- 2011 Mazda 2 - Long Term Owner's Review
In this Episode of Curb Check we celebrate and review a 200,000 mile 2011 Mazda 2 affectionately known as Gary. While he is no show car, he makes up for that in driving charm. Fitting the definition of cheap and cheerful, and proving that you do not need 300hp to have fun. This is Brake Check, the TH-cam show where we rate vehicles on our Hipster Scale and give insight on "Who is this car for?" As well as give our thoughts on Interior, Exterior, Powertrain and Dynamics.

Mazda has a knack for building vehicles that are fun to drive. Enjoy Gary for as long as you can. I'm hunting for a 2 myself.
Bought a 2011 Touring with 100k miles on it for $3500. Could use some suspension work, but drives relatively well. Just took it all the way up to Austin, and I can't wait to drive it all around Texas!
2011 Mazda 2 cars are sold between 13800 USD and 18600 USD in Turkey.
Thank you Toyo Kogyo. They build the best cars money can buy, and have since the 60's IMO.
i think i'll be getting a mazda, possibly a mazda 2 like gary. glad to see he made it to 200k, I hear they are reliable. and fun!
VERY reliable and welcome to the club!
I have a 2011 mazda 2 touring in Green :) I got it in 2017 it had around 50,000 miles on it , now it has 168,200 and still super reliable, it's super fun to drive for sure! I just had the inner tie rods and ball joints replaced but that's all I've had to have done , the dealership put a Kenwood radio in it though as the original was killing the battery :( but I want to get a OEM radio soon to replace it , they called it the green machine but I haven't really named her yet, thinking Jellybean.
Moving to Texas and in the process of getting a used 2012 with 72k miles on it. Looks like a solid used car that will drive from point A to point B
Thank god for not complaining about the car.Like a few other vidoes i have seen on you tube. People complaining about such trivial things on their mazda 2. Good for you.Hope Gary keeps going for another 100,000 miles and keeps you happy! I think i will get me one!
You're not nuts! There's more of us like you out there!!
I am buying Gary's brother tomorrow. same color but 1 year older. 2012 Gary 2 GX. it has only 64k mileage!! yeah!
I'm saving up for my first car and I think you've convinced me. Such a lovely, wholesome review. Thanks
Bro same I found a Mazda 2 Sport nearby and I might test drive it soon
Lol I saw a nice one too. I hope I can grab it before anyone 😁
Did u buy it
Such a fantastic, solid, and reliable ride. Not buying another car for a looooong time
The Mazda2 is a great little car, especially with the manual gearbox.
The engine sounds like a sewing machine - in a good way.
The Mazda2 is incredibly easy to maintain too!
Awe you make me love mine that much more. I still miss my Yaris, but the Mazda 2 is also pretty great.
Love it. Exactly how I feel about mine.
Us too!
I agree with everything you said. I bought my little egg “Eggy “. in 2015 salvage. 2011 5 speed with 34k miles. I just did some major job with the steering rack and other parts. And I just got a check engine sensor. I love my Huevito. I do confessed that I abused my car. But because is so fun to drive. Great video. Congrats! On you 200K.
Thank you for reminding me to give thanks to my car... Gary rocks!!!
1) We love you, Gary!!
2) Would you please clip in those damn visors!
Gary loves you. Can't, they make too much noise when clipped in. 😁
i Have a 2011 Mazda 2 just had it given to me purchase new in 2011 has done 375 000 lms quite amazing does not use any oil great condition
That is great to hear. Our little 2 is still going very strong and has 270,000 miles now.
I have a Hyundai ix35 (Tucson) 185 hp, known as a Kim. I agree with you 100%.
Thanks for watching and love the name. Sounds like a special car.
Love it, man. A really great video.
Yo, I bought mine in 2011 brand new. I now have over 200,000 miles on it. The radio glitched out, I used to smack it to get working, but sadly that trick doesn't work anymore. I've had very few repairs, back around 30,000 miles I had a clunk in the steering, but the dealer fixed. I've replaced the back shocks, and basic stuff like brakes, rotors etc. I run synthetic oil change it regularly, I think I changed the tranny fluid once. Mine's automatic and honestly is a hoot to drive, corners and hugs the road. It was my daily commuter up until I started working from home. Even with all the miles, I think I probably could sell it for $3000 ?? But why would I sell it... ? My headlight lenses are fogged up and I've cleaned them a few times, at this point I should order some new one's. Gary is a cool name, and so was your video! Thanks for sharing!
We have 2012 same car, same color and we love it
2011 Mazda 2 cars are sold between 13800 USD and 18600 USD in Turkey. The minimum wage is 2.6 USD per hour net.
awww this was bittersweet, i just passed my test like 5motnhs ago and i went with a 1.4?? 1.35 2011 tamura with 138k on it, the only thing i think is a little dodgy is when i full lock, it tends to creek
😮🎉 you are great, thank you for this review. It's unique, I feel this car is right for me.
You're welcome, thanks for watching and keep us posted on your car.
Mines name is Betty and she’s my favorite car I’ve had. Best commuter car ever.
Hi from Glen Rose, just down the road from ya!
Howdy neighbor! Thanks for watching.
Thank you, Gary! ❤
Hey man! I’m still rolling in my 2011 Mazda 2 from 0 miles myself! I’ve managed to keep it at 95K miles by always living close to work. What kind of maintenance would you suggest on it to keep it going? I’ve just been doing my oil changes at 5k miles. I think all I’ve ever replaced was a water pump once.
Keep up with the transmission. Check your belts.
Other than routine maintenance your car should last you forever.
@@fearofchicke what do I do with the transmission and when?
@@justindfw are you driving a manual or an automatic?
