I feel the same way. I'm much older than you but I have decided to just go for it. I'm an introvert, I live alone and I'm a super-private person! Having people I "know" seeing my videos is so uncomfortable. However, the older you get, the more you DGAF 😆 I also have a lot of experience and feel like I'm authentic, which are often things that are missing on social media these days! You could start off with videos that don't show your face? Until you get more comfortable with it all. I follow a couple of women my age who vlog about the same niche as mine will be, and they started off literally with NO face on camera. They managed to get thousands of subs and views before deciding to go on camera. Why don't you give it a go....just upload a few videos to begin with - you don't have to make them public at first. Good luck.
Loving your videos, so inspiring. You nailed this topic for me, wanted to start a channel years ago but felt too shy and old and didn't know what to talk about. I am determined to get out of my comfort zone and do it now. Just learning about editing and only have a 6 year old Samsung phone to film on but that isnt going to stop me this time. Keep it going, loving the content.
43 year old stay at home Mom here too lol. My son just turned 18 and I have more time on my hands and have wanted to do videos for a while, I repair sewing machines. I used to make videos for fellow EDSer’s in the rare disease community but that can really burn you out. So thanks to your encouragement I’m starting in a different niche, (sewing with a focus on what I do personally in cleaning, servicing and restoration) Bad Stitch Restoration is what I’ve named the channel, and have brainstormed a bunch of addition things I could film like tips on using different attachments, troubleshooting, small sewing jobs you can do in a few minutes like hemming your kids pants or fixing your husbands torn scrubs (why I got my first sewing machine over 20 years ago). Your videos have been incredibly helpful for my very ADD brain to focus better on what I want to do.
And after thinking about it I realized my channel name was too specific, so now it's just Bad Stitches lol. And I put a picture of myself instead of the more generic decorative vintage side plate cover which I realized some may not even know what it is.

Hi Rob! I just stumbled onto your videos in the past week and have been binge watching! This video is amazing. I have been throwing around the idea of starting a channel documenting my journey of moving to Japan to start a farm business as a 45 year old with a family that includes 2 older children. You always see channels w/ younger people with no kids, so I thought it might be an interesting topic.
That definitely sounds interesting... and I'm sure lots of other people would love to follow you on your journey through videos that you make! It could potentially help others who want to do the same thing. Best of luck to you!! :-)
Hi Rob, people like you for your empathic mind, for your friendly and authentic style of speaking. I'm your generation man from Germany and living since 6 years in Japan. I like to listen to you for what you give, without any special expectation of topic. Maybe just because it's you. I never reflected about that, but your video inspired me to think about the true reason for listening to an unknown person. Maybe you also give the feeling to people, of having a friend. The type we would like to have in our real life.
Thank you so much for such kind words... so very nice of you :) If you can make a friendly connection with your audience and provide them with the help they're looking for... real help... that can only help to grow your audience. All the best to you :-)
First, I love that I found your channel. I am 42 and have pivoted my channel a few times but I still have 350 subs. I write and illustrate ukulele-themed children's books. I have six available, along with books in other genres. I have made my channel kid-friendly with sing-alongs and some read-alouds and book trailers. But I want to make different read-alouds that are more interactive and with me on camera. I'm thinking of making a playlist for each book and including the read-aloud, related original ukulele sing-alongs (some songs are in the books too), and parent/teacher guide for each book. It's after all that...that I just don't know what content I would focus on, on a regular basis.
Hi Susan and thanks for your comment! That sounds like a great niche... very focused which is awesome! What immediately came to my mind is your target audience, which is children, or maybe teachers? One way to significantly expand your audience might be to also make videos that explain or show people how to do what you do. How to make the books, how to make your videos, how to play ukulele also! There's so much you're doing that other people would love to know about. Try thinking a little less about your end product, and think more about the process you go through to make it... and make videos on those things. I'm not suggesting you give up on the videos you're making... but you could create a schedule where maybe you post your regular videos on a certain day of the week, and then on another day of the week, you post one of these different kinds of videos that I mentioned. Or if that's too busy a schedule, do that once a month. You may find a lot of people are very interested in how you do what you do. I hope that helps! Best of luck :-)
@@RobtheMaritimer thank you! I think I could greatly expand my audience if I focused more on teachers and how they could use my books and songs. I have an Art Education background so I would feel comfortable incorporating some art material too, especially as it relates to my books and how they were created. I would only feel comfortable sticking to the basics that are mentioned in my books as far as ukulele instruction goes. I am not a ukulele or music teacher and sort of want to stay in my lane with that, and not directly instruct people how to play. (Although, I do "casual" ukulele instruction on the side and at my church with the group I started there.)
