    The "realism" is what I loved about Grimgar. Most Isekai have a fallback mechanism, restarting, invincibility, etc., Grimgar does NOT. Death is permanent (from what we know), no healer resurrection, making the trinity setup extremely important for protecting the healer. It also nails the "beginner zones" of what my mind remembers via nostalgia of vanilla WoW. Carelessness will come with consequences...

    • @IncaOIoana
      @IncaOIoana 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      All the time while watching Grimgar I was reminded of the first WoW vanilla dungeons I'd do as a noob. It's spot on party leveling. Only death is kinda final. I loved the show, and the novels I managed to find that continue the story.

      It's an isekai where they have to survive. The party has to get back to their own world. It's not even an mmorpg. They party is average compared to other parties. *spoiler alert* 3 people have already died from their party ( 1 was revived at the 11th level of the light novel). So I started watching Grimgar and whoever wrote this has either lost someone themselves or really did their research. Earlier this year, my best friend committed suicide. It took a while to fully process what had happened, but the biggest triggers for emotional release were when I thought about or saw others who I knew where grieving just as much if not more than I was. The way they had people finally break down and heal with something as simple as being able to hug another person hit me hard because that's exactly what happened with me. I broke down when I saw his parents and when I saw my friend Anthony who I knew was just as close if not closer to Cody. What I'm trying to say is that Grimgar nailed the grieving process.

      I loved Grimgar, but it didn't need a second season. The main characters' arcs were all completed at the end of season 1. Sure, they could've added new plot elements to keep the story going, and the writing was good enough that I trust they could've done it well, but I'll always take a concise, perfect 13 episodes over a bloated 26.

    I have to disagree with your opinion on the fights in the Prequels. For example: after Qui-Gon Jin is stabbed by Darth Maul, we see Maul become cockier then earlier. Yet Obi-Wan becomes more determined and collected, even though his master is now near-death. This says a lot about both characters. And when Maul can't out dual Obi-Wan, he uses to force to gain the edge he needs. Maul continues to tease Obi-Wan while he grabs Qui-Gon's lightsaber without him noticing and then landing the deciding blow which cuts him in half, ending the fight.

    • @Vanddark
      @Vanddark 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I was about to comment that, you can see that Obi-Wan full determination making a impact and Maul's having a hard time almost full defense mode walking back regaining his confidence and then striking again, and after losing half of the saber he retreats again regain his confidence and strike again. You can see the weight of their strikes because of the quickness, and loking at their face and breath means they are pushing their limit. The difference is that the prequels doesn't stop the momentum of their strikes and this makes it a little more realistic because they are masters on what they do.

      3 years late but the closest thing I found to the pacing of Grimgar with the beautiful mystical world is Mushishi. It is about a man that can see spirits traveling from town to town trying to solve the problems the spirits are causing. Trying to achieve harmony with them rather than kill them. No action, just lots of slow beautiful shots for you to take it all in as a form of nature we don't normally experience is placed before your eyes.

  • @lc9245

    Whoever directed this at A1 really needs to get a promotion or a spot light. The plot was well used, dialogues were slow and far in between to stress the emotion and information, not crap ton of dialogues ported straight from the book (though I would have preferred even less monologues). Action scenes are well done, fast enough to be intense and impress but not to the point of absurdity that were done to impress instead of to tell. Actions in stories should not be there to only show but also to tell. If actions are just filler between the story or vice versa, one of them must be toned down. There are very good balance between emotion story telling and action adventure element that was demonstrated well by the screen writing and voice acting. The original novel had already blended them so all the director needs to do is to make sure these story elements carry the impact that it needs to have and that was done very wonderfully. Another plus is A1 had improved in spade in terms of art. The art has much better emphasis on phantasy element and foregone realism in favour of a much more colourful and rich environment. They have gone a long way from Sword Art Online average environment, which is nothing to sniff at but this really puts them on the level of Gainax, Kyoto Animation, P.A.Works and the like. It's such a shame that other original contents that were adapted lost the gorgeous art that the artist had spent hours working on such as the works of Amano Kozue didn't get the treatment and these studios did. The world of Grimgar while lacking in iconic location or scenery that might burn into the mind of the watchers were extraordinarily impressive due to the masterful usage of the colour and light. It works really well due to the more natural environment that Grimgar has: ruins. caves, forests. The foliage, the water, the rocks are beautifully coloured and truly feels more like oil paintings than animation art. If A1 don't adapt ordinary works like Gate, SAO, Ao no Exorcist, Fairy Tail, Oreshura, Magi and instead being more choosy of their work they could really bring alive many low-profile but wonderful and revolutionary works out there. If you want to know other good story that got adapted by them there is Subete ga F ni Naru, Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso, Zvezda (original works, nothing special but impressive visually), Gin no Sajii, Shin Sekai Yori, Anohana, Boku Dake (it's not a good adaption of a good plot).
    Seeing how they made both really good adaption and really sloppy one, I suspect there's a lazy asshole director and another even lazier genius director working in A1.

