To all the people in this video, I pray that God blesses each and everyone of you. I know what you all have gone through because I personally have delt with my fellow Puerto Ricans who came here where I live to start a new life. What I can say to make things better is to find good people who are willing to be your friends. If you can get to stay with family that's even better, just don't be alone. Get out and have fun and make the best of it. If its possible to go back to Puerto Rico then go back, but if you stay then make the best of it. God bless you all and I hope nothing but the best for all of you.

Sucks to know that my people from Dom Rep are freeloaders in a alien country and DR is called the queen of welfare because 7 or 8 of each 10 are relying on tax payers and scamming the government of that country. It is a shame that makes me feel like covering my face on the street.

To all the young Puerto Ricans! The future of our island is at risk if we don't do something, our island will be complete transformed in a way that will make our ancestors cry. This has happened before to another People's in history. The Best Way To Help Puerto Rico Is To Go Back To Puerto Rico. Even if you weren't born there your still Puerto Rican by blood.
We need young people from all walks of life
We need Doctors, Farmers, Police, Mechanics, Engineers, Technicians, Teachers, Musicians, Electricians, Builders, Artist, Scientist, Environmentalists and many more Different skills and trades. I know there is a fear that sits in all of our hearts regarding Puerto Rico, but if we lift our hearts above that fear, we will succeed in saving our island and be able to leave a lasting legacy for our descendants.

    UPDATE:
This has gotten a lot of attention, and I believe I need to make amends.
This comment was made more as a comparison to the reaction to both disasters, as well as the death toll involved. I was in no way attempting to trivialize either, but highlight the seriousness of Hurricane Maria.
I will admit this wasn't a well thought out comment, and I apologize for the offence it caused some viewers. ----
By the way, more American citizens died in Hurricane Maria and its aftermath than in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
    Just thought people should know.

I left Florida at the beginning of 2017 after a very ugly divorce. I sweared as I was living Florida that there was nothing that would bring me back to Florida again. So I left Florida and arrived in Puerto Rico. I asked the people living in my house to look for another place to rent since I needed the house for myself. As they left, and the same month I moved in... the fucking hurricanes came in and just ripped out my house from the ground... guess what... I am back in Florida once again and unable to move back to my home island. I truly hate hurricanes, I truly do.

@Lord Zephyros Shut that shit up, lol! First off the majority who prevents Puerto Rico from becoming a state are just fools being manipulated by their politicians to retain their semblance of independence yet at the same time rely on US resources to prop their corruption. In no way will your government allow Puerto Rico to become independent because they are dependent on the US.

Christopher Fairfield, Puerto Rico is brutally neoliberal. It has one of the highest income inequality levels in Latin America and the world (0.537 GINI index). So puerto rico is pretty much the opposite of socialist, just like the vast majority of countries in Latin America due to US intervention during the cold war.

Support the governor after the hurricane and send the necessary help for the island to keep functioning, so they keep getting the annual Federal taxes. Obama would have done worse. Independence is literally the only way. USA wouldn't bring it into the union and if they did it wouldn't workout. Plus the "Puerto Rican/Boricuan identity" would cease to exist. Vast majority of Puerto Ricans see themselves as Puerto Ricans/Boricuans 1st, some don't even consider themselves American. The USA doesn't have anything to gain from PR and most Puerto Ricans that do want statehood only want it b/c they think it'll better their situation. Before you say Puerto Rico should become the 51st state, look into the culture and learn about their history.

Less developed countries always pay a high cost in human life when a natural disaster hits. PR does not have its act together, and this is the natural level of the people and institutions in PR. Look at Katrina. This was a ND in a first world country, but the response seemed like a third world country. If we tolerate corruption and incompetence, then when an ND hits, this is what occurs.

@Keyboard I totally agree. However, that's does not change the fact that the US after freeing Puerto Rico (or winning it as a war bounty) decided to stay perpetuating colonialism in the island. An island that by 1897 got it's autonomy from Spain by Spanish law making Puerto Rico not a colony of Spain but a Providence with it's own economy and rule of law, economy and law that became obsoleted by American colonialism in the island; the US basically reset the whole socio-political-economical system which is the main reason Puerto Rico is what it is and how it is right now.

The reason FEMA help was a failure is because a lot of people could not prove they owned their homes. Without ownership documents people are also in danger of people taking their property if they leave for the States. The struggle to rebuild will soon be met by private rich land developers trying to turn the Island into one huge resort or playgroung for the wealthy. Common people wont be able to afford a visit unless to find work in a service position. They're just waiting for everyone to leave and abandon the Island. When the Island is abandoned it can be taken over. Then it will be rebuilt, but into what?

Many hospitals were not prepared and couldn't attend the amount of people that needed medical assistance. We were without communications for almost 2 days. Our Governor had to go to the towns on helicopter. He gave satellite phones to the mayors which had no other means of communication.

The US government didn't do much. If they were on their own they could've gotten more aid from other countries. Because PR is owned by the US they can't do any international trade or anything without the approval of the USA. If they were on their own it would be rough at first but with good governance things would work out. Puerto Rico is wayyyy to dependent on a country they doesn't give a f*** about them, they barely have an agricultural program every little thing is imported from usa. Independence doesn't look good for the short term but it's ultimately the only way.

One of the biggest dilema Island ricans have , is this huge trend of speaking Spanglish , and English in the island to make themselves different from the norm ..Ricans complaint too damn much …!! But the main issue is that Mnay are born and raised in the island and are not American Puerto Ricans .. As Young man back in my 10 years old I was living in Kentucky back 1981 … Fast forward to my late 1989 I left cause I n my heart I never felt Puerto Rican it’s like I had spiritual identity with things of the U.S .. I tried many times to live the island and I was right …. The huge problems of life styles i came across was huge , I was bullied , critized and more by family and locals .. The irony is that when you know your a positive person , and you leave your family to make name for yourself and come back to the island locals there hate you for it and really are thieves to steal that identity and want to copy it … In 2006 towards 2010 the amount of locals that left for better jobs to Florida were also lead by many as trend … Many Puerto Ricans who leave are not and will have never have that American spirit .. Question is if you know you have something good , WHY THE F$&@ , do you follow others to country that you don’t spiritually connect to …??? Think about it ?? Many should start leaving to Spain or Just unite and fight where you live …!!!