@@CreatedbySusanMontgomery That sounds great! Trying to convince myself that my quirky awkwardness will grow on other people, too LOL.
Just wanted to comment to say I’m a big fan of what you do. I’m a comedian and an artist (aka a person who has a hard time defining his “niche” 😆), and watching you has been helpful. I’m very impressed by your output and sincerity. Glad to see it’s working well for you. I think you do a lot of good for a lot of people. Thanks for putting it out there.
Hi Rob, Nova Scotia sounds so beautiful. Would you ever do a video showing your city, fun outings, places of interest, restaurants, places to stay, etc…?
Thanks! And yes I do plan on doing something like that. That's not the type of video I'm particularly good at, but would like to try... so the first one I do will likely take me quite some time to put together!
I love functional and natural health. I know a lot and will be sharing more on my channel. I also love manifestations, nature, animals and travel. I try to fit all in on my little channel. Can’t wait to grow, get more comfy in front of the camera and educate people. You are right, things I love to talk about is saturated. So, it will be a bit more challenging for me to grow. 😊
If your niche is saturated then it's even more important to put yourself out there and become your brand! That's just my opinion though! Best of luck :-)
Thank you for your videos. Also I appreciate that you don’t edit/cut parts of the speech. I find that natural speech is important and feel distressed when it’s too edited. And you with peanut at the end..😂 made my day. I was feeling a bit down but you made me laugh. Thanks!!
Fellow Haligonian here. Lovin' the channel so far Rob. Well done sir, well done... By the way I'm not sure you know but your over 40 TH-cam video was featured in the latest Film Booth email newsletter so you're definitely doing something right!
@@RobtheMaritimer I'm not sure he's made a video about the topic yet as I've only been reading emails for the most part. Here in Greece on vacation ATM but if I get a chance and see it I'll tag you in the comments of the video.
That is cool that Rob the Maritimer was featured. Good job! ( My channel was featured in Prison Guard Monthly, but it was an example of what not to allow ).
Great video again. And yes, it is true, I come back for you and not so much for the topic. I like the relaxed style. Keep going! To be honest, I usually skip the bloopers part. Can you see if I am the only one that is skipping that part in your retention graph? Is it a popular part of your video?
Thank you :) And no you aren’t the only one who skips the bloopers… but those who watch them comment that they love them… AND the fact is that I love editing them in… it’s super fun! So I’m going to keep putting them in. Feel free to skip if you want… but I highly advise others to put them into their videos… it’s a lot of fun and a lot of people love them :) Thanks for commenting!
@@RobtheMaritimer I do think that the bloopers fit your style and that is certainly worth something. What I mean with that is that you are open to show others that it can be hard to do everything correctly in one go, and usually it does not happen the first time. A lot of people don't realize that sitting in front of the camera is hard work. You have to concentrate while you are under stress. What I keep telling myself in my head is that I have to stay calm and look confident while everybody could be watching the video in the future. It is like telling somebody that he can think about anything but not a pink elephant. What do you think that person is thinking about? I do notice that you are slightly nervous, but I admire that you still keep going, and you know that it will become less stressful every time you do it again. Big thumbs up for you 👍👍
Absolutely!! I think that's something that probably resonates with a LOT of people... lots of people don't like their jobs and would rather chase a dream... so lots of people are probably searching for how to do that exact thing! You could document the process as you go through it, point out the pros and cons, any trouble you run into, the joy it brings you, etc. Also... I'm not advising you to leave your job lol! Only you know if that's something you can or should do. Don't expect TH-cam earnings to replace a full time job anytime soon... that can be a long game! I hope that helps :-)
Hi Rob what computer/ laptop do you use and what editing app do you recommend. I started my channel just doing shorts so far coz I have difficulties with computers. 65 years young but computer literate. Thanks PJ
I switched from a PC to a Macbook about 18 months ago. I have a 16" Macbook Pro with the M1 Max chip (2021), 2 TB hard drive. and 32 GB RAM. It's a power computer and renders videos quite fast. I also have 3 additional monitors plugged into it for when I do live streaming. I find Macs very easy to use/learn... and that's after having been a PC user for over 25 years :)
Great advice! It's getting me thinking I'm a wife and mom of 2 who works full time outside of the home. I am currently learning about digital marketing and high ticket dropshipping. I'm hoping to merge the two and maybe throw in organization. Would love to know your thoughts..