      I disagree on the quality of grimgar fights, most of them are very badly done, lemme explain what i mean, the fights are badly planned according to terrain and area, characters move or attack a certain way, and when we switch view angle, they are in positions or zones which would be impossible for them to be at given their previous position, please watch the fights again, its horrible, i like grimgar but it has some really awful mistakes that should be corrected if they are to be given a second season.

    Glad to see I'm not the only one who noticed the weight in the Grimgar fights. Good analysis. Another great example of weight is the final fight in Sword of the Stranger.
    Also glad to see you bring in one of my other favorite franchises. Personally I think the sweet spot is a mix of the OT's emotion and the PT's choreography. Because the PT fights aren't totally devoid of emotion. When Obi-Wan runs into the reactor room after Qui-Gon's died, you feel the sadness and anger driving the ferocity of his blows. And one thing that's always bothered me a bit about Episode VI is how Luke beats Vader. He's putting a lot of power behind his blows but he's also swinging wildly, like Vader did on the catwalk in Empire. Except Luke doesn't have a suit to protect him. Vader should be able to hit Luke in one of those moments where his guard is down.
    The final fight in TFA was also sloppy, but that's justified since these characters aren't fully trained yet. I hope in Episode VIII we get to see that mix of emotion and skill finally achieved.

      +TheWWIFlyingAce I feel as though the final fight in Sword Of The Stranger was also how the environment was used, from the falling, movements, one opponent getting an advantage over the other, etc. The fight had buildup, weight, looked awesome, seriously, probably the best fight scene I ever saw.

    • @UnderTheScopeAnime
      @UnderTheScopeAnime  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TheWWIFlyingAce Agreed, a good mix is nice. I do think we'll eventually see that in the new trilogy at some point. I mentioned the end of the fight between Obi Wan and Darth Maul in my original script, but cut it. That's a good example of the PT getting emotion right (even if it is kinda ruined by Darth Maul standing there as Obi Wan leaps over him and slices him in half). Whatever happened to having the high ground? Lol. Also, I think in Ep VI, you can maybe explain that by Vader being taken aback a bit by Luke's ferocity. Idk I kinda had the same issue, but he's only swinging that wildly for a few seconds at least.

      If you dive into the SW world a bit more, it's a not as hectic as you think. Luke and Anakin both make use of the 5th lightsaber form Djem So. It's a very physically aggressive form with its trademark being that over head slash/hack. You see that specific move when Luke cuts Vader's hand off, when Anakin gets angry against Barris (spelled that name wrong, but she's Ahsoka's friend in the Clone Wars cartoon), when Anakin fights Assajj Ventress on the original Clone Wars cartoon, and some other spots too I believe. The flipping action that you're not a fan of is the 4th form Ataru. Yoda uses the hell out of it and Obi-Wan uses it in Episode I before he switches to the 3rd form Soresu as his primary. There are 7 forms that the Jedi use. It makes more sense when you bring in the fact that Jedi and Sith augment their physical abilities with the force.

    Grimgar is the kind of story that keeps you awake at night as your brain catch up with you at the emotional stress the characters were feeling and make you ultimately feel like you are part of their team as they fight to survive. It make you realize that no, you can't possibly handle that sort of trauma. This is the sort of story that make you feel reality in its fantasy. Magic, swords fight and all may look fun on the surface, but to get to the point where you realize that you either laugh or cry in that situation means facing this trauma over and over and over.

      If you really want more, read the LNs. Though be aware that the quality drops drastically after the arc the anime covers. It becomes a lot more... Anime-y for lack of a better term. You have things like Brie swiping arrows out of the air effortlessly with his sword, a character that uses a huge katana fighting a giant monster. It ditches the realism and emotional depth to be more hype. Though it gets decent again when Darunggar happens.

