    I purchased the EM-10 mk2 just too see if what I had read about the Olympus was everything that was said about it. After just one day using the Olympus I decided to sell my Canon system and go all out for M4/3. The problem I had with my Canon system was the weight, as an old fart now I simply couldn't carry it easily. Now I have a much lighter system and I am now very happy plus my l can now get out more often and I'm enjoying my hobby. I agree with everything you said in your video and I enjoyed it immensely. Thank you for sharing.

    I have a OMD1 mkii and it is a bliss to use. So light, so relevant in all conditions... and the sensor stabilisation is outstanding. This system needs more advertising!

    On the feature subject on Olympus I use the scene mode for hand held starlight for shooting some editorial stuff on a structure fire the other night. It's a pretty good image have to take into Lightroom and kill a little off the noise and dehaze. But make shooting in the dark easy!

    I have bought E-M1 II. Another big plus for me is the electronic viewfinder. I have to wear glasses to watch a screen or optical viewfinder. It is possible to adapt the EVF to my eyes. So I can use the camera without glasses while taking pictures.

    Welcome to the future. For really High inside/outside DR, I just bracket and blend in gimp or another editor.
    Gimp has an "open as layers" function and it makes this blend task as easy as pie. If you like the PS look, WIndows --> single Window mode.
    With the 1.2's smooth shutter and a steady hand, I fairly regularly bracket and blend Hand Held shots. Try it.

    I have the EM10 Mk2, and one day a couple of years ago, while walking along a river I like exploring, I noticed the pattern of the water flowing over the rocks. I set the shutter speed to one second, thinking what the hell, if it turns out, great, if not, oh well. Unless you pixel peep, you can't see any movement. The water over the rocks is blurry but the background is pretty sharp. I was amazed.

    Your reason for switching are valid and you backed them up with the video. I just have too much invested in Nikon (3 bodies and 27 lenses) to make a total switch, but I'm looking and caught between Fuji and Olympus, my wife owns a Sony A6000, so I can play, but not for pro work for me. I am a huge portrait guy so I'm sitting on the fence but have tested an older Fuji Xt1 and a Xt2 and liked what I saw, but haven't made the jump, but what you are saying is very valid.

    • @TedPurchase
      @TedPurchase  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah panasonic is a great choice too. I started going panasonic for the video capability's, but the g9 really beats the em1ii in stills as well. However I am sure the em1 iii will make a huge comeback. Fuji is great too, but they have some seriously weird handling quirks, and a lack of features, horrid battery life as well. Decent system though.

    • @yftan2873
      @yftan2873 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The size is the biggest benefits of M43 system. I too own a A6000, it is a good camera. sometimes, i feel like getting myself a full frame for the low light performance. I also like fujifilm color profiles but then whats holding me back?
      although i have the EM5. I did not use it as often as my GM5. with the GM5, I could snap on a 15mmf1.7 ,put it in my pocket and enjoy my photography wherever i go. i went on to get my self a epl7 attach a wide fisheye for selfie.
      even with 2 cameras and 2 lens. it is small enough to carry around. I am always afraid that if i got a bulky full frame, i would not be enjoying photography as much as what i have now.

      Can you do a stills test of em 1ii vs g9?

    • @TedPurchase
      @TedPurchase  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't have the em1ii anymore to do a side by side comparison. I feel like the g9 has a slight edge, but it's really hard to tell the difference to be honest. Very similar performance in dr, and low light. The g9 seems to have vastly vastly better color science. The em1ii always looked off and over saturated.

    • @TedPurchase
      @TedPurchase  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say a big benefit too is the price and incredible features. Can't beat the m43 stabilization. It's so great for video.