I don't have any experience with dropshipping specifically, but whatever it is you want to "offer" your customers/clients, TH-cam is a fantastic place to get leads. Don't think of TH-cam as a business in and of itself, but as a lead generation tool for your business (in your case, dropshipping). If you can get to a place where you're making one or two videos a week and in those videos you advertise your dropshipping business or a course that teaches others how to drop ship, that's how you can drive traffic to your business. Best of luck with it!
Hey Rob if someone is going to start making their first videos what would you recommend for video length? And should you also put out shorts on TH-cam?
The video length will depend on the content of your videos. I personally like 8-10 minutes, but sometimes I need longer to say what I want to say... so 25-30 minutes is ok too. As for Shorts... I like to focus on long form content... and then use Shorts to help promote your long form content. I'm currently making Shorts that are just clips from my longer form videos... and the first one I uploaded just today ;-) I'm going to upload one every day for the next little while and I'll let people know how that goes :-)
Thanks a lot that’s great advice. I really appreciate your time. I’m a chef & I’m going to create content for fun as a hobby. I’m thinking about doing more reviews because it’s seems more time efficient than cooking videos. Plus I can’t sell food but I can market certain cooking products. Taking a lot of pointers from you man 👍🏻
I’m so glad you found this niche, Rob. Very encouraging for this non-photogenic wanna be YTer. Have you estimated the avg # of hours you spend per day/week or episode? Apologies if you’ve addressed this before. I’ve watched a few of your vids. My time will open up in a couple weeks so I’ll be watching your vids and livestreams more faithfully. Are you available for brainstorming?
On average I probably spend about 1 full day on a video now. This one took me about half a day to get my thoughts straight and create my bullet point list (late Tuesday after my live stream), then yesterday I did the recording in the morning and editing in the evening.... finished editing and uploaded it this morning. So I guess you can call that 2 days, but with a bunch of breaks during that time where I was doing other things too. But this video was a little longer than some... I've recently done some videos where from inception to posted only took half a day.... that includes everything from planning, recording, editing, uploading, thumbnail, etc. I hope that helps!
I use Camtasia (by TechSmith) to edit my videos… I think it’s great to learn on and it’s the best if you also want to share your screen. You can add music using Camtasia too :)
Another great video! Some great inspiration. When I've found my niche, how would you recommend naming my channel? Just use my name/nickname so that I'm open to changing niche, or should i put the niche in the name to help people find it?
You don't have to put the niche in the name, but you can... it's totally up to you. I personally like putting your name in the channel, or at least part of it (like I did). And yes, you can always change your channel name in the future if you like :-)
If you have a few different topics you're interested in, should you have different pages or Is it OK to have 1 main topic but upload a few different types of content every once in a while?
I think it's ok to upload a few different topics every now and again, especially for young channels without a huge following yet... your niche may change depending on what your audience asks you for so it's good to experiment a little. Best of luck to you :-)
you are so amazing and encouraging! I am torned between doing videos in french or in english, I have a thick french accent when I speak english but I express myself better in english... If I do it in english I am worried people wont like it due to my accent but if i do thm in french I will constantly looking for translation of what I want to say 😅... Dilema dilema, maybe thats my niche 😅
Yes that could very well be your niche! But also, whichever way you decide to go, know that the people you will attract to your videos and your channel will be people who love the way you speak. That's the way it works... as your channel grows it will be growing with people who want to hear what you say. Personally, I don't think a "thick accent" is an issue at all... that may be part of what draws people to you. I don't want to tell you which way to go, but if you can express yourself better in English, then that's probably what I would go with... and embrace your accent, just like other people will. I wish you the best of luck :-)

Well, I've done the easy part, created this new channel from scratch. I've amassed 2 subscribers already, sure, one of which is my daughter, but she still counts, right? The goal is to have the first video up within the week and go from there. The niche will be a work in progress.