    The only thing im gonna talk about here is in Unlimited Blade Works, the only reason why Shirou "gains superpowers" is because he was inside his reality marble, what he believes while in there is reality, if he thinks he can jump a trillion miles into the air he can do it. As soon as he was out of his reality marble he was weak af.

    • @Thalanox
      @Thalanox 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      UBW's superpowers are 100% justified. Not because Shirou was in the reality marble, but because he was mimicking Archer. He's using strengthening magic on himself. The VN goes into a lot of detail on it. It's very difficult to do magic like that on living things, but the reason it's hard, and the reason Shirou can do that, and the reason he got so much better at that during the course of the story is entirely justified.
      Again, the VN goes into a lot more detail on how the magic works, and what kind of mental state he has to be in to use it. Shirou was basically a mini-Archer at that point. No match for a servant, really, but a bit faster at using magic weapons against gilgamesh.

  • @Skeleton-chan

    This is why games like Dark Souls and Monster Hunter appeal to me. That weight and consequence of actions makes every button you press a decision you have to think through in the mad scrum of combat. A very real sensation you would face in actual fights.
    Yes, Monster Hunter has obnoxiously oversized weapons and exaggerations everywhere but everything's heavy OR light where it counts. The oversized greatswords and giant lances are heavy and leave your tiny character reeling after every swing, it's only by following through with swings and strikes that they manage to flow one attack into another quickly, or use that momentum to roll out of danger,. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the nimble dual blades are able to swing multiple strikes in very quick succession, making up for their lack of power with more hits and more opportunities to hit safely due to faster attacks. They forego a shield in favour of a second shorter blade, which naturally removes the ability to guard against attacks but rewards a more reckless and aggressive playstyle that heavier weapons do not. Zipping under and around monsters, slashing constantly as they swing and miss trying to hit you, it's a VERY different experience to using something like a gunlance or greatsword... AS IT SHOULD BE.
    Dark Souls has a protagonist which is wholly inexperienced in actual combat with the wild overswinging of weapons and the generally sluggish and amateurish technique. It helps push the narrative theme of "you're nothing special" in this world of dragons and magic. Even the magic is slow, cumbersome and unwieldy. Difficult to aim and hard to use efficiently due to the long cast times. Wearing heavier armour on a weaker character tires your stamina quicker, severely impedes your mobility and makes it that much harder to manoeuvre around a tough enemy.

      Manato specifically makes a comparison between their situation and a "game" (though they say game, seen like the word in japanese refers exclusevely to video games), to which Haru asks him "Manato... what is a game?" and then the memory fades away from Manato, who can't explain the concept. This is a major theme in the first half of the season, with characters using word for things of our world, and then realizing they don't know what it is. In the Light Novel Haru even touches his pockes looking for his phone when he first wakes up, just to realize he don't know what a phone is...

    Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash definitely one of the best anime ever. overall quality is ahead of its time. totally underrated. 5 years later, still no quite like it. infact, talk about
    isekai, the genre adaptation become worse day by day. more ratio of bad adaptation, fanservices, low effort adaptation than good one. the art and music among
    the best of the best. the character development and emotional weight
    impact also among the best. it also shows realism. not all main
    character must be strong hero, know to fight since beginning. how to
    weild weapon is not easy for beginner. the monster they kill also not
    just emotionless sponge. how character live everyday in modesty, doing
    our usual, normal daily stuff also very cozy. it kind of reminscent of
    our real life. it also shows that everyday, normal, non flashy stuff also
    fun to be enjoyed. most importantly people might fantasized that they
    would be hero if get thrown in these world, but reality if it happened,
    it might be like how in the anime. struggle to live, every life matter,
    everyone is 'human'.

    • @zygo0
      @zygo0 8 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      +Selena C To be fair, sound design also plays a pretty big part in making something feel heavy. Majestic Prince and Knigts of Sidonia have some pretty damn good sound design, which helps give their models some oomph behind them. Even if your CGI is lacking, sound effects can make a pretty convincing argument in your favor. Episode 2 of the recent Bubuki Buranki had some pretty meh CGI for it's mechs, but the sound did such a good job of making it sound like the city around it was falling apart that you almost overlook the details.

