Created as a companion video to my series of CARTOON EVOLUTION videos (specifically the 'Evolution of SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS - 21 Years Explained'), I take a look at the vocal evolution of Sheldon J. Plankton as we chart Mr. Lawrence's (Doug Lawrence's) vocal performance over two decades.

You can tell Mr Lawrence is having a ball when he does scenes of Plankton yelling or doing his evil laugh

I love how they did a callback to that in a new episode. Plankton’s son, chip, said goodbye and said he was going to college. Then he says “i went to college” and honestly it’s great to see easter eggs from the first 3 seasons
I've always loved when one of the writers or animation production crew becomes a voice actor in their own series. And it's even better when they become such a staple in their own show, they're hired on other series specifically as voice actors. Though in Mr. Lawrence's case, I've only ever seen him cast in Mighty Magiswords.
Rocko's Modern Life and Camp Lazlo.
He was part of the staff of Rocko and was good friends with Rocko's creator and was probably hand picked to join him for Lazlo. He was not part of the staff in Magiswords. Like how Paul Rugg was on staff for Animainacs and Freakazoid, but he's since appeared in other cartoons like Buzz Lightyear and Pig Goat Banana Cricket.

Plankton was originally intended to be a one shot character?! Thats wow hard to believe since he is such a big part of the show. I can't Imagine it without him. Edit: ( I do believe it I'm just suprised I wasn't being 100% litteral)
During the production of season one, Hillenburg demoted Plankton from a main character to a minor one; he insisted that Plankton would work better as a one-time guest star. However, Doug Lawrence loved the character. He summarized Plankton's origins in 2015, saying that he "was only supposed to be in one or two episodes, but I was a writer on the show and I really liked this character." Lawrence wrote episode ideas for Plankton and passed them to Hillenburg. From then on, Plankton began to appear more often.

Plankton was not the first to originally be a one time character. Steve Urkel from Family Matters and Corporal Maxwell Klinger from MASH were supposed to be one time characters too.
They were gonna cast Plankton as some celebrity too, but he kept pushing for it.
Yknow, I can respect Plankton. He's a married man with alot of ambition and drive. Sure things don't go his way, but he keeps on going! Also, he has some of the best screams and yells in the Nick business since Invader Zim!
Plankton is my absolute favorite character in SpongeBob, and even in post movie hes always been enjoyable for the most part

They were first on Rocko’s Modern Life where SpongeBob creator the late Stephen Hillenburg was the creative director on Rocko. P.S. the show was their first start as voice actors.
First movie: he's the villain
Second film: he works with the heroes
Third film: got no use for him.

@@stomper1232 yeah one problem that this film has is the oh hey remember that from that episode or that from the first movie and that thing from the second? Well geuss what we are doing that because we have zero originality at this point. Yeah the movie hasn't come out yet in the US but from what I saw from some reviews and one review from Canada (even though I'm an American and the film hasn't come out in my country) that literally just flat out said that not even kids like the film.
As someone with a dog Icon I can already smell this being a major flop seeing as how it had a budget of $60 million dollars and at the Canadian box office it has only made 2.1 million.
Nick Dorenkamp yeah I had an idea this was gonna be terrible as soon as they made a backstory of all the main cast being kids (which Squidward, Mr Krabs and plankton should be way older then spongebob and he never met sandy until he was an adult)
@@stomper1232 which also reveals that this movie was a cash grab and they immediately thought that hey why retcon everything that has been mentioned in the franchise previously.
Plankton is one of my favorite villains. He’s goal driven, has a cool voice, lots of gadgets, a traditionally cartoonish character design, is consistent and someone I both love to hate and feel sorry for at the same time. With all of these traits, it’s hard not to appreciate his character.
I love the animation on season 10 and 12 of SpongeBob SquarePants it looks more cartoony style that I absolutely love

I just realized when Plankton is Patrick's “conscience”, it's a parody of Disney's Pinocchio because of the outfits they wear. I think.

I love Mr. Lawrence in SpongeBob and even though his voice doesn't sound different but you could tell how it slightly softened if you heard closely
I do know that one of plankton‘s voice inspirations was Gregory Peck, which is fitting because he was a film, called Moby Dick in 1956

Even though Plankton is Mr. Krabs arch nemises and antagonist I really sympathize with him wheras I despise Mr. Krabs! Mainly I started to feel sorry for Plankton in the episode where Krabs tormented Plankton to the point of suicide by dressing as Pearl and scaring him!
