i was at the Merchant Navy training school in 1965 it closed in 1967 and went back to Gravesend . The training ship the Vindicatrix was on the canal at Sharpness and the camp nearby you could see the bridge with the spans missing just up the river.
Crossing The Wash was very exciting and brilliant fun wasn't it, but very different from the voyage from Sharpness to Bristol on the tidal river Severn. The Severn rises and falls by up to 45 feet at Portishead and the speed of the current under the Severn bridge can reach 9mph, plus, there are many cross currents and whirlpools that grab the boat and spin it sideways. The fast flows can also produce large, steep waves, particularly if there is any wind. To add to that the route is complicated, with the deep water channel zig zagging across the river, and there are dangerous shifting mud banks and semi-submerged rocks to avoid. You also have to get the timing right, because if you arrive too late at Portishead lock, they won't let you into their marina, and you find yourself stranded on the angry river over night. Jackie and I are definitely up for it if you are, it'll be fun! Best wishes Jeff
Surely if you didn’t film every cruise you would be able to keep up to date with your editing. It seems odd we’re in cold December weather and your in t shirts.
