Thanks so much for the review!
You're welcome. I adore Maze Rats and Knave 1e. I honestly didn't think they could be improved on, but it feels like you've taken the best of both and then made it better. It was one of the easiest reviews I've done so far.
Knave 2 is almost a mini-thesis about OSR, a sort of recapitulation of the state of the OSR (at least in his B/X, traditional, variation). A great book, game and work.
100% I knew I would like it I didn't realise how much
UK has the book, most of Europe has the book, the book has been to two cons,... I live less than 45 minutes from Ben and here I sit waiting on My Book
South Carolinian here to second your frustration lol
Got mine in KY yesterday, so it should be soon!
Also SC - let’s do an online game set in post-reset America (based on the tartarian reset mythology)
Comparison is the thief of joy. The book will come 😊
This is why I love Kevin Crawford's Stars and Worlds Without Number. Kevin's games have a very good system but the toolkit is what shines. I prefer it to KNAVE, but did buy into the Knave 2 kickstarter. Hopefully the book shows up before my funeral.
I think Kevin stuff is awesome. I have red tide and an echo resounding on my shelves and I really want to cover them at some point.
@fumbletable If you do decide to review Red Tide, you should consider also reviewing Scarlet Heroes (which is a sort of spin off of Red Tide, also written by Crawford and based in the same world as Red Tide [and it reuses some of Red Tide's text], *but* focused on solo play or 1 GM and 1-2 players).
Hi @Shamustodd1 ! Can you briefly explain what it is you prefer about Kevin Crawford's work? This would help me immensely as I'm trying to get an overview of all the different systems out there! Thanks!
@@vladt7150 I've had a quick look at scarlet heroes. I'm going to order a print copy and maybe do a series on the three of them, as there seems to be a hell of a lot to cover between them.
@@Alex-ue3yx The without number series is a monstrous set of DM tool kit tomes. Kevin keeps it clear, concise, and well formatted (No High Gygaxian here.) One of my favorite versions of D&D is WhiteBox fmag and Kevin's System kinda like playing "Advanced Whitebox" The books are good for any system but the "House" system is very good and without any flotsam to get in the way. All of that put into top quality bindings that will last a lifetime of use.
For torches, we always maxed out on carry them into a dungeon and as we found loot we dropped torches to be picked and used on the way out.
The more I think about it, the more I like this rule. It makes sense, a torch is not small. You also create space the further you go into the dungeon. And with a bunch of bad rolls it could lead to calamity.
My copy arrived, Down Under, a couple of weeks ago. I'm coming towards the end of the AD&D Fighter Challenge module and can't wait to design my next game using Knave 2e.
Long review but so so well deserved ! I love Knave and its spirit so much, glad you took time to explore and praise it. Keep up your great work !
Thank you. It was a really easy review to do, as there's just so much in it.
Everyone has those days where we are struck with madness and hallucinate that we have Hummingbird wings, or is it just my characters?
I love this deep dive review. Thanks for being so thorough. Really helped me make the decision to purchase this.
I'm glad it was helpful, I'll be honest I could have gone on for another half an hour I had to reign myself in.
I was kinda fated to love Knave 2e, because I came up with most of it's dungeon procedure rules independently. Particularly the idea that PCs automatically notice stuff at a normal pace-- this can help massively in RPGs with a "perception" stat, because someone cranking it up becomes a choice rather than an obligation. Want to sprint through dungeons and save yourself from running directly into a pit? High perception is good. Otherwise you don't need it. (And of course, for that to work, you really need to have some kind of dungeon turn that makes "speeding up" a meaningful decision.)
Great review! It's cool to see what you like about the new rulebook. Helps me pick up insights I might have missed and rules I might not have noticed. Ben Milton is a master of simple, elegant game design and of giving really useful random tables in minimal space.
Thank you, I have a feeling that playing it will help uncover a lot more. I'm still discovering new ways to use the maze rats tables after years of playing with them.
@@fumbletable Those Maze Rats tables rock! When you first see them you might not realize how great they really are, but after finding ways to use them they're kind of mind blowing. Have you seen this?

This has become my go-to system! Love it! ❤
The quality of Knave reminds me of another winning OSR - adjacent game that requires no module and can be run from the random tables in the book. Why are these game books not sold in shops? Great overview of an outstanding product.
Cheers!
Thank you. The hope is one day things like this will be picked up by mainstream stores. I think when somebody produces something with love and care you can see it.
Which game does it remind you of?
Got my book yesterday in Canada! So happy with it and can’t wait to use it for some solo gaming! :)
I think it will rock for solo games.
