each, for less than $1 each. That adds up when you have several trellises and tunnels.
Oh nice..that's pretty cool..
I will definitely have the double check on that. That's a really good way... Thank you for sharing this...
Have a wonderful Sunday 🌱
Me as well i love talking about PLANTS 🪴!!!!!!!!!
