anyone that can avoid a high note at the last second in order to preserve their voice from vocal damage and STILL make it sound like it's part of the score is a true master of their craft.
Her sick is still better than what most of us can pull off on a good day. It’s awful that the culture around Broadway/touring companies and lack of sick pay has performers feeling like they have to power through and potentially mess up their voice (which we have seen with several actresses in this role).
She is such a powerhouse! Being able to pull off those notes at the end and still acting the hell out of the song? I can’t even imagine what she was feeling in the moment, but the “Oh MY GOD” I blurted out with that first bring me down?? She’s insane!! BRING HER BACK!! ❤
Julia Murney used to sing a low note on the second BMD (bring me do-own), but I don't know if any Elphabas who deliberately sang low all the time like this. Only this and that one Idina performance where she took it down to a G#4 for the final battle cry because she was too sick to belt higher.
@@AlwaysKeepingCool2 how pompous of you to label my opinion incorrect. It isnt incorrect nor correct, its my opinion and the opinion of every family member I went with to see Wicked who literally could not believe she got the role because of how bad her singing was for someone on broadway. Watching Julia Murney was like seeing a no-fly show, HORRIFYING AND HEARTBREAKING.
Right? I thought she was going to stick to the lower key like that one audio of Idina when she almost blew out her voice. I can’t believe she even pulled out the final note with how sick she was - what a beast!
One thing I noticed with Emma (not in this specific performance) is that sometimes her hand movements are very unnatural, which makes me wonder... Is she mentally placing the notes with her hands? Like, when a singer is learning, they'll use specific hand movements to place some notes because psychology. I mean, I'm not saying this is necessarily bad, just an observation
I find it interesting that we don’t keep these recordings under raps. Like it just feels like common respect to keep this one in the vaults and not show a performance where she is clearly struggling. Just because the recording exists doesn’t mean we have to broadcast it.
i respect your opinion, personally i think that this recording is a testament to her strength as a vocalist, that despite being sick she still can put on a good performance, and most people in the comments have been praising her for this. i also really like the alternative note changes she did. there's also only two other recordings of emma, & i think it's cool to see another video of her elphie, even when sick! of course, if emma ever says she wants me to take it down i will, but i think she does great job still!
I feel like it's important to show the reality of life as a performer. We all know what an exceptional vocalist Emma is, so showing an off-performance like this speaks to just how sick she must have been. How hard she must have been working to push through. I don't think it is anything to be ashamed of. I think people admire her perseverance.
Genuinely question. Why post videos like this? Like if I was a performer I’d be so embarrassed to know someone recorded this and thought let’s show everyone!!
@@calebcurtis2005 if emma has an issue with this being up, i will absolutely take it down, but i think it's still a strong performance, especially during the ground portion, & as you can see everyone in these comments is praising her so i don't think she'd need to be embarrassed!
@Broadwayriah and Gustavo, and now me. Also OP's offer to take it down is disingenuous. Y'all know full well Emma isn't hunting down videos and proving her identity to random TH-camrs, and the creators of the show already told you not to post this but here we are
@ she’s talked about it a little bit, but it seems like the story is the touring manager didn’t like her because they felt she was too big and they didn’t like how she looked and they felt for a leading lady. She need to lose weight so they would try to stop her from eatingand almost as a way to deter her. They were adding shows hoping to get her to quit for being too tired and even made her perform with pneumonia.

That first “bring me down” was astonishing. I kinda want to hear more of that.
Sameeeeee!

i totally agree! i honestly think they should introduce having two lead elphabas that alternate because the demands of the show are ridiculous,
I love that idea, there should definitely be an alternating cast especially for the top roles that demand most, especially for high demand shows
Did she finish the show?
@@spintaneousrazzle suprisingly, she did!

I’ve been wanting a video for so long. This is like Christmas Day
Whoa that first bring me down was beautiful and cool….hmmmm there may be something to the lower octave in this song 🖤🖤🖤
Ok….but why is 8:13 JUST SO GOOD?!?!!!! I need a whole version sung at a low but beautiful octave asap, anyone know other elphaba’s that sang low?

Pre-flight is so damn stunning as always with Emma. I’ll never get over it.
Up until flight I never would have guessed she was sick.
This 'me down' sounds so much better than the original wow.
I love Emma Hunton's Elphaba
Thats a hell of "me down" where she starts lower and rises up to the correct key.

Even though she still gives great performance, I found this an uncomfortable watch. Imagine your sick days at work being broadcasted in this way. 😬
I remember a very similar video with very different audio being posted years ago -- Or was it a different video?
This is a new release, this guy filmed at least two other vids exactly like this.
I wish there was one of Emmy from the LA run!
At this performance the role of Madame Morrible will be played by Baby Jane Hudson