    • @SelenaC_anime
      @SelenaC_anime 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I found the KoS sound design to be a bit too boom-y, nearly blew out my headphones at times. I also thought the only fight that truly used CG's 3D capabilities is the very first fight in the anime, everything else was meh. But I guess the weight problem isn't as bad because they're fighting in space.

    • @UToobUsername01
      @UToobUsername01 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      When you overuse CG it stops being realistic and breaks immersion regardless of how good animation is. When physical object bump into each other the brain can know if the two objects feel weighty by little subtle things like wobble the impact sound effects used, the strain on a guy's muscles holding the object, and body language of people holding things by the way they have to hold it based on the weight of objects. Weeaboos like you don't know shit about western stuff. Watch Conan the Barbarian movie from the 80s with arnold sqwarzeneggar to understand what I mean. That was a muscular german guy handling a real sword with weight and twirling it around, not weeaboo prop made from cardboard which you stupid anime nerds use when you go LARP on the weekends with your neckbearded retards who never trained in any real sword fighting and think sword from final fantasy 7 are possible to be weilded by a skinny armed blonde haired guy.... lol Fucking asian racist shit with slanted eyes. Open them eyelids for once and stop acting as if swords are cg objects by going to real sword training school and handling them for real. As a defense for the UBW ending, It takes place within Shiro's Reality Marble Unlimited Blade Works. In that reality marble his thoughts become reality without the normal cost of mana and prana that creating those blades would take. Likewise his physical abilities are augmented whilst inside of it since it is more or less his inner world. Its been awhile since I have seen UBW anime but the LN explains this well enough. Reality Marbles border on the Deus Ex Machina side of magic in the series but still have limitations. So it is flashy but within the universe it does make sense.

    • @jimbob1862
      @jimbob1862 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Actually even the reality marble explanation doesn't excuse why he suddenly started flipping around like Spiderman.
      In the original source material, the VN (there is no LN) Shirou invokes UBW and immediately runs into melee range of Gil, catching Gil off guard. This leads to UBW, which is slightly faster than GoB, negating Gil's spam whilst Shirou is constantly keeping him in a surprised and uncomposed state because he is bumrushing him with both a spam of weapons and a melee spam (with Gil's melee skills incredibly nerfed because he is in the Archer class). Shirou also states that if he let up for even a second, Gil would have immediately retreated and equiped his armour (something strong enough to tank Excalibur with nothing more than a scratch) meaning Shirou would have lost.
      Because Gil is always in this state of surprise and Shirou's negating his one trick, NP spam, he eventually resorts to pulling out Ea, but because of UBW's slight speed advantage Shirou cuts his arm off and is about to behead him until the grail intervenes to try and make Gil it's core (something also changed in the anime where it makes it seem like Shirou lost to Gil and the grail saved him).
      That's why many fans of the original VN don't like the fight, and why many anime viewers were confused, because they kept the core point of the fight whilst just amping the rest up to 11 with flashy moves and hype that made no damn sense. It's a cool fight but it isn't well adapted.

    • @FasterthanLight11
      @FasterthanLight11 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Oh course it does. Its a reality marble. Its a pocket dimension where the character using it controls everything. BEing able to control your jumping speed etc is not an issue. And since no prana or man is expended they could basically power themselves infinitely.
      Anything can happen in a reality marble as long its within the realm of comprehension for its user.

    • @jimbob1862
      @jimbob1862 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      No that's not reality marbles work. A reality marble is manifesting the inner world of a mage onto the real world, but unless the user's world has something within it that allows them to suddenly switch up their physical parameters like Shirou apparently did then they cannt do that. By that logic Alexander in Fate/Zero could have done the same thing with his reality marble, but he cannot. Reality marbles have a very specific purpose, as do most mages/servants in the Nasuverse. Nothing in UBW even infers Shirou could use it to physically amplify himself or alter the properties of the reality marble to allow him to jump so high.
      UBW is manifesting Shirou's world which is heavily based on his ideal (as shown with the differing landscapes between differing Shirous). It allows him to project with a limitless supply of projections, though his projections need to be based on materials he can comprehend and weapons he has seen, with broken phantasms that are the same strength as the original requiring more mana.
      Also, mana and prana IS expended. Very heavily in fact if you want to maintain the reality marble for longer than a minute or so because the world is actively trying to crush it to revert reality back to normal. And UBW does in fact use mana for projections, it just becomes almost non-existent which is why after invoking it Shirou can basically spam all his weapons.
      You're absolutely wrong on reality marbles. They are pretty aptly explained in the original VN and only allow for creation of a set world that defines the practitioner. They force everything in the field to obey it's rules, but only those rules. You cannot just rewrite parts of the rules because that goes against the point of reality marbles in the Nasuverse.