      Kamil Lisowski well I was relating high shutter speed to high iso

    • @TedPurchase
      @TedPurchase  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah that's somewhat true, the bigger sensor will give you better high iso images. I can tell you right now with the em1ii I wouldn't hesitate to shoot as 3200 iso, and the g9 I wouldn't hesitate to shoot 6400 iso. Usually it's more than good enough. There are other factors that play in. Like the af, the g9's af just kills my old d500, leaves it in the dust. Also they now have the 50-200 2.8-4 a stop faster than any 100-400 for ff. So that extra lens speed really closes the gap as well letting you get twice the shutter speed at the same iso.

    key features of MFT system:
    - low dynamic range
    - 10 bit readout with electronic shutter (on newest cameras). Forget about 12/14 bit readout.
    - small battery life, i.e. 200-300 shots from 1 battery
    - there are NO really bright zooms. That`s one you mention as "pro grade" F2.8 is equivalent to F4 on full frame
    - enormous price. Yes, system price as a whole (including flashes, acessories, maintenance, etc.) is BIGGER than canicon FF systems

    • @EnterAName-l3y

    Great. Subscribed. Nice, calm, no nonsense demeanor. I bought the G9 , and while loving it overall I just had a wedding (photography) in REALLY low light(outside, no bouncing, no possibility of off camera flash, tough). There my Canon 5div pulled ahead, but otherwise... I am split between sending this back, making a financial effort and getting the A7r3 instead, but I would miss the tilting screen, the massive viewfinder, the stabilization, the post focus stacking in camera, the highres in camera, the 6k photo, the 4k60p. And I generally didn't have love stories with Sony cameras in the past. Plus their lenses(the good ones) are more expensive. Would you consider replacing your Oly with Sony?

    • @TedPurchase
      @TedPurchase  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well if anything I would look at getting a second camera for extreme low light situations where you can't use flash. The a7s is the highest rated camera for high iso performance and it's fairly cheap. Personally I am fine with using m43 indoors without flash as an emergency. I just use 1.4 primes stick it wide open, auto iso, 1/80th sec shutter speed. Yeah investing in Sony is super duper expensive though. Maybe just get a 50mm 1.8 and the a7s for extreme situations. Glad you liked this video. I am trying my best to make great content that's straight forward and honest.

    You said you shoot weddings,so can you shoot RAW and make large prints,over like 16"?I am having a look currently at the smaller,lighter systems,as a second camera,because my FF is sooooooo bulky,although I love my brutish looking FF.Oh and don't worry because I am more than capable enough to take my own look at the flash and see how it moves.

    • @TedPurchase
      @TedPurchase  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally you don't really notice the difference on larger prints. Because you are viewing them from further away. You wouldn't view a 13x19 print from a few inches away. I wouldn't hesitate to give m43 a shot. If anything you can still use it as a great travel camera if it won't cut the mustard for weddings. What I have noticed most is that the smaller sensor gives me less leeway for mistakes, but I still have leeway, and I have all these other great features that make it much easier to shoot. Best of luck with your buying decisions.

      It's an acquired taste to that camera. It's really fun. But the af isn't very good on the entry level Olympus cameras. That's why I generally recommend the g85. The other issues I have is the ring from the strap pokes in my hand. Really annoying. There are after market grips that take care of that. But other than that.... The em10 ii is a really great fun camera, small, great image quality, great ibis, and a ton of features. And it is dirt cheap. I sold mine with the two lens kit for 500$, that was about the market value and it's probably cheaper now. It's a lot of camera for that price. Hope you like it eventually, if it doesn't you might wanna get the g85 instead.

    On the IBIS point, I'm using pentax and they have IBIS too, though for some reason i can never do a half a second to one second exposure that is still acceptably sharp. Not sure if it's because the sensor is bigger so the IBIS doesnt work so well or it is just that pana & oly do it better than pentax

    • @TedPurchase
      @TedPurchase  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's a mixture of all those things. M43 cameras have tiny sensors, and some have huge bodies like the g9. So there is a lot of room. There are also other factors involved. On bigger higher resolution sensors you should notice imperfections more. But the tech plays a huge part as well. Especially the dual stabilization technology, it's getting to be pretty damn good.

    Thanks for doing this video! I currently shoot Nikon but appreciate your review of Olympus MFT system. I was looking for a lighter but capable system for the photography I do. I tried the Nikon 1 V2 but was looking for a professional mirrorless setup. Olympus seems to be leading the way. I feel mirrorless is definitely the future of photography.

