As someone with an audio processing disorder who requires subtitles to watch a lot of shows, I struggled a lot with the first episode of squid game because the audio and the subtitles don’t match, forcing me to pause often to process what is going on. I decided that I simply couldn’t keep watching the show like this because it was frustrating and tiring, but I also wanted to because the show seemed so cool! So thank you so much for this recap, it allows me to participate in the hype and enjoyment along with others.

I once called an ambulance in the middle of the night just because I was feeling a little dizzy and wanted to have that checked immediately. I was also in the hospital for three weeks this summer because of a food poisoning germ. All of those things are covered by basic insurance here you automatically have when you have any kind of job. And even the unemployed have that if they're registered in the state's unemployment system. I really hope you can perhaps move somewhere where you have all that too.

This was a fantastic show and am glad that once a decade Americans can watch stuff with subtitles. I also liked there was a throwaway xmen joke and the front man was in an xmen movie and the actor wasn't revealed yet, so of course he was the front man, which is a pretty genius inside joke.
Edit: No idea what the OP is referring to - neither the X-Men reference or how the actor Lee Byung-Hun was in the franchise somewhere. Did you get mixed up with GI:Joe? Cause he did play Storm Shadow in the late 2000s reboot

So glad I watched this review when needing a recap before season 2. I am DTFL so much I can’t 😂 people are getting wiped out and I’m crying laughing and it was a good recap very detailed.
Personally, i think this show was seriously like a 9/10 until the final episode. I feel like the reveal with the old man completely ruins the connection he had with him (and for honestly no reason either bc the reveal seriously doesnt add anything to the story at all), and after that he decides to, instead of being a good person and living out his life with his daughter... go on some crazy James Bond mission to take down the richest group of people on the planet or something?? Seriously disappointing but hey I cant deny that other than that the show was incredibly and episode 6 was heartbreaking all the same

personally i don't think you watched the show fully, because it makes perfect sense. he has survivor's guilt, especially because he essentially was the reason sae-byeok got killed. the entire time he got out, he was depressed over it. the old man twist? nobody saw it coming despite the fact that they had actually hinted at it for so long, even from episode one. you're meant to feel betrayed... many people shed tears over his "death" in the marble game, so it came at a huge shock. his daughter is safe in america... she's with her family (who's wealthy as it is) and is living a normal life. he sees that some guy down on his luck is being recruited to play the squid game, and all of the sudden his survivor's guilt kicks in again. if he just left then and there, he would've been ignoring what sae-byeok said when she stated he was "better than that" when he tried to kill sang-woo and that "that isn't him." if he left, he would've essentially been killing that man, and that's just something he couldn't live with... the whole idea of these games taking place to begin with, he can't live with. he has the money to stop them, so that's what he's going to try to do. idk why that's so disappointing to you lmao
It’s an allegory to how these people connect with the poor and the main character’s quest will likely have multiple people coming together, the same as in socialism to take down the elites. There’s no way he will do it by himself.

Just finished the 1st season and came here to just get a summary to make sure i didn’t miss anything. When you find out the old guy was in on it, you realize all the little clues and foreshadowing they had throughout all the episodes of him being in on it.
I feel like there's somewhat a good end to ali since the money he stole (10 thousand dollars) from his boss was probably enough for his wife and kid to live a bit normal in their home country.