@@RobtheMaritimer I'm putting together a quick montage of youtubers such as yourself who are encouraging others to start a channel. Are you ok with me using a few seconds from one of your videos in the montage in my first video?

I will rewatch it a few times and of course the whole course from the beginning. I need to learn it. Thank you for the efforts. Do you think you will change your channel name or do you think people recognise it? It just doesn't seem to be very nautical! That could make a video topic on its own.
I have no plans to change my channel name… there may be some brand recognition there and that’s the long term plan. Who knows what kind of videos I’ll be making in the future… maybe some more nautical ones… it’ll depend on what the viewers want :-)
I don't have a time limit on it yet... at least another week, perhaps 2 weeks? It depends on continuing demand and when I'll get the feedback for additional bonus content to create and add to it :-)

Haha yeah I was kind of going off on a tangent there... very easy to do when I'm not reading from a script!! :-)
It’s the bloopers for me! Love them!
Thanks for this video
I'm glad you liked it :-)
Superb work dear. Keep it up. God bless you
Thank you so much :-)
I love your videos! Very helpful and supportive. You're great, but Peanut is the star of the show 😃
Thank you so much... and yes, she certainly is!! Haha
This is fantastic! Appreciate you!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much... very much appreciated!! Take care and best of luck to you :-)
Thank you for saying ''neesh' for niche - 'nich' sets my teeth on edge every time! :)
Haha! You're welcome!
Its fine either way
Hi Rob,
Nova Scotia sounds so beautiful. Would you ever do a video showing your city, fun outings, places of interest, restaurants, places to stay, etc…?
Thanks! And yes I do plan on doing something like that. That's not the type of video I'm particularly good at, but would like to try... so the first one I do will likely take me quite some time to put together!
Let's gooooo Rob, keep up the great work sir.
Thank you :-)
very inspiring!
Thank you so much for your video it is very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Chosing a niche IS a Real problem Indeed.
It sure is... lots of people get stuck on it and don't go any further!
Another blasting episode 🎉
Thank you... glad you liked it :-)
My niche is finance independance and still you gave very good ideas, thankas very much :)
You're very welcome!
Thank you for your videos. Also I appreciate that you don’t edit/cut parts of the speech. I find that natural speech is important and feel distressed when it’s too edited. And you with peanut at the end..😂 made my day. I was feeling a bit down but you made me laugh. Thanks!!
Laughter is great medicine... glad I could help :-)
Any man who loves his cat, is a man worth listening to. Very good informative video, Rob and Peanut. Thank you!
Haha that made me laugh :) Glad you enjoyed it!
Fellow Haligonian here. Lovin' the channel so far Rob. Well done sir, well done...
By the way I'm not sure you know but your over 40 TH-cam video was featured in the latest Film Booth email newsletter so you're definitely doing something right!
Welcome fellow maritimer! Thank you for the kind words :-) I did not know I was featured in Film Booth... I'll have to try to find that. Thank you :-)
@@RobtheMaritimer I'm not sure he's made a video about the topic yet as I've only been reading emails for the most part. Here in Greece on vacation ATM but if I get a chance and see it I'll tag you in the comments of the video.
@@thetraveledtourist Much appreciated 🙂
That is cool that Rob the Maritimer was featured. Good job!
( My channel was featured in Prison Guard Monthly, but it was an example of what not to allow ).
This is just so good. Amazing!
I'm glad you liked it :-)
Great video again.
Big thumbs up for you 👍👍
Great video. Thanks again
Glad you enjoyed it :-)
Another awesome video. Very good advice.
I appreciate that :)
You are so damn endearing😊
Thank you :-)
Would you do a video on leaving a job to pursue your dream over 50?🇬🇧🇺🇸
Absolutely!!
Niche Comes from french ''nicher'' which means ''to make a nest''. So to niche down IS really pertinent as an expression.
Thanks for that!! :-)
@@RobtheMaritimer awesome tips thank you!
@@RobtheMaritimer would you recommend TH-cam over Instagram?
Very encouraging for this non-photogenic
wanna be YTer.
I'm a programmer and a tech teacher.. thinking about recording my lessions for students.
What software do you use to edit and music....etc
I use Camtasia (by TechSmith) to edit my videos… I think it’s great to learn on and it’s the best if you also want to share your screen. You can add music using Camtasia too :)
Another great video! Some great inspiration. When I've found my niche, how would you recommend naming my channel? Just use my name/nickname so that I'm open to changing niche, or should i put the niche in the name to help people find it?
