      I once went out with a bloke who told me the price of his new cannondale mtb, quite expensive, and told me to keep it to me. His wife joined us on the ride, we then came across a group of pensioners, 60-70 years old. We stopped to wait for his wife, who was 2,3 min behind us, the pensioners struck up a conversation, just as she joined us, they started to talk price. My friend mumbled something.. yeah, bikes cost some money. One of the old guys said "Oh, you dont need to me, cannondale, that kind of groupset, full suspension (this was early 2000s), you wont get something like under 110, 120.000 Belgium Francs (ca 2600 GBP). And he was exactly right! The rest of the ride was governed by a somewhat icy mood.

    Been riding for awhile now and never heard or seen any of these. A very real problem, though, is cyclists in a group developing "herd mentality". The rider forgets everything about traffic laws and common sense. "The top half of the pack made it through the turn...now a car's coming....need to turn to keep up with pack." You'd think it's just new riders, but I see experienced guys do it too.

    Before my first Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge in 2008 I asked how often do you eat in a race and was told "every twenty minutes" with no further elaboration. So I have my back pockets stuffed with a random assortment of gels energy bars assorted food. I ate anything every twenty minutes and within an hour and twenty minutes has severe cramp which I had for the next four hours. Later I bought some stuff from Hammer nutrition online and they sent out with it a book "How to succeed in endurance sports". The take home was that often people over eat hard to digest food which creates a backlog in your digestive system which the body tries to clear directing fluids to that end causing cramp. Since then I limit my calories two or three hundred calories per hour usually in liquid or gel form and haven't had the same problem with cramp since.

    I entered in a 40 km TT and long time ago, and I was trainng with this old manky Irishman, I think he was Irish Junior Champion many years previous. I'd been training with what I thought was a intelligent program and looked to post a decent time.. The day before the event the guy showed up with a aero TT bike, sloping tube, 24" front wheel, silk tubs, all that, and told me to use it... despite my better judgement, I fit it up as best as I could and went to the races. He was there, on a motorbike and screamed at me the whole TT, yelling at me to "reach out for the pain and embrace it" and various other crap... The whoe excercise stressed me out so much I blew coming home and lost minutes... And there he stood at the finish, berating me for making him and his bike look so bad after all he'd done for me.... If I wasn't heaving my guts out I would have smacked him....

      Bouré nothings wrong with Strava as a utility to map distance power times etc. It’s just the people above know that with every recorded ride you get the performance publicised. The tool is now mainly a “flex” for cyclists. I have only one recorded ride as I’ve just bought a bike to replace my running (knee is starting to hate me from years of road running) and even though I’m new to it my friends list gets to see it and have already commented that I should be quicker on this leg, push more on the sprint leg etc. Annoying and as a red blooded male next time I use it I will go balls out weather I want to or not just for the kudos 😂
      Joking apart it takes some of the fun out of what I’m enjoying quite casually.

      When I was doing my gym instructor course years ago the person doing the training said if someone comes into the gym looking for more of a work out on the the exercise bike you should "have the saddle lower to get a deep burn in the quadriceps !" That's pretty dangerous advice to give Joe Blogs looking to tone his leg up through cycling on a exercise bike ! All your doing there is training the muscle to work through a short range of motion and potentially damaging the ligaments in the knee cap through extended pedaling ! Definitely one of the most stupid things I've heard

    Ride a 65" fixed gear all winter from mid October till end February. It increases your cadence and slogging up steep hills increases your strength. And pedalling down steep hills at about 180 rpm makes you supple (or injured!) It's partly true but this was the genuinely perceived wisdom of 1966. I actually did a whole winter on 54" and couldn't do the first 25 mile TT of the year in more than about 74"!

    I do pedal backwards in descents for a short time (but not as fast as on the video).
    It makes different muscles work and helps to unwind the legs while still pedaling and keeping legs warm.
    It is much better than stopping pedalling, because legs will be cold at the end of the slope and it will take some time to warm them up again.

    Agree with all, excepted the 53x12 uphill. All depend circonstances, and this is an art to know when you've to push big and not, you can even alternate on long hills. So you alternate high pulse/high muscular effort. Voeckler uses this much in mountain.
    Worst advices :

    - "Use plastics to put on your shoes in winter" (so much perspiration, and cooling down after about 1 hour)

    A lot of people use bags over saddles in NYC when bikes are locked in the rain because the saddles foam will get soggy if it's stitched, a leather Brooks, or it's torn, when you sit on it it's like sitting on a wet sponge

    "Fixed gear is the best way to ride" I hear that a lot from friends then when when go uphills on rides I have to wait for them at the top

      Same here, whether it's for road bikes or simple commuting. Fixed gear is simple, but it's far from optimal in my area with a ton of hills. Most of the people riding fixed gear bikes are simply doing it because it's supposedly the new trend, and I see a ton of reckless college kids riding them brakeless in traffic.