    • @TedPurchase
      @TedPurchase  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah olympus is great, but actually after trying panasonic I am liking it a little bit better. Nice thing is they both use the same lenses. Plus I am getting into video work now and panasonic is much better at that. The nikon 1 system might have been great if they put effort into supporting it and getting the technology up to date. Unfortunately there are no real 1" sensor removable lens systems that are supported anymore. Considering how goo the sensors are getting for those it seems like it would be a great choice. Especially the range you could get with such small glass. I would recommend going to the camera store and trying out the mirror less cameras. It's just night and day vs dslrs. Anyways best of luck.

    The new full frame mirrorless cameras are the same size as the M4/3 ones. Nikon Z6 weighs exactly as much as E-M1 Mark II. Actually, Nikon Z6 with the new 24-70 f/4 is 1050 grams and the E-M1 Mark II with 12-40 f/2.8 is 950 grams. That is indistinguishable. Plus, with FF sensor being two stops cleaner than a M4/3 one, The FF gathers more total light and has better resolution at the same price and same size. And it has better EVF than Mark II and pretty good IBIS too. So no disadvantage there. I have both FF and M4/3 cameras and the FF one is simply better.

    Great info. How do you get on with the menu system on the Em1? It looks very complex at least when I had a look at one in the shop

    • @TedPurchase
      @TedPurchase  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The menus are actually really great once you learn them. I havn't had much of an issue. I feel like with any camera there are really a lot of unnecessary items and it could be more refined. But my biggest complaint is that there is not custom menu like in the high end Panasonic and in the Nikon. Other than that they're decent, and the camera is so customizable that you rarely need to step into the menu.

    • @richardseekins24
      @richardseekins24 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the menu system is a problem with most digital cameras I just found the Olympus one really hard work.

    • @TedPurchase
      @TedPurchase  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol just wait until you try panasonic. It is way worse, but at least you get custom menus. Also these cameras have so many more features than a lot of canons and nikons, so it's just that many more menu items clogging everything up.

    Really great video! I'm Robert, and used to be into photography as a kid to teens (I'm now 57). I've been out of it for years and just discovered mirrorless cameras - very exiting. I have a (silly) question for you. If I just want to have fun shooting pictures - fast and easy - without fussing with apertures, speed, depth of field too much, etc. I would love to know what good quality "point and shoot" options there are. And, I would love to know, especially, about the sharpness of the lenses at that price point ($200-$300) or lower. It would be so gratifying to go out and shoot - knowing that I will most likely be happy with a sharp image. That, for me, is the fun of it - grabbing something and having it come out with marvelous sharpness. Do you happen to know much about that? i.e.: Are Nikon lenses really that much sharper - or is it that it doesn't matter with the cheaper cameras? Thank you for your attention. I went to your blog and saw some of your work. Bravo!! Thanks - Rob in Los Angeles.

    • @TedPurchase
      @TedPurchase  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you like my work. I would look at getting a used sony rx100 iii off of ebay for that price. Imo most of the higher end image quality isn't really noticeable in a lot of situations. The bigger sensors can really help out when you need more dynamic range to bring up shadows, or better low light performance. But generally you really only notice the difference when pixel peeping most of the time. For casual shooting you will be fine with that sony. Or you can pick up an em10 series off of ebay used with a cheap lens. That will also be a good choice. Hope this helps you get back into photography and get some great photos Robert.

      Thank you so much for your attention and expertise. I see that the Sony comes with a Zeiss lens! That does look promising (smile). About lenses, I worked in a black and white film school/developing lab for a while (years ago - and I noticed that the few students who were shooting with Nikons always did seem to have the sharpest images. That's why I have a strong impression that the Nikon, or Nikkor lenses are so good (and all the advertising and word of mouth through the years). I will certainly look toward Sony and Zeiss! Thanks again. Rob

    • @TedPurchase
      @TedPurchase  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol I don't think the m50 is a bad choice at all to be honest. It lacks some features and lens selection. But you get incredible af though. Very beginner friendly too. But yeah once you really learn a lot about cameras and gear and all that spend like an entire day in a camera store testing every brand out there. You might be surprised on which one you like the best. Canon might not be bad to stick with. Especially if you're adapting ff lenses. Those will come in handy when canon releases their ff mirrorless. Which might be a good move. I think they are going all out with that camera.

