Movie Trivia: In the film, they call Porco's plane a Savoia S.21 but the S.21 is a bi-plane. Some sources say Miyazaki modeled Porco's plane after the Macchi M33 which is the closest real-world airplane in design. Others say Miyazaki drew Porco's plane from his imagination using his memory of French racing planes for inspiration. Miyazaki's father was an aeronautical engineer and director of Miyazaki Airplane which made airplane parts.

      Explains, "The Wind Rises".

"The wind rises" is the story of the engineer who built the Zero. Is a very beautiful Anime and i.m.h.o. has absolutely no intention of exalting Japanese imperialism.
if you can see the film you will realize that the whole story is centered on the life of the designer and the technique of building that plane.
B.T.W. if I remember correctly the era in which the Zeke was drawn, it precedes the tragedy of Pearl Harbor.
Take this movie like one other documentary on third reich and nazifascism: horrible but historical.
Miyazaki has always been a pacifist, aviation enthusiast and I think he wanted to pay tribute to a great mind of that time, even if unfortunately from the wrong side.
If I were the American Miyazaki, with the same logic of thought I could make a film about the designer of P51 or P38, or B29 without talking about war if not in the background, equally on the SM79 if I were Italian Miyazaki, or on the ME109 if I was the German Miyazaki just to give some examples
I understand that for the American people betrayed by Pearl Harbor it is difficult to face this film lightly but I'm sure that once you've seen with the right frame of mind you can understand the true intentions of the Japanese director.
P.S. I'm Italian and I've had too a few moments of doubt, but after I've seen the film I can say it's very balanced.
      Hi

Absolutely love it! You can reduce the nose down tendency by adding a few degrees of up thrust at the firewall. A lot of the old seaplanes had setups like this, so it won't look terribly odd. :)

I have been praying for this aeroplane to come out for a long, long time - I fell in love with Porco Rosso the instant and I saw it, and it is at the same level at The Wind Rises. It presses all the right buttons - A seaplane,a fighter, Italian inter-war, Japanese Anime = pure heaven. I await the plans with baited breath !

Josh Bixler i want you to make a plane that can move backward without turning the wing

    • @modelnutty6503
      @modelnutty6503 6 ปีที่แล้ว

+Josh Bixler absolutely agree, and it does need the tweaks to look closer to the Anime plane, which isn't going to be fun to work out into being a simple build. top front of fuselage rounding down, rolling the foam first, two V notches, then forcing it together, top front of fuselage being half hexagon shape (close enough!). the bottom shallow V pontoon shape is the simpler part. the engine pod really almost begs cutting a toilet paper tube in half, to bridge them with 1" or 1-1/4" flat sides... or 1-1/8" in front and 7/8" at rear for some side profile taper (oh hey). definitely wing higher and shorter engine pod masts but daaangg that rough prototype flew really well!! can't wait to see the final version closer resembling the movie plane.... eww gross? some small paper tampon tubes and small drinking straws (or coffee stir sticks) to mock up the machine guns, after paint who's going to know or care? a prop cone, easy available.
know it seems a little weird that I'd see "parts" from junk out of the bathroom, but they're easy available! a paper towel tube could be sliced in half for a round top of a fuselage, just leave enough paper from the foam board to wrap up over it. cut one into quarters and bridge top with a long trapezoid \ / for a round front and a widening top/flat (like from 0 to 1/2" wide and 6-8" length). more strength and not much more weight than poster board could be very handy for the front section of a fuselage to be easy+light+strong. if applied to this plane, leaves just the very tip needing to be a bit of blue foam cut+sanded to shape, or could that be done sawing on a ping-pong ball? 1/4 of a craft store foam ball?
I hope this helps open minds to getting more creative, for even better looking designs, that still remain reasonably simple to just do!
also hope ya read it all... dang I get long winded, lmao!

I’d love to see some of the process of evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of the design. I would guess it’s mostly a conversation but to see the process of balancing tweaks to flight characteristics and performance vs build experience would be cool if possible. All that stuff that ends up being the magic of a FT design is really fascinating. Oh and an update oh FTland !