You don't have to put the niche in the name, but you can... it's totally up to you. I personally like putting your name in the channel, or at least part of it (like I did). And yes, you can always change your channel name in the future if you like :-)
Have a great day!
You too! :-)
Peanut does not want to talk about niches 😂 she let out a big yawn. Thanks for another nice video.
You're absolutely right!! She's heard it many times before... bored of it lol!
@@RobtheMaritimer Awww you are the best ! (Maritimers are the best but shhh its a secret 😁). It's crazy how many obstacle and procrastination we can do for things that can be so simple 😅. Always fight the voice that says, "just do it woman".🤣
Well, I've done the easy part, created this new channel from scratch. I've amassed 2 subscribers already, sure, one of which is my daughter, but she still counts, right? The goal is to have the first video up within the week and go from there. The niche will be a work in progress.
She definitely counts!! I think my first two subs were my kids too haha! Best of luck to you!! :-)
I subscribed!
@@RobtheMaritimer I'm putting together a quick montage of youtubers such as yourself who are encouraging others to start a channel. Are you ok with me using a few seconds from one of your videos in the montage in my first video?
Now, a TH-cam channel niche down on walking Cats, would be awesome.!
I think Peanut would disown me if I tried taking her for a walk outside!! She wouldn't let me back in to her office ;)
I am still finding it difficult to grow with respect to the efforts being put
The effort is definitely higher in the beginning... things get easier with practice and time :-)
@@RobtheMaritimer Thanks for responding Rob. Maybe because of my Niche in RPA. I need to consider expanding the niche.
Did you launch the course?
Yes... there's a link in the description of this (and other) videos where you can take a look. I've also emailed everyone who was on the waiting list.
@@RobtheMaritimer Hey Rob, thank you for the reply. I don't know how I overlooked the link. I signed up for the 'cheaper' course. Already audited some videos. The audio/video synching ones. Still a bit lost and confused (like, why separate files and rejoin them again at all ?:)) but I guess some segments call for that action. I will rewatch it a few times and of course the whole course from the beginning. I need to learn it. Thank you for the efforts. I am not so much concerned about content generation but editing is what I need to work on. Your instruction is definitely better than Canva's website. I need to learn CapCut too. Gosh .. I hope to have a full blown channel by October.
@@RobtheMaritimer Still struggling with that question I asked months ago .. how do I use different or create rather, different video segments while audio remains the same .. :( .. and I don't wanna import separate tracks .. I record video and audio on the phone and import to Camtasia. Gosh, I don't wanna give up but my blood tests show extreme high levels of TSH.
Tough when the props move of their own accord.
Haha indeed!!
Peanut has NEVER been on the back of that chair in her LIFE, how dare you! 😅
Haha she DOES go up there on her own a lot!! She just doesn't like to be forced to go there if she's not into it ;-)
Do you think you will change your channel name or do you think people recognise it? It just doesn't seem to be very nautical! That could make a video topic on its own.
I have no plans to change my channel name… there may be some brand recognition there and that’s the long term plan. Who knows what kind of videos I’ll be making in the future… maybe some more nautical ones… it’ll depend on what the viewers want :-)
@@RobtheMaritimer if you were going to change it, the most sense would be just to use your name. Some maritime videos would be great too!
Rob, You have a nice fluffy tail!
haha!!
Haha! Thanks :-)
Aussie here: neesh it is
That's how it should be spelled too! haha
My channel is about my interests an hobbies...but i have so many😅😂 I only have 250 subs and very few watch hours...but im not giving up
That’s the spirit! Enjoy the process :-)
That’s Neesh-ay in French 🤣
Bob, how do we contact you.
Click the "About" link on my channel and there are different ways to contact me there. Cheers :-)
You didn't say it, but you did it.. include your cats in your videos!
Haha that’s always a good idea 🤣
Hello Peanut
She says hello back!
For how long is your beta testing price going to last?
I don't have a time limit on it yet... at least another week, perhaps 2 weeks? It depends on continuing demand and when I'll get the feedback for additional bonus content to create and add to it :-)
😂 I’m a Christian Classical Guitarist. You get much more niche than that. 😅
100% absolutely!! Well done :-)