    • @FasterthanLight11
      @FasterthanLight11 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And in your inner world he wouldn't have the ability to jump as you please? Its YOUR inner world.
      I meant the prana and mana are not expended to project weapons directly which would burn through his supplies faster than maintaining a RM. Its like paying 5 MP a second to cast an infinite amount of magic for as long as you can afford 10 MP a second, that's a gamified explanation but that's the best way I can describe it.

    • @jimbob1862
      @jimbob1862 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No, you wouldn't. This is basic stuff that's explained in the VN, manifesting your inner world allows you to rewrite reality in the marble, but it's only a specific pattern designated by the person's character, magic specialisation etc. You cannot change those rules without changing your character, magic etc and that would mean you'd have to master everything again to reach the chance of obtaining another reality marble.
      Shirou's world was focused on his ideals and his projection, there was nothing in that which allows him to suddenly enhance his physical prowess to such insane levels. Hell, the only time Shirou physically got a lot stronger was when Archer's arm in Heavens Feel began invading him, which in turn set the reinforcement properties of UBW crazy and made his body slowly turn into swords.
      If there was say a magic user whose reality marble and magic was focused on altering properties (as an example) it could be conceivable that their marble gave them the ability to alter properties within that marble like allowing them to jump higher. But for Shirou or any other reality marble user? No way in hell.
      Also, yes, projection does still cost mana in UBW. It's just so small that it's practically non-existent (assuming he's only projecting swords since other items cost more mana) which is why he can still maintain UBW off Rin's mana whilst projecting so many weapons.

    2 of my favourite moments in recent anime that use this emotional weight would be episode 5 of God eater, the main characters realisation of how helpless he is and his inability to save anyone from, the black vagra. And the second being one punch man, saitama vs boros fight, specifically when saitama asks boros are we done here. Boros, like saitama has been searching for someone worthy to fight for a long time so he can once again feel the thrill of a real fight and feel alive once again, saitama being much stronger than boros holds back, attempting to make the fight last longer so boros can get achieve this. At the point where he asks him "are we done", the realisation seems to have hit saitama at this time that if boros is the strongest the universe has to offer, he himself may never get that one fight he's been searching for.

    about the things that shirou can do in the final battle, well i am a bit disagree with you. Yes if you only take the information from the anime it is absurd that shirou can suddenly do that acrobatic physical defying move. But if we take additional information that is not in anime but canon (mainly from typemoon wikia). then we can understand or at least accept how shirou can do that. First he is inside UBW, the world that he created. Quoting from Typemoon wikia "Reality Marbles allows only for the creation of a set world that defines the practitioner. They force all things to obey their rules, but it is limited only to that one pattern ". so it is a different world with its own set of rules that is different from the physical law of normal world. But it not really clear that if UBW have the same gravity, or weather Shirou have a total control of the law in UBW, but we can assume he does to a certain degree that maybe make make him capable to jump that high. Secondly UBW have the ability to perfectly copy not only the weapon ability but the user ability as well. quoting from typemoon wikia again "Their entire histories, compositions, and designs are all perfectly
    recorded, allowing for instant proficiency with the weapons by inheriting all combat skills and techniques utilized by their original
    owners. " So when Shirou use any weapon in UBW Shirou became a martial artist with the ability of that weapon former users that's why he can do that crazy combat move like a master. Yes he will not be as good as the original User that's why he said that by creating this world we will never be able to defeat the master of the original weapon that has put all his lifetime to master his weapon, but agains gilgamesh that is not a master of any weapon he totally have an overwhelming advantage.

    Interesting video. Although I would say that Grimgar does the weight aspect of its fights pretty well, I thought that they were overall hard to follow. For example, in some of the earlier goblin fights in the ruins, the camera would jump around to different people without giving the viewer to understand where they were or what was happening. Characters would sometimes just run in from a new camera angle which would make sense after a second but destroy the viewer's sense of direction during the cut. Same for some of the later fights, where it's hard to get an overall understanding of what's happening. However, I did find the moment to moment swings of the fight scenes had a nice feel to them as thy hit or missed, as well as the emotional weight you talked about.