"Certain coaster dwelling magic users" is such a good line haha
Love Knave 2. The value is unreal.
I've been using it to world build with my daughter. What we're coming up with is absolutely fantastic.
After watching this video I am sold!! This RPG system is incredible!
I've just started a game with my daughter. We had a blank 8 by 10 hex map. She rolled a character and that was the start of the world building. It's been an absolute ball so far, and we haven't started "playing" yet.
@@fumbletable That's awesome! Have fun storming the castle!! 😄
Spores, molds, gelatinous cubes, and rust monsters must come back. More diseases too.
Honestly .. where is my book
@QuestingBeast - @fumbletable gives a GREAT in-depth review of your game and he is right! KNAVE is fantastic for DMs and Players alike!
Being in the US sucks for this one. I missed the kickstarter and cannot find a place from which to buy the book. I'm sure it's great but really bummed at not being able to get it.😕
Go to Ben's site the links in the description, sign up for the newsletter and as soon as it's on drive-thru I imagine it will be in there.
@@fumbletable Good idea! Will do!
On lot of folks on reddit seem to have issues with the hazard die. Do you use it as is? Have you house ruled anything regarding the hazard die?
I haven't run 2e yet but i have used hazard dice before and I really like them. I love the unpredictability and not tracking but still making inventory matter. Letting your players know exactly how they work before you use them is key. But i would also push people towards the line in the book
"Edit the rules. The rules are your servant, not your master. If a rule isn’t working the way your group likes, talk to them about it and tailor things to fit."
Hazard dice are super easy to hack to suite your table. If you don't like rest turns just leave that blank. If you don't like torches burning out on the 1st turn after lighting them then rule that they burn for at least 1 turn.
I’m looking to hear your take on Knave 2nd Edition. I went all in on the Kickstarter and I am waiting for it to show up here soon. 😊
@agilemonk6305 I'm slightly confused, this was my take on knave 2e
@@fumbletable I meant that is why I was watching your video as I wanted your take on Knave 2e. Apologies for the confusion. 😊
@@agilemonk6305 no worries that makes a lot more sense.
Where the hell is the PDF of this? The books are out as far as I know, but you can't buy this anywhere...
The Kickstarter is still being fulfilled. As soon as the Kickstarter is fulfilled I'm sure the PDF will be on drive-thru.
@@fumbletable Why on Earth is the PDF not being delivered/uploaded AS the physical books are supposedly shipping out? It makes little sense as to why this entire kickstarter was such a monumental cluster f@ck. I am sure there are plenty of people that have had issues with various kickstarter projects in the past, but this one especially with how the person in charge of responding to the kickstarter questions, has been nothing but a disappointment.
Just learned that the PDF is actually available for download on Backerkit if you backed the Kickstarter. I had to get someone in the Kickstarter comment section to give me the info because I was unable to find it listed on the Kickstarter page anywhere. I will stand behind my original concern/complaint... this has been one of the most screwed up Kickstarter projects that I have put money on. It doesn't look to be any one person's fault, but more of a series of people that are not doing what they should be doing, and others that have an abundance of "that's your problem, not mine" kind of attitude.
Wisdom has always been extreamly usefull as a stat. Too usefull as it utilises perception.
Have they added any offensive spells? Last I checked, Knave did not have any offensive spells to them. Where can I get it? When can I get it?
The hundred spells in the book are still mainly utility. "Hatred" could be used as an offensive spell. But the way the spells are set up and with those tables it would be really easy to make them. Using your INT to modify them.
Sounds like a must read
It absolutely is.
@fumbletable - I would love to hear your review of Deathbringer by @DungeonCraft1
I'll add it to the list. I'm a big fan of PDM. The caves of carnage were a game changer for me.
Shame on you for supporting Ben Milton and Knave 2e. Ben lied to us Kickstarter backers and sold advanced copies of what was supposed to be a Kickstarter exclusive cover at a convention before ANY of the backers got their books. I still don't have mine as of this post. Then he treated us like we were the bad guys for complaining when the exclusive cover was renamed "premium edition." Don't support ANY content creator that lies and then disrespects their backers. Shame on you both!
Get over yourself, mate
#everybodyiscancelled
If that’s true (I haven’t followed) that’s a low move. But you’re calling it out as if everybody has transgressed holy lines and you’re exclaiming a fatwa! Try to get out a bit more.
My Knave and Maze Rats arrived yesterday. Nice to have the official print versions. I’ve been a fan of both games for years.
