  • The Klim AI-1 Airbag Vest has a lot going for it, but we know it isn't for everyone. We forgot to mention it is one of only 3 airbag vests approved for use in MotoGP.

    I've watched just about every review about this vest on TH-cam. This was by far the most comprehensive and informative overview and demonstration of the vest. Thank you and please make more review videos.

    Super comprehensive review and where other review channels didn’t inflate the system, these guys did. Kudos

    This comment is for @donschoppe , for some reason I don't see your comment on this thread but we wanted to make sure to respond. Will would normally be a size Medium in this vest, but the sample we had was a size Large. That being said it worked fine since on expansion it fills that extra space. If you were planning to wear base layers and heated liners under this vest and are close to the measurements in the size chart before the layers then you should be fine going up one size to accomodate. Hope you see this!

    Thanks for the thorough review. You indicated you’re chest size is 36” so I’m curious why you chose to wear a size large vest for the demos? Wouldn’t a medium vest be your correct size? Cheers.

    • @MotorcycleGear
      @MotorcycleGear  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Don, you are correct. A size Medium would have been Will's size, but the demo unit we had was a large so we made it work for the video!

    Does this negate the need for shoulder armour? And I wonder if it protects the sides of the rib cage

    • @MotorcycleGear
      @MotorcycleGear  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello Alexander, you can see the protection over the collar bone at around the 9:50 mark in the video. It offers some shoulder protection but not enough that I would advise not to wear shoulder armor in your jacket. The jacket does not offer protection on the sides/rib cage. The airbags inflate on either side of the main zipper up to around the collar and down either side of the spine. Additional back protection comes from the integrated back protector. You can see details of where the airbags protect at around the 3:10 mark in the video. Hopefully that helps clear up your questions, if you need anything else please let us know!

    I'm kind of between size S and M. Which one should I choose? They both fit me well, the S a little snug and M a little loose compared to the S, but not loose in general. The backprotector of the M feels a little bit too long, but I don't notice it sitting on a motorcycle, only standing up.

    • @MotorcycleGear
      @MotorcycleGear  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would recommend going with the size small. If the overall fit for both allows for the proper clearance on a full expansion of the airbag then you will want to go with the vest that fits the best. This way you can ensure the airbags deploy correctly and not in a loose position.

    Ok, so this was made in 2020. Has anyone had some recent experience with the airbag? Any drops and experience there? It feels so confusing -- its now 2022 and I still cant find a relevant video or article on actual results from wearing the airbag. Thats pretty sad. So someone please advise because I would love to get one -- but not unless I know the truth.

      I was in the same position, I eliminated the Dainese because there was no phone app for feedback.
      The Klim Smartvest is a pound lighter than the Alp*. But the Klim vest had the thickest cushion for protection when inflated and also was the fastest to get inflated and then stays inflated after a crash until you release the cannister (which I imagined would be beneficial if there were additional impacts). They both had a days worth of battery life in riding mode. No info was shared from Alp* on the crash history or their brain. Klim didn't make the brain, they collaborated with a company known for making crash inflation suits for Downhill skiers and Equestrian riders since 2014. Klim says the vest has been through two million miles of testing before intro. Their customer service team answered all my questions and said that they added an adventure mode and hope to have a track mode added by late 2022. In the end, the Klim was the best value as inflators only cost $100 and I can do them myself. Both Alp* and Dainese want $300 to change the inflator and it has to be done by a dealer. It would take five years of use to have the Klim vest reach the price for the other vests, including Klim's subscription to update the Brain automatically and the cost of one inflation event. Klim even gives the rider a 30 day grace period if you forget to pay your subscription (but it's way cheaper to pay for the year and then Klim allows me to put my subscription on hold once a year when it gets too cold to ride).

    Can anyone help me? How do you get the In&box out the vest? I need to charge it but it won’t come out, I don’t want to use too much force. Otherwise cool video, especially the sizing chapter!

    • @MotorcycleGear
      @MotorcycleGear  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello Ken, at about the 50 second mark you can see Will insert the system into the vest. When you remove the "brain" it slides out to the side about an inch and then comes up off the back protector. There is a cutout next to the ridges on the system. Either put your thumb on the ridges or in the cutout and push the system to the side (Away from the center of the vest/cutout hole) it should come out pretty easily. If you have more questions please call us at 972-842-4327 and we'll be happy to help!

      @@MotorcycleGear thanks for replying so fast! I did get it out, there’s this lock in the middle I wasn’t aware of, somehow I just tried it with the left hand (you can push it upwards) and then the brain thing came out supereasy. Prolly should have read the manual but it’s printed in really really tiny letters:)

    I have a 42 inch chest and 37 inch waist. LG the correct size?

    • @MotorcycleGear
      @MotorcycleGear  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As long as there is at least 5" of clearance between the vest and the jacket you are wearing! The size large vest would be the size that you want to go over your body, but your jacket would need to be at least 5" larger measurement than your chest to ensure proper inflation. Which means that when the jacket is stretched and measured, that measurement comes out to 5" more than your chest measurement.

      As long as there is 5" of space for the Airbag system to properly deploy then all should be good!

  • @sparkykolman
    @sparkykolman 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    What happens if you wear a jacket over it with less than the recommended expansion space? For a lot of fat folks, it's hard to find jackets that fit around the waist as it is, let alone enough with expansion room. Upsizing only goes so far, until the arms get so long the cuffs hang way below your fingers.

    • @MotorcycleGear
      @MotorcycleGear  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Sparky, thanks for your question. If your jacket doesn't have the space for expansion the airbag vest could bust a seam or zipper which would compromise your abrasion resistance. If your jacket holds up to the expansion then the air inside the airbag would be pressed to where it can expand which might be up around the chest or shoulders/back. That might be ok, or it might make it difficult to breath depending on just how tight it is. If that sounds like more risk than you want then I would suggest looking into an airbag vest that goes over the top of your jacket like an Alpinestars Tech Air 3, Helite Turtle 2, or any of Hit-Air's options : www.motorcyclegear.com/street/air_bag_suits_jackets_and_vests/vests/ Hopefully this points you in the right direction, let us know if you need anything else!

      Hi Ed, all sizes of this vest are in stock so I'm not sure it is impossible to get. And as far as expense, this is one of the cheapest airbag options on the market which is why we did the walk-through - to help people understand what they are getting for that money vs the more expensive options.