      I'm not saying that I didn't know what was happening or who was attacking, the fights themselves were just disorienting from a flow perspective. Like, the events can be made sense of, but what directions things are happening relative to everything else as well as the way cuts between characters were done too quickly without giving the viewer a chance to understand the layout of the fights. At least that's what I though.

    • @shadow0355

      I do think that they did a poor job with the flow of the fight. Like the fight in the mansion, i knew that Haruhiro and Yume was going on the other side of the upper floor to sneak attack but it took me a few secs to notices. Maybe they should add more scene in the middle to let us know where the character are at, but it was still easy to follow for me. What they do seriously need is pan out shot in the fight...

    One point of contention, the concept that a big person or a big weapon must be slower is BS. (Though you didn't say it outright it's a common myth so I'll explain it). Firstly, asumming all people and weapons are in good shape, a big person will have more power to move the weapon. A big person can also be as fast or faster as a smaller one. While they have more mass a higher percentage of mass is muscle. Look at Usain Bolt. He's not huge, but he's not small either. He is quite fast though. Obviously there will be dimishing returns at some point, but that's more dependent on the persons frame. Secondly, the weapon. A falchion is lighter and smaller than a greatsword, but the greatsword is more nible because of its balance. The falchion is a chopping tool so it's really a one swing kind of weapon while the greatsword is really more of a spear than a sword. The giant swings we see in film would really only be done to execute a finished opponent, or if it were such an ill equiped opponent that they're screwed anyway. All that out of the way, awesome video man.

    • @theblonde8152
      @theblonde8152 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      enginesnblades while being more muscular won’t hurt your speed( if within a certain range) , being larger doesn’t mean more muscle mass. Especially in the modern world, it means fatter. It won’t effect arm swings as much, but footwork will definitely be impacted. Footwork is very important in all forms if combat. Also by having a a long sword that as you said is going to be used more spearlike, you also gain the disadvantages of spears. There is a sweat spot when the opponent is far enough, but if an opponent gets past that you are vulnerable and weak.

    I agree with everything you said. I only disagree slightly with the implication that Grimgar's fights are good overall. They do manage physical and emotional weight well as you established, but they don't fair that well in other aspects.
    For example, we don't get a good sense of the space the battle takes place in. This problems arises from the amount of cuts to different characters, who in addition often move between cuts. The first fight reviewed, the one reviewed in this video, is perhaps the one that suffers from this problems the least, but I still ask myself where characters go, or why one person is suddenly fighting the goblin by themselves, and so on.
    All in all, I would say that only the first fight is good thanks to the emotional and physical weight. The rest still retain their weight, but their other flaws are more present. I'd say they fill their role and are still better than the fights in most other anime, but I wouldn't say they are good.
    P.s. Even two-handed swords are very light. Ranta shouldn't have stuck his sword to the ground due to it being heavy and unwieldy.

      Starvation. The region they are transported in is the "frontier", the region where humans and their allied races wage war against the alliance of orcs, goblins, kobolds, gray elves, etc. And in order to exploit these otherworlders that come to grimgar since forever they set up a very shitty economy where you are only allowed to exert a profession or even buy food if you have paid a very large sum to join a guild. To japanese otherworlders with no money they offer 10 silver coins (just enough to join a combat guild but not enough to join an economy oriented guild) and the job of volunteer soldier trainees, if they refuse the job they are thrown into Alterna with no money or knowledge, their only option would be to become essentially slaves to a storeowner in exchange of a pittance of money, depending on their employer's tastes they might even be sexually exploited. They really, really have no other choice, at least they are paid fairly for raiding and killing Arabakia's enemies. It is also pretty cool how the story does not forget its setting and the characters are actually drafted into war and participate in a large scale military operation. Even if they stay volunteer soldiers and become good enough to be praised like demigods as in Soma's case they are still treated with a lot of prejudice and seen as undisciplined, convenient cannon fodder.

    came for grimgar, was pleasantly surprised by star wars... until you got to the prequels
    'but they lack the same emotional impact of the originals because they don't carry the same weight'. you couldn't have picked a worse duel to try and make that point over than anakin vs obi-wan. I really hate claiming right vs. wrong on topics like this since it always ends in arguments over subjectivity, but if you couldn't feel the emotional climax in that fight then you honest to goodness weren't watching the movie right. it's a little upsetting to see people who say they like the prequels and their fights claim that their flashiness is the appeal, and that there's no emotional weight behind them.