    Sure those lenses are small but don’t forget physics. The f number is just the relation between the focal length and aperture opening on the lens. It will still let in alot less light.

    • @tedp9945
      @tedp9945 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      There's a little bit more to it than that.
      What you wanna go off of is the t stop not the fstop. And the m43 has lenses the not only bring in the same amount of light as Nikon, but more. Where the bigger sensors get the advantage is from the pixel pitch. The photo sites are bigger usually which lets them measure light more accurately. And there's other factors in that mess as well. From my personal experience the low light performance between my Nikon gear and Olympus gear was completely negligible. Something I would only really notice while pixel peeping them together.

    Good points Ted. Its a shame that M 4/3 has bias against it when the evidence and professional work from the Olympus Visionaries and Tracy Maglosky prove its every bit as good for professional work. The proof is in the pudding and the images. I’m just not there yet! Perhaps do a few examples comparing the Nikon to your Olympus? Look at this: www.sulasula.com/en/olympus-for-nature-and-wildlife-photography-reasons-to-switch/

      Yeah tracy is great. I don't pretend that m43 can get the same results as ff. However the current cameras are more than capable for most professional work. And they are really nice for casual work as well. You save yourself a lot of joint pain and money too. And yeah Iv'e talked to Tracy a few times shes amazing!

    You're far from being the average american. The american likes it big: big country, big cars, big kids, big wife, big camera and so on... he'd rather take some vitamins than switch to a smaller, lightweight camera. I guess I'm happy to learn there's some diversity among you ppl, after all. Cheers!

    Great video, I too enjoy my Olympus ,but I also really enjoy my Nikon D500. I find there is a use for both tools.

      I shot with the d500 for about a year. It was my last dslr before going mirror less. It's an absolute beast 100%, and a great camera. However the biggest reason I switched was the lack of af accuracy due to the pdaf system, and the lack of af speed and hunting issues in lv. Even with good nikon brand lenses I had some issues, especially with a super shallow dof. But when it was hitting properly it was a fantastic camera. It was mirrorless it would be insane. Nothing wrong with using both.

    let olympus because my lenses are lumix and work better with lumix, I own G85 GX7 and Nikon D7200 and I can tell you that for street it is better m4 / 3 without a doubt, for portraits it is almost the same both systems, but G85 works better the Jpg , on the other hand Nikon is the king in Raw, for landscape nikon with sigma 17 50 f2.8 and G85 with lumix 12 60 shooting in Jpg wins Lumix with light and at night Nikon wins (all the time in Jpg)
    Today I will not leave my D7200 nor my G85 ... in street use GX7 that is great too (but with light) without light I must take G85 ...
    The 3 for me, they complement each other very well and I do not need FF

    I am just a hobbyist, but I take my photography seriously. I am ditching Nikon within the next year or two and I am switching to mirror-less too. But, I think I will be switching to Sony A7III although I will be giving Olympus a serious look.

      a7iii is great too. Currently I am using panasonic because I am getting more involved in video work. Later one I will pick up some sony gear, mostly just for my RE work and portraits. I played extensively with the a7iii. The image quality and capabilities are out of this world. However the handling just isn't anywhere near the g9. I wish I could combine the two lol. So I'll be picking up both. Oly is still great. Little bit long in the tooth on the flagship, but I am sure the em1 iii will be a game changer just like the ii was. Best of luck. You will like mirror less. Much more fun.

    Two M43 bodies. One with the 12-40mm zoom the other a 100-150mm prime. And an RX100 II for video. That's how I roll :)

    WHAAAAT??? These 2.8 Olympus lens are by no means equivalents on FF 2.8 lens - they are like 5.6 FF lenses! That's why there are so small!
    What are you going to switch to now? Olympus is basically dead, Panasonic will probably focus on the L-mount now.
