    I like to put some cooked potatoes in the freezer for quick meals. I bake whole potatoes in the oven and let them cool and freezer them in a bag. They take about eight minutes to reheat in the microwave. You can freeze potatoes once they are roasted. And one of our favourites is to mash them and then use a large ice cream scoop to make individual servings, place on a baking paper covered tray, cover the tops and flash freeze, then bag them up. If you have something cooking in the oven for dinner, say a casserole, pull the mash from the freezer and heat them up for the last fifteen to twenty minutes of cooking time for what ever is in the oven.

    I realize I have been doing my shopping backwards. Making my meal plan before I shop. Better to shop first and get all the bargains and then come home and make your plan with what you score. I do that in the summer when I go to Farmers Market

    • @armslengthaway
      @armslengthaway 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't think you are doing it backwards. I always try to blend my weekly meal plan with what I already have, weekly sales among the different stores, and what I find reduced. I consider reduced a bonus.
      If I get something reduced I make I can freeze it if I can't eat it right away so I don't waste it.

      @@dorothyroush6273 Personally I don't care what others think of how I shop. Like you I meal plan around the markdowns. I already know what's in my Pantry, fridge & freezer. Batch cooking saves me, as sometimes I don't feel like cooking. For me, I find it bit boring knowing what menu is for the week. I like the element of surprise with the markdowns. I live alone so don't have to consider anyone else. It all works out, I eat healthy & usually on or under budget. Each to their own. Hope you score lots bargains in 2022.

    We keep "use up" basket on counters, in freezer and in frig. We don't meal plan. We keep stocked up on food we like when it is on sale or at a good price. We then use what we have to make a meal. We save more this way. We watch weekly ads at our local grocery, buy at General Dollar, and Aldis. The bulk of it comes from Aldi. This works best for us.

      It's good to know that I am not the only one who has noticed this trend. You know where I really first figured out that they were reducing package size? Frozen vegetables! Now most bags are 12 oz. instead of a full pound. Once I noticed that, I started looking at other packages and found the same thing.

      Same old grocery store trick, increase price, shrink the package.
      30 years ago a lg can of tuba was 8 ounces, last time I checked it had shrunk to 6.25, then just 6 ounces, box stsys same highth but holds less, One must wear there glasses the entire time while grocery shopping! Read the small print! I tsught all 3 of my chikdren how to comparessiin shop. Gricery store math let them practice there mathskills in a sneaky way,Doing math? nope, just trying to figure out which,can,jsr ect is the best deal.

    We are a vegan family, too, for the most part. Started with me because I had IBS. I researched and tried veganism. My ibs symptoms disappeared and so did my back pain, arthritis, and acne! I lost child support when my youngest turned 18 and graduated. However, I still support 3/4 of my kids at home. The oldest has a serious chronic illness, but no disability. So I need to do what you are doing Faith! We will only make about 32k per year on my salary. After getting trained in my new job, I'll look for a second part-time job on Sundays. Thanks Faith!

    I am blessed to have 6 Kroger stores near me, so I have been bargain shopping them for years. I usually shop at all of them on Tuesday mornings, the day before the Wednesday ads are issued. I can usually find wonderful specials on meat, as well as other items that may be on my list. As an example, if the 80/20 hamburger is on sale, then the 90/10 usually doesn't sell as well during that ad cycle, so it is marked down. I also go to multiple stores as there may be manager's specials that are only available at a particular store. Once, there was a 25 cent per loaf special on a certain bread, and I asked the employee why that was. They said that they didn't normally carry that bread, and they just wanted to move it quickly. I bought 4 loaves and froze them; they were delicious! Once they sold 10 pound bags of potatoes for 99 cents! These deals weren't advertised - you just had to be there to see them. I always go to the Kroger stores first to shop the specials, THEN I go to Aldi to round out anything I couldn't find a deal on at Kroger. And don't overlook Aldi for markdowns, either. It is not uncommon to have packages of meat or produce marked down by 50%.

    • @UndertheMedian
      @UndertheMedian  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have a great system! We have found that one Kroger in town tends to mark items down more aggressively. So, we go there first. Then, we hit up the other two locations if we didn't find enough at the "cheap" Kroger. One of the other locations tends to put bread on markdown for cheaper prices than the others, too. You are right about Aldi. Some people don't realize that Aldi does discount items. If you hit at the right time, they discount bread that is within 48 hours of the sell-by date.

    For the potatoes- I love sautéed sliced onions & sliced potatoes together in a large pan on the stove with a little olive oil. Just turn onions/potatoes regularly....You let the potatoes brown and the onions caramelize.....ohhhh it's so delicious. My mom cooked this for me & I've been cooking this dish for over 35 yrs. In fact I'm making it tomorrow 😊 Ohhhhh and add salt &pepper.

    A good use for your frozen cubes of orange juice, (or for fresh orange juice, of course) is use it as part of your liquid mixing a whole wheat bread dough.
    Sometimes as whole wheat flour ages, in the canister or bag, it takes on a bitter taste. Sometimes even when it's got a sell-by date that's far off and comes fresh from the store, you can get that bitter-tasting bag of whole wheat flour. I frequently use a couple tablespoons of sugar added to the dough, but several recipes I have seen mentioned using orange juice to fight any possible bitterness in the whole wheat bread. I've never tried it because I've never had any orange juice around when I was making whole wheat bread with bitter flour.
    I hope this helps somebody (like me) who doesn't mill their own whole wheat flour.

    • @UndertheMedian
      @UndertheMedian  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great tip! In the winter, I sometimes put them in a box in the basement. My pantry is near an outside wall and stays at about 50 degrees. If I wrap the potatoes in newspaper, that helps, too with longevity. I use this method when I buy a huge box or two of potatoes from a local farmer at the very end of the growing season, right before cold weather hits.

    Carrot salad- 1 lb cooked sliced carrots, rounds, drained, leave in a bowl to chill. Into a blender, 1 can of tomato soup, 1 small onion,1 green or red pepper, 1/2 cup sugar, 1 tsp salt, 1 cup oil, pepper, 2/3 cup vinegar, 1 tsp dry mustard powder .We double this and sometimes only make the dressing for salad. Adust the vinegar and sugar to taste.before you pour it on the carrots. I take this for lunch by itself or chop some lettuce/ spinach/kale in the bottom and top with the carrots salad. Sometimes a hard boiled egg sliced on top.

    I say the same thing about the baked goods. If I can find it for $.50 or less, especially if it's like a whole loaf of bread or package of bagels or package of English muffins. My store does occasionally mark down little donuts/donut holes. When they get to $.25 I will buy several and this bag them up at home (4-6 mini donuts per bag. The kids are allowed 1 bag for breakfast, rather than let them have the whole box. We buy a lot of single yogurts because it's easier to open one of those for each of my kids (who are 3 & 4). It's less mess when they can eat from their own container. IDK why, but this past week I overbought Kale. I found it on sale at one store ($.89 for a really large bag, bought 2) but I had already made my WM pick up order, so I got 2 frozen bags of kale. AND I still had a bag of kale in the freezer. So we're trying to use up a lot of kale as we can (the week before I found kale salad kits for $.38 each, so of course I bought 6.

    I usually buy larger packages as they tend to work out cheaper. Here in Portugal shopping at open air markets is cheaper than the grocery stores for produce. I have yet to check out the prices of the produce truck as I always seem to be midway through renovations when I hear the truck beeping. I am sure it is cheaper than the stores though. One day I will find out!!! 🙂