    • @21coute

    Except that's "pseudo" realism. Most people expect a dagger to be faster than a greatsword because it became a fantasy trope. Realistically though a greatsword would be just a fast a longsword or a shortsword, if not even faster due to being wielded two-handed. Real greatswords aren't heavy (as in actual greatswords used for combat, not parade ones).
    Which is also why nobody would realistically use daggers as main weapons. It's a trope of "rogue/assassin" characters, but there's no advantage to wielding daggers in combat compared to weapons with longer reach.
    That's personally why I couldn't get into the first episode of Grimgar. The fantasy tropes were too glaring.

    • @gdlop

    • @bloodwire7152
      @bloodwire7152 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Grimgar's world is still a "video game" world. The point of having such trope characters is because there is classes and abilities related to these classes. Haruhiro is a rogue class, so he wouldn't be able to use his abilities with heavier weapons, and that leads to him using daggers as a main weapon. In real world, wielding daggers as main weapon would be a huge disadvantage when against swords, but the existence of abilities puts them at the same level.
      oh wow, your comment was a year ago... sorry for bothering you then.

    • @theblonde8152
      @theblonde8152 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Klavikule that isn’t necessarily true. Great swords definitely weigh more. Having two hands on a blade isn’t exactly convenient either. It adds the extra power needed to swing the heavier sword, but it can actually make the sword harder to use. That being said though, reach is still important and a dagger isn’t likely to be effective in a fair fight.

    • @gabrielwright-dunn9355
      @gabrielwright-dunn9355 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought that was more of an example of using physical weight. I was referring more to emotional weight like with the /Star Wars/ example. I was wondering if there were any works which were able to convey a "palpable" (for lack of a better term) sense of emotional weight. For example, I was wondering if the incredibly over-the-top fight scenes in shows like the /Sengoku Basara/ anime and /Kill la Kill/ have emotional weight to them.

    • @drakor98
      @drakor98 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'd say they do. Undoubtedly there are people who would disagree, but that is when we begin to get into the realm of subjectivity. I think even a flashy fight can hold emotional weight, if there are well placed bits of dialogue, and evident damage to one or both parties. When fights get boring, in my opinion, is when there are explosions everywhere, and people say they're tired or exhausted, but continue on as if the battle had just begun.
      I'd love to see something with the over-the-topness of Kill la Kill, that ends up in a desperate slug fest for survival as both parties are worn down. One show I can think of that does this well is Gurren Lagan, in the final fight between Simon and the Anti-Spiral.

What I mean is being able to breathe, to inhale every small detail and make it feel like it's actually happening in our minds but also in our emotional state of mind. Thank you for posting this.
    I'm a strong believer that quantity does not necessarily mean quality and nowadays you just have a lot of people producing a lot of material. Too many movies, tv series, animes, etc are being watched by oh so many people and the quality is falling. This is good and bad, as I am sure that when a true work, a true work of art is released it will stand out. :)

    I have to protest the "realistic" part.
    Sure, you feel the weight of the weapons, but real weapons aren't of much weight to begin with...
    A Greatsword [or Zweihander if you are fancy, heaviest and (arguably) longest type of sword to exist]:
    Weight - 2-3.2 kilograms (4.4-7.1 pounds)
    Length - up to 213 centimetres (84 inches)
    And they can be swung around with ridiculous speed for its size and more than likely to break through most type of guards other smaller weapons can use.
    Great reach too.
    The fight in Fate/Zero was extremely tactical, it is also one where Lancer have better reach and not necessarily better attack speed, but yes, stabbing motions is faster than swinging motions...
    The UBW fight...You called it unrealistic...You fucking forgot that magic, lots and lots of magic was involved??? By nature, magic is already unrealistic and a game changer...just...man...It's almost as bad as how people forgot that Fate was originally an Eroge...

    I brought up this show to a friend the other day and then remembered seeing this video and sent it along as well, because (although I don't completely agree with some of the analysis points on Fate/Zero) you hit on and clearly laid out many of the things that set this show apart from its predecessors, contemporaries, and the shows that came after.