    Definitely to ride as hard as you can. I have seen most of my partners (riding bycicle) doing that, it has been very very funny to see them totally out of breath in the middle of the normal journey.

    This one's pretty common I think; "You don't have to wear a helmet"

    • @souloftheage
      @souloftheage 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, the only INDEPENDENT data has shown that wearing a helmet gives motorist more confidence that they can drive closer to you, as you are "fully protected in case of a collision.",
      This research was done in England. Cant remember the researchers name.
      And helmets provide no protection from cervical spine injuries. As an anesthetist, I've seen enough paralyzed patients. I'd prefer to be dead than in a wheelchair-or worse-the rest of my life.
      And today's helmets wont save your brain from blunt force trauma(Natasha Richardson, Liam Neeson's wife was wearing a helmet on the beginner hill when she fell. She died from a cerebral hemmorage)-which is the most likely outcome in a bike-motor vehicle crash. I slammed my head into the pavement at 32mph and my Specialized helmet didnt even get a scratch. All that force was transferred to my brain and neck. I believe if I hadn't spent many years weightlifting(I'm a BIG rider) I'd probably be paralyzed from the neck down.
      There is an inflatable helmet that not only protects ones head from blunt force trauma but also stabilizes the neck when it insta-flates.
      It's $400 and sits around the neck. And people have told me "It's very warm".
      In general, helmets have been made NOT to protect the participants brain(The NFL's helmets are a disaster) but to LOOK good and colorful and advertise some logo.
      The bike helmets of old: the foam bands wrapped in leather offer far more protection than today's bio-engineering disasters.
      I DO wear. a helmet as the police in my city have nothing to do and I'm sure they'd love to give a cyclist a ticket....for anything.

    I've done the one legged up hill. Last spring I was in a climb on the biggest hill I ride regularly and I was shifting and chain suck struck. I was able to get out of my pedal and prevent the sack roll but then I was confronted with starting up hill and I could not quite get enough speed going where I could get my other foot in so I just carried on with just my left providing the power.
    Since then I've got a new bike and I can get in the pedals much more quickly on that bike. Funny enough I rode the old bike last weekend and it was not so natural getting into the pedals as it is on the new bike.
    As far as advice I'm not passing on, I guess the 53x12 theme is the one I've heard and tried a bit and do not work with anymore and advise otherwise on that one. A nephew of mine was talking about mashing and I advised otherwise. If I am going to eff up my knees I want to do it skiing.

    Worst advice? Assume you, as a cyclist, have the right of way. I've known experienced cyclists who still make this mistake. Hmmm, who risks the most should the two meet, a cyclist or a motorist?

    • @lasersailor4life
      @lasersailor4life 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      This depends on where you live and the local bicycle laws. Here in Fl, bikes are considered vehicles and have every right that a car has. :D

    • @AlexandarHullRichter
      @AlexandarHullRichter 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Anthony Scott That's true in California as well, but like a car, bicycles don't always have right of way, and they must obey all traffic laws, like stop signs, traffic lights, etc.

    Dear GCN Could you please explain why some of these are bad? For instance we get advised from our trainer to indeed ride 53x11 uphill to build muscles. Is this indeed stupid and if so why?

    • @gcn
      @gcn  9 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      There's no evidence to say that it builds power, or strength, and it can actually be quite risky on your knees. Low cadence work is good, but don't go below 60rpm, and increase your intensity as well.

    • @bryantsui6387
      @bryantsui6387 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Nijerk13 dont do that, like GCN reply it is bad for your knees.
      I was on my cheap old second hand bike, riding up the hill with a not proper gear set up, riding under 30 RPM and I push myself up the top of ditchling beacon, after that my knee is totally damaged. Now although i do proper training with bike set up now, I still feel the pain on my knees sometimes and that was like 3 years ago.
      So dont do it man,

    • @RealStephens
      @RealStephens 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      More a precautionary tale.. I've known many riders who have had serious knee injuries following this sort of training.. Bear in mind, this is a fun video.. I'm aware that strength/load training certainly has a place if done properly..

    • @benbraceletspurple9108
      @benbraceletspurple9108 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Less than 60 rpm is not good for knee health so I was told. Unless vary low intensity. Building leg muscles is for squats not cycling. Btw.