@@fearofchicke automatic
@@justindfw change the ATF and the filter; probably every 60k miles.
Wow, you've done over 300,000km without any issues? Do you drive it on rough terrain aswel?
Well done Gary!
I have 2008 F150 4x4 that I named Snowball....😅
Thinking about getting one of these cute little scooters as second 'fuel saving' vehicle 🤗 and I miss having a stick shift
Brake shoes will outlast brake pads for a long time and brake drums have a higher initial clamping force than brake rotors.
I rather have pads, much easier to replace.
I'm in the UK and I've just picked aup a mazda2 sport. So far so good 👍
I'm from UK too! Which year is your Mazda2? I'm looking into buying that as first car. I'm over 30. Do you tell me how you're finding yours?
@@EmMa-ck5wq it's doing well. Good to drive. The one thing I would say is the suspension is too hard. If you can find the mazda2 sport venture at a reasonable price it might be worth going for that one as they improved the suspension. Otherwise the AC works, the cruise control works and it's good to drive 👌👍.
@@eclecticcollected8570 that's good to hear. Do you have any rust issues I've read about that online
& How's it like with fuel
@@EmMa-ck5wq my commute is in heavy traffic and I was getting 36 +mpg. So that's not bad. If you have less traffic than me it should be pretty good on fuel.
The one I have has been treated with under seal at some point in it's history. This means there is no rust emerging yet on mine.
The front brake lines were an advisory for corrosion on the MOT. There is about an inch or two that is not covered and so I have sanded it back and treated that with waxoyl myself to prevent any further corrosion. 👍
I'm thinking of buying a 2011, it has 193,000 miles on it. Would $3500 be a good price? can I expect it to be reliable well over 200k ?
Awesome, the answer all comes down to how the previous owner took care of it. Ours has been maintained, but it has been exposed to the elements, and dusty climates. It is a fair bit past 200k, and still on the original clutch. And has not let us down yet. $3500 in our market seems pretty reasonable. Thanks for watching!
I am getting the same offer for mazda 2 2011 for 3500$ CAD for 194k miles on it! It looks clean but should i buy it as my first car?
2011 Mazda 2 cars are sold between 13800 USD and 18600 USD in Turkey. The minimum wage is 2.6 USD per hour net.
Your car is fine because it’s not automatic, I just bought one today because my wife’s car got stolen. We had a grab something fast $7500 completely garage kept not even surface rust on the engine tranny even the shocks nothing. 54,000 miles on it so I’m glad to hear you got 200,000 at least I know I’ll be OK for a few years I just wish you was standard . But whatever it’s not even mine it’s my wife. She’s such a simple girl. I love her.
Hey we have 266k on it now. They just last!
I like to name my motorcycles but naming a car feels weird to me 😅
Awesome video. awesome car. I am thinking of getting one. Black color
Thanks! It's an underrated car for sure. Love the choice for black. We also love the Green!!!
Thank you Gary
Hey Buddy. thanks for the vid. Just bought one for the wife who loves it and has take your advice by naming it "Marilyn". It has 105,000 miles and is in very good condition. Can I ask if you have changed the timing chain on Gary or I you running the original? Thanks again!
thank you Gary!!!
I agree with naming the car, but Gary? Nah. I'd call mine Emily. "Right, I'm just gonna have a quick go in Emily" Great to hear it's ran for 200k though, great stuff.
A very British sounding comment haha
How tall are you? Would this car be good for a 6 foot tall person? Or would your head be touching the roof?
I drive a 2012 madza 2, its red. Called the red headed step child😆😆
YES!
awesome
i run a mazda 3 2008 but full of rust and think about mazda 2 for the price in canada price car are insane high
Brilliant!
Thanks! Sure love this little car. Looks like you enjoy yours as well. Looking forward to checking some of your videos out.
I love my 2011 mazda2. Not a lot of horsepower but it’s zippy.
Have you had to replace the timing chain in it?
Not yet, and it is showing no signs of being tired. Same goes for the clutch.
@@TexasTruckChannel That's strange because most have to be replaced between 80,000 to 140,000 miles...depending on how it's driven
On these cars the timing chain will last the life of the engine just make sure to keep your oil clean and changed when it needs it.
@@tonypacheco469 Actually no, that's why I posted what I did. Those little bicycle chains do not hold up.. Watch this: th-cam.com/video/sJnpPrfGPRs/w-d-xo.html
Love you Gary
My Mazda 2 has beeen squealing after 4000 rpms it will do it twice and if you keep accelerating it makes a consistent noise
Did you ever have to replace your engine mounts.
Not yet! But we did just replace the spark plugs for the first time... at 214K miles.
Haha i had to replace my radio at 220000 miles
Is Gary still alive in 2024?
Absolutely! 266k miles.
Gary's a girl's name now ? I name my bicycles after ex-girlfriends. 😂
Is Gary still alive?
I named mine shkirtt
I think it’s a Toyota Yaris
Naming your car? Uhh.. I've never named any of my cars, or had any desire to. Nor have I ever known anyone who has named their car, out of all my family & friends over the last 30 years. Well that I know of. Maybe its an American thing?
Isn’t an Americans thing it is a REAL mens thing
Suelta la mano de la palanca de cambios!!! 😡😡😡🙄🙄🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻 Aweonao!!! 😡🙄🤦🏻🤦🏻
Gary is a strange name for a girl… and all cars are girls. All of them.
Yeah, admittedly it is. But alas that's his name. Don't know what else to say.
Wrong wheel drive. lol
Mazda 2 racing is a thing.... Got a short shifter and a Whiteline anti roll bar. Get down and dirty and rustproof the under ass. (not so much in your climate I guess)
Este hombre NO SABE conducir un vehículo de transmisión manual 🙄🤦🏻😡
