  • KLIM has just released their first motorcycle specific airbag vest in the Ai-1. This vest is an autonomous airbag system, used under a riding jacket, to increase impact protection in the event of a motorcycle crash. The operational components are manufactured by In&Motion - a manufacturer who has extensive experience and reach in action and motorsports including MotoGP (Aleix Espargaro and Bradley Smith, for example). You can learn more about this system here (www.cyclenews....) or by posting questions below for the Cycle News team to answer.

Bought one in the spring. It's very comfortable. I hope I never need it but having it on does give you a greater sense of protection. I never ride without it under a jacket. All gear all the time. AGATT.

From the Klim manual: "[Warning] The detection system uses the In&box’s
GPS signal to optimise triggering cases. When the
system doesn't detect or detects the GPS signal
poorly, the system’s degree of detection is not at the
level of performance achieved with an optimal GPS
signal-thus airbag triggering is not guaranteed."

Looks promising and love the new technology, having more companies in the game will make these even better and hopefully cheaper in the long run.

I’m holding off for a while because I’ll need 2 airbags. One for me and one for the missus. I like the entry cost for the In&Motion system used by RST, Klim, Furygan and Ixon. But I prefer the Alpinestars tech air 5 for rib and shoulder coverage. There doesn’t seem to be one system that ticks all the boxes for me yet. If money was no object, I’d get the Alpinestars but on a budget, the RST In&Motion version is most budget friendly.

For the money Klim will charge for it, you can have a Helite for yourself and outfit three buddies as well.

I currently have the Helite custom leather vest that I wear all the time, you’re right, the klim is too new to rely on it. For now, I’m sticking with Helite for fool proof, work all the time deployments. 👍

Not one Clue what parameters it activates under?? It they charge you $300 to recharge like Aplinestars does.. One of the most vital areas to protect are the ribs on the side..

The parameters it activates under are part of In&Motion's proprietary algorithm. They are constantly evolving it and improving it with crowd-sourced data. There's a lot of information after the link in the description on the video that can explain a lot for you (www.cyclenews.com/2020/01/art...). As far as coverage, and according to In&Motion's research, the thorax area of the body is the most commonly impacted area in the event of a crash--this includes the ribs. We've received a test unit from KLIM and will be wearing it soon. Hopefully not testing it to its full potential.
